Came in for a quick lunch. The oyako don was too salty but otherwise tasty. 3 stars. I sprang for the "real crab" california roll. The whole roll smelled of fish. Ugh. 1 star. Service was courteous and prompt. 2.5 stars overall.

I come here quite often for lunch and it's very decent quality.   Its freshness and price are the reason for the 4 stars.

I came here for dinner with my girlfriend and was overwhelmed at the selection of sushi rolls they had.  They also had a decent selection of Japanese beer, as well as sake and plum wine.  We started off with edamame, and ordered the Philly roll, Spicy Crunchy Scallop roll, Las Vegas roll, and Bahamas (or was it Bermuda?) roll.  We also received complimentary soup and salad with our order.  All of the rolls were pretty good -- I had no complaints whatsoever.  The fish seemed fresh and the rolls were flavorful.  Our server was also attentive throughout the night.
After 4 rolls, edamame, ginger ale, and a Asahi -- our bill totaled out to be $44!  That's a steal.  I will definitely check this place out again and try their other rolls!

We've eaten here a handful of times, and each time the sushi has been great! Prices and portions are reasonable. Service is decent. It's a great place for a quick, casual dinner.

I probably gone to this place for maybe 8 yrs now. I knew alot of the workers from the 1st manager, and the food was pretty alright above average. I used to come on a monthly.  After a few years they sold it to someone else and it just hit rock bottom they were stingy and raise the price on alot of dishes for a small amount so after some time i come back once in awhile like every 6 months just to check if it gotten better. Now they have new management. They adjust the prices to normal or alittle less from the original price and theyre not stingy with their food. The food is prepared more than how it was served before, fresh, thick and well prepared. The service was always wonderful here, new workers but they were always top on their service. They prepare the dishes more prettier and fancy and very tasteful. Its one of the sushi place I recommend in the area. I don't believe they have many baked sushi maybe a few. OH! umm if you order sushi i think either 10-13$ its free soup and salad.. they are always delicious and good! They also have wifi here I seen it on the wall last time i went. =) If you come sunday and monday all day its happy hour sushi/sashimi and i think anyday before 230pm if happy hour sushi, except for holidays of course!

Not bad for a Springfield Mall area.
Fresh fish, very reasonable prices (lunch sushi A or happy hour especially) and friendly chefs.
Last time I visited, it was during the earthquake. Talk about authentic Japanese experience :)
The waitresses tend to forget your miso or other small stuff sometimes, but food is always good. And you get a piece of refreshing fruit for dessert (melon, orange, strawberry...). Yum!

Most underrated sushi place in Northern VA, amazing quality, prices are excellent, the "happy hour" specials span the entire week at various times. Very friendly staff, fast service.

By far, they have the best Spicy Crunchy Scallops! They only get 4 stars from me because they raised the prices there after new management and they took away military discounts... smh

Most Japanese restaurants are a bit quirky, and Osaka is no exception to the this rule.

The booth seats were a little worn (sagging in the middle), but the small restaurant was half-full with various groups: couples, families with small children, and a large late-20's group- possibly military and was not too loud. Our Korean waitress was very nice.

The menu was a bit overwhelming, with a huge list of rolls, though many with avocado (yuck!). We ordered some plain rolls, such as the spicy tuna, a dinner special and a dinner bento box. (Can you tell we were hungry?) I enjoyed the vegetable and shrimp tempuras. Both were cooked perfectly, though the dipping sauce was a bit bland. I was not impressed with the gyoza- it was very blah. The chicken teriyaki was ok. My boyfriend's nigri sushi fell apart and the fish didn't seem super fresh.

The miso soup and salad with ginger dressing were average, but the rest of the food came without too much waiting so we were happy.

Osaka was awesome. I was a definite fan of the miso soup. I had a headache when I got here, unfortunately, but with friendly service, some ibuprofen, and some delicious, light food, I was fine within an hour.

As I'm not a fan of sushi, I had the chicken terayaki. I enjoyed the sauce--it's on the sweeter side. The decor here is pleasant, there's ample parking, and the tables aren't smushed together like they are in some sushi restaurants.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover a solid sushi place within walking distance of my apartment. I've only ordered take-out, but the hostesses are very pleasant and accommodating, providing me with complimentary tea while I wait for my order.

Notable is the extensive special rolls menu (although this made it difficult to order!). I've had a good tempura rainbow roll, a slightly underwhelming crunch roll, and a surprisingly spicy spicy tuna roll. All were large, fresh and the fillings were clearly made in-house.

Osaka is definitely going to become a regular spot for me.

The times they are a changin. My wife used to be dead set against eating sushi made by non Japanese. Now it's "oh, Korean people make good sushi." Not sure what that says about the state of our world, but it's food for thought. With that in mind, we stopped in at Osaka for dinner on a Saturday night. We were greeted and seated immediately. The restaurant could use some sprucing up, like so many these days, but with the economy as is, I won't quibble over cracked upholstery.

This place is a hidden gem across from the Springfield Mall. The food is fresh and excellent and the service is friendly. My daughter had her requisite plate of Yakisoba, and we added half a dozen rolls of sushi, a seaweed salad, and some plum wine. Miso soup and salad are provided as starters.

I work very near to Osaka (the restaurant, not the city-I wish) and I'll definitely be back. There were signs for some kind of $1 sushi special during the week. I'll have to give it a try.

The total was $50 plus tip. Support your local restaurants!

OUTSTANDING SERVICE!! As soon as you walk in, everyone greets you. Fast seating, attentive staff and the salad and soup arrives only seconds after ordering!

I ordered several pieces of sushi, to include scallops, smoked salmon, chu toro (mid grade), eel ,mackerel and a spicy salmon roll. All of the above... Super Delish! My favorite was the Hotategi...scallop nigiri sushi. Sweet and succulent and tender.

Their Sunday, Monday, Tuesday Happy Hour is fabulous! Come hungry...leave happy (and with money to spare)!

    *This is the correct address*
Yesterday was one of those day.  I was in Springfield running errands and was not in a good mood.  So I went with one of my favorite comfort foods...sushi!

I stopped Osaka, located on Loisdale near the Springfield Mall.  I walked in and all was quiet, I decided to sit at the bar.  The chefs were behind it making sushi fast and with precision.

I grabbed the sushi menu to order, I noticed that their specialty rolls were not on there but that the prices were low for nigiri and the standard rolls, that is because it was their happy hour menu.  Happy hour during lunch! I am so there!  So I ordered my nigiri and one roll.

Wow! the sushi was great! The textured with perfect, the rice cooked perfectly.  I loved!  And their spicy scallop, right amount of spice, right amount of scallop yum!  I gorged myself into bliss, MMMM! Sushi!

Osaka is a good place, it is out of the way.  If you don't work in the area you can easily miss the place.  It is a hidden gem in Springfield, Virginia.  But then again all the best sushi places are like that.  If you sit in the main dining room, you will get their full sushi menu.  But in all honesty, I prefer their bar menu.  Osaka, good sushi, okay service, great for a quick lunch or if you are like me, need a little pick me up.  Oh and one thing, wish they had uni.

My husband and I had a standing Friday sushi date at Osaka for about 2 years.  We loved this restaurant and became friendly with the owner.  We missed a few fridays in a row, and when we went back, it was suddenly under new management.  All of the old staff was gone, the new staff was subpar, the food had changed for the worse, and the prices had increased.  We were devastated!

As a sushi lover, I DO NOT recommend this restaurant!!!

However!  We recently discovered that the old management has opened up a new Osaka in Annandale.  Most of the old staff is there, the menu is exactly the same as the one we loved, and the prices are the same as well.  We were SO VERY happy to find our old restaurant just in a new place, and have resumed our Friday sushi dates.

If you want good sushi, drive a little bit further and go to the NEW Osaka in Annandale!  You will not regret it!

I come to this place only because its really close to home and cheap.

I come during their Happy Hour special.  Rolls are a bit smaller than normal but it gets the job done.

New management... eh I don't know..  i usually don't get charged for the spicy sauce or spicy mayo.  They charged either $0.50 or $1.00 I can't recall.  I also think I can taste the difference.

I will still come here during HH and because it's located nearby.

I went to Osaka for the sushi happy hour lunch specials. My friend and I tried the spicy tuna roll, salmon roll, California roll A and the avocado roll. I also ordered smoked sake nagiri. I'd have to say my favorite was the smoked salmon nagiri. Yum. It was a big, thick piece of salmon and had a really nice smoked flavor. Also, I'm not usually big on California rolls but this one was really nice and fresh. The spicy tuna was OK ... not really the spicy flavor that usually accompanies that kind of roll. It was spicy - but also kind of vinegar-y. Not bad, just not my favorite. The miso soup that came with our order (because we ordered $10 worth of sushi) was really yummy. Just what you want when coming in from the cold.

I wanted to mention that the happy hour prices start at $1 and go to $4.50, I think. It depends on what you order. It's still an amazing deal for sushi, though. Also, someone else mentioned a minimum order - that's only for takeout ($10).

    I'd definitely go back.

With the new management they want to charge you for everything. Spicy sauce will run you 1 dollar each and spicy mayo will run you another $0.50, its not much but bad business in my opinion.

Osaka is under new management, and unfortunately I can taste the difference. I've been going there for awhile now, to the point where it was almost twice a week. The previous staff knew me, and knew my order. I've gone a handful of times since new management. The prices are still great, and the menu is still extensive, and it's still one of the better ones in this area. However. It just doesn't taste the same. You are safe going with the nigri sushi, the salmon is always fresh. But as for the rolls like, shrimp tempura and spicy crunchy roll, its not all there anymore. The sushi rice is too wet, and the rice for the lunchboxes are too dry. I definitely don't want sushi as much as I used to. Hopefully they will get better with time. Other than that it's still the same great atmosphere.

Considering where Osaka is located, it's pretty decent to good sushi.  The ladies here are welcoming and very nice.  Your food comes out fast and is relatively fresh.  I would just stick to sushi here though, I have tried other items off their menu and it was not that great.

They have a sushi happy hour during lunch time and lasts all day long on Sunday and Monday.  Nothing fancy, just your basic rolls..makes a cheap lunch which is always good.

FYI- Osaka is closed mid afternoon after lunch 2-5(?) and reopens for dinner.

I am still a big fan of Osaka Restaurant-- I want to keep it alive so I am Yelping more about it to all you out there in the Yelp Community.   As I was walking into the restaurant, I noticed that there is a big banner that says "Under New Management."  The atmosphere continues to be homey and friendly; very unpretentious and unobtrusive. It is so anti-flashy; just down-to-earth good sushi! There were three servers on the floor who were taking turns in making sure that the customers are well taken care of.  This is the first time I've ordered straight from the ala carte menu -- and who knew, it's actually more practical ordering ala carte.

The restaurant also offers happy hour prices on sushi ($1.00 to $1.50 per order) from 11:30-2PM; and all day Sunday and Monday. What a treat! Try it!

I was starving and this place is right down the street. We walk in, they hand us drinks, soup and salad immediately. Wow. Quick service, oh but this doesn't last.
I order the negimaki (thin slice of beef wrapped around scallion) and my friend got yaki soba. The negimaki came out on one of those sizzling plates, which really didn't add anything to the dish. It had a lot of veggies (carrot, onion, broccoli) which was nice, but the meat just didn't taste too good. Kinda overcooked.
This place is pretty pricey. Sorry to say it, but a lot of the dishes do seem kind of instant or pre-made, so it seems too high for what you get.
The atmosphere is dated, but cute and the waitstaff is hit or miss.

I've had nothing but great experiences at this place.  The first time we went I ordered a $7.99 lunch box special that was really a great value, but it came with a california roll (amongst so many other things) and I don't like the flavor of seaweed (nori) .  I mentioned it to my friends sitting next to me at the sushi bar, the chef must have overheard.  A minute later the chef handed me a california roll with no seaweed (That was amazing experience #1).  The second time we went, I got the lunch box special again, but this time with no seaweed of course.  When we were finished, the chef handed us each an emptied half orange peel (think: bowl made of half of an orange) filled with chunks of the orange and a toothpick to eat them with(Amazing experience #2).  Note:  I' ve added a picture of this orange treat to the photos section.  It was such a nice gesture, we will definitely continue to return to this place.  Restaurants like this, that really understand what customer service is, a becoming more difficult to find everyday.  Their prices are also great, during lunch they have a sushi roll happy hour, but I will continue to get the lunch box special for only $7.99.

If you're looking for a great dining experience from a staff that is really willing to strive to make you happy, check out Osaka.

    Nobody Likes Being Poisoned

Why do we, the prototypical American diners, keep eating bad food at restaurants?  One reason is our "there are hungry children in China" upbringing.  We stubbornly refuse to walk away from any meal because we demand good value for our hard-earned money.  The food can be bland, mushy, and overcooked but we might as well eat it since we're paying.  Another reason is that we're too polite to make a fuss.  We don't like confrontations or short-changing the waitress.  It's easier to avoid these guilty feelings by flashing an uneasy smile, going home, and writing a review.  But the main reason is that we simply don't know any better ... until it's too late.  It's all too easy to dismiss warning signs like slight discoloration and mildly putrid odors.  We give restaurants the benefit of the doubt because we blindly trust that they adhere to standard hygienic practices.  Let me assure you that common courtesy is not worth the risk of food poisoning.

We immediately recognized that Osaka would be another ordinary Japanese restaurant - boring menu selections (typical bento boxes, noodles, and sushi bar) and outrageous prices (mediocre food at premium prices).  The miso soup and ginger dressing were unmistakably ready-made, "just add water" products.  It tasted identical to every soup and salad dressing found at other banal Japanese restaurants and supermarket aisles.  I wish there was a compliment to offer Osaka but homely décor and well-arranged plates are never an excuse for spoiled food.

At first, we suspected raw fish.  A cursory inspection revealed no outright sanitation violations, unhygienic practices, or malfunctioning equipment; but the disproportional inventory (quantity of pre-cut fish compared to number of patrons) was highly suspicious.  We ate at the beginning of dinner service so all of these fish must have been cut earlier Sunday, or Saturday, or ... wait, just how old are these fish?  Overall, the sashimi was of poor quality in all respects.  It's size was thin (1/4" inch thick at most).  Its taste was nearly bland if not for the strong "fishy" aftertaste.  Its texture was flimsy, chewy, and border-line rubbery.  The color was paler than comparable sashimi cuts elsewhere (probably due to the sheer translucent cuts).  Nevertheless, I doubt that the sushi bar was the primary culprit because several people ordered sushi yesterday and no one else was keeling over.

Next, we suspected the shrimp and scallop teriyaki.  The scallops had a nicely seared exterior with a sweet and buttery interior, much like raw Japanese scallops.  After happily finishing my first scallop, I suddenly realized that I was eating uncooked teriyaki, not sashimi.  A cooked scallop isn't soft and buttery; it's tender and slightly firmer.  Raw seafood, under proper conditions like a compulsively-sanitized sushi bar, is perfectly safe.  Kitchens, however, don't necessarily adhere to the same sanitary rigor that sushi bars demand.  It's disconcerting to remember that pathogenic bacteria fornicate wildly in undercooked scallops.  Nevertheless, undercooked does not necessarily mean spoiled food.

Ultimately, we concluded that the likely culprit was the gyoza dumplings.  Hidden behind the crispy, brown skin was a sewage of foul pungent odors and soured meat.  It was after tasting the gyoza that we began feeling nauseous and dizzy.  Cindy Y. threw up twice yesterday night (once at the restaurant and later at home).  It would be wise to know that "pathogenic microorganisms are capable of reaching infectious concentrations prior to sensory spoilage and prior to potential toxin production by C. botulinum."[1]  So if you sense or smell flavors that are sour, chlorine-like or buttermilk-like, then there's a strong likelihood that it's already spoiled.  I suspect that the gyozas, which were likely the pre-made frozen variety, was improperly stored after being thawed too many times.

The morale of our story is that you should never be shy about sending back poorly prepared food.  We were fortunate to have eaten a meager portion of contaminated food.  Knowing first hand what food borne illness might be like, we advise you that common courtesy is simply not worth the risk of food poisoning.

My recommendation: Order a single serving of a sashimi before anything else, preferably something other than the popular tuna or salmon.  Less popular fishes serve as a good barometer for restaurant's turnover rate and food handling practices.  If the fish is of poor quality, what else is the kitchen hiding?  At least you can see the fish at the sushi bar.  Politely pay the bill in cash and walk away.  [Original Visit: Feb. 22, 2009]

Sushi here is fabulous. Service is wonderful. Very nice atmosphere for a causal meal with friends.

I love the "dollar" sushi lunch "happy hour" deal Tues - Saturdays. There is a minimum order - and not everything is included - but there is still a wide variety of nirigi and maki to choose from. Or you can branch out and just order from the regular menu - prices are still very reasonable.

Recently I had ama ebi (sweet shrimp; very very good young shrimp - not the larger ones that can have a slightly different flavor), Shiro Maguro (albacore/white tuna), maguro (tuna), sake (salmon), and the Japanese lasagna roll (think california roll with special sauce put under the broiler then topped with flying fish row - cali rolls are not something i usually get but this is yummy). All very fresh and very tasty. I love the miso and salad that come with the meals too.

Surprisingly this is not a well-known sushi joint. I've been coming back to this place for several years now and have always been impressed with the service and the tasty sushi.

My family and I usually go during happy hours when the niguri is $1 each and is still served with miso soup and salad with ginger dressing.

The waitresses are always friendly and the sushi chefs are very welcoming when you walk in. I haven't been back in a while because of the distance, but I would definitely like to go back again during happy hour.

It was all perfectly cut. Have gone back twice and been equally impressed. So if you're looking for a decent local sushi place - give it a try!

I've also been dining at Osaka since childhood! Osaka is largely ignored, which is evidence by the only 2 reviews, but they are great service professionals and their food is consistently wonderful.  I experienced my first box lunch special here and I believe it was $6.95 for chicken teriayki, gyoza, rice, shrimp and vegetable tempura, and their starter salad with a killer peanut sauce, and miso soup.  I wasn't into sushi until much much later so unfortunately I can't relay that experience.  They also have two group steakhouse tables (the watch them cook and throw knives thing) which is housed in a special area of what is a tiny restaurant.

It's rarely full which is a shame, but clearly they do enough business to be open for about 15 years.  You should DEFINITELY patronize this restaurant, you will not be disappointed.

I've been going to this place ever since I was a kid, and for good reason. The food is fantastic. The trick is to come during their "Happy Hour", during which the price of sushi is discounted, and the generous lunch box special is available. Teriyaki, tempura, dumplings, a california roll, soup and salad all for $8. The staff is fairly attentive, and the manager can always be found there to greet you.
