I never wanted to enter this place. Â To betray Morse Gyros would be treason, punishable by death. Â But then, I had this long day, and I hadn't eaten, and it was right there, and so I went in. Â I still feel a little bit guilty, but we're working through it. Â Damn catholic upbringing
It was much nicer inside than I thought it would be. Â I could study here, if there weren't a gaggle of Loyola kids being entirely too chipper and bubbly. Â The guys behind the counter were quite attractive and quite friendly. Â I think I will go back and I will throw all of my feminine wiles at them, so as to acquire some free gyros. Â
Anyways, the chicken gyro salad was really surprising. Â Now, I'm only comparing it to Morse Gyro, because let's be honest. No one comes to Rogers Park unless they have to, and if you are here, these are your two realistic choices. Â
Morse gyro has better bread, but the vegetables here were much higher quality (romaine, not iceberg etc) and the chicken gyro was MUCH less fat laden and heavy here, but it was cut quite thick, while my friend at Morse Gyro cuts it like tissue paper. Â The fries were comparably bitchin.
I am quite sympathetic to such a place, which seems to be an independent place with real heart. Â I really think they really want to serve you a good meal. Â That goes a long way.
The kofta looked totally bitchin. Â The gyro quesadilla? Â Only higher substances could yield such a craving. Â Morse Gyro will still have my loyalty, but this place is definitely worth it once in a while. Â Just stick to the middle eastern fare. or the waitstaff. zing.
This place is bad. It was the only option open today so my friend and I stopped in because Chipotle was closed.
My friend got a hamburger and chili cheese fries and she barely ate any of it. She felt very, very sick afterwards. I had a BBQ beef sandwich and mozarella sticks. My BBQ beef was just beef with BBQ poured (more like drenched, the bread got soggy) on top at the last second, not what I expected from the sandwich. My mozarella sticks took the cake though, they were just shells of fried bread with no cheese inside. Seriously! They cost $4.99 and I got no mozarella cheese inside them.
The workers were really nice, but the food was really bad. Maybe I should try some of their Middle Eastern and Greek food, but based on some of the reviews I'm not sure I want to (though their tabouli looked amazing from what I saw after I placed my order). I don't plan on coming back.
"Meh. I've experienced better." Â Yes, that sums it up nicely.
The people seem nice. Â Otherwise...unless you are a drunken Loyola student living nearby, or were born without taste buds, there is no reason to give them any business.
I once had a pretty good chicken cheesesteak sandwich here. Â The hummus is BAD. Â The fries and onion rings are decent. Â The falafel is a joke--rubbery, spongy, lukewarm, and nearly flavorless anyway. Â Blech. Â
Oh, and they play godawful "lite" top-40 radio in here. Â I saw a little girl who seemed to be the daughter of one of the employees (proprietors?) sitting at a table while her mother finished her shift. Â She was singing quietly to herself along with the radio. Â At least four songs in a row! Â She must spend a lot of hours after school sitting there being brainwashed into thinking that this is all that American music has to offer. Â It should be a crime to expose that stuff to a minor. Â It's worse than drugs, poor kid.
I'm surprised people rate this place so highly. I was excited when this became "Pita Grill." I figured it would be a good Gyros stop. But it's not; it's frozen Gyros strips, the white sauce is not right, and the pita is dry and awful. We have been here a few times, a couple months between each time, hoping it gets better, and it never does.
Better places to go include Morse Gyros (which is a dive, but the food is yummy) and Grill Inn (which is newer, cleaner, and nicer than this place, and the food is much, much better).
I'll be honest...when this place was Northcoast Dogs and SoupR Bowl (or something like that) you couldn't have paid me to walk in there. Â "Ew" and "disgusting" were the only words that ever came to mind. Â Seems that all it takes with me is a fancy new awning-slash-sign and some redecorating and I'm good.
Was there for the first time today and I'll definitely go back. Â I had a BLT that was delicious...but then, everything's better with bacon so it's not hard to stay away from "wrong" with that sandwich. Â My friends had the special of the day which was hummus and falafel...actually, I ended up wishing I had that. Â The portion was huge and the said it was good. Well...that's my mistake for the day.
I say 4 stars because of:
1) The PRICES--very low and for the amount of food you get totally worth it in my book.
2) The convenience. Â I can envision stopping in here at least once a week to do takeout.
3) The interior. Â Not disgusting. Â Which, when considering this particular location, gets a star. Â It's not great either though...we walked in and there were empty cups and plates on tables--however, I put 70% of that blame on lazy SOB's who think it's the world's job to clean up after them. Â Get it together people.
4) The variety. Â Huge menu of all good things. Â I am a student and this is the type of food I want...sometimes.
It's not a 5-star place. Â Actually, I don't even know if it's a 4-star place. Â But I like it, so the extra star stays. Â And the fact that it doesn't evoke the same reaction that the prior place did makes me feel perfectly okay keeping that extra star.
This used to be a Gold Coast Dogs and they've kept a lot of the same menu and quality. Â If you're in the Loyola area and don't mind chewy hamburgers and soggy fries, then it's a convenient and inexpensive choice. Also not recommended are the beef kebabs made from the lowest quality meat you can purchase - I've never had a restaurant serve a worse ratio of meat to gristle.
Review Source:5 stars for a new (and clean!) local eatery. Â I was excited to try this place last night - it's only been around for a few weeks (at least I didn't notice it until recently, but I'm kind of slow) and I've been wanting to give it a try. Â I was excited to walk in and see that it was very clean, simple and casual.
This place reminds me of Big Buns and Pita a few blocks west, but it's a bit nicer on the inside.
Overall I was very pleased with the selection (everything from gyros and falafel to chicken fingers and burgers) and was super excited for the non-traditional chicken (rather than lamb) gyros (I'm easy to please). Â They have the lamb kind too, don't fret. Â My food was good and for $6.95 I got a fairly large gyro, small salad, fries and a drink. Â Lovin' the combo goodness.
This is definitely worth a stop in for a casual meal. Â I'm hoping that P&G Pita and Grill does well, but it's not that big, so I don't look forward to the lines when people realize it exists. Â
Huge bonus for you Loyola kids in the area who like free Wi-Fi access. Â Yep, the pita place has free Wi-Fi and a big pleather couch and chair for you to relax in. Â See what I mean? Good stuff.
