Havnt been to The Peanut in a long time because of my work, decided to bring an out of town friend in to the downtown location this afternoon for wings. Â Unfortunately they dropped the ball on everything possible. Â The bartender was still drunk from last night, couldnt remember anything we asked him. Â The wings took so long to come out I wasnt even hungry anymore. Â Which was a good thing because they had sat too long and were dry as a bone. Â I really hope this was a one time deal, guys, I would hate to have to write off an old KC tradition.
Review Source:Quality for a dive(ish) bar. Â Didn't try the food but strong beer selection with 3 New Belgium options. Â Friendly bartender and locals. Â Many TVs but no high-def for MNF. Â The wings looked and smelled amazing (too bad the vegan can't partake, can I use the sauce on some tofu???) Â Will for sure go back for happy hour or a beer on the walk home.
Review Source:The wings at the Peanut are by far the best in Kansas City. Â If you want cheap beer and amazing wings then head to the Peanut. Â If you are looking for an attentive wait staff and high class surroundings then go elsewhere. Â
It would be nice if there were more/better quality televisions to watch games on.
At first glance this place doesn't look like a place where you would want to test out the five second rule, but thankfully its looks are deceiving.
And they have wings. Good wings. In fact their wings are probably my favorite in town. And not just small wings, but the whole gosh darn wing that was probably ripped right off of the chicken. Â Then they smother it in buffalo sauce and give you a huge cup of bleu cheese as a dipping sauce.
I will admit, the only items I've had at The Peanut are their wings and a Boulevard Wheat or two. Â If you're looking for a thorough review of their menu I'm the wrong guy, but if you want what I consider the best wings in Kansas City, this is the place to be.
Best wings and BLTs doesn't even begin to cover it!
I have only been here once, but I can't imagine a bad experience no matter what food mood I'm in. I had the BLT and it was...exquisite. I know that's a fanny word for a simply sandwich, but they put more on their BLT than those three letters. There's is more like a BLTMOC (mayo, onion and cheese). It's what everyone should do to their BLT...seriously.
My friend had the chicken wings. I was blown away when I saw them. Normally when you go to a restaurant and you order the chicken wings, you're given a part of a chicken wing. You get the little drum part or the little arm part. Not true and the Peanut. Here, you get the WHOLE wing. You get the drum, the arm AND the tips (fingers, if you will). I suppose you could look at the one sauce option as a downside, but before BWW, there was never anything but, so just go there knowing that the only sauce option should be called "awesome sauce".
I also need to mention the chips and salsa. There was something unique about both and I can't put my finger on it, but they were delicious as well.
Before I conclude this little rave here, I want to point out that this truly is a place you can go for any food mood. They have the wings, the sandwiches and the sides, but they also have incredible salad and burger options along with a long list of other menu items to choose from. You won't be disappointed.
I've been here a number of times. Unless my coworkers drag me for drinks, this is the last time. The service is horrid (they rarely come to your table, even if it's large) and you often have to run up to the bar for anything at all. The food is gross whether it comes to the tacos, burgers, chicken wings, etc. I can't recommend this place to anyone :( I've given it so many tries!
Review Source:I was in from out of town and came through this place on a Sunday night. I wasn't expecting much, but was blindsided by the lack of a special and the $3.75 draft beers. Even some wings were over $9. I didn't stay long.
At these prices, this isn't a dive bar - just an overpriced bar with shitty decor. At least the bartender was courteous.
There's nothing special about this place. I'd avoid it.
I suspect The Peanut is the kind of bar that when you visit enough, the bartenders and servers get to know you really well. As long as you're a fair tipper and not a jerk to be around, you probably get an extra handful of fries and probably a buy back here and there. It's the kind of place where people know your name. It's this kind of place for someone. Not me though.
I was the dude that came in with a table full of friends before the Radiohead concert when the staff thought they were going to have a slow Sunday - maybe that's not the case but that's how I felt.
There were several empty glasses and a number of people had to go to the bar for a drink. To add insult to injury, two of us had to go to the bar to settle up AND the server didn't add someone's beer to their tab before they left so as the last guy to tab out, I was left holding the bill. Credit there has to be split between the server and my jackass friend who either lost track of what they drank, thought he was getting a deal or was hoping to settle up before someone figured it out. I'm not sure but given the over all experience, it was a bit of salt in the wound to pay the extra 4.95.
So, unless you're one of the people who gets their name shouted when you walk in the door, or plan to go there enough to get there someday, you may want to keep your expectations in check.
I love cool dive bars and this place on 9th street falls right into that. A place to belly up and bullshit with the everyone while knockin back a cold one. Now for the main event, their wings. These wings are almost sexual to me. I lust for these things, the sauce is so peppery and addictive. Add the blue cheese sauce and it's like an orgy. I ordered them for pickup for my Super Bowl party and gladly agreed to the hour wait since they were swamped with orders. Heard they have a mean Rueben too, but I can never NOT order the wings in order to try it!!
Review Source:Here's a fun fact.... when I used to describe my perfect day, it was a bucket of extra spicy chicken wings, a few bottles of a my favorite bourbon du jour, and ten beautiful women, all slathered in blue cheese.
Sounds pretty obnoxious, yes?
That's OK by me. Â
Why would I go to this dive bar? Â The wings. Â They are fantastic. Â Plump, crispy, and tasty! Â We used to go and watch the KU games here all the time and while that is a possibility, just remember this is a dive bar, so big screen high def TVs weren't really their thing. Â The prices were reasonable, the staff was always friendly, and the wings were DELICIOUS. Â So good, that I might think about changing that imagery mentioned before.
Nah.
I would have to go to KC for that!
This is a great dive bar with above average service and tasty food.
I have been to this location a couple of times and haven't been disappointed. Â The food, like the Main Street location, is above exceptional bar food. Â I have to admit the cheese fries are exactly what I need to either keep me going on my night o'bars or help center me from an evening of o'bars.
Regardless, this is one of the bars in the downtown area which doesn't leave me disappointed with the prices, service or food.
Unbeatable BLT (probably the best I've ever had), delicious MAMMOTH chicken wings (crunchy-chewy skin covered in a tangy sauce...but seriously, how big are these chickens? They should be called "churkey wings" because they are huge) and awesome chili cheese fries. This is *total* guy food, but I love it once in a while. P.S. Don't even try to retain any dignity when your hands and face are covered in wing sauce. P.P.S. Does this place have a defibrillator around?
Review Source:Don't pass up the Peanut! Best BLT....anywhere. Get the triple! It is worth the experience. It is one of the best hole in the wall dives you can find. Don't expect chairs to match. The tables will wobble and the tv's are old. But does that matter when the food is good, the prices are right and the service is good? Nope!
Review Source:Its only 1 block from me so its a great place within walking distance and another good alternative to the Quaff for me once in a while. Â They have some great Wings! Â The other food that I have tried there has been decent to good at best. Â The one drawback I would saw is its kind of dark and update your televisions. Â This is the only sports bar I have been into in several years that still has an old style big screen tv and 7-8 tube tv's.
Review Source:Wearing white? Â Maybe not the place for you. Â You can drink reasonably, but keep the order simple, beer, or booze.
The Peanut(s) are joints, which in this case a joint means an oversized dive and these joints serve food. Â It's not the food your cardiologist wants to hear that you're eating, but he/she would slip into this place from time to time as well, if they only knew.
There is a bunch of stuff on the menu, but I haven't looked at it in years. Â There are three things on the menu that I know, love and occasionally am struck with "I've got to have a Peanut _________, NOW!"
First and foremost, the BLT, single, hold the pepper and light on the mayo.  It's not a life changer, but it is the category killer of BLT's.  Simple and consistantly great, with a few chips on the side.  My  high metabo friends go for the cheese fries as their preferred pairing.
I order these far less often, but the buffalo chicken wings have a serious following and you see people consuming them with the same religious aura that is exhibited over Arthur Bryants beef and fries . Â Just looking at the menu listing for either a dozen, or a half, they at first seem expensive, but you have to realize that these wings would be big for a large turkey. Â Hot, medium spiced, cooked to order. Â Plan a twenty to forty minute wait after ordering, depending on how many other folks are jonesing for them ahead of you, and usually there are several. Â The odor of wings puts a distinctive and consistant bite in the air of the place.
Last, and maybe the least known, is the Sunday Brunch. Â I think they serve mexican scrambled eggs and french toast, Â but I know they serve eggs benedict and it is among the best. Melinda's hollandaise is decadent. Â I usually request a half order backed up by a bit of the dogs hair. Â Note: The brunch is only from 11 to 1pm and they often run out of Hollandaise. Â Hate to have to plan ahead on a Sunday morning, but when the taste buds are tap dancing..................
This is a great place that is within walking distance from work for me. Â I came here with a few co-workers and it was nice. Â My biggest piece of advice is to make sure you come early, like between 11:30-12, or you will not have a place to sit. Â It's packed by 12:10 and then the food takes forever because they get all backed up.
I think they have the best BLT ever. Â It's magnificent. Â It will put you in one of those after lunch comas though, so beware. Â They also have decent pitcher specials during the lunch hour, but none for me or I'd be passed out in the bathroom by 1:30.
The service is quick but not friendly. Â I didn't really mind though I just wanted my food!
Went to this place for lunch and it's a neat place. Little hole in the wall but it does have its flaws. We sat at the bar and my buddy kept telling me about the chicken wings, so I gave it a try. Wings are alright but the blue cheese dip is pretty good, a bit garlic-y . I gave it 3 stars because The beer I got was very warm and it was from the tap. Overall its a ok place.
Review Source:I used to live less than a block from here, so I strolled in all the time for Royals games or to meet up with folks, and I've gotta echo the general consensus on this one. Great wings, excellent BLT (warning: don't get the double!), slightly weird chili that, for whatever reason, works for me on their fries and doesn't on their hot dog. Mediocre draught beer selection with a few decent handles. Service can range from awesome and attentive to apathetic depending on who is working, who failed to show up for their shift, and how busy they've been.
The Peanut is nothing more or less than your classic downtown neighborhood dive bar. If you're in the neighborhood and want some pretty damn good wings and a cold beer, it's hard to go wrong.
If you like tacos that have a mildly spicy and absolutely unique ( in a good way! ) Â flavor, try this Peanut for Lunch.
The service can be slow at times, but lately they've been getting better. Â Decor isn't exactly kid-friendly, but then again -- it's a BAR. Â They have a couple of TVs scattered around, usually tuned to several different channels.
PROTIP: Try a Coke with Grenadine to go with your tacos - it's good. :-)
If I had a choice of going here or watching a small turtle hump a pair of Crocs, I would obviously choose the later. But this is still a destination point any time I come back South of the river via the Broadway Bridge.
There is a middle aged woman who works behind the bar here who is perpetually overwhelmed by even the smallest of crowds. I can't hate on her though, one time when I went in here with a buddy who asked for some celery and carrots to go with our wings, she literally laughed at him and said she wasn't even sure what celery and carrots were. I think she was after my heart that afternoon. She even on one occasion threatened to deny me beer because A) she didn't recognize me and B) she didn't believe my driver's license was real. Incidentally, it was because of her that I grew out my Doc Hollywood mustache for the sole purpose of getting my new license picture. Shortly after getting my new license, I shaved that gross sucker off. I was really hoping for an argument the next time I went in here, but it didn't happen. I was greeted with genuine enthusiasm, and served adult beverages on a timely basis.
I only order the wings here. I order six to stay, and a dozen to go. Both with extra Blue Cheese. Other reviews talk about how these are not the best wings in town, but they fail to mention where the best wings in town may be found. These were the first buffalo wings I ate after a four year hiatus from meat, and they will always be my standard. That doesn't mean they're the best. Bud is my standard for beer, Gates is my standard for BBQ, and the Peanut is my standard for wings. These are simply benchmarks by which everything else is measured, but benchmarks for a reason; they are always solid options.
I don't really think it's the wing sauce, or the gargantuan size of the wings here that make them so special. Personally, I think it's the Blue Cheese dressing they make in-house. That stuff is without question the kind of shit that has me at "Hello". My wife can attest to the gastrointestinal effect that the combination of these wings and the dressing that accompanies them has on me, and subsequently her, but I don't care, her suffering is worth it when it comes to these puppies. If you find yourself downtown with twenty minutes or so to spare, this is a great place to stop, and pick up some truly great wings that anyone with taste buds will appreciate. They package their to go wings on a flimsy cardboard plate wrapped in a couple "Thank You" plastic sacks. I firmly oppose plastic bags being used in such a wasteful manner, but as soon as I re heat a couple wings, I forget my earthy enthusiasm and become completely immersed in the spicy goodness that is the Peanut wings. Be sure to order extra Blue Cheese dressing though.
Say what you will about the wings. Â Perhaps they are not the best in town, but no one can say they are not the biggest wings in town--at least not with a straight face. Â The BLT is the best I've ever eaten. Â Its a heart attack sangwich, no doubt--given those uber thick plentiful slabs of pork fat goodness they jam into every sandwich. Â
Ok place to drink, but it gets a little warm in the restaurant on hot, steamy KC summer evenings.
This is the best place in KC to get wings....they are amazing here. Â Huge and always tasty. Â The other rave at Peanut is the BLT...I'm not a BLT fan so won't comment there.
Other than the food, the bar is a standard dive bar. Â Even with it being a few blocks from my condo, I haven't stepped into Peanut more than 10 times....not that I dislike the place, it just doesn't do much for me unless I'm looking to get a wing fix.
I'm just going to write a quick one for The Peanut. Â Everything has been said already that needs to be said. Â It's a dive. Â It's a smoky bar. Â The BLT is the best in the universe.
Here's where I'll add... Â The other day I noticed that you can "add an egg" to your BLT. Â I tried it... Â LOVED IT!!! Â I know it sounds strange - but if you like eggs, you might want to give it a whirl! Â I think it adds a buck-fifty to the price. Â But oh sweet heavenly fried goodness!!!
there are now multiple "peanuts" in kansas city, but I always think of the one downtown as the original. Â BEST BLT in town, hands down. Â I've tried to make it at home, but to no avail. Â It's amazing, you don't realize how good a blt can be until you try it. Â The wings are huge. Â They use a regular size chicken wing, and it's the whole wing, not those frozen little drummies you get at other restaurants. Â My husband thinks they are a little too peppery but I love them. Â They make them on demand, so it's at least 20 minutes from the time you order them and sometimes longer if they are busy. Â Their upstairs has a private party room which it totally fun. Â The whole place looks like a dive but it a great place to hang out and all of them are full of great people.
