Everyone says the peanut carries the best wings in town. I've never been much of a wing man. It's not because I don't like them, it's just I've never really gotten into them. Sunday evening I had a weird craving for wings, and I decided I need to try the "best in town."
I ordered carry out, so I can't really say much about the establishment itself. Here's what I can say. The wings are not overhyped. They are very very good. I've not tried many wings, but these are hands down the best I've tried. I don't have much else to say. Go eat their wings and smile about it.
I'm a fan of the original Peanut on Main, and I tend to dislike anything in Johnson County, so the smart-ass in me wants to knock the place, but I just can't. Â They have a great beer selection, and the menu is absolutely top-notch. Â Of course, the BLT is the best BLT in Kansas City, definitely up to the standards of the other locations. Â And the wings - well, the wings are works of messy art, and, again, they are up to the standards of the other locations. Â
Today, I finally ventured past wings and BLTs, though it was hard to do. Â Why get something else when those are sooooo darned good that I dream about them? Â Because I didn't want to look like a barbarian in front of a business associate, and those two menu items make me lose my composure.
So, I tried the reuben. Â It was GREAT. Â Thick slices of tender corned beef, and enough cheese and sauerkraut to make it sing. Â The only criticism I could make is that the pumpernickel was not very well grilled - a light touch that barely crisped the outside of the bread. Â So close to 5 stars, but still great. Â And the fact that I had to roll down the menu to my third choice before I could find something to whine about is pretty impressive, I think.
The beer selection is good, too, though I didn't get to imbibe today. Â Good mix of craft and crap beer.
I love this place, the wings are literally life changing! The service is always top notch, and you can tell the general manager has a passion for the business and wants the customers to have a great time while there. The place is clean and well maintained, yet has the same great food as other peanut locations.
Also a great location for watching KSU games.
I always have a great experience here at The Peanut. The service is fantastic. The smaller food menu makes it easier to navigate. They have a great selection of beers and they're cheap in comparison. Plenty of TVs and seating. It has become a favorite game-watching location. I drive out of my way to come here.
Review Source:The reviews on here are way too low. The wings alone make this place worth a try. Also the BLT is very good as well. If you go here and order the brisket sandwich and then swear the place off, you're doing it wrong!
This was my favorite line from one of the previous reviews "Let's put it this way, her level of service exceeded what you usually get in the northern part of Overland Park." LOL. No idea what that even means. The service at Peanut is usually pretty hit or miss. Some of the servers are a little rude, but the guys working the bar are always really nice and helpful. I would say more good than bad here.
Now, back to the wings. I have been to Buffalo, NY. I have asked the fine people of Buffalo (where Buffalo wings were born) where I should get hot wings. I was told by many people to try Duff's. The Peanut is hands down better than Duff's. Also, anyone who eats wings knows you shouldn't go through "a pile of napkins." All you really need is one. This does mean you have to get creative in how you drink your beer, but it's not too tough. Trust me.
Speaking of beer, $6.50 pitchers of PBR is the every day special.
so my first vist to the peanut was quite wonderful. i met a few girl friends there for dinner and i showed up a little late. the waitress came to the table right away to get my drink order and then back just a few minutes later to get my food order. i ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with fries. i didnt have to wait long for my food to arrive, which was great because i was starving! I then realized that she had brought me a BLT instead. i stopped her and asked if she had given me someone elses food and thats when she realized she had gotten my order wrong. Well i LOVE bacon so i wasnt mad that she gave me a BLT and she was apologetic about her mistake. the BLT Â was perfect, lots of bacon. Then came time for the check to come, she had put the first 2 girls on the same check since they came together and when i asked her about getting my check she explained that they were no going to charge me because it was her fault i had gotten then wrong order. HOW NICE! i was so pleased i left her a nice fat tip and my business card. i love when people in the service industries know when to give a costumer a break even though i really didnt care that the mistake has been made. i did go there a second time and just had a salad with chicken...over seasoned chicken didnt complement the salad mixture..so i know next time to stick with anything with bacon. i will be back.
Review Source:We walked in, sat at a booth, and waited for about 15 minutes. Â No server came to our table. Â It seemed that the only service was at the bar. Â We left and went to Maloney's, where we were served immediately.
We might return, since the decor and menu at Peanut are better than at Maloney's. Â But something is very wrong with the table service at Peanut's booths.
I am surprised by the over all low reviews.... I mean, it's not any worse than any of the other 200 sports bars in the neighborhood, is it? I have strolled on in a few times, and never had an unpleasant experience, but was never blown away. Then again, I never expected to be blown away, it's just another wing and beer place.
Review Source:I guess the idea is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Â The Peanut didn't even bother to print up new menus - they just took old ones from their other 3 locations. Â Don't know if that means they are just lazy or don't care about this location. Â As it is, this is at least the 3rd concept to be in this space in the 4 years I have lived a stone's throw from Downtown OP. Â There's a bigger question here - why do restaurants and bars fail - especially in such a fantastic location?
No question the food is good - I had one of their BLTs and while I didn't have their wings on this occasion they are pretty great. Â The waitress even took the time to change the channel for me to the Barca game. Â Service and food was good. Â Just hard to get excited when I don't know if the place will be there in 6 months, you know?
Here's hoping.
Everything in here is nice and new. Â Well, new. Â The bar stools at the high top tables are anything but nice. Â Cheap is more like it. Â Tiny seat, very uncomfortable, Â and your foot slides off the footrail of the chair while you try to wriggle your way into comfort. Â Now I know how people with Restless Leg Syndrome feel.
The place was pretty busy when we walked in, but not off the chain. Â We sat down at a high top and waited quite a while before we were greeted. Â Once the server finally got to us, she was on point the rest of the visit for the most part. Â Let's put it this way, her level of service exceeded what you usually get in the northern part of Overland Park.
We got the cheese fries as an appetizer. Â The melted cheese strands on the top were deceiving. Â The bowl the fries came in had a puddle of hot Cheese Whiz on the bottom. Â Pretty much flavorless and made the fries soggy. Â Definitely something I would not reorder. Â Besides, who serves fries in a bowl? Â Next time put the Cheese Whiz on the side and give me my fries hot and crispy in a basket.
We backed it up with a dozen of the infamous Peanut wings.  I get it, they're big.  They are also a royal pain in the ass to eat, and horribly messy.  By serving the entire wing instead of the drums and flats separated, you are quoted a "minimum 20 minute cook time".  Too much work to eat, and you spend more time burning through a pile of napkins and wiping off your face than you do enjoying the wings.  Besides, who eats that extra little segment connected to the flat that holds a famine ration of chicken jerky at best?  Also, no choice of sauce for the wings.  They come one way.  What's with Kansas City and their  lackluster chicken wings?  If you want a reasonable choice of wing sauce in this town, your solution is Buffalo Wild Wings?  Corporate cookie cutter dog food.  A locals hangout like Peanut could really rock the house with some exceptional wing sauces.  Teriyaki, Honey Mustard, Hot/Garlic (with 3 or 4 levels of heat to choose from), Lemon Pepper, BBQ, etc.  Especially in a town that is world famous for BBQ...who'd think the chicken wing industry in KC would ignore using signature BBQ sauce on wings?  Am I being pretentious here?  Or am I captain of the obvious?  Maybe a little bit of both...but I suspect what I am saying is fairly accurate and holds some weight.
The server was on top of our sodas. Â That was the best part of the service. Â Our glasses never went dry. Â She was right on top of it. Â My only critique outside of the long greet time was the reaction I got when I asked her to box up my wings. Â First of all, it's a common courtesy in the restaurant business. Â It should be done without the guest having to ask. Â When I did ask, she seemed put off by it and annoyed. Â Our celery and ranch dressing did not make it in the to go box.
The bar was impressive looking. Â Metal speed pourers, the bottles were all flagged, a great draft beer selection, but no drink specials. Â In a tight economy, building a value for your customer base certainly gets attention, especially when you open a sports bar that has two other competing spots within a block. Â The Peanut has the potential to really put a hurting on Maloney's and The Other Place, but are going to be hard pressed to really lay down the law in downtown OP if their guests have to pay full price to help them take a fair market share running out of the gate.
Bottom line here. Â I could take it or leave it. Â It was nothing special. Â I will come back to sit at the bar and see if I am swayed any.
Had lunch today, first time at The Peanut. Â Service fine. Â Ordered the beef brisket sandwich, which apparently comes with cottage cheese or chips, but can substitute fries. Â Unfortunately, I didnt pay attention to the prices or to my bill closely as I was busy talking the whole time with my lunch companion. Â All I know is, my bill was $10 for a pretty average BBQ sandwich and nothing great fries, water to drink and $2 tip. Â $12 for nothing to write home about. Â Will be my last visit to The Peanut.
Review Source:They opened last Wed 3/14/12 and they are pretty set up. They have a few remodeling things they are still going to do like rip out the weird half moon seating in the middle of the bar where no one can see you.
The waitress was ok, took her a while to see us because we were sitting in the strange area that will be ripped out soon.
Margarita was just ok, not good just ok. Â The RumpleMinze shots were awesome. The food was really good.
When they remodel I am sure this will go to a 4 star rating, but for now it is a 3.
If you are not familiar with downtown Overland Park it is street parking and it might be easier to park in the Farmer's Market area and walk over.
There are a ton of TV's on every wall. Great to watch March Madness.
