Randone's is a solid little place tucked away in the Shopright plaza in Newburgh. While not the best pizza joint in town, it is certainly in the top 5 that I've sampled in the 4 years I've lived here. Their pizza menu has a wide variety of gourmet pies, and if you like large pies, you've come to the right place. They also make some tasty & inventive sandwiches, both hot and cold, which are some of the best around. We've yet to sample their entries but plan to investigate that at some point. Just be prepared to wait a bit when you place your order, and make sure you speak clearly when ordering on the phone and it can get hectic in there and they've given us the wrong food on a few occasions. Good stuff though.
Review Source:The good reviews all have something in common: they were written a long time ago. Randone's used to be a "hidden gem." Now it's the same quality you would expect from a crappy strip mall. Where is the chef or the head cook? All you ever see there now are young guys throwing things together behind the counter and laughing with each other. It takes way too long to be acknowledged when you walk in. This last visit, I ordered stuffed shells. The filling was watery (and I mean REALLY watery) and the shells themselves were so overcooked that they literally mush. When I brought it to the staff's attention, no one knew what to do. Bottom line, this place was once fantastic. Now the food and the service aren't even worth one star. Do yourself a favor and drive a little further down the road to Villa Italia.
Review Source:I recently went in and ordered 2 sandwiches (chicken and veal parms) and a slice to go. Â I was told it would be about a 15 minute wait. Â I stayed and waited. Â 20 minutes came and went without them saying a word to me. Â Then after about 25 minutes, someone looks at me and says "Did you order yet?" Â I told him that I was waiting on my 2 sandwiches and slice. Â 5 minutes later, someone says to me "What were you waiting on again?" So I told him again. Â Then he walks to the back and grabs my 2 sandwiches and puts them in the oven.
Overall, I sat and waited for about 45 minutes for my 2 sandwiches and a slice. Â The sandwiches were small, about 7 inches. Â When I'm paying $7 for a sandwich and waiting 45 minutes for it, I expect it to be bigger. Â When I got home, I was told that the sandwiches are normally bigger.
My chicken parm was good, but nothing extraordinary. Â No one complained about the other sandwich or slice.
I doubt I'd go back to Randone's. Â Green Garden is next door, and I'd never have to wait 45 minutes there. Â If you want good pizza in Newburgh, check out Villa Italia.
Let me start this review by echoing something that was said previously by Frank B: Randone's is a hidden gem. As Shelley mentioned in her post, Randone's is tucked away in a crappy strip mall where you would certainly not expect to find great Italian food, but there it is, right next to some dollar stare and a really cruddy grocery joint.
We were staying in Newburgh and wanted a pizza. After doing a search on Yelp we found Randone's and decided to give it a try. One of our quests on this 4 day trip was to try as many NY style pizzas as we could and this one would be our first. When we got to the restaurant and got a menu in our hands my wife and I agreed that the food looked too good to stop at just ordering a pie so we ordered a pizza (large) as an appetizer and proceeded to scan the menu. The pizza came and let me say it was delicious! In fact, of the half dozen pizzas we ate over the four day it was my favorite (the other 5 we tried were all in NYC). A perfectly charred thin crust, just the right amount of sweet yet savory sauce and a great blend of cheeses with a hint of basil.
For my main course I ordered the baked ziti with a side of meatballs and all I can say is that it's was a close rival to my wife's ziti. The pasta was cooked to a perfect al dente texture, the sauce was sweet and plentiful and the meatballs were as moist and delicious as you could ever want. The order was large enough that I had a good portion the next day for lunch. I need to also mention that the house salad was possibly the best house salad I've ever had. The mix of fresh greens, olives and tomato were good, but the deep fried onion strings and creamy balsamic vinaigrette house dressing really set it apart. It was a truly great meal.
As for the restaurant itself, it was clean, comfortable and nicely decorated. Once you're inside you will pretty much forget how cruddy the strip mall is on the outside. Our server on the first visit was great. She was a young blonde girl and I believe her name was Brittney. Regardless, she was and our table a number of times and took very good care of us. Our second trip was for take-out and while the service was a little slower and somewhat less friendly (different server) we were still happy.
Randone's has a very nice and well-priced wine list and excellent dessert choices as well. We had a bottle of Brotherhood merlot which paired nicely with our meal and was about $18.
I don't when or if I'll ever be back in the Newburgh area, but if I am I will definitely make a return visit to Randone's.
This place is a hidden gem in Newburgh hidden away in a strip mall. I stopped in for just a slice and some garlic knots and left stuffed. The chef has a fun and creative menu, and likes to try out new things with customers. I was sent a dish with steak kebabs in a Spicey sauce that were unbelievable. I didn't order them, I was just asked for feedback. I have been back a few times and have never left hungry or disappointed. 5 stars all the way.
