One order of fries is about three servings' worth. The guys are really really friendly every time I go in there. The prices are odd at first glance, but when taxes are added, they add up to round numbers. As a person who hates change, it's nice to be able to spend even dollar amounts. Also, there is an interesting heated ATM outside. More importantly, the outdoor picnic tables are fun to sit at.
Review Source:This is Gene & Judes East in a nutshell; although I think the Red Hot Ranch has better fries. Â The fries are always crisp on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside. Â This is a absolute gem in the neighborhood and they are open until 5:00am on the weekends. Red Hot Ranch, thanks for filling my tummy in the wee hours of the morning. Â I haven't tried the shrimp yet, but they look great.
Review Source:I am not sure whether I am losing it or what, but each time I come here it seems that I am enjoying myself more and more. Am I becoming more of a hot dog junkie or is it that after a visit to the Map Room and walking back home, I just seem to get pulled here by my sub-conscience? I really am not sure, but this double-dog and fry combo for only a fiver keeps calling my name, no matter what time it is. Glad to have this place across the street...
Enjoy Suckas'!!!
I use to live right next to this place and it was awesome that it was always open after a night out on weekends----I believe it is open to 5 AM everyday. The always go to selection is of course the "double dog"---priced around $3 or $4, it comes with a bun with two delicious Chicago style dogs and some delicious fresh cut fries. The staff use to know me there by name because I was such a fan. Make sure to bring cash as they don't accept cards---although there is an ATM right outside. They also provide outdoor seating which is great during the summer while enjoying some tasty dogs.
Review Source:It is the Odge's of Logan Square. Â Honestly. As someone that isn't a huge fry person, I really wanted the hotdog with a few fries, not a ton of fries, but just like Odges they come with the hotdog.
The hotdog was good: steamed, nice bun, etc. Â Easy breezy for a hotdog I will be back!
Plain bun and really rubbery hot dog. Didn't care for the fries being all in my hot dog. It took me for forever to dig them out, then had mustard all over my hands (they wrap them with the dog). I really didn't care for this place and am surprised so many people are talking the fries up. I thought they were off tasting and nasty, like they don't change the fry oil enough. Definitely a "Meh. I've experienced better" kinda of joint. Maybe one night while drunk and in the area I'll stop in again, otherwise I'll just skip it,
Review Source:After having a few, driving down Western Ave and... You know what? I need something to help absorb the wine and I'm a bit hungry. Saw it was open and so pull in.
it's clean, so nothing "suspect" there. Guys behind the counter are nice.
Double Dog with Fries and everything on the dog.
OK... This is NOT a full on Chicago Dog. Mustard, Relish, onion and Sport peppers only. And a white bun, not poppy seed.
Dog itself is fine. Good smoke, crisp at the skin and good meaty/ gralicy flavor. I do like my dogs "griddled" or grilled... But not happening here since they don't have a grill.
Fries are solid. They are "skin-on" Idaho potatoes. Cut, fried, served.
For $4.50, you are getting a lot of food. And it's perfectly FINE food. Would maybe come to try the shrimp options.
A very serviceable second option when I wan fresh-cut fries and a dog, but don't want to drag out to River Grove to Gene and Jude's. Â
Same business model, no ketchup. Â Also identical menu, but loose the tamale, add a Polish or some fried shrimp. Â A friendly staff gives clean and quick service. Â No G&J-size line. Â I'll definitely be back, as they serve dogs the way I like them.
Please note: if you don't know the difference between a typical Chicago-style dog and a Gene & Jude style dog, you may not want to visit. Â Red Hot Ranch serves them up like Gene & Jude. Â No tomato, no celery salt, no pickle spear. Â Just mustard, onion, relish, and sport pepper.
Cash only.
Very simple menu think they serve like 5 things.  Best thing on the menu would have to be the shrimp available in 1/2lb and 1lb servings and your choice of two cocktail sauces which are eh.  They also serve dogs and polish's which are only steamed dogs they do not have a grill.  The fries aren't half bad either but I would recommend getting them crispy otherwise they will  likely be a little floppy.  Overall not a bad option
Review Source:Although this is a place I would not normally visit, it was Saturday and I was a little boozed up from a byob event. Hot dogs sounded amazing and with the bf's apartment just a few blocks away, Red Hot Ranch was calling our names. We both immediately ordered hot dogs with everything. Immediately after ordering I saw the shrimp and was upset that I didn't order it. That's ok-next time I will be getting it. The hot dogs were delicious and the fries were awesome. Greasy and perfect to soak up the alcohol lingering in my system. Can't wait to go back and get the shrimp!
Review Source:This place is VERY bare bones, and frankly I'm not sure why you would go here. Their hot dogs are not very good (not particularly fresh, a bit rubbery) and they don't have the toppings selection (pickle spears, tomatoes, celery salt) that I would expect to make a proper Chicago-style red hot. Cleanliness of the entire operation is also a bit suspect, and I'm certainly OK with holes in the wall. The fries are good, but good fries aren't that hard to find. I certainly wouldn't make a special trip here to get them.
Sam's Red Hots is just down the street @ Western and Armitage, and is a much better choice for a hot dog.
ooops I should have checked in 3 times this week but never thought about it until now. I'm a huge fan. the owner is always there preparing the best... next to Cleveland's... polish boys. So darn good and they come loaded with relish mustard onion and pickled peppers. I actually want one now
Review Source:Sure, I haven't had anything but a hot dog here, but that's the point of this place existing. Perhaps my expectations would've been lower had the name didn't have "Red Hot" involved.
I will point out that another 1-star review involved somebody that seems like they've never handled styrofoam in their life. That was kind of great. That review was about as valid as one that would involve complaining about getting ketchup on your face at Burger King because you put ketchup on your napkin and then wiped your face with it.
Anyway, this place is not what it claims to be. As a previous review mentioned, no pickles and no tomatoes. They had half of the ingredients on hand to create what this city is known for. With so many nearby options, I could've never expected to be disappointed.
Meh.
I went at 2am with my girlfriend and her friend. Â We got three hotdogs and a pound of fried shrimp and a pink lemonade. Â My girlfriend's friend paid. Â We ate in the car. Â It was the best part of my week.
Two more things-
1) Those shrimps are snappy in the hot sauce. Â
2) I figured it out, whether its Phil's Last Stand or Red Hot Ranch or Jim's Original- the best fast food spots have pink lemonade available. Â Get a pink lemonade with your doggy, be it a char dog, red hot or Polish- The acid of the pink lemonade cuts the fat of your thingy.
As good as it gets for a hot dog joint - 5 stars because of the shrimp and fries in particular.
Looking for a great place to get late night eats? Red Hot Ranch is a great choice, open til 4am during the week and 5am during the weekend. This is a no frills place with only a stand-only counter inside and 4 picnic style tables outside. The menu is similarly sparse - they do hot dogs (single and double), polish, fresh cut fries, and french fried shrimp. Get cheese on the side if you want (and I highly recommend that you do).
Hot dogs are from Vienna and they have that satisfying snap to them as you bite into them. They're rolled up with an order of fries and of course come Chicago style. Nothing but a good hotdog, although the bun does get a bit mashed up when it gets rolled up. Not a big deal.
The fries are great, get 'em with the cheese. They're fresh cut and double-fried. Crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside. These aren't really fancy fries - they're just good fresh cut fries that taste great and quite possibly my favorite variety in the city; they're the right thickness too.
Now to the star of the place; french fried shrimp. Tails are removed, AND they're de-veined! They have a light breading which results in a fried shrimp that isn't overly greasy. They're some of the best I've had.
Limited menu, limited seating, but great food. For a hot dog joint, what else do you need? Perfect on those late summer nights when the weather is fantastic and you're craving fried awesomeness.
My new favorite hot dog join. Â The hot dogs are natural casing vienna beef dogs, so they're nice and snappy. Â Topped with a well steamed bun, onions, relish, and mustard, the dog is everything a Chicago dog should be. Â
The fries are fresh cut and twice fried, exactly as proper french fries should be. Â They were soft and potatoey on the inside, with a nice crunchy exterior. Â Perfection.
Open late. Â Cheap. Â Quick. Â Delicious. Â 5 star hot dog joint.
Awesome hot dog! Â It's the other Chicago style - sweet relish and mustard. Â I used to drive all the way to Gene & Judes to get one, and imagine my surprise and delight to find Red Hot Ranch. Â For $2.95 for a hot dog with fries, this is a steal for Logan Square. Â The hot dog is steamed and snappy, the relish and mustard are perfect, and the fries are double fried goodness. Â This is a five star dog. Â
I took one star away because I wasn't a fan of their fried shrimp. Â The breading is really thick and heavy with too many bread crumbs, it overwhelmed the shrimp. Â
Love the parking lot, love the late hours. Â I will be back!
Wait, let me get this straight- you live in Logan Square and you have never been to RHR?!? Â
Wow.
Now if I were to say that this place blows Gene and Jude's out of the water, you would probably have no idea what i'm talking about, right? Â Oh man, shame on you...
Perfectly cooked dogs, super fresh fixins' and amazing fries. Â
Next time you are on your way home from the bar/work skip Arturo's and swing by RHR. Â
And oh yeah, Â TRY THE SHRIMP YO!
Finally made my way here after hearing all of the good stuff and I def was not disappointed!! Â Helloooo, new late night, hits the spot joint o' mine!! Â The dogs here are almost exactly like gene and judes....but they HAVE ketchup!!! And don't give you lip about it. Â YES! Â
On top of your dog lies some amazing fresh cut fries that are worth every calorie. Â Grab a side of the awesomely deep fried (and huge) shrimp and you're good to go!!
Late night hours make this a convenient grease meal, but I came here sober and for dinner and I loved it....I can only imagine my reaction after a late night of drinking! Â Can't wait!
This is not a big place at all. Pretty old school hot dog stand on the inside to where it does feel like a real throwback.
So, I needed to get some friggin encased meats because why else would I be here. The dog itself was pretty solid, but the polish was where it was at. The dog was on the smaller side and while the polish wasn't mammoth, it was bringing some serious quality. They cram a bunch of fries into both the dog and the polish. The fries are thick and damn good. It is a bit annoying taking the fries out so you can have them separately though
Even with me saying, "why else would I go here", well, I found out why else I would go here: Fried Shrimp. They take the tails off, and the shrimp are killer. I decided on the hot sauce, which wasn't too hot. But, all I could do in my car was look at a greasy bag of shrimp just wanting and waiting, all to be made quite happy when the eating commenced.
Red Hot Ranch is cash only. I came prepared, but there is an atm nearby. I like the old school take on the place. It's humble and it's there to do what it does.
Juicy polish sausages with all the fixings, hand cut french fries made on the spot, and jumbo fried shrimp!
Need I say more? This place is straight up delicious. Greasy, yes. Satisfying, HELL yes!!
They will have your food ready fast, but heads up - it's cash only. They have an ATM outside, but expect to pay a fee.
My favorite thing to do is sit outside in the summer on the picnic benches and watch the scene on Western Ave.
I had driven by this place many, many times and had been tempted by its flashing sign beckoning me in. I finally gave in and was happy I did. Hot Dog Ranch serves 3 food items-hot dogs, hand cut fries, and fried shrimp. It's a shack with a counter and nowhere to sit inside, but you can get a hot dog with fries and a soda for $3.75. If the weather is nice, the picnic tables outside are great. If not, your car is great too.
My only real complaint is that you can't get the works on your hot dog here. Mustard, onions, relish, and sport peppers only. I like a tomato and pickle, too. Otherwise, this is a delicious dog. Also, the hand cut fries and stupendous. I have yet to try the shrimp, but I bet that's good too.
Good hot dogs, but I do miss the tomato, pickle, celery salt, and sesame seeds that would qualify it as a full blown Chicago style dog.
GREAT fries. Nice and crisp outside with bits of potato skin left on, soft and warm inside.
The fried shrimp are tasty too, much meatier than Lawerence's.
And that's the whole menu, right there.
Prices have gone up a quarter in recent weeks (which they should when gas costs $5 a gallon) but this is still solid, fast, cheap tasty food that is available from 10:30 am until late (3am on weekends, maybe later?). And yes, sometimes I like a hot dog for a late breakfast.
After my 3rd visit.... I ordered a hot dog, fries and a Dr. Pepper to go... to eat in my vehicle....As I am eating the wonderful hand cut fries...
Then all of a sudden, I notice everything is sopping wet!?!? Why? Â What's going on here?! .... When I put my straw in on a 45 degree angle, it went right through the very lower side of the Styrofoam cup and all over the place.... on my console, on the hot dog, fries and finally on my clothes....
HELLO! ....... Styrofoam cups are NOT meant for straws to be inserted in them!......... Because accidents just like this can happen!........ Styrofoam is great for hot coffee but NOT for a cola that you will be putting a straw into and probing around!!
I took the whole mess back into the establishment... as livid as I can be..... and said.... "Invest in some sturdy paper Coca-cola cups... I will never be back here again!" Â ... handed the employee my syrupy wet food and walked out the door and drove off!
Red Hot Ranch is dollar wise and penny foolish!.... You lost a customer for being so stupidly cheap.....
You lost a customer not because of your food but because of your flimsy Styrofoam cups that are NOT meant for straws!!!!
EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED!
NEVER WILL I RETURN!
I bookmarked this place after reading about their amazing fries in TOC's "101 Things to Eat" annual list. After my beloved 'Doggie Diner' on Armitage closed its doors, I was in a desperate search to find a replacement for hot, greasy, fresh-cut fries.
As much as I love high-falutin' fries (i.e. truffle, parmesan, duck-fat, etc.), there's just no substitute for salty, just-greasy-enough, fresh-from-the-fryer, cheap, fast-food fries, and Redhot (according to their sign, it's actually one word) Ranch just may be my new go-to spot.
* it's open until 4 a.m (5 a.m on weekends)
* they have a private lot, so parking is a snap
* it's cheap ( a hot dog and pile o' fries is only $3.00)
* fries are made to order
* the staff was unfailingly polite and nice
* it's absolutely delicious
I've become a regular at this place. Â The BEST fries in the city without any doubt in my mind. Â Â I love that all of the prices equal to whole numbers or to 50 cents. Â (Gosh I hate change). Â And its a bargain for some kick-butt fries and hotdog. Â
Do yourself a favor, Â get some fries, and enjoy my fellow Yelpers,
Cheers!
There's not really much to say about this place minus the fact you can get great late night hot dogs.
But! If you get a chance, heed the huge sign that says, "Try Our Home-Made Fried Shrimp!" or something of the like...but, yes, try the fried shrimp!
Delicious, cheap (for shrimp...that is bound to get more expensive due to the oil spill)...and the home made hot and cocktail sauce....delicious....so delicious. Comes in a pound or half a pound.
Do yourself and favor. Eat the shrimp.
I don't understand all the ho-hum reviews of this place.
It's a goddamn hot dog stand, people. Â And it's open late for all you late night drunky Bucktown yuppie-hipsters. Â Gives you an alternative to the umpteen Mexican restaurants across the street. Â At least be grateful for THAT.
And the building is, what, about 15' by 15'? Â Ergo they have a tiny kitchen. Â So, how friggin' big do you expect their menu to be, really?
And, though I haven't had the shrimp, I've heard they're great, for the most part, but then again I wouldn't order shrimp from a hot dog stand then bitch that they didn't taste all that great. Â And if you're dying for a burger, walk two blocks south to McDonald's or hop in a cab and find another. Â Jeez.
Stop whining, and stop being unrealistic!
Red Hot Ranch, Your fries are fantastic.
Living a block away from this place is a gift and a curse, and they are open till 5 am.
It's a gift because it's open till 5am. It's a curse because it's open till 5am.
The limited menu is due to the fact that their kitchen is the size of a bedroom. They can't fit a gigantic grill in their so why complain about that? It's a hot dog shack, you go there to get a hot dog.
Also they have picnic tables that overlook the beautiful Western Avenue, so the people watching is fantastic.
Dinner and a show.
Red Hot Ranch, WOOO!!!
Not much to say.. I expect when asked for the works on my hot dog that it have all the regular condiments a Chicago dog would have.. Really.. can a guy at least get a pickle spear and some tomatoes? I don't want fries all on my hot dog either and that happened.. I did like the fries though..
The menu is really small and isn't very impressive. How can you only sell a hotdog, double dog, polish, and shrimp?!? Also, if you're going to tout your shrimp then you shouldn't have your name touting the hot dog.. sub-par hot dog that is.. I don't think I'd go again unless it's really late, i'm around that area, and I don't feel like driving somewhere else..
So disappointed..
We finally decided to check this place out yesterday. I thought their fresh cut fries were excellent. They were not over salted which tends to be an issue I have with lots of places. I prefer their fries over Sams Red Hots. I am excited to try their fried shrimp. Hope to update my review once I do! :)
pros:
Great fresh cut fries
Open late hours
   Â
cons:
limited menu
could use more condiments on their hot dogs
Amazing Hot Dog in the city with great fresh cut fries. Â For 20 years I have had to drive 30 minutes west to get a perfect Vienna Hot dog with fresh cut fries on top. Â Any true hot dog lovers will know that this is a true Chicago Dog and no reason to drive out West. Â
If that was not enough to make me smile from ear to ear you can add the some of the best fried shrimp anywhere on the North Side of the city and the price is right for perfectly battered super cleaned shrimp.
True connoisseurs will know right away that they are doing everything right here
Late hours makes this the perfect late night stop.
