Service/bartender was attentive $8.00 for house margarita. Ok...a bit pricey. But good. Happy Hour menu perfect and delicious. Mac/cheese with Beef skewer was yummy till meat was too fatty. They gave me a new skewer and it was delicious a bit of wait ...a bit disappointing . Wine tasting at 6 p.m. for $10 was wonderfully done! Music started at 7 instead of 6 but added a nice touch. Will come again and maybe monthly. :)
Review Source:Been here a few times and tried out some of their food.
Their burgers are dry. That's why -1 star. Just dry and unflavorful. Had the Kobe and elk before. Both were dry! Hardly any sauce in there and the meat was just not good.
Pasta is excellent. 5 stars for that. I've had the pesto one and the pork cheeks. LOVE the pork cheeks. Huge chunks of tender pork with a delicious red sauce over ribbon-like pasta. Pesto one was pretty good, too, but I felt like I was going to need to hit the gym hard the next day because I know there is a ton a butter in there. Quite a heavy pasta dish but delicious.
Avoid the beef skewers. Chewy as hell. Not worth it. Tastes okay, I guess, but it was like chewing rubber! So disappointed. Couldn't finish it.
Try their deep fried cheese curds! Excellent when it is piping hot. You know it is fresh when it is obviously warm and when you pull one in half, the cheese just oozes and becomes a string between the two pieces you pull apart. Know what I mean? They've served it unfresh before and it wasn't as good. Â Only 5 dollars during happy hour.
We get to this place at 5:30 on a Saturday night, 4 of us. Â i considered making a reservation, but I figured that early it wasn't necessary. Â But the host said all tables were reserved by 6:30, and offered sitting at the bar.
Hmmm...we can eat in an hour. Â Easy. Â Of course. Â Just don't dawdle. Â But he said they liked to plan for 2 hours to turn tables over...even though it doesn't really seem like that kind of place. Â So finally we negotiated a settlement, I promised to hurry us.
And now I know why he said that. Â They are sloooooow. Â It's not relaxing; it's not leisurly. Â It's just slooooow. Â 10 minutes to take drink orders. Â 10 mintues to get drinks. Â 15 minutes after finishing to bring check. Â It all adds up, and in this case it adds up to an hour and a half
The food is good. Â 3 of us had burgers (a mistake, I think). Â If I had noticed the special of some kind of shoulder beef joint, I would have had that. Â But it wasn't mentioned by the server. Â My wife had a chicken/pasta/pesto cream sauce that was very good.
Go for the food. Â But be prepared to wait too long for things? Â And Scotch and Vine? Â Get another server. Â Or have the woman serving as a second bartender (not necessary most of the time) to wait tables. Â Or the host (not necessary much, for that size of establishment) to wait tables some.
Had an amazing meal tonight. We were burning some time before a flight out of SEATAC. Amazing cheese selection, we had a smoked blue cheese from Rogue River that was to die for. The wine selection was not huge but there were plenty of options. The mains all looked amazing and the whole table had a great meal. I will definitely be back to try out the rest of the menu! Best place for a dinner close to SEATAC!
Review Source:I am very impressed with Scotch and VIne. Â It took a while for me to get there but after trying it I will be back. Â They have a great Scotch and Wine selection and a few good beers on tap. Â We tried out the fried cheese which is a light battered Beechers Cheese that comes out fantastic. Â The peppered steak special we ordered was very good served with mashed potatoes that had a very good gravy and grilled asparagus. Â The service was very good and Happy Hour looks like it could be good.
Review Source:We've been there a few times and each visit was inconsistent. Â Our first experience was great, we really liked the food and service, and were excited to have a local restaurant like this close by. Â After that we've given them a number of tries, but the food was not consistent. Â My husband got steak one time and it was so tough it was very chewy, I had gnocci and you can just see the pool of butter, just to mention a couple experiences. Â Our most recent visit was a big disappointment. Â The restaurant was empty, except for another table or two so you would expect the service to be good. Â The food took a long time and it was just ok, nothing great. Â For the amount of time it took, you would think it would have been good. Â The Mac and cheese is usually very good, but this time it was watery with too much cream, not enough cheese. Â Other dishes we've had were also just ok.
We really want to like this restaurant having moved from Seattle to S. Seattle there aren't many good options, but we've given them a few tries and each time we end up leaving disappointed.
Brunch is a two thumb up! This may seem like a strange place to brunch, but it's truly excellent. Â I had trouble deciding between their Benedicts and their scrambles, because I'm a super egg girl, but I decided on the super tasty portobello scramble. Are you kidding me?!?!? The flavor was fantastic, the mushroom was cut and cooked perfectly. AND you get potatoes with your breakfast, yeah I know that's common but in all kinds of iterations..that isn't common. I got potato cakes..SUPER YUM, and my friend got this cheezy breakfasty potato thing that was awesome too! Â And to top it off... our server was kind, friendly and amazing!
Review Source:Very cool joint - wish we had found it earlier.
Excellent service, very good food and great atmosphere. I spent a little more than anticipated for breakfast, but that goes with the territory. And they don't have the the regular Tabasco, only the green version - not sure why.
Give it a try.
Breakfast here is beyond wonderful. As soon as you seat yourself in one of the generous booths, a friendly waiter asks, "would you like a bloody Mary or mimosa?" The breakfast selections are clever ("Monty Python Cristo" is a great sandwich) and just enough variety without being overwhelmed by choices. The breakfast potatoes are especially delightful: all three choices are well prepared and seasoned to perfection. The decor is antique and comfortable with a huge vintage bar. So far, have only tried breakfast, but the wine and spirits selection is impressive. Live music and wine tastings are featured - must make it back to try both. Highly recommended.
Review Source:I'd say 3.5 stars.
Pros:
Environment/setting. Feels very warm and inviting. Had a musician playing the night we visited.
Big selection of drinks.. I just like beer and wine, but my boyfriend was really impressed with the scotch selection. Although, the name makes it kind of obvious :)
Cons:
I ordered the mac and cheese was tasty, but such a small portion. It cost $7 and you could pay $12 for a double portion, but I was the only one hungry so I thought a single portion would be fine. But really - a double portion seems like it would be OK for one person. Maybe I'm just a pig, haha. Anyway, too much for such little portions.
Overall it was good and we'd be back, but only for drinks and not for food.
What a cute little restaurant. My boyfriend and I stopped by for dinner on a cold winter evening and walked into warmth. It's small and intimate with low lighting. It has the sort of romantic environment that makes us lean in close, laugh quietly together about inside jokes, enjoy the food and drink. It's nice but still casual enough to feel totally comfortable.
Honestly though, the food was just okay. My burger was a little too charred for my liking - although the 3 dipping sauce options for the fries was a nice touch. However, it's a little out of the way from where I live in Kent and parking is a bit difficult as their parking lot is tiny. Doesn't leave very many options besides parking on the street. I may be back if I'm in the area again.
Another great experience at now one of my very favorite restaurants. The tomahawk rib eye steak is an absolute must try and the mac & cheese with crab is the bomb! The kitchen staff will go out of their way to make sure everything is specially done just the way I like it!!! wine??? Well the wine list is over the top I am one of the pickiest wine drinkers I know any they have the best selection in every price range, I will even stop by too buy a bottle (or 2) to go! I will be back! Thank you Scotch & Vine for the perfect dining experience!
Review Source:We went to S&V based off a recommendation from a co-worker of mine, and luckily it was on groupon! Double yay! I made reservations on Open Table and though I arrived an hour early, they promptly seated us. S&V suits the name - half wine bar, half speakeasyish scotch bar. I found the atmosphere intimate and cute, but more of a bar vibe (lots of chatter).
The +1 had the No Cry that he loved. (If my +1 had yelp, he'd probably only rate burgers.) He said it was top 10 worthy, which is pretty high on the burger richter scale. I found the Nawlins to be a nice balanced burger. With a couple of stiff but yummy drinks later, we were quite satisfied with our new find!
It was one of my friend's birthday and there were about a dozen of us. Â We were seated at a long table in the middle of the restaurant, not far away from the live music playing that night. Â But, it wasn't overly loud and we were still able to have a table conversation the whole night. Â
I'm still amazed at all the choices in scotch that is available. Â The next time I'm here, I think I need to do a flight. Â There are so many to choose from. Â So, there's always something for everybody. Â
I grabbed a lamb burger, which was pretty tasty and done to my temperature request. Â It came some some spud like fries. Â One of the meals didn't come out on time and the staff comped a drink and dessert to compensate, along with several apologies. Â
Staff was very competent with our large table and even split checks for us without a worry.
Des Moines is a restaurant wasteland so I feel bad for not wanting to rave about the Scotch and Vine. Overpriced pours of wine and a $14.00 cheeseburger that was cooked properly but had no flavor has been on my mind for months. Also the obnoxious names on the menu added to the cheesy factor that I try to avoid. Â Dear Des Moines restaurant guild, Â Please give us locals a place to be proud of.
Review Source:While this place has great scotch and wine lists the food was not only not good but bad. There was a tomato bisque soup my sister and I where excited to try and when it was received it was bland and regular tomato soup, not a bisque. We even sent back the soup and were still charged the full cost of the soup. Dinner course was even worse with a very dry chicken that was nearly inedible. Â The whole time the owner was unloading boxes in jeans and standing around not making any contact with the 4 or 6 customers in the restaurant.
Review Source:This was our first visit to the S&V and I'm still on the fence as to whether we will go back or not. Â We went there for my husband's birthday on Feb. 13th. Â They were quite busy with pre-Valentine's Day reservations, but the staff was very accommodating and made room for our party of 9 at the last minute. Â Our server, Chris, was very friendly and attentive. Â We got there just after 6pm and he gave us our first round of drinks at happy hour prices, which was nice and unexpected. Â I had a glass of the house red wine and a few people in our party had beer, so we didn't really take advantage of the wine and scotch selections. Â
As far as the food, our friends ordered the steak skewer appetizer and the meat was very tough, almost like jerkey and practically inedible. Â I ordered the "Just Beet It" salad for an appetizer and I enjoyed it. Â (can't really go wrong with roasted beets and goat cheese, but perhaps I'm biased) Â :-)
After our appetizers came out, we must have waited at least 30 minutes for our entrees. Â My brother in law could see our party's salads in the food window, just waiting for the rest of our meals. Â He and my husband both ordered the steak salad and when our food finally did arrive, they realized the steak on the salads was the same super tough skewers that came out as appetizers. Â They weren't very happy about that. Â
I had the smoked chicken with chocolate pasta and it was pretty good. Â The chicken had good smokey flavor, but it was a little tough. Â The pasta was interesting, but I did like it. Â A couple of our friends orderd the Osso Bucco and they were very happy with their orders. Â It was "falling off the bone" tender and looked amazing!
After we finished dinner, Chris brought out a flourless chocolate torte/cake for my husband's birthday. Â I hadn't expected anything, so it was a nice surprise. Â Of course he didn't charge us for it and we passed it around the table so everyone got a bite. Â It was delicious and we all enjoyed it. Â
Bottom line, I honestly really WANTED to love this place, but I just wasn't feeling it. Â We try to support local businesses and love and appreciate little family owned bistros with unique menus, so perhaps we will try again in the summer.
What a disappointment!
I came here for dinner for Dine Around Seattle because their menu looked promising. Â I started out with the spinach salad and that was really good, except for the pieces of dried apricot. The bacon vinaigrette was nice and salty and sweet and smoky. For my entree I decided on the fried chicken and mashed potatoes. The server asked if I wanted sausage gravy and I enthusiastically said yes. The plate was ginormous! I got an entire half chicken atop a huge portion of potatoes and some broccoli. The fried chicken was nice and crispy but the mashed potatoes were awful! They were bland bland bland. It was like they mashed it with water instead of milk or cream. How do you mess up mashed potatoes?! The broccoli tasted like alcohol; it was cooked in way too much wine! The creme brulee was ok, good but not memorable.
They do have a large selection of scotch and wine (hence the name) . So this would be a great place to sample different kinds. But foodwise, I probably will not be back.
Although we are not from the Seattle area, some friends took us to a special meal at the Scotch and Vine. Â The venue, a bit like a local pub, but large and offering lots of scotch selections (and other beverages), was friendly and inviting. Â Our meal was in a private dining room upstairs, which was pretty nice. Â The upstairs bar was being decorated for a Halloween party; we were a bit early for that!
Our dinner, was a four course wine paired one prepared by the Executive Chef - Head Cheese, Adam Spear (taken from his business card). He was incredible, and so was the meal. Â All four courses were paired perfectly with two whites and two reds, and that doesn't include the sorbet or the scotch we were able to sample. Â Wish there was something like this in Southern Oregon! Â This is worth a visit!
Love this place, from the staff to the food. Â Excellent selection of beverages, not just scotch! Â Had a blissful experience last visit (our 4th), sitting out front on a warm evening with our dog at our feet, listening to an excellent jazz trio and eating well-prepared meals from an interesting menu. Â Whether you're in the mood for a simple sandwich (lamb burger on this visit) or more complex offering (osso bucco last time), we have nothing but kudos for the kitchen.
Review Source:My fiance and I enjoy visiting this neighborhood treat! Â A few of my favorite items include the mac and cheese, aged beef skewers and buffalo burger. Â The chefs are great!
The atmosphere is swanky and inviting. Â I enjoy the live music nights which add an extra elegance to your dining/drinking experience.
Our waitress was a little ditzy, taking too long to bring drinks which we watched sit at the bar for an extended amount of time and mixing up drink orders . Â If the wait staff was a bit more efficient I would have certainly have given a five star.
Nice bar and entertainment - skip the food
I wrote a review several months ago after stopping in for cocktail and appetizer. Â Nice wines by the glass. Â The Duck Confit was also good then, too.
A few months ago, I was in for dinner with a few folks. Â Fair service, really unremarkable food and horrendously overpriced (my scratch mac and cheese is miles better and I wouldn't hit you hard on the price).
So, I gave then another try this evening with an appetizer. Â First the grilled shrimp were served on metal skewers so hot that I burned fingers even when using the napkin to try to pull them off. Â Had to ask to have them returned to kitchen for skewer removal. Â When I'm paying $10 for two medium prawns, why do I have to do the work and incur injuries? Â Shrimp returned only to find inside raw. Â Yum. Â Next, tried the Duck Confit, thinking it would be pretty good again. Â I got a reheated duck leg (cold in spots, hot in others tells me you microwaved a left-over) on top of some sort of heavily parslied mess.
Service was poor. Â When they have to ask you if they should take the food off the bill when you tell them it's bad, that makes it even worse (and I said no).
The guitar player was great, though.
Put this restaurant in ballard, fremont, heck...even my neighborhood Columbia City and it wouldn't stay open for more than a year with the prices, menu in it's current state, and portion sizes. Â Smoke and mirrors, that's how you get fooled here. Â There is a nice look and feel as you peer into the towering wall of liquor/scotch selections. Â
$15 lamb burger topped with a leaf of mircrogreens and some cheese? It was also about 1/2 the size of a burger that you could get in any other restaurant. Â Since the wife and I were splitting dinner, because it was around 10:30 at night ,I think my half of the burger lasted about 3 bites and I am a small guy. Â It was served with a side of "fries" which was really about 4 potato wedges. Â Just not going to cut it!! Â
My markers mark manhattan (extra cost...again) was a nice drink and made well, but not something to come to the place for again. Â We also shared a beet salad and that was, well...a beet salad. Â Some beets chopped up with a little cheese.
Service was a quasi wreck also. Â When there are 4 tables in the entire restaurant currently with customers you would think service would be pretty solid. Â Everything felt disjoineted and without any flow to the service. Multiple people coming over trying to take our orders and then not knowing what was going on. Â
Overall, it wasn't a complete fail for a late night dinner. Just not worth going back for the price and quanity/quality of the food. Â Des Moines is in need of a place just like this, but I would rather spend half as much in the big city 15 min north (ie. downtown seattle).
4 stars for amazing service and of course Scotch. 2 oz. Flight pours of just about everything on the shelf. Islay, Speyside, the Highlands and more...... Nearly 250 Brown spirits in all. Everyone in the place was friendly and personable. Even though it was my first time here, I felt like a regular.
As for the food - 3 stars. Creative, fun, local ingredients and menu. Mac N Cheese had a memorable kick, meats perfectly cooked. Just a few notches shy of perfect balanced flavors by all in all very good. Pretty darn good desert menu as well.
Cheers
Enjoyed my evening at the Scotch and Vine. Â The location is easy to find, right on Marine View Drive S. Â The atmosphere was warm and inviting. Â The cheese plate we snacked on was plated nicely. Â The spicy margarita-- definitely delicious. Â After discussing the bar tending with my friends, I decided to wing it and ask for something with rum in it--I was vague on purpose so the bartender could be creative. Â I received a classic daiquiri. Was okay but not what I was expecting in the pizazz department. Â Next time I will be more specific. I took one star off for the parking. Â On a busy weekend night, parking is tight.
Review Source:This should probably be a five star review, but I've only been to a few scotch bars. Â
The goods: live local music with no cover. Â Good food, they have a cheese menu, yummy! The chef came out to talk to people who ordered from the kitchen. Cozy, but plenty of room. Tons of varieties of wines, everyone will find something they like. If scotch isn't your drink, then they have selections of beers, gin, rum, whiskey, tequila, vodka, etc. Now to the scotch...... Wow, do they have a lot of scotch! I don't think that I could, or should try that many different types of scotch. It is amazing how many types of scotch they have! Oh yea, if you didn't finish that bottle of wine that u
You liked, you can take it to go! For an extra charge though.
The bads: parking. But hey, just walk a block or two at the most. You'd walk at least that in a big city.
I am proud to have this gem in Des Moines, and will be taking out of town guests here. They have done a great job!
We had the most AMAZING evening here last night.
The DRINKS: I ordered a Manhattan and Drew suggested going a traditional route with a rye whiskey. I'll admit I was scared, but I shouldn't have been because it was phenomenal. I don't think I'll ever be able to order a regular Manhattan again. He also showed me the difference between several vermouths and I was flabbergasted at the role vermouth can play in a Manhattan - from spicy to floral to bringing out citrus notes.
The FOOD: The hubs was going to order the Gnocchi and thank goodness Drew told him it was made with squash. Hubs has a severe aversion to squash. He opted for the Gumbo and Mac & Cheese. He's in love with the Gumbo and next time says he's ordering a full vat of gumbo. I had the green salad with apple balsamic and the Tomahawk steak. There are not words to describe the 32oz Flinstone steak that comes out. Not only was it cooked to a perfect medium rare but it melts like butter. Â I was hesitant of the the mushroom ragout that is on top because I love just a plain steak, but the ragout accented the flavor slightly rather than overpowering or masking the great flavor.
It's been a really long time since I have been this impressed with restaurant. From the service to the food to the decor - it was top notch and rivaled some of Seattles fine dining restaurants. Ten stars easily.
The food was sub-par and the staff, although nice, seemed stuffy. Â The wine selection is great and they have very creative cocktails. Â The atmosphere was nice. Â Overall, I have DEFINITELY had much better. Â S&V you need to focus less on the image you are trying to uphold and focus more on the quality of food.
Review Source:Wow! Â I love this place! Â We went on a Friday summer evening. Â The front was open, letting the warm air in. Â There was live music that wasn't drowning out conversations. Â The wine selection was great and not too overwhelming. Â The food was perfect. Â There's a big selection of hamburgers not just beef. Â You can choose lamb, elk, and bison. Â They don't come with fries, but you have a option of ordering fried finger potatoes as an appetizer. Â The burgers do come with good size salads. Â Everything was super tasty! The service was great! Â I loved that you get your check in a cigar box. Â It was a nice touch! Â The menu is also priced right! I returned the next day before heading to the marina for some beet salad to go. Â I just can't get enough of this place!
Thank you so much for opening up in Des Moines!
This place is GREAT.
The food is tasty and the spirits are high (alcohol and metaphorical)!
Plus, if you're lucky enough you'll get a barkeep for whom you may recognize from a TASTEy upscale Seattle locale. ;-D
And if you're so fortunate, I highly suggest getting a scotch flight, as they know their stuff, so even if you don't....you'll be sure to have a great time.
Live music is also a perk.
This is definitely a great choice if you're looking for an intimate night out.
This great spot has put Des Moines on the map!!! The scotch selection
beats anything I have seen in New York and they know their stuff. Plus after sipping a wee bit you can buy a great bottle of wine at a very reasonable markup and have a bite or two...or a 42 ounce steak...
Great decor, super people...a real find that I think will get better and better!
Great new place!! Very comfortable atmosphere and friendly wait staff and owners. Â We enjoyed the meat/cheese tray appetizer and the unique mixed drinks.
It's about time Des Moines has a really NICE place to go for drinks and food.
We will be back soon to hear the music on weekends and try more of their menu.
My wife and I had been looking forward to the opening for some time and we were not let down. The wine choices are abundant and the waitstaff seems to have an excellent grasp of the many varieties. The food is wonderful, our meals were flavorful and prepared perfectly. The Scotch selection is unparalleled anywhere to the best of my knowledge. The owners and their entire staff were courteous and seemed happy to help us in any way they could. We felt welcome and the service was outstanding. The music was light jazz and the musicians were amazing. All in all these folks have a winning formula and we will happily call it our favorite new hangout. They also served a few "signature cocktails" for the patrons that don't enjoy Scotch.
