I love spicy food and I love that you can get really spicy and delicious food. They ask what level of spice you would like from 1 to 5 but you can go beyond 5, if you're so inclined. They'll also bring some powdered ghost pepper if you'd like to up the spice level a bit more.
I love the pineapple curry and the spring rolls. I'm so glad they moved to this location as the old one was always so cramped.
The two negative things I have to say are that it's a bit expensive and I've never had a good service experience there. Every time I've gone no matter the circumstance (lunch, dinner, busy, slow) the service has been pretty bad. I've always had to wait a long time to place an order, I've had to request refills on water, servers disappear for long periods of time, long waits for checks at the end of the meal, etc.
I just love this place. Their food is phenomenal. I've had Thai from several other places and the only one who comes close (and actually exceeds Simply Thai) is Thai Smile in Frankfort, Kentucky of all places.
I have to write a disclaimer that I've never actually eaten IN at Simply Thai, we've only ever gotten take out.
They would get five stars if it weren't for the wait time (45 minutes to an hour any time we've ordered takeout) and the fact that it's next to impossible to find a parking space during busy hours. (Why can't the mini mart across the parking lot forsake their empty spaces?!)
I will continue to go here, no need to go to any other Thai place in town.
I wish I could rave about this. It's local and it's thai food but I have been disappointed multiple times. People have been saying it is the best pad thai in Louisville, but I must disagree. It's just noodles, egg, and bean sprouts and whatever meat you chose. The best pad thai I have ever had came with carrots and green onions and cilantro and limes! So much flavor! It's what I crave! So I was bummed by my experiences here with the pad thai, it was honestly better second day and cold... Also I wish they had a lunch special where it wasn't so expensive. I have paid less for more, in the heart of Manhattan!
Review Source:Another great dinner at Simply Thai.
Wasabi pork dumplings, the spicy thai tuna roll, shrimp red curry (4 heat), chicken pad kee mao (4 heat), and a couple of Singha lite beers. Â Just a GREAT meal.
Service was typical ... poor and leaving a lot to be desired. Â I am not a restaurant owner, but I bet it is a good idea not to have your employee(s) eating dinner at the bar on a Saturday night when people are waiting and there are empty tables.
Food is 5 stars. Â Service 2 stars. Â But, the food is SO good.
Go and bring your patience.
Had a long wait, but it WAS Saturday night. Even after we ordered it took a long time for the food to get to the table, but we were in no hurry and were enjoying relaxing with friends. (Our native thai friend has explained to me that the preparation for Thai food takes some time) I ate the pork roast plate which was absolutely wonderful and my sister had the basil fried rice which was also superb. The satay was very good as were the meatballs. Everything was presented very nicely and all of the food was delicious. No wonder there was such a long line! I would definitely return when I am in Louisville.
Review Source:This is currently my favorite place for Thai food in Louisville. It is pricier than other Thai restaurants, but the food is good! The tom yum soup comes small, but the noodle plates are big and plentiful. My favorite is the sweet potato pad thai. The fried rice (not something I would think of as Thai food) is really good here. Try the basil one. I'm not a fan of meatballs but the tod mun moo here is good. The sauce is yummy and the grilled meat is a lovely combination of herbs and meat.
Review Source:With the high rating and glowing reviews I was a bit surprised when my first Thai adventure since moving to the area was such a disappointment.
In fairness, Thai is one of my favorites so perhaps my expectations were to high, but some things can't be explained away.
First, the Good.
The Tom Kha was very good. Â A while I was surprised by the use of white button mushrooms, the taste was great, and the quantity sufficient as an appetizer. Â
The Fresh Spring Rolls (not sure one a single roll cut in half equals plural, but.. minor point) was very nice. Â The vegetables were very fresh and there was plenty of mint, something many places miss. Â We had the Shrimp rather that more common chicken.
Serving sizes were good, though there was none of the more traditional 'family style' servings on things like Soup etc. that I'm more familiar with with Thai food.
And now, the not so good.
Massaman Curry should not taste like butternut squash soup. Â Yes, a hint of cinnamon is common, but I was really left puzzled and honestly, not happy at all with what is usually one of my favorites. Â There was also a huge lack of peanut - of any sort - in the dish. Â Also, having been driven to caution by warnings of their 'star ratings' I went for a 2 to get a feel for the spice levels. Â There was no 'bite' at all at this rating. Â I wouldn't have called it even mild.
My wife had the Pineapple and Chicken Curry. Â She ordered a simple 1, and perhaps they mixed it up because her dish had definite heat. Â It was also beyond sweet. Â Almost as if they had not only prepared it with pineapple, but poured pineapple juice into the curry too. Â It was pretty much inedible.
The "pot of tea" was made not with loose leaf, but using 'bags'. Â It was pretty ... blah.
My wife ordered Thai Tea with Boba (Black Tapioca). She was given instead "Bursting Boba" (lychee?) which she can't stand, and was informed when she returned it that they were out of Black Tapioca. Seems like this is something that should have been asked of her prior to just serving something else.
Service left a lot to be desired. Â Our waiter was very 'distracted' and had to be prompted for almost everything. Â When my wife commented as to her dish (she barely had 3 spoonfuls) the answer was "oh, well it is supposed to be sweet.
We will try it again. Â But probably after we've tried some of the other options around.
Having recently moved from out of state, I was trying to establish a new go-to Thai restaurant and was excited after reading the reviews. Â We both ordered the Pad Thai a good 'testing' standard, for us. Â We called in our order and it was ready in the estimated pick up time. Â The staff were friendly, too.
While what we had was delicious, it just didn't taste like Pad Thai. Â It was yummy - just not Pad Thai. Â And given that we both ordered Pad Thai, but with different meats - there was a vast difference in the base flavors. Â
There was also a vast difference in portion sizes. Â The chicken Pad Thai, was about half the size of the shrimp Pad Thai - no exaggeration
Also, the nuts were crumbled not crushed - not a fan of the crumbled nuts, either.
All this in combination with their high prices will have us continue looking around.
I love this place! However, I almost always order the same thing because it is too hard to resist! The Pad Thai is THE BEST in town by far. I am not a spice person so I usually get a level 0-1 with either chicken or tofu (my fave). It is SO delicious! I get take out several times a month but also eat in with friends/fam. I've had several appetizers as well. The edemame dumplings are perfect as is the chicken satay! I have gotten many friends hooked on this place and my boyfriend craves the chicken pad thai level 3 at least once a week! Nice inside and the staff is great too. Can get busy in the evenings but it worth waiting for. TRY IT if you haven't already!
Review Source:Yeah, take out is always an issue. Wait and wait and wait WAY after the quoted time. I don't mind up to 10 minutes or so...but sometimes it is up to 30 plus. And the food is just not as good as it used to be....take out wise. Very disappointing. I used to really really love this place.
Review Source:Reviews gave me high hopes. Â Sad to say I'm a little let down.
Jasmine tea - flavorless, utterly lacking in floraly overnotes.
Spring rolls - were full and tasty, but there should be more than one.
Green Papaya salad - this was probably the best thing we had. Â Tangy, tart, crunchy. Â Devoured it.
Tom Kha soup - very unusual in color comparatively speaking. Â Flavor was decent, ample lemongrass. Â It was just missing...something. Â Can't really put my finger on it.
Suki Haeng (with beef) - skip it, lacking in presentation and flavorless. Â Noodles had an interesting texture. Â Vegetable were sparse. Â If this is a vegetarian dish, it should be loaded, right?
Might try it again, but would probably stick to the stand-by dishes that other reviewers seemed to enjoy.
I'm always on the lookout for a good yellow curry, but when I had lunch here the other day I was feeling adventurous. Plus, no one has given me an answer other than Simply Thai when I've asked them what the best Thai restaurant is in Louisville, so I figured I'd have to try something out of the norm. I asked the server for her recommendation and low and behold, it was the yellow curry. I'm glad I didn't take this as a sign I should stick with old faithful. Instead I went with her second choice...
Woon Sen Pad Thai. Sweet potato noodles, bean sprouts, peanuts, chicken and my server suggested I add cilantro to it. At that suggestion, I knew we were kindred spirits. It was a great dish--super refreshing and filling at the same time. Unfortunately, it was not perfection. The noodles brought about an odd sensation; slippery and meaty at the same time, they were a little tough to chew.
I'll be back for more Woon Sen Pad Thai and yellow curry, but not on Sundays when they are closed (the first three times I tried to go here were always on a Sunday).
We've eaten here or ordered take-out at least 4-5 times. While the food is very good, it isn't the most memorable Thai food I've had. My wife may disagree but for me, there is that little something missing that would set it apart from other Thai restaurants and transport you to a different world with every bite...especially when you consider they are slightly pricier than your average Thai restaurant. Here are some of the dishes we ordered:
Curry Puffs (Chicken, potato, and curry spices fried in a wonton wrapper and served with a sweet cilantro sauce) - very good
Pineapple Curry (Chicken) - very good
Pad Thai (Beef) - very good
Garlic Sauce (Beef) - good
Basil Chicken - decent. Thai Siam's version is infinitely better!
Red Curry - very good
I will definitely keep going back just because the food is consistently good and the location is convenient for me. But I stand by my assertion that I've had better Thai food, and my pursuit of the best one in Louisville continues.
I just moved to Louisville, and I have decided I will probably be making my own Thai food from now on if this is the highest rated Thai restaurant in Louisville. The spicy beef salad was too strong on the soy sauce, and my wife's curry was very thin. When I asked the waiter for sticky rice with my beef waterfall he asked if that was a dessert.... I hope to find better soon.
Review Source:We're not ones to wait for a table at a restaurant. When we plan on going somewhere, we usually make reservations or go at a time we know a restaurant won't be busy. Unfortunately, SImply Thai is always busy. While that's a sign of a great restaurant, it greatly discouraged us from trying it out until over a year after moving to Louisville.
Once we finally ate here, we loved it. I'm a big seaweed salad fan, and when I saw how inexpensive theirs was ($4, compared to sushi places in town charging at least $6-7), there was no question I'd start off my meal with that. It was good, not the best I've had, but for the price it can't be beat.
My woon sen pad thai with shrimp was delicious. While I love spicy food, I don't like my pad thai to be super spicy. I took the advice of yelpers and ordered spice level 3, and it was perfect - still spicy enough to need a few water refills, but not overwhelming the flavor of the dish.
When I want Thai food at an odd time, or know I will be wanting Thai food within the hour, I will go to Simply Thai again.
Despite being fans of Thai food, it took my wife and I a long time to finally try Simply Thai, and that is simply inexcusable. My understanding of this place prior to dining here was it being unquestionably the best Thai restaurant in Louisville. Despite this being the only Thai restaurant I've dined at in Louisville, I'm going to go out on a limb and say the rumors are true: this is the best Thai in Louisville (it's a pretty sturdy branch, but I'll update my assessment as I try other places).
This place seems to be pretty crowded during prime dining hours on a weekend, so I actually found myself here with reservations for 5:45 pm on a Saturday. Despite the early dining time, that reservation seemed to be a good idea, with the packed restaurant (On opentable, Simply Thai takes reservations up until 5:45, then picks them up again at 9).
The ambiance is very relaxed inside and your opinion of this place as a "casual" restaurant or "nicer" will likely be driven by the mix of patrons in the restaurants during your visit. Our waiter was friendly and pretty funny. He dropped his notepad onto me while taking orders and handled it in a humorous, kind manner that made me instantly like him.
On the food front, everything delivered on the level that I wanted it to. The food here actually gets pretty spicy. The spice level goes from one to five. Of three entrees orders, we went for spice level four on two of them and were definitely feeling it. I had the herbed pork loin with cilantro rice, served with a sauce that was spiced up to level four. The spiciness of the sauce resulted in my waiter constantly refilling my drink glass.
Other dishes order at our table included two noodle dishes (pad kee mow and woon sen pad thai), edamame, the thai pepper and a yum yum roll to sample the sushi. Both noodle dishes were solid, the edamame was on par with other places in Louisville, the thai pepper was huge and interesting (although the pork stuffing inside kinda looked like spam) and the yum yum roll was a tasty sushi roll.
If you enjoy Thai food, this is a great place to frequent. The places are actually very reasonable and the food is very tasty and consistent. I will not wait so long to return and will definitely suggest this place to any of my Thai-craving friends.
The OG Simply Thai (in the original location) has 5 stars in my heart. Following the move, there was some growing pains and this fanatic fell off the bandwagon. I am happy to report that Simply Thai is back to it's old ways (even with a new, second location on the east end).
The staples really shine here... pad thai, pad see yew, curry dishes. My mouth is watering. Spicy level 1-5 for normies, 1-10 for the pros. The seaweed salad is also a delight.
They have a nice bottled beer selection, some decent wine, and a really great staff!
Service - Blah....... Our server was either having a lot on his mind or just didn't care. The whole atmosphere was very uncaring. We just did not like the feel of the evening. When we finally got our food we rarely seen the server again. We were not even asked if the food was to our liking. The bill was just thrown on our table. Unacceptable. This is obviously an Americanized Thai establishment as the entire server staff was no doubt college students. That's fine but if your there to serve, care about your public service if you expect more than the low end of a tip. (yes I still left a tip)
Food - This was good. Not great but good. I'm sure there are better Thai places in Louisville but we just happened to pick this one. The meat was very tender. The spice was and flavor was blended very well.
Overall - Â I can't say that I will go back. Perhaps if they clean house on server staff it may help. I never got a look at the cook(s) or kitchen but I feel this is very Americanized....... and that's too bad......
Don't get me wrong, I really like this place. I just don't love it....yet. The pineapple fried rice was great, but the pad-thai was so so. The Spice levels are a little off, I like my food off the grid spicy. My server advised me against going for the 5, so I settled on 4 and was really disappointed.
I'll have give this place another chance, but I find it hard to do when there's a lot of small hole in the wall Thai restaurants I'd rather try.
Simply Thai is simply delightful. Clean, fresh, laid back and nice all at the same time. I loved that I could visibly tell that the tables weren't on top of each other. I felt like we were there with our group and there happened to be other groups around instead of squeezing through several rows of seats if you want to go to the bathroom.
The apps are a lot cheaper than I expected. Pretty much all 5 & 6 bucks, which I can definitely get behind. The main entrees ranged mostly from about 10-15 depending on what meat (or veggies or tofu) you ordered. I also liked that the spice levels ranged from 1-5. I was getting over being sick with a sore throat, so I took it easy this time, but next time I am ready for a little kick.
The Green Curry Fried Rice with veggies was really tasty. Granted I was expecting it to have the curry sauce on the fried rice more like a dressing, and instead it was actually just fried rice with the curry seasoning. Still quite nice, but good to know. Next time I am getting the yellow curry. Yum. And the servings are HUGE! My spilling over plate served for one almost to the brim dinner and a late night snack the next day and lunch after that. For 11 bucks, I will absolutely, positively simply have to return.
Simply Thai is Simple to love. Â
To those who say the food is expensive, split an entree. Â You don't want to spend the night full of Pad Kee Mow that you finished all on your own anyhow (Hello TUMS if you do!)
Speaking of spice, I love spicy food and usually order mine to a 2 or a 3 (scale is 1-6) and find that to be enough to tickle my tastebuds without crippling me for the rest of the evening. Â I have yet to get adventurous and try a 6, but one of these days I will be bold enough and try it out and hopefully be able to report back. Â
Nothing on the menu is bad if you like good Asian food, portions are generous, and it's a fun place to go, minus the sometimes long wait and slow service. Â That is when having this place on speed dial is a godsend, and the food is always ready when promised when you do carry-out.
This Spice Level is Always Five out Of Five!
I love this place. Large portions, reasonably priced, and simple no frills yummy Thai food.
They will tell you that a 2 is mild, but trust me when I say a 1 is more mild and a three is the last chance to stop before it's hot both ways.
Now unfortunately the secret is out. So do not expect to show up and not have at least a 15 minute wait. The insides are more , how many can we fit versus intimate, but when the food is this tasty who cares?!
They have authentic Thai beers and teas for the Beverage lovers.
They are expanding to popularity, so do stop by. If I lived closer, I would be using their taking option frequently.
This is a solid Thai choice for Louisville. Their Pad Kee Mow (drunken noodle) was above average, and the spice levels were perfect (even at a three it had a punch). The Pad Thai isn't bad but not the best I've had particularly in texture. The sushi is also not bad but not good enough to come there solely for that.
The ambiance isn't bad, and the service both for eating in and carry out was good.
We loved this place. Showed up at the dinner rush with our two young children and they found us a table in less than 10 minutes. We had the pad thai, the red curry and beef fried rice. All were delicious, but the red curry took first prize. The potatoes were cooked perfectly and I could have drunk the sauce as a beverage (but didn't as far as you know).
The service was very friendly. It was very busy and our server forgot to bring the large Stella Artois we ordered. When we reminded her she brought us two Stella and didn't charge us for either. Everything else was prompt.
We will definitely be back soon.
Solid choice for the St. Matthews area. Â The food was really good. Â
Somehow the 1-5 spice scale worked way better for me than a typical mild/medium/hot continuum. Â In other Thai restaurants, I've ended up with food that was either bland and sweet or too spicy to consume. Â Here I got the right amount of heat for my palate. Â
Continuing in the vein of "it's the little things..." they have lousy iced tea. Â It is one of those crappy Gold Coast dispensers, where you select a flavor choice and then it dispenses whatever instant flavor through the central tap. Â This is like calling that powdered drink dispenser at the gas station "cappuccino." Â Sorry, but you can't have 5 stars if you don't brew your own tea.
This is a long overdue review because it's almost been a month since I've been here, (and I live in CA), but I had such a pleasant experience here that I just had to share. :)
I Came here with some friends for lunch...
This place is spacious, clean, well-decorated.
Our waiter was very friendly and helpful and all the food was delicious, (we sampled 5 different curry and noodle dishes-all of which were bueno). I was surprised when you could choose from 1 to 5 how spicy you want it... COOL! I ordered a 3 and I started slightly sweating on my brow, I wonder who could tackle the 5... Anywho, great restaurant.
4/5 stars only because they recently moved across the street and I'm not sure the kitchen and wait staff have completely found their footing in regard to service and timing of meals.
The food, when it comes out fresh and hot, is delicious! The chicken pad thai is great - probably American-ized but I love it. They also have a great salmon dish - slathered in mango sauce -- delicious.
Also, if you like fresh, light healthy sides - there is a spring roll app and it's always done right. Beware, it's NOT fried, it's wrapped in fresh rice paper - great!
4.5 stars???!! wtf really?
Let me start by saying that I happen to live in a city that has a large amount of very good thai restaurants. So maybe im a bit spoiled when it comes to my flavor/execution expectations for thai food.
That being said...this might have been the worst thai food ive ever had. But my complaints about the food pale in comparison to what i have to say about the service.
My family has ordered take out here many times and they have never picked up an order without something missing. The last time we ordered take-out they missed three out of five items. Honestly as someone who has worked many years in customer service(and completely understands that every business has its off days), I am appalled at the continuing lack of attention to detail.
All of that could be forgiven if the food was good. but its not.
Bland and boring.
Seriously there are better options elsewhere.
Amazing.
Seriously, I could make this the shortest review ever by just saying that. But really, the vegan and vegetarian options are phenomenal, and I've never seen another thai place offer TVP. For an awesome meal, try spring rolls + pineapple curry with tofu + a finisher with black rice pudding. Oh, the amazing ness. Seriously. Warning though, it's a crowded little place, although I think they are expanding ... but as it is, do yourself a favor and call ahead for carryout if your craving comes at 7pm on a Friday for you and 6 of your friends. Cause there's little chance you'll be able to get a table.
First 5 stars I've given in a while. We love Simply Thai. Great food, super clean facility, patio, friendly staff, what more could you want?
I had: iced green tea and Pad Thai with Chicken.
Hubs had: Basil fried rice with chicken. Both of us had spice level 1 of 5. It was still pretty spicy. We would describe spice level 1 almost as spicy as hot Mexican salsa, FYI. Next time, these wimps might choose 0 spicy for a try. Also basil based dishes come out spicier because the basil adds a little kick of it's own.
Tip: A great lunch stop to split a dish for $4 a person, $8 a dish.
Best Thai food in the area. Â I didn't believe it until I tasted it but Simply Thai beats the pants off of Mai Thai in Jeffersonville, In. Â The spring rolls are the freshest I've ever had. Â They have a good crunch to them immediately followed by a refreshing mix of vegetables. Â The two times I've been to Simply Thai I had the pad thai and both times I nearly wept with joy. Â
http://static.px.yelp.co…
The food is perfect and you can order the spice level of your food on a scale of one to ten. Â
The restaurant is tiny so unless you're getting takeout you may have to wait. Â However, the wait is worthwhile.
This is the best Thai food I had the pleasure of eating in Louisville. I'm in the Bay Area now, where Thai food abounds, and of course I've only scratched the surface of the Thai available in these parts. But I still haven't found any I like as well as Simply Thai. Â
I've never been to the jungles in northern Thailand, but I know what I like, and their red curry and pad thai were out of this world. Â I'm not subtle when it comes to flavor, and these dishes (the pad thai and red curry) will hit you like a freight train. Â
I lived about 5 blocks from the restaurant, and as such, never dined-in; we always had carryout.
Obviously "The D" has no idea that this restaurant is owned and operated by a Thai family. They do all the cooking as well. Chaveewan & Mahn, along with son Jade Saing all cook...as well as Jade's 2 other brothers. Â
While living in St. Matthews, we ate there well over 100 times (no joke). Â We never had anything bad on the menu...and we had EVERYTHING on and some not on the menu. Â The restaurant is VERY VERY small... 3 four tops, 7 two tops, and a few tables outside as well (depending on the horrible Louisville weather).
Being from Phoenix, I never thought I would miss anything about Louisville, but I can't seem to find as high of a quality of Thai food in both taste and freshness as they provide here in Phoenix.
As for the Sushi, it is by far the best I found in Louisville. Â From what I remember, Chaveewan even won some award for sushi too.
