This place is what it is. Don't ask more from it. And apparently, it's the only type of restaurant that can make it in Avondale Estates. The chicago dog is great. Good fries. This is food you eat at a high school sporting event.

had the philly cheesesteak and fries. The boy had the spicy chicken sandwich. He stated they have the best chicken sandwich. Philly cheesesteak was enh. Not good but not bad either.
Another reviewer stated they had no bathrooms. They actually do but they are outside the building.

Just ate here about an hour ago...

The place is very casual and clean, and the service was good and very organized. The hot dogs and hamburgers are very good, especially their onion rings (the GOOD onion rings) and their chicken steak sandwich. Serves coke products (has cherry coke!) and known for their Chicago vienna beef dogs. Overall a good place to grab a quick bite.

I kept coming back for the Italian beefs (dipped, with hot peppers) and Chicago dogs, but have recently discovered the delicious spicy (not really) grilled chicken sandwich and BBQ pork sandwich.  Yum!

    Wow, color me unimpressed.

Went here the other night since it looked cheap online and I had a Scoutmob, so me, the lady, and the chirren could eat for a reasonable fee, and we had some errands to run so we didn't want to spend a lot of time eating. I should have known being cheap and quick wouldn't lend to it being good, but oh well.

Easy to find on the main drag through Avondale, big yellow sign and plenty of parking. We swung in to a very empty lot, but it was 5:45 so we figured no one was eating dinner yet. Walk inside to a very small place, smaller than anything fast food around, with no bathrooms either (that could be bad if the grease hits you quickly). Scanned the menu and presented my Scoutmob which landed me a free Chicago style dog. Now I should have read the menu better, but the Chicago style comes loaded with more veggies than a salad, which sucked. Anyway, also ordered a brat and burger, my lady got the brat combo, and the chirren got their special, a pulled pork BBQ combo. Took maybe 10 mins to land our food and they weren't that busy, and I can honestly say the three employees looked like they'd rather have been anywhere else on Earth than at work. True it's a boring job, but have some life in you if you know you have to do it.

Food came out, sat down to eat, and became disappointed quickly. The Chicago dog as mentioned was covered in tomatoes, peppers, onions, and a few others things I didn't recognize, once all scraped off I was greeted by the most pitiful looking stick of meat I've ever seen. Tiny, overcooked, it looked like a BallPark dog that had been boiled for three days. I loved the poppy seed bun, but that was about it for the hotdog. The brat was better in size, but after biting into it I learned there were onions IN the brat. Not on, but actually inside the meat. WTF? It didn't hurt it too badly but it did leave a ting in my mouth that I don't enjoy, I only like green onions, and usually uncooked only. The burger wasn't a burger, it was a hockey puck. Small, dry, and burnt black, just horrid. My lady's brat was ok but she only touched a couple fries, they were salty as hell and lacking any flavor. The chirren ate a few more fries than we did, but the BBQ was coated with cooked onions which she didn't like, so she ended up pulling it all apart and just poking at the meat a little. All in all it was a real disappointment, confounded by the price of over $21 for it all. $2.79 for a burnt to death, maybe 4oz burger? Seriously? $1.79 for a drink?

No thanks. The poppy seed buns were the only saving grace, but they weren't worth the rest of the meal.

Pretty alright. Pretty good for fast food. Was more expensive than I would have expected it to be. You definitely get what you would expect.
    Service is nice.
    That's about it.
    Oh &:
Be careful, they do clean their milkshake machine early. Not a great place for a late night ice cream fix.

Maybe it was an off night. There were 2 people ahead of me but it took over 20 minutes for my order. And no one came in after me. Come to find out, they forgot about my order.

Anyhoo, the hot dogs were good. But I have to say that I am comparing the Chicago style dogs I ordered to the Chicago style I have eaten in Chicago. I lived there for a couple of years so my taste buds still have the memory.  Basically, if I'm craving a hotdog but too lazy to make my own AND I'm in the neighborhood, I would go to Skip's.

The Maxwell Street polishes are decent, but the Italian beefs aren't the best I've had outside of Chicago. And the wait is always epic, probably because 2 out of 3 times I've gone in the last few months, they've gotten my order wrong.

OK.  A few quick notes before the food review starts...
    1.  Poppy seed buns are not part of the menu here because people in the South can't seem to get their heads around the idea.
    2.  You are not back home in Chicago.  Trust me.  I wish I could have my Parky's (Oak Park, IL).  But I can't. I deal with it and so can you.

Now to the food.....  Great! Food is simple. I have never had a bad meal here.  And I have eaten here well over 50 times.  Chicago dogs are good (no poppy buns, but at least they steam the ones they got).  Philly Cheese Steak is amazing.  Skip's version converted my wife into a fan of the sandwich.  Italian beef is good enough.  Definitely try the tamales.

I always try to stop in when if I'm anywhere near the place.

    Closed on Sundays.

This place may have a Vienna sign and Vienna hotdogs, but they wouldn't know a Chicago style dog if it bit them you know where. 1) Ketchup does not belong on a Chicago hot dog. 2) Through the garden means give me those veggies. I had to take my hot dog back to get the toppings. 3) I can't eat onions. Don't give me onions when I specifically say no onion.
I was treated rudely from the second I walked up to the counter. I guess I'll just have to keep looking for that decent Chicago dog here in Atlanta. Respect the dog. Respect the customer. What's so hard about that.

I've had several items from here.  Being the only fast food game town locally for hot dogs, burgers, and such we have made it a staple.

The chilli dogs were pretty good, but my favorite has been the chicken tenders with fries.  Add some boom-boom sauce and they are out of this world.

Plus, Josh told me if I didn't give a good review, he would roll my house...  ;)

Skip's is East Atlanta's answer to Chicago style eatery.  If it were only closer to home- since it knocks Bobby G's (Chicago eatery located in Milton and Linbergh Station) out of the park.

This place looks like it came out of the late 70's, early 80's- and I am perfectly alright with that.  This is everything Chicago, so don't start ranting on how "great" Atlanta sports are....

I came in to order the Italian Beef.  It came up pretty quickly.  For $6 and some change, I got a monster sandwich dipped in juicy goodness. This was a sandiwch at it's finest.  There is so much to try, that when I come back (oh yes, I will!) I will re-review it, and I am confident it will get 5 stars!

The people are very nice- and I even think Skip was cooking that day poppin out orders!

The restrooms are outside, and they even have a catering office as well (omg, Skip's catering?!!?) behind the actual store.  Hell, there is even a drive-thru!

There is a cool tidbit that Atlanta Magazine gave Skip's a shout out too (I posted it under the pics)- all the more reason to check this place out!

When I am having a chicago dog craving, Skip's definitely hits the spot. The Italian beef is also pretty great. I can't speak for any of the other menu items, and probably won't be ordering anything else as long as they keep serving these delicious chicago dogs. They load them up with all of the iconic toppings you would expect.

I come here for a very specific craving and they knock it out of the park every time.

Black Friday, decorating the tree with a friend over in Chamblee, we decided to grab a bite to eat.  We tried going to a local barbecue place, but they were closed.  Suggestions started zipping around since neither of us wanted "fast food" like the big chains, but something comparable and unique.  We were both craving hotdogs, and since she works in the area, she suggested Skip's....

The service and the food are both amazing.  I ordered onion rings instead of fries with my meal, and when I went to pick it up, there were fries.  He forgot to ring them in on the order, but they were cooked fresh anyway, so he just threw them into the basket and said "Happy Thanksgiving, it's on me"  Talk about making a fat cat happy!

Their hotdogs are cooked perfectly, and they don't skimp on the toppings either.  It's a bit of a drive for me, but if I'm in the area again, I'll definitely be stopping in here to get something to eat...

Hotdogs are pretty good but they will not honor a coupon.  If you try to use, they will either tell you coupon is only valid for certain items or will only give you a credit for the lowest $ menu item regardless of what you order.

    Beware of coupon cheatsters...

I just moved here from Chicago (born & raised) and was looking for a taste of home. This was a sad substitute! The hotdog was the smallest little thing I've seen on a bun. It was warm, not hot. The toppings were not crisp crunchy like they should be. The  cold fries were as dry as they could be, but I shouldn't have expected much once I saw them being scooped up from under the lunchroom heating lamp with the wrinkled look of my 95yr old grandmother! The best thing about our meals were the fountain drinks (can't mess those up I guess) Wasted $11 for 2!

The burgers are so cute and perfect looking! It looks like a little greasy cafe, and it kind of is, but it is charming in that. The workers are all super nice and friendly and the burgers are just so cute I can't get over it. They are on the small side, but that just adds to their cuteness. Their fries were nice. I like this little place.

My friend (a native Chicagoan) and I went here the other day.  We've both been before and were happy to go again.  I had the combo, which is an Italian sausage inside of an Italian beef, and my friend had a dog and a beef. His order came with fries.  As before, everything was good, hot, and tasty.  The service is competent and the place is a great value!

The best Italian beef sandwich I've had in Atlanta, customer service oriented, and fast service. The owner, Skip, was even there to take my order and chat me up. Gotta love an establishment that values its customers!

Great Chicago style (Vienna beef) dogs and onion rings.

I hear they serve other things but I wouldn't know..

I really wanted to like Skip's, but the dogs were very underwhelming and the burgers were just average. Its pretty cheap but it can add up quickly if you want more toppings on your dog. The onion rings were really good but the portion size was not worth the price to upgrade (I don't remember the exact price but I'm fairly certain it was over a buck). I may go back at some point to try something else but I certainly wouldn't go out of my way for it.

Love, love, love Avondale Estates and love Skips with it's Old style Chicago counter, restaurant that looks like it was built inside an old house  & don't forget the good food. Got the cheeseburger & fries when I got there (yeah i know I went to a hot dog place and got a burger).  Good food and even better service.  I'll have to go back and try a dog,  hmmm sounds like a good idea for something to do today :-)

I've been eating at Skip's since the early eighties.
The burgers and dogs are really great and the prices are very reasonable. For that, they get three stars. After all, it IS just burgers and dogs. The char-grilling makes them stand out over other places.
Then why FIVE stars, you ask? Well, the extra two stars are because of the AMAZING customer service!
I recently had the pleasure of having Skip's cater a party at my house.
    The entire experience was fantastic!
They were punctual and professional. I didn't have to worry about a thing.
Everything was included for a very reasonable price.
They brought a grill, tables and a tent. All paper-goods, condiments, beverages and ice were provided as well.
All of my guests were completely happy with the product...and the fact that they all knew Skip's as a local establishment.
Jonathan was our "Grill Master', and could not have been better.
Gabe made me feel like a part of the family.
I'm already planning my next gathering and you can bet your sweet butt that I'll be using Skip's.

I like Skip's for the most part. The food tastes great and is always cooked to order which means it's good and hot. Is it mind-blowing and earth-shattering? No. But it's a good place to grab a dog, crispy fries and cold cold root beer.

I had a dream of biting through taut skin into a juicy meaty footlong.

Not gonna happen here. This sad dog reminded me of something from 6th grade cafeteria lunch. Thin foil wrapped, wrinkly steamed doughy bun, and a measly five inch dog. Ew.

    Cheers~

You can imagine my excitement when I discovered there was a place that served Chicago style hot dogs in the metro Atlanta area. Now, I am not a fan of the traditional Chicago dog because come on it has tomato on it and we all know tomatoes are evil. Anyway I digress. I like to have my modified version of a Chicago dog. A little mustard, ketchup, pickle and grilled onion. Yum yum!

Skips fits the bill when I need my special dog created. The service is extremely quick and the staff very friendly. I highly recommend you stop by and do yourself a favor.

One of the best short-order counters I've ever seen. Easy menu, tasty onion rings, and some of the best burgers & dogs in the business. I'll have to go back to try the Italian steak sandwich, dipped.

But let's be clear about this place: if you're up for healthy, ultra-raw, green eating, Skip's is not for you.  If you want a solid burger, or a Chicago dog, or some Italian sausage, meet me there...

I'll keep this short and sweet.

Good Chicago dog, but only because you can't really get one anywhere else around. No poppy seed bun though.

I had one of the worst chili slaw dogs that I've ever had here. Chili had beans in it. Everyone knows that hot dog chili don't get the beans. Slaw was terrible.

Fries reminded me of a school cafeteria.

Service was good, but man, kinda crappy hot dogs. This is like the third time I've been here and I really want it to be good, but it ain't.

I've been going to Skip's for AGES. I LOVE their chili cheese and kraut dog, I used to live on it when I danced in high school (10+ years ago...) so I was very pleased when I went in the other day to take my after school kids for lunch (day off) to find that it was just as good as I remembered!

The service was fast, even though we had 9 different orders it didn't take 15 minutes to process and they kept the rest of the single item orders moving along fluidly. The kids really loved the place, from the bright green slaw to the chicken tenders and fries, I'm not sure there's anything they do badly! I think the chili is perfect for hot dogs, I love the warm, soft bun on the dog, it's all perfect.

I'm not one to give the North props when undeserved, but Skip's definitely proves to me that Chi-town may have something over A-town when it comes to [hot] dogs!

Skip's is addicting. Their dogs are great, just the right size. I can't get enough of their Chicago dogs! Cheese slaw dogs are also good. The only problem is that I inevitably want to eat Skip's on Sundays and, alas, they are closed!

As you all know im a hot dog lover so my quest in Atlanta is trying to find the prefect chilli dog.... I just happen to be returning from the Deklab Framers market and ran acrosss this place.....

To me it was lil pricey it was around 10 bucks for  2 chili dogs and a fries, but hey I'm all about supporting your local business.....

I love the fact that the bun was hot and soft the hog was your regular beef dog, but I just wasnt sold on the chili so my search is still on people!

Not the worst but still not the best so far.....

I'm pretty bummed that I didn't like Skips.  I really wanted to be in french fry onion ring heaven at Skips, but it just wasn't meant to be.  Even though it was cheap, I still thought the price was too high for what was pretty bad food and small portions.  The onion rings were good, but I got, oh, about 5 of them.  I flat out stopped eating my Italian beef sandwich because I didn't like it - waaay too salty.  The fries reminded me of the ones you get at Wendy's - which I only think are good if dipped into a chocolate shake.  But alas, I had no shake... in fact, I went home hungry and made myself some pistachio pudding to feel better.  Oh well =[

Pretty average fast food spot, but I LOVE the chicken cheesesteaks here.  Definitely go for one of those if you are in the area.  Decent shakes too.  I can't comment on the hot dogs since I'm not much of a hot dog fan.  It isn't a chain which is nice.

I'm a fairly classy chick, but were I to be, say, driving with a loved one whose hunger and curiosity impels him to desire to stop at someplace such as Skip's Hot Dogs, I would totally be up for the caloric adventure.  Such an occasion arose yesterday, though, unfortunately for me, Skip's was no gem in the rough.  Granted, I am much more of a bratwurst kind of girl, but I thought my hot dog was far too scrawny and bland, and the fries equally flavorless and two too many hours old.  More problematically, the staff seemed bored and surprised that we, the only patrons, had stopped in.for an early dinner after an afternoon of touristing downtown.  The last straw for me was the lack of public restrooms.  Take a hint from the management, who have blocked and cordoned off half of the apparently very unused dining area so that they don't have to clean it should unsuspecting visitors such as us decide to stop in: stay away, unless you really, really need a hot dog while driving on Avondale Rd.  And should you find yourself in that situation: go through the drive thru!

We were craving a good corndog and weren't disappointed this past weekend.  I've only ever had the hotdogs & Polish sausage at Skip's, but was very pleased with their corndog.  It was fresh and didn't taste too greasy.  It sure tastes a lot better than the yucky ones you get a festivals!!

This place is great.  Their Chicago dogs are GREAT.  I don't know of anywhere else in Atlanta where you can find them.  It's run by nice people and they use high quality ingredients.  Simply put good food at a good price.

Things that seem greasy I usually avoid. So when I past skips hotdogs for the first time I laughed. At work when we couldn't figure out where to go for lunch I'd always joke "we can go to skips! they use authentic vienna sausages!". One day somehow I got everyone to go. We loved it.

They have authentic Chicago dogs, something I never experienced before. It's a hotdog with relish, lettuce, tomato and peppers. It's really good. They're milk shakes are the cheapest you can get in decatur. I got a supreme tamale with chili once, it really warmed me up.

It's still greasy and the relish looks liked it's dyed nuclear green so I imagine it'll slowly kill you. Everything in moderation, the place has the proper use for grease - to make things tasty. Try it out with friends, it's fun.
