One word YUM!
If you are looking for a super creative menu, Steel probably isn't what you are looking for. Â However, if you want fabulously fresh rolls and a great atmosphere - Steel definitely is.
I came in on Friday night and the restaurant was surprisingly full even though from the exterior it looks rather unsuspecting. Â We were greeted by a decent enough waitress and made were ready to order in no time given that everything looked so delicious.
We started with the crab and mango spring rolls which were incredible. Â All of the ingredients were so fresh and there was a small sprig of mint inside the rolls, making for a pleasant surprise.
Next up - SUSHI! We went with the Hawaiian roll, the Ahi Tower and the OMG roll. Â All were equally delicious and made us wish we had bigger stomachs that could handle more. Â
I have eaten A LOT of sushi in town and its safe to say that this is the freshest and most thoughtfully prepared in town. Â It really isn't that much more expensive than your other sushi spots and even if it was, it is well worth the price. Â Need a better incentive to come in? Â Every week, Monday - Friday they have select rolls for only $4 between 5pm and 7pm
Visited steel at 5:30pm.... Â We were the only three customers in the place... Â They told us we had to sit in the bar area with our five year old if we want to order off the happy hour menu... Â Funny thing is my daughter and I have eaten there five other times, not in the bar, with no trouble... Â FYI steel, the most expensive seat in a restaurant is an empty one. Â I use to be a regular customer, now I'm not a customer at all... Â We went right down the street and spent our money !!!
Review Source:This place is the WORST sushi place I've ever been to. Â Went there yesterday on a Saturday night around 8PM. Â We didn't make reservations and I didn't think it would be that big of an issue, but to that bitchy hostess it was. Â The original hostess had offered to seat us in the lounge, which was no problem but when she had walked up, she made it seem like it was the biggest deal in the world. Â After bickering over the issue, we were seated. Â The lychee saketini was too strong, you couldn't even taste the lychee, the miso soup was too salty and lukewarm, like it had been sitting out all day and the sushi was just ok, overpriced if you ask me. Â To top it off at the end, the 2 girl hostesses were chatting away disregarded us as customers and ignored us as we left. Â Even as we left, we said "good bye" not them! Â This is absolutely the rudest establishment ever. Â The hostesses aren't even good looking to be rude! Â Don't go here..the restaurant will probably be gone just like the other restaurants around the corner of this building!
Review Source:I am a fan of Steel. Â I love their happy hour. They have $4 sushi rolls and $3 off all drinks. Â My boyfriend and I went there for date night. It was perfect for a Wednesday night. Â We had 3 rolls and a few of the $4 apps they had on special. Â All of the food was good. Â We sat in the bar area and the bartender served us. Â He was awesome. Â I am giving Steel 4 stars because it doesn't seem like somewhere I would be dying to go on a Friday or Saturday night, it looks a little expensive for what you get. Â We will be back for a week night/ date night because that happy hour was just too good to pass up.
Get the spider roll for happy hour! Best $4 sushi roll I've ever tasted! :)
Mediocre sushi... didn't try the hot items on the menu, but they looked good as they came out for other people around us. Service was TERRIBLE! Â They have a menu for the sushi where you check off the items you want ( can't mess that up) we ordered 1 item ( an appetizer ) not only did he forget to put it in, he did not even know what we ordered, instead of owning up to the mistake he blamed another waiter for taking it. Â The guy had ONE thing to put for us and he got that wrong. Food to me is important but I am stickler for service! SERVICE SUCKED!
Review Source:Over rated. Â We really enjoy sushi and have hit most Dallas spots. Â Everyone has raved about Steel so we finally got around to trying it out. Â It did not live up to the hype. Â You'll get better sushi, sashimi, and rolls at Oishi on Wycliff at about half the price. Â Also Yutaka in Uptown puts this to shame. Â You won't get the atmosphere at Oishi and Yutaka, but you'll save a ton and get better food.
Review Source:Solid Asian Fusion restaurant. Â Wine list isextensive, and a bit above market value from what I experienced, but that is probably to be expected as this is a "hotspot" for athletes and other Dallas socialites. Â
Food was solid, if not overly stimulating - sort of in line with what I would expect. Â For business dinners, it is more than a suitable option.
My husband and I went for Valentines dinner and the night started off bad when they tried to sit us in the wine room with a bunch of 2 top tables. We asked to move to the main dining room and it took a few minutes to figure out where to seat us (when there were at least 6 open tables). Â Our sushi was amazing, but lacked the presentation and looked a bit sloppy. I had the shaken beef and it was great! My husband had the Sea Bass and that too was amazing. The service was a lot slower than we have had before. Overall, it was a good night.
Review Source:I went here for a business lunch last week and had a great experience. Â It had been years since I had visited Steel and am anxious to go back again. Â We shared some edamame and calamari to start and then I tried the shaken beef as my entree...all of it was delicious and very flavorful. Â The atmosphere is nice and the service was great too!
Review Source:This was a really fun "date night" dinner. Â We had planned on going to 560 for cocktails and sushi in the bar, but apparently everyone else in Dallas County had the same thought, so we ended up at Steel. Â We were able to get last-minute reservations on a Saturday night, which was fortunate as the place was quite busy. The sushi was good, but not life-changing. Â They were out of Toro, which probably in my best interest because I really don't need to be paying $9 for a bite of fish. Â
The best part of the evening was the floor show. Â It is definitely a fun place to people watch...a tale of two cities...it was the best of times and the worst of times. Â Couples dressed to the nines and fired up to do Dallas sat alongside four college-aged boys who were buying shots for two young women who were trying a little too hard to get picked up. Â It was more fun that going to the movies!
I live for sushi restaurants and this is one of the better places to go. They have a varied selection, although most of it is cooked sushi and I prefer raw, and it seems to be of decent quality. Some places are able to get better cuts of fish and this place seems to struggle a bit with doing so. The atmosphere is very nice and relaxed while still retaining an up scale vibe. Some of the waiters seemed a little slow and didn't always take care to make sure orders were completely correct. The waiters also didn't seem very personable or very willing to talk with their customers to make them feel welcome. Â They did have a nice selection of beers, not many on draft, as well as a large selection of wines of varying quality and price.
As for the regular appetizers, soups, entrees, and desserts, they were right on par. I started with the scallops with mango salsa, these were to die for! It only comes with two so make sure to share. For soup I had the miso, it's not the best I have ever had but it's still pretty delicious and a nice serving size. For sushi, I had a tuna roll (plain, no wasabi) the tuna was a bit lean and not a great cut of fish but still good. Tip: if a sushi restaurant has awesome tuna the rest of the sushi will be just as amazing. I also had yellow-tail roll which was pretty delicious. For my entree I had the salmon curry which was hands down one of the best dishes they have there. I didn't have a dessert at my last visit but the one before I had the bananas foster which was amazing but it seems they took it off the menu. I'm sure you could ask if they make it still though. I give this restaurant a 3/5 because of the staff's inability to converse with customers and their sluggishness also their ability to disappear when they are needed. I also gave a less than perfect score for the fish quality, and lack of raw sushi varieties on the menu, I know most people like cooked sushi but for those of us who like raw, it's annoying to see a focus on only cooked shrimp and crab tempura rolls
Lunch is pretty good here. I had a Chilean Sea Bass bento box and Miso soup. Bento Box was plentiful and the sea bass was delicious. The sea bass looked like a big scallop and had a texture like it as well. The California roll included was one of the best I've had...and it's just a simple roll! It was very warm and seemed to melt in your mouth instantly....yum! Â Miso soup was served in a medium sized bowl...bigger than most places I've been to and just as good. Â I also shared the Dallas Roll with my friend and we both did not like the roll at all. It was considered a special roll, but tasted very average. There's also free garage parking in case you don't want to valet. Certain selections on the menu is pricey, but not too bad for sharing with friends.
Review Source:Horrible experience! I originally loved this place. But after dealing with a horrible experience where we found HAIR in our food. Manager came and took a look at it apologized. Our waiter presented the bill, asked to speak to the manager again he refused to comp the bill!!
I will never go there again there are a million sushi places in Dallas!!!

FREE SUSHI Wednesday!
Well, sort of. It's a free plate of mixed sushi/rolls of their choosing when you order 2 drinks. Go with a friend to speed up the free fish arrival at your table. Sake prices were reasonable, and delicious. 5:30-7pm only, so get there early to fully enjoy the 'free' eats.
Way overpriced and pretentious place for mediocre sushi. Â On top of which the customer service here is atrocious.
Did you know they charge a $25 cake cutting fee?! Okay, Mr. Assistant Douchebag, I get it's your policy or whatnot, but how about letting a patron know before you put it on the tab and say there's nothing you can do about it. Â From the moment, he walked up to the table, he refused to listen to the situation and repeating that it was policy. Â If you really cannot comp it off or do anything about it, at least be apologetic to the customer. Â Way to ruin two birthday girls' dinner and make one of them cry. Â Biggest douchebag award goes to you.
Save your money, time, and sanity, and go elsewhere. Anywhere else.
So I may be the last person in Dallas to know about the Wednesday happy hour special... Â but it's true. Â Free sushi.
They open at 5:30 and the place gets packed by 5:35, so be there on time... but just order a drink and lo and behold, free sushi arrives at your table. Â They come by every 10 minutes or so to bring you more - you don't even have to ask. Â It just appears. Â AND their other appetizers are happy-hour priced as well (the calamari is great). Â
Between 4 people the other night, we had 5 drinks (beer or wine by the glass) + 4 appetizers... all in all we spent $45. Â Not bad for a complete meal with alcohol. Â Score!
I was taken here for lunch this past week. WOW. I had the Chilean Sea Bass bento box and holy hell - was it phenomenal. The sushi was OK. I have to say that I enjoyed the sea bass way too much.
The restaurant itself is pretty swanky. Our waiter was great. All three of us ordered the same thing, so it wasn't anything complicated. One thing I did notice was that we DID have to make reservations for lunch. I found that a little pretentious..but hey, it was a great lunch.
I've visited their web site and have seen that they offer sushi rolling classes for $55. Plus they have other fun events that look intriguing. I'd probably visit again. The bento box is definitely the way to go during lunch!
After a strong history with the sushi happy hour, I finally got to dine here. Â I let Greg order the wine and even the food. Â I barely even looked at the menu. Â I'd say this place fights solidly into a Dallas expensive restaurant mold - the food borderlines on being boring in an attempt to please all tastes. Â Food is fresh, and pretty much is left to stand on it's own. Â No risks are taken. Â The ambiance is nice, just wish the food had more wow.
The tempura banana dessert was recommended, didn't sound so great, and tasted like a fancy versino of something I might get at one of those cattle call chinese buffets.
You'll have a perfectly fine meal if you can affford it.
I went in last night for the second time.
The first time I was in I had a wonderful experience. Food was fantastic and service was stellar.
Last night was a different story. Food still great, free sushi for happy hour. We also ordered some Tempura vegetables and would have ordered more food if we werent treated so horribly.
We arrived at 430pm. They didn't open until 5 we were told. The hostess also suggested that we go see her friend at Cyclone Anaya's and to come back for a table at 5. We happened to know her friend from the Palomar so we happily agreed to go. We returned and it was as if the hostess had never seen us before. We had the entire conversation about her friend again when we told her that we did go to Cyclone Anaya's afterall. We recieved our table after we waited for a few minutes. We noticed several waiters standing around, it wasn't busy yet, but kept wondering why it took 10 minutes for one of them to come greet us. We ordered a round of beers while we perused the wine list, deciding which bottle to order. After we recieved our beers the sushi started to hit the table. We were looking for our waiter to order our bottle but after a while decided for more beers.
We decided to be the people he assumed us to be.... There for strictly free sushi. Unfortunately that wasn't the case and Steel missed out on creating a great evening for us. We are all in the industry and would never go to a place to reap the freebies and not order anything ourselves.
To sum it up....
You are a burden to the wait staff if you go during happy hour on Wednesday. They try their best to ignore you and get through happy hour and let the paying customers sit down.
Sucks that we were the paying customers who never got the chance to order.... The above mentioned Tempura Vegetables were actually ordered through one of the server assistants who was walking by...
Better luck next time..... I can't believe I still tipped so well!!! I want my money back!
People-watching in Dallas is always so fascinating to me, especially during the lunch hour at places like Steel. Lots of Ladies Who Lunch in their two-piece sweat suits, salon blown out hair, and fancy handbags.
Steel is a lovely sushi bar: white linen tables, beautiful wine collection visible behind glass wall, open sushi bar, very attentive service, and pricey. Very pricey. But it's worth it... kinda. (I mean, it is sushi after all. You may leave stuffed but soon as you get home, you're hungry again!)
If you choose to start with some fried calamari, request it grilled - absolutely delicious. It's served alongside three different spiced chili sauces and with a bed of sauteed (but crispy) onions. I was craving seared ahi tuna, so I opted for the bento box ($15). It came with a scoop of white rice, eggroll, side salad, two pieces of California roll ... and maybe something else. I really didn't eat much of it. The tuna wasn't sear at all; it was thoroughly cooked, so I didn't enjoy it. Luckily, the calamari filled me up and I also tried a piece of Alaskan salmon. Fresh, but dang. Expensive. I mean, really. Who spends $130 for lunch (and that's with no alcohol!)?
Heard on Wednesdays they offer free sushi (ahem, FREE), but it's super packed. Ya don't say?
Service was top-notch and the atmosphere is very trendy. Â I had the Sea Bass appetizer and it was melt-in-your-mouth AMAZING! Â I also had the Firecracker roll, which was tasty as well, but definitely try the Sea Bass. Â
There is a parking garage across the street, in the building's garage, and valet. Â I parked in the building's garage and it was free, which is good, because the food its a little on the spendier side.
Recently went back to Steel and even though I really wanted to order the calamari for an app. I decided to go with the beef tataki. Seared beef served with red onion. It was really, really good but I think my fav is still the calamari.
For my entree I ordered the dragon roll. This had crab, shrimp, avocado and eel. Presentation was amazing. It came out literally looking like a dragon with eel for the eyes, shrimp tail for the tail and ears. Very impressive and melt in your mouth good.
Steel still hasn't disappointed me.
This place just wasn't anything special to me :(
Atmosphere was nice, but not that nice. Service was great, friendly, and cool.
Food was good, but not great and very expensive.
We only ordered sushi.
The paradise roll: salmon, mango, & jalapeno. It was really fresh and tasty. Good balance of sweet and spicy, great roll for summer.
The Dallas roll was really bleh...so bleh that I barely remember what I had on it except for the dried out piece of albacore on top.
Firecracker roll: spicy tuna, w/ avocado, crab & jalapeno. They forgot to mention lots of mayo.
Rainbow: Cali roll topped w/ tuna, salmon, & white fish. Typical roll you can get anywhere, but theirs wasn't any better than anyone else's.
Probably won't go back.
Steel brings back memories! Â I associate this restaurant with Wednesday nights!
Wednesday is all about free sushi, edamame, and $5 martini's!!! How can anyone pass that up?!? Â I use to come here all the time for their Wednesday happy hour and be in sushi (actually rolls) gluttony mode. Â Way back when, they use to have free edamame and then they stopped. Â Who knows what's going on now? Â I haven't been in ages. Â However, I know I had a great time each time. Â A see and be seen joint! YES. I definitely met some cool and not so cool people. Â The secret is coming early on those happy hour days and scoping out a table in the back bar area to reserve for your friends. Â OR, if you have a big enough party, you could call ahead in advance and they would do that for you!
Besides Wednesdays, they do have a decent menu. Â I've had everything from their bentos, to cooked fish dishes, to sushi, rolls, dessert. Â Their menu is an almost hodge podge of japanese/korean/vietnamese concoction, so with that said--expect what you think you will expect. Â One of my favorites is their dessert--Chocolate Sushi (they make the dessert like sushi rolls, even with ginger as candied ginger and wasabi as an imitation candy or some sort). Â So creative and presented delicately that you don't want to eat it!
BTW, I love the wine room.  Check it out--you'll know what I mean.  The décor to the restaurant definitely sets it apart from some others in the city. You'll enjoy the ambience and scene around you.  So, if you catch my drift, I come here for a good time!
I think Steel is outstanding! They have great sushi and an entire separate menu in addition to it.
Not only is the fish very fresh, but the rolls are quite creative too. My favorites are the Firecracker roll, Chef Jeff Roll, Pico de Gallo Roll and the Mt. Fuji Roll. On the main menu, the Vietnamese Shaken Beef is outstanding and so is the Sea Bass. If you want a non-sushi appetizer, the beef tataki is spicy and delicious.
The service is always great and they have a good wine list. It is more expensive than a neighborhood sushi spot, but it should be for all the right reasons. The atmosphere is trendy/nice. Wednesday night is the happy hour with free sushi (only selected rolls) from 5:30-7:30 and discounts on certain drinks. I'd recommend making reservations for this because it gets very crowded and they will bring the sushi to you if you have a table.
Extra note: The wine room is great to reserve for special occasions or big parties.
ALSO, I forgot to mention that on Sundays, all bottles of wine are HALF PRICE!! =)
I heard Wed is the popular night to go, but this review is based on a Thur-night. Â It was a cool trendy-looking place. Â I was told it was a sushi place... but no one, not one person was at the sushi bar. Â It's funny, because in California it would be the complete opposite... the sushi bar would be full with a long waiting list and the tables would be nearly empty. Â
My friends would say that I am very particular when it comes to sushi.  I prefer sitting at the bar and establishing a rapport with the sushi chef by sharing saki with him.  I like to watch him slice the fish and assess how fresh the sushi is. Â
Anyway, despite not sitting at the bar and the fact that it took a long time before the food was served, the sushi was pretty good.  Perhaps the saki helped.  We did also order (cooked) sea bass which was delicious. Â
I can't review the cost, since he paid for dinner, but i doubt it was inexpensive nor astronomically priced... the usual.
Disclaimer: This review is just for the Wednesday happy hour. Â From what I've gathered from friends and reviews, the restaurant itself is too expensive and full of itself to be worth your while (hey, unless you like that sort of thing, to each his own).
Here's the deal. Â Wednesdays from 5-7, you need to go here and check out their sushi happy hour. Â It's free. Â Yes, free. Â In the back bar area of the restaurant, lines form for patrons to fill their plates with various types of sushi rolls (typical ones have been spicy tuna, california, crawfish, etc.) Â Fill up your plate and feel free to get back in line, as many times as you wish. Â
It gets pretty crowded, so it's common to just stand around, share tables with others, eat outside in the front patio-ish area if the weather's nice, or hell, just fill up, get back in line, and eat while you wait to fill up again! Â I believe there are also a limited number of tables you can call ahead and reserve for the happy hour as well. Â Free parking is available in the garage.
No, it won't be the best sushi rolls you've ever had, but it's not bad either and you can certainly make a meal out of it. Â What do you expect for free? Â You'll want to partake in their delicious $5 martinis or cheap beers while you're at it.
Steel is "steel" (har, har, bad pun!) my favorite. It's my go-to for nice sushi dinners and I still love the lunch bento boxes.
Anyway, got the scoop on some nice seasonal things I think Yelpers will enjoy. Steel has a few new sushi rolls with fresh fruit in them. I tried the Paradise roll - tuna, mango and jalapeno. The spicy mixed with sweet seems like an unlikely combination, but the quality of this roll was outstanding. It's not for the faint of heart - the jalapenos still had seeds in, so one piece may send you scrambling for the water glass - but it's totally worth it. Kona kompachi was there tonight too. It was the best I've had in Dallas.
Brandy fruit foster is always my dessert stand-by, but I branched out and tried the chocolate bento box. Nom, nom, nom. Pomtinis, mango martinis and all the speciality drinks are winners as well.
I went to Steel a couple of weekends ago with some girlfriends. Â I had not been back to Steel in awhile. Â The reason I gave it three stars as opposed to four was because of the waiter we had.
This place definitely has the ambiance, but the waiter must have had an "off night" like the manager told us. Â For the price we paid, the waiter should have been more attentive and less on the sarcastic side.
The food took awhile, but I was also with a group of nine. Â Our shaking beef, vegetable clay pot and calamari were served on the same plate. Â The waiter informed us that the reason the food took so long was because they messed up our vegetable clay pot twice. Â They should have checked our other dishes because the Shaking Beef was served cold. Â The waiter acted as if we were inconveniencing him when we told him that the Shaking Beef was cold. Â When he brought out the new order, he said "Now its like you got another order for free." Â We weren't asking for a free order. Â We just wanted a nice hot dish. Â Who wants to eat cold beef? Â
We barely saw the waiter during our dinner. Â I just feel that for the price you are paying, you should get better service. Â The food is good, but go if you want the ambiance, you can find the same food elsewhere for cheaper and better service.
Good place, great people watching, good drinks and $$$$
Not cheap, however don't go when your starving.
If your short on dough, eat at taco-bell first, then come here and spend $30 on 2 drinks....
This is a typical trendy restaurant..... I love it when they ask me if I have reservations (even though its dead).... and then the look at me with the "i can't believe you don't have reservations look".. and then look puzzled trying to find a spot for me.... (even though 90% of the place is empty)..
Anyways... the sushi (rolls) are good...4/5 star... drinks are good.. 4/5 star... and service is 3.5/5 star. restrooms are 5/5.
So I was in Dallas over the weekend, and although I thought I would be eating BBQ and Coleslaw the entire time I was there, I actually didn't. Thank God.
So yes, a few moments I got off the plane, my pals said we're going to Steel. All I knew is that this place was Japanese Fusion of sorts, and coming from San Francisco, I was curious to see how this would compare... In my head I was like, Fresh sushi? In Dallas? Dallas isn't even near an ocean... but this place had it. The food was beautifully presented and the restaurant itself was pretty snazzy. I liked how each table had a spot light over it so the food was dramatically showcased. This place would be a good date spot. Mmm hmmm...
The service was beyond outstanding, our party of six was definitely not sober from waiting in the bar area and our server was incredibly patient and gracious when dealing with us. I didn't have to ask for my water to be filled once (which is very important!)
It's definitely expensive and Meredith is right, make sure you bring your AMEX, or in my case, someone else's :)
So this place reminds of a great deal of swank L.A. restaurants - lots of hype, lots of attractive people (clientele and employees), lots of atmosphere, and lots of $. Â But hey, I'll admit I'm sucker for good atmosphere, hype, and attractive people (who isn't?)
I digress. Â Went here on a Thursday night and the placed was packed. Â They had people waiting at the bar to get their reservation tables. Â Sushi menu is more creative and extensive than the typical sushi joint. Â Chef took some creative liberties. Â
Overall food is pretty good. Â Service was snotty. Â Prices were wheew...my expense account saved me from doing the dishes but I still had to fork over half from my own kitty. Â
Don't go there unless you are looking fierce. Â They valet the Maserati's out front.
The first time i ate at Steel was on my birthday last year. I liked the atmosphere but i didnt really like what i got.... :/
I went back with this girl that i work with used to work at Steel so we went for Happy Hour sushi on Wednesday.
This girl that i went with orders everything that is good. i love it, since she knows the menu so well, i trust her choices. everything we go was delicious, the service was excellent and the pom martini was really good.
I am a huge dessert person, the fruit foster and the fried bananas were AMAZING!!!!
My wife and I decided that Steel would be the place we check out this year for Restaurant Week, mostly based on the reviews on here. Â Thanks Yelpers, you steered us in a great direction!
Keri started with the Sushi Sampler and I had the Rock Shrimp Tempura. Â The shrimp were fantastic, and the Firecracker Roll from the sampler was the best sushi roll either of us has had in a while.
Next up was the Sea Bass for Keri and the Shaken Beef for me. Â The Sea Bass reminded us both of the Butterfish from Roy's, which we both love, but not as rich. Â That is a good thing, as I can only take a few bites of the Butterfish before I'm overwhelmed. Â This Sea Bass was amazing, but as amazing as it was the Shaken Beef was even better. Â Served with caramelized onions, cilantro and cherry tomatoes, with white rice on the side, all on top of a fried wonton wrapper. Â The beef was perfectly cooked., and the mix of ingredients with it was perfect and in great proportions.
For dessert I had the banana egg roll, and Keri had the molten chocolate filled cake. Â Her cake was good and so rich she only ate about half of it. Â The banana roll was so good that I couldn't help but eat the entire thing. Â Both were served with homemade cinnamon ice cream, which on its own would have made a great dessert.
Keri chose the optional wine paring, and was quite glad she did. Â All three selections went perfect with the meal, and when we asked the waiter what the final wine was he gladly wrote down the information for us so we can try to find it on our own.
Overall, great food, nice ambiance, real friendly staff, well worth our visit on Restaurant Week. Â If they always had this same pricing, my review would be a 5 star. Â However, given their regular prices, I can't see us going here often. Â The sushi was great, but not great enough to justify the cost to us, and if we want to spend this much on dinner we'd likely go to the Oceanaire. Â Having said that, I'd gladly come here if friends wanted to, and plan on returning next year for RW.
