Unhappily, we did not enjoy this restaurant-the coconut soup was inedible, it was way too bitter, I think they overdid it on the lemongrass..and, as for the rest of the food, it was decent(nothing special)and both of my dining companions were sick afterwards.
Sad, considering the dearth of good Thai restaurants around.
The service was great-I loved our waitress, and the price was reasonable..but the fact that both my companions were sick does not bode well for this place.
    Will not return.

Have been here before and always enjoy the food. This time the food as usual good but when the service was just awful not that we waited long for service it was just the services was just disconnected no clearing appetizer plates when dinners arrived when I suggested that they make some room they were just annoyed.
When the bill arrived I thought it was high as I was about to leave a tip I noticed they took the liberty of already adding a 20% tip to the bill ( which is what  I would of left anyway) when I inquired  is that the normal practice for such a small group the answer was the computer sometimes does that I think not. Will never return the owners need to get out in the dining room and take control.

I was pleasantly surprised to find such delicious Thai food so far from the city.  I recently ate here on a busy Saturday night, and felt very welcomed by the staff.  We ordered a number of appetizers and 2 entrees.  We found both the green curry and the pad thai to be delicious.  The service was attentive despite how busy they were, and the prices were reasonable.  We will definitely eat here again.

Awful Thai food and overpriced.  The beef is always tough like rubber.  I really want to like this place, but it's just not good.

Best place for Thai in Orange/Dutchess County area. The owner is also the chef and takes extra care when preparing her dishes. I've never had anything I didn't like. They are very accommodating with the spiciness of dishes. All the dishes are made to order so if you are in a hurry go to different restaurant.

Save room for dessert, they have a nice selection.

Sukhothai is a great value. You won't be disappointed.

Overall: Came for lunch on a Monday a few weeks ago around 11:45am with a party of three. Great location in a burgeoning cultural area, friendly ambiance and staff, reasonable pricing, shockingly poor service, and very unimpressive food.

Areas for improvement: The service was clearly lacking in speed and attention and though we very graciously discussed this with our waiter, who apologized, nothing improved throughout the meal.   Five parties that arrived after us were served (the same food we ordered) and left the restaurant before our food even arrived.  After noticing this, we were laughing in good nature and searching for hidden cameras, wondering if this was part of a TV-show prank.  We waited 40 minutes after ordering for our appetizer to arrive and 50 minutes for our entrees. We needed to request the condiments tray three times before it was finally delivered. 2 minutes after our food arrived (1 hour after arriving at the restaurant), I needed to leave for work.  Unique spices and flavors I expect from Thai food were noticeably absent, likely drowned out by an overabundance of soy sauce and salt.  I was able to salvage the dish thanks to the condiments available. The pad thai and pad see ew dishes were dripping with oil, which caused the texture of the noodles to be mushy and unappealing.

The waiter appeared distracted and confused.  Perhaps an off-day or first day on the job?  He was sincerely apologetic and offered us a 10% discount at the end and I can't bring myself to blame him.  Maybe a lack in the level of management since the restaurant was clearly understaffed.  There was a recent change in the schedule (used to be closed on Mondays) so perhaps the flaws could be attributed to that.  I'd like to imagine that a different visit would reveal a better side, but this experience left me extremely dissatisfied and disappointed, since I was hoping to find a good Thai restaurant!

Good ambience, and helpful waitress but what is the point if the food is going to be sub-par in taste.
Another thing to watch is they will charge you for a refill. Lot's of other better places in the area. Avoid if possible.

After visiting Beacon and Bannerman's Island, we were looking for a place to eat in this town, but we did not want to go to a diner or a pizzeria. There was a large round booth, you can say, in the middle of the farmer's market located right by the docks, and it had a poster with "Places to eat" section, which listed Sukhothai as one of the many options on Main Street. We drove down and did not really see much except a few pizza places, a diner and what looked like an Irish pub. So I said "Thai it is!" and we kept driving until we reached the place. It is right across the street from this interesting brightly painted building and near the waterfall. The restaurant has exposed brick walls that don't necessarily associate with Thai decor, but give the place some character. We wanted a quick meal, so we ordered a salad, chicken pad thai (for me) and sukhothai chicken (for husband). Portions - huge! Taste - basic Thai food. Not horrible, but not spectacular either. It was filling, but it didn't really "wow" us. Neither one of us finished the meal, mostly due to the size. I think it's a good place with an extensive menu but very basic taste.

The atmosphere was great and the food was great, don't get me wrong, but it was rather pricey for lunch (including tip), and even that wouldn't deter me from rating this restaurant 3 or 4 stars if, on the third time that I had gone, I hadn't gotten two long hairs in my pad Thai! The restaurant gave me a free ice cream, which was great for the long day in Beacon, but attention still needs to be called to this display of horrible hygiene.

This is my favorite Thai restaurant in the area. I've enjoyed every meal I've eaten here, so it surprised me to find that others have found it hit or miss. The drunken noodles with chicken (I order it very spicy), is my favorite dish to order and I haven't found better drunken noodles elsewhere! They chop up fresh chiles and use them in the dish. I also really enjoyed the naem sod (sour and spicy ground pork) which had amazing flavor. I also like the ambiance, with the brick walls that are ever-present in Beacon.

I've been here twice and have enjoyed their food. I've had the drunken noodles and green curry with rice and both dishes have the right amount of spice and the portion size is good for the price. The dining room is open, clean and features a great portrait of the Thai royal family. Service is friendly and efficent even on busy nights. I will defaintly come back when I'm in Beacon.

Nice place. Most of the dishes were good, though not of the "authentic" Thai variety. The beef in the beef curry, however, was chewy from being overcooked.

I recently visited Sukothai during lunch hour , and the experience was very nice. the food quality had improved from my last 2 visits. Both the dishes were nice, the complimentary drink and spring rolls were a nice touch.

We go here occasionally and it is really not very good. The curries seem to be the best bet here but the pad thai is seriously the worst I have ever had. It tastes like they have added...tomato sauce? It is almost like eating linguine, it was making me gag in fact. The thai toast is however, bizarre and delicious- greasy goodness.

I don't know, I would probably go here more even though it's kind of sub par, but the people that run the take out and register and front of restaurant are usually surly and not that nice. To echo another reviewer, they definitely could use some decent management as it does have potential but it is just ...not good. Should be interesting to see how they fair with the new thai place opening up down the street which I am really looking forward to!

Mediocre at best. I had been here a few times years ago and thought it was pretty good. Then about 1 1/2 years ago I had a terrible experience including a messed up order and clueless waitstaff. After a sabbatical I went back in August and it was a solid and decent meal. A few weeks later I went again to pick up food on a Sunday. Im not sure who the owner or manager is but apparently they were not around (or just not very good at their job). The place wasnt very busy at all and it took more than 5 minutes before I was even acknowledged. Seemed like a bunch of college-age kids who couldnt care less about their job quality. Anyways, after getting home I noticed something that made me stop eating and just start laughing. My curry had CANNED pineapple chunks. Seriously? A place that can make sure to get genuine kaffir lime leaves is unable to take 2 minutes to cut some fresh pineapple chunks for the day?  They are back on my blacklist. Maybe in another year or so I will give them a shot again but for now I suggest to all my friends to not go to Suck-othai. Maybe a drop in business will get the owners to try and identify the problems.

Delicious! Love the food every time I go there. Usually I get the Pad Thai so if you're looking for a recommendation I'd say get that. It's always been really good. Portions are a nice size too. Cute, locally owned and operated restaurant.

We arrived here at 6pm and we were the only people in the restaurant for the first half hour! A little strange, but it was nice and quiet. Good waiter service - he was very knowledgeable when we asked his advice on appetizers. He suggested the Thai Toast, (marinated ground pork and sesame on a square of toast), and it was delicious, served with a light vinegar sauce.  I ordered a shrimp/pineapple red curry and my boyfriend ordered a duck/pineapple red curry, both had carrots, bell peppers, and tomatoes.  The Thai iced tea was made well.. it is something we've ordered in other Thai restaurants before and this one was very yummy.

You can order your spice level custom and I asked it to be hot. He asked if I wanted American hot or THAI hot, and I ordered Thai hot. I was expecting it to be unbearably hot, but it was actually quite tolerable. I have a high tolerance for spice, but I have definitely had spicier than this. The main courses were served with white rice... the rice was a little dry for my liking. I like fresh, steaming, moist rice that sticks together. This was sort of like day-old rice from a Chinese take-out. That was really my only qualm about the meal.

Good food, nice atmosphere, but nothing spectacular.

I've been to Sukhothai probably about a dozen times since living here in Beacon.  I can't comment on all the food though because I'm stuck on the Sukhothai Duck which is absolutely amazing by the way.  I like the atmosphere but there are a couple of things that could improve.  Most of my visits there were spent waiting quite a long time for the food.  If all the other dishes are as great as the duck then I'd say it's well worth it.  Best to order an appetizer at the same time you order your drinks so you have something to work on while waiting for the food.

Best things to order- drunken noodles or panang curry (I got mine HOT but not THAI HOT it came out just right, spicy but not so hot that you can't taste it)

Not so great- the fried tofu with peanut sauce appetizer.  The tofu was a bit dry, and it's hard to make a peanut sauce I don't like but this one tasted like peanuts floating in oil.

The restaurant itself had a very nice atmosphere and our waitress, who seemed to be taking care of every table in the restaurant, was pretty efficient

This place is what I imagine authentic Thai cuisine would be. Having never been to Thailand, I don't have much to compare it too!  Nothing about Sukhothai is haute cuisine, but they aren't pretending that it's anything other than just good food.

We find the portions plentiful, and like the fact that most of their dishes can be spiced to order - from very mild to hot.

On our recent visit we started with Sukhothai Mussels - which were the largest mussels I've EVER seen and very delicious and the Chicken Satay - which was perfectly cooked.  I could have enjoyed a bit more sauce, but it was flavorful and very peanutty.

We chose two different curries for our entrees.  Panang with Tofu and Massaman with Chicken.  Both were very good, but the husband who likes his very hot, was a bit disappointed in the lack of heat, but loved that the tofu was fried before being added to the dish - rather than just thrown in as a afterthough.  I on the other hand can't do heat, so I ordered my dish mild, and honestly felt it was a bit too mild.

After tasting my husband's "very hot" curry, I thought the heat was fine for me, so I would say if ordering, don't be too afraid to just order the dish as-is- the spice isn't very hot at all.

Service was fine - nothing to write home about, but no major issues either.

We had a good, reasonably-priced meal here and had plenty of leftovers. If you're looking for authentic Thai food - it's definitely worth a visit!

I'd add another half star to make it 3.5 stars if I could.

We had been to Sukhothai years ago when they first opened and had such a bad experience that we did not go back. But having been on a quest for enchanting Thai cuisine we realized that we needed to give them another chance. We are glad we did.

We went in for a late lunch so it was a bit quieter than at a traditional lunch hour. So we had the place to ourselves and luckily great service. Of course we started with a Thai iced tea. I am quickly becoming addicted to these things and while it was not the best one I have sampled of late it was pretty good. The menu was very well thought out and concise. Various curries (Massaman, red, yellow or green) and pick a protein. I chose the Massaman Curry with tofu. The tofu was cooked before it was added to the curry which was perfect. I think it lacks real creativity and passion when tofu is just cut up and thrown in as little more than a passing thought. The portion size was perfect for a lunch and was colorful and flavorful. The accompanying rice was well cooked and rounded out the fragrance of the curry while offsetting the mild heat. I was very pleased. The L. had the Pad Thai and a side of sticky rice which was a little past being dry but it sure was sticky. Once it was mixed with a generous spoonful of my Massaman sauce it came into its own.

The restaurant itself is very pleasing to the eye with exposed brick and warm tones. I got a kick out of the giant photograph of the Thai Royal Family hosting a special event, I think it was an investiture. Pretty cool though to see the foreign dignitaries in their nation's traditional dress and everyone coming together. Anyhoo, I digress.

I would not not go back to Sukhothai. Our server was proficient and they have several veggie friendly options for me. I am glad that they have gotten their act together and hope they continue this upward trend as we would love to patronize a really local Thai establishment.

Once again, Chira and her fine staff outdid themselves.  It has been awhile since our family has been there, but we were welcomed back like we had never been away!  My Brother and his wife were up visiting from florida, and it was time to make the trek to Sukhothai in Beacon for the best Thai food in the Hudson Valley.

It was a cruddy night weather wise, so traffic was low, but the staff seated us in a timely fashion, and drinks and appetizers were ordered pronto.  Spring rolls for all to set the tone and ready the palate for some spicy goodness.

Our meals were hot and steamy, with just the right amount  of spice for everyone's taste.  We had Massaman curry, Spicy beef, Khao pad, Pork n veggies, Yummy Chicken noodle soup, and Yellow curry.

The menu allows you to browse the full range of plate genre's, from veggies with curries, fishes, and ,land mammals, all prepared with authentic Thai love and care passed down from Chira's roots.

We had taken a few of her cooking classes a few years earlier, and we could see from the minute we met her how proud she was to share with you her Thai heritage, and the methods and recipes she learned from her Mother and Grandmother.  Thats's good stuff!

We wish Chira and John the best of luck this year, and look forward to many more wonderful nights at Sukhothai.

The food tastes authentic, but it feels like the owners and the waitstaff just aren't trying... The place is a little messy and the dishes really are hit or miss. Best entree to pick if it's your first visit: Chicken Curry, any color's a winner but Yellow is best!

I wanted to like this place, I really did. The vibe is fine and the staff is sweet. I thought it could be part of the charm of a local place that my tea mug had lipstick and encrusted something on it when served to me. Especially when a restaurant isn't busy, that turns me off but I tried to keep an open mind.

The menu has plenty of options, with reasonable prices and very generous portions. Unfortunately, my soup arrived just lukewarm and our dumplings were ice cold and rubbery from obviously having been stored in the fridge. They warmed up the dumplings upon request, and seemed embarrassed, but even the dumplings round two were crusty on top from age and having been refrigerated and reheated, monochromatic and yuck. My husband requested soup instead, and the tom yum was pretty flavorable.  My tom kha was fine. Not the most flavorful, but it had some subtle galangal flavors which were above average.

The panang curry was delicious and had a generous helping of both chicken and fresh veggies. The spices were well done and it was a great dish.

We were disappointed overall, especially after reading that it is the best in the Hudson Valley Our search for NY's best Thai continues

Have been here many times as I am both a Thai food devotee and a (sigh) resident of the Hudson Valley. There just aren't that many options available, thus the sigh.

Sukhothai can be great. Unfortunately, it is not consistently so; it is not consistently anything. When our jones for Thai becomes unbearable, we roll the dice and head to Beacon. And sometimes we come up sevens, sometimes we come up snake eyes. We were there on Saturday night, and while the place was hopping -- the food was decidedly one-note. The roasted duck in red curry was (as always) a nice sized portion, but the curry sauce was the opposite of complex. The Pad Thai was lifeless. The whole crispy fish was OK, but not the transcendent experience I hope for when I have that particular Thai speciality. And the tofu in Penang curry was just mind-blazingly hot, without any real flavor to accompany the heat.

I'm sure I'll be back again at Sukhothai in the not-too-distant future, but I will be saying a few prayers before we head out the door and hope that we catch them on a good night.

2.5*, rounded up for the thai iced tea.

Ate lunch here after DIA:beacon.  Tried the som tam, Massaman curry (chicken), and drunken noodles (tofu).  Thai iced tea was huge and a tick above average.  The food was served in ample, less-than-flavorful portions.  The Massaman was pretty good: not bad at all after stirring in half a dish of chili paste.  The drunken noodles might have been salvageable the same way, but the som tam was probably irretrievably out of balance.

A waitress explained five levels of spiciness to another customer within earshot, but we weren't asked and were served what I pray was the lowest level.  This is a solid 3* rating if asking for spice while ordering works as advertised.

I've just spent a solid minute clicking between 2-stars and 3-stars. 2 stars or 3 stars? Why are there no half options dammit?

2 stars it'll have to be. You know, i've been here quite a few times before and after my initial yelp review, but after this last time, i'm thinking i won't be heading there willingly again.

I went on a hot date... with my mom - her choice of eatery... and we were seated immediately upon our arrival. I commented to my mom how every time i came here, it seemed like adults were never present to run the restaurant. Which would be fine, except each time I come here, the food and experience gets progressively worse.

In short, our waitress was pleasant and helpful, the other high-school kid behind the register, not so much. I deviated from my normal pad-thai experimentation and went for the drunken noodles, my mom tried the twice (thrice?) cooked beef with salad. We each ordered a thai iced coffee and thai iced tea. Food came quickly, presented well by a pleasant server. Our drinks were smacked onto the table by the aforementioned register-tender (a bad day perhaps?).

The food sadly, was truly sub-par. And I'm saying this after having spent the day fasting. Yep, fasting. After NOT eating for more than12 hours, one would think that the first taste of food hitting my tastebuds would illicit an orgasmic sensation. Not so much.

Drunken noodles were BLAND, and my mom's dish was basically just salty. Flavors? Missing in action.

Hungry for nourishment, we ate half of what sat on our plates but more just sucked down the iced drinks we'd ordered. Our waitress rushed over to eagerly ask if we liked our meal and if we needed anything else. Looking over our half eaten dinners, we smiled to thank her for the recommendation of the thai iced tea and coffee - they'd been delicious. And pretty much, the heart of our dinner.

We had lunch here on Sunday and the restaurant has great service along with fresh food.
I had the Pad See Ew (my favorite) and the vegetables and Shrimp were outstanding.   Only problem was that I asked for it to be spicy and they just put the crushed Chili Pepper on the side of the plate.
I am going to try this place again for dinner to try something else.   All in all, this place was very good and I would recommend.

I had a gift certificate to use here so I decided to hit it up.  My date and I decided to get soups. So, I got this great coconut milk soup with chicken.  It had the most amazing flavor that I had EVER tasted.  He had a wonton soup--very plain.  We had the sukhothai platter to share between us, and everything on it was great.  I love their spring/shrimp rolls.  Finally our meals came.  The pad thai he had was alright, my Panang curry was out of this world!  It had great flavor, and I go back every once in a while for a take out of it.  For desert we had fried bananas with red bean ice cream.  The ice cream was alright--the bananas were eh.  The meal with 2 drinks was $65.

This place has a lot of customers all the time, they have the stereotypical Thai dishes (Pad thai, green curry, red curry, panang curry)and they do have a good list of wines. It's a medium sized place, with friendly peopleand the food is pretty good. There aren't many Thai restaurants around this area and i find this to be a good spot, once you have eaten some of the delicious Thai food you can order their yummy desserts or walk up to the streets to a good cafe.Sukhothai will make you happy, irrespective of the language ou know/speak . :)

I really wish I could give a two and a half, but only full stars allowed. I had such high hopes for Sukhothai, I really love Thai food and want to find a good spot in the area.

To start, we walked in and were told it was a 10min wait, no problem we took a seat at the 6 person bar and looked over their wine and beers. First problem, no one ever served us, we sat at the bar for ten minutes and were not once offered a drink. Like I said before the bar is tiny (only 6 people long) and the place was far from crowded.

Dinner, the food was good.  I had the twice cooked beef with the papaya salad. Loved the beef and the salad was great. Also tried one of the Thai beers(Singha) and really enjoyed it. I also liked the atmosphere. Exposed brick wall and open pipes. I know others have complained but I feel it fits well into the area.

So with good food and a nice environment, what the problem--THE SERVICE IS HORRIBLE!! We only saw our waitress twice, once to take our order and once to give us our bill. Never asked if we wanted another round of drinks, never checked to see how the food was and never came with the bill. We practically had to flag her down before she wandered over. I really like the area and I really want to recommend this place but the service was so terrible, it hurt the whole experience.
If you want real Thai food, try Thai palace, but if you want more of a social scene, then stay here.

I lived in Beacon for a while and frequented Sukothai often.  It's definitely worth visiting.  I found the food very good but of course Thai food has tons of sugar so be warned.  They are closed on Monday and I think that it's not the healthiest place to eat either.  However, if you're not concerned about your sugar intake please visit this place because the food is pretty darn good.  The ambiance  is ok with a large open room with no feelings of personal intimacy .  The food makes up for it of course....yum.....

I only order takeout here when I'm desperate and I'm starving. I've had pad thai in central Illinois that is way better than Sukhothai's. The dish lacks flavor. I get the pineapple fried rice because it tastes better, but it still isn't that satisfying.

As far as Thai restaurants in lower Dutchess County are concerned, this is probably your safest bet... which is unfortunate. I've eaten here 5 times - twice in-house, and three times taking out. Maybe there's some intense static on their phone line, because they consistently mess up my takeout orders. This wouldn't be a big deal if they gave me a Green Curry instead of Red Curry - but when you're a vegetarian ordering tofu with the specific instruction of "NO MEAT", and you're sent a steaming pile of chicken,  it's going to put a damper on things.

The dining experience at the restaurant more likely ensures an accurate food order, but any ambiance is pretty much non-existent. As far as deliciousness is concerned - the food here isn't awful, but it's far from the yummiest Thai I've ever had. Oh, and it's BYOB, so keep that in mind. The closest place to buy booze is more than a few blocks away.

Unless you're really jonesing for some semblance of authentic Thai food that doesn't involve buying and cooking your own ingredients, I'd pass on this place.

This is a nice addition to downtown Beacon and one of the better Thai restaurants in the Hudson Valley.  Unfortunately though, there is a lot of room for improvement in the food.  The curries were bland and the other dishes weren't as spiced up as I am used to with other Thai restaurants.  The prices tend to be on the expensive side too, for what you get.  If you are in the area, then it might be one of your only options for respectable Thai food.

Thankfully among this in-the-midst-of-continuous-development Main Street of Beacon, NY, a terrific Thai restaurant has been one of the more senior residents.

According to their website, the existing building has been here since 1818---and if you look at the condemned factory across the street alongside the river, it's not hard to believe that once-upon-a-Beacon, a thriving manufacturing or textile mill once churned out made in the USA goods.

But fast forwarding to present day, Sudkhothai presents made-in-Thailand tastes which are, thankfully for us gourmandziers, made in Beacon.

To really get at the "Thai-ness" of any restaurant, one need only apply the pad thai test.  The pad thai here (less than $12)is a conservative creation whose textures aren't buried under sugar-packed sauces or other similarly deceiving culinary acrobatics.   It's the real deal, subtle on the taste as a good pad thai should be.    I paired this experience with a Thai iced coffee, which comes in jumbo size.

The tom kha gai soup ($4) is really terrific---as with the pad thai, the "coconut" of the coconut soup isn't overpowering.  It has the spice kick that's expected but again, in just the right amount unlike other Thai spots which will over-spice the soup to hide a weak coconut base.   The soup was also brimming with fresh n' tasty vegetables--the mushrooms, red peppers, and green peppers were so fresh you could still hear the chef's knife hitting the cutting board.

While a mangos and sticky rice are missing (perhaps due to the fruit seasons) from this self-touted traditional style restaurant, the offering of the evening, banana and sticky rice, sounded like a good thing to try for my next visit.

As an added bonus, to walk off your post-dinner satisfaction, Beacon itself has a nice gathering of art galleries and quaint cafes within walking distance of Sukhothai.

Service is friendly, but as previously Yelped, a bit on the slow side (perhaps also a tradition and/or side effect of a home cooked Thai feast).   Even at roughly 15% capacity on a not-so-busy evening, timeliness of the service can be slow.   So don't come if you're in a rush (who rushes through a tasty Thai-feast, anyway?), instead, explore the traditional fare, chew your food, smile broadly

Most importantly, Sukothai holds to the most important tenet of any dining experience, traditional or not: a pleasant and satisfying meal.

Overall food is very very good. Recommended.

Love: Must-try dish - 4 curry sampler (from specials - weeknights only)
red curry, panang, massaman and green curry with rice. Good for 2 ppl and its just awesome.  Plenty to take home after you done as well. Perfect with thai iced tea. Also EGG PLANT PAD PED - from specials too.  Very good!

Don't like: service is polite and nice, although if they are getting busy - they are not handling it too good and you can't get a very good service when 1 or 2 waitresses are running between all tables. Some of your requests may be (rarely but..) forgotten in a rush.  Also was never really impressed with their Chef salad. (dressing is very good but quality of greens sometimes can be better)

Interesting/Unusual: They are offering thai cooking classes - I will try it eventually and share my opinion after that.,
