After putting it off for so long, I finally got to try Taco Casa. Â Overall, the experience was just only ok.
Taco Casa seems to be a take out only Mexican shack. Â When I was there, they had one person at the register and one person in the back making the food. Â I didn't see any grills or see any food being cooked, so when I ordered the chicken chorizo burrito, I can only assume the food came from containers like at Chipotle next door. Â Taco Casa does offer more variety than Chipotle, but I can't say the taste is any better.
The burrito I got was large and filled me up for dinner. Â It had plenty of rice and chicken and white queso. Â If you had asked me about 5 years ago, I would have probably said this is the best burrito around because of the cheese dip they put in the burrito. Â The problem with the cheese is that it overpowers all the other tastes that could exist in the burrito. Â There was so much cheese, rice, and chicken, I didn't even taste the chorizo, nor am I sure if there was any actually in there.
If you're in the area and trying to choose about going to Chiptle or Taco Casa, give Taco Casa a chance and try something new. Â It's a nice take out place but, to me, just doesn't fit well with the other Mexican restaurants around.
To me, Taco Casa is the best locally-owned restaurant chain in Cincinnati. It does get a little pricey, but seeing as how I only venture in on special occasions, it's well worth it.
The taco salads are the best bang for your buck, with fresh tomatoes, delicious ranch, lettuce, and shredded cheddar cheese on top of Taco Casa's own ground beef. The small size is enough for a meal, the large would be enough for two folks, and the party platter has made it a second day in my household, even after the friends and family indulged.
The rest of the menu is fantastic, particularly the burritos - which contain simply meat and cheese. If you are afraid of the thought of grease oozing through a tortilla, this bad boy is not for you. Outside of the plain beef & cheese burrito, I recently tried the Chicken Chorizo burrito, and it didn't disappoint.
I am partial to Norwood/Hyde Park/Oakley establishments, I will admit, but this place supersedes any geographical bias.
