A great place to come for fantastic, no frills, and fresh tasting sushi. They serve the classic maki and nigiri and not the over sauced stuff you find in lakeview. It's operated by a brother (chef) and sister (waitress). The sister is amazingly friendly and helpful. This place is also a BYOB.

I was happy to see a new sushi place open in my neighborhood so my girlfriend and I gave it a try. The prices were very fair, the location is convenient, the atmosphere was modern and clean, and most importantly the food was great! They had no take home menus at the time, but next time I try it I'll try and snap a photo of their menu to give everyone any idea of what to expect.

I had a friend in town and we were both craving sushi. I located Taketei on Yelp and couldn't help be impressed by its numerous positive reviews.

We had a party to attend on Saturday night, so we arrived for dinner at 6 pm (earlier than my usual) and the place was totally empty aside from the staff. It's a tiny place to begin with, but having the whole place to ourselves was kind of fun. The decor is sleek and modern, so it's a really cute space.

We started with the sashimi appetizer (the chef's selection of 5 fresh options). Everything tasted clean and delicious. It was a great start.

We decided to order 3 specialty rolls between the two of us. This ended up being basically the perfect amount of food for 3 people. All 3 were also very tasty. My only criticism is that the rolls were slightly loose and were falling apart when being picked up with the chopsticks. Otherwise they were deliciously complex.

I will definitely return, but I am eager to try some of their traditional rolls as I think the fish/seafood would likely be able to stand on their own without all the bells and whistles.

    Give this place a chance.

I always have craving for sushi and this is best I ever had. Go and try, also talk to the staff over there, they are friendly and know how to make you stop again and again.

After going here again probably 6 times or more, and getting to know the fantastic owner/operators of this place, I can't rate it less than 5.

Make sure to stop in when you're craving sushi.  The staff really go the extra step.

I ordered an eel avocado roll to go, it tastes great and content is abundant, everything is so fresh, especially the color of avocado, the chef made rolls with passion and arts, definitely thumb up

Taketei is a gem in the Edgewater area right by the Berwyn CTA Redline stop.  I only live 2 blocks away, so I will definitely be going back as often as possible. My first visit was on a Thursday night and I was pleasantly surprised that a sushi place this good would be so close to my apt. I was impressed by the food and overall cleanliness of the restaurant even though my expectations were super high because of all the previous 5 star reviews. The sushi was both affordable and very good as the other reviews consistently stated.  No corkage fee for BYOB is def a huge plus btw.

Here's what I ordered: 2 appetizers, 3 rolls, and a dessert for under $40 which cannot be beat.  I've eaten at all the "fancy smansy" sushi parlors in the downtown area i.e. Japonais, Sunda, RA, etc etc and this one boasts the same quality for half the price. The venue is modern, squeeky clean, and the service was excellent.  Sure other places are fancier and have super dim lighting if you're looking for that sort of thing, but if you want to keep it casual and you're in the area Taketei is a must try.

Awesome sushi. Best miso soup I've ever had. Great salad. Friendly staff.

Florescent lighting is a little jarring, it is not a good place for a first date.

Great place to casually meet a friend and BYOB. Great prices.

    Go!

When I went to visit my cousin up town we wanted to eat some sushi. He told me about this new place that opened couple of months ago  located very close to red line station. It a small place with a nice looks, is very clean and have a great service you can tell its family run business that's  what are we missing so much lately. People who care.
We ordered some sushi rolls and it was delicious. The Fish was really fresh and Miso soup was really tasty. I would like to comment the chef on the way he puts the rolls on the plate,  great artistic taste!!!

Over all great experience price is reasonable I think  these people will need a bigger place soon.

Delightful gem! Have been here several times and the sushi quality is consistently excellent. The chef (owner) and his sister are wonderful. It is BYOB and the menu is reasonably priced. EXCELLENT addition to the neighborhood.

I went here with my husband and we ordered Sushi A and Sushi B combos and shared.  Delicious!

When we walked in from the freezing cold, we were greeted with warm smiles from the hostess and chef.  There are four small tables for two, I sat on the bench side which has a cute little pillow.  The decor is clean, simple, bright, and warm.

The miso soup was probably the best I've had, it came with the combo.  I also had green tea.  I was given a whole teapot, a white ceramic one with a lovely bamboo handle, pretty!  My husband brought some beer  for himself :)

    I highly recommend it.

The sushi is stellar, the decor is bamboo-awesome, and the staff are loverly.  This place has been open about 8 weeks.  The spicy salmon deluxe and sashimi appetizer were phenomenal.

Taketei opened a couple of months back and Ive been in two times. The food is outstanding, great service and a very clean place. It's a place you'd expect in Andersonville on Clark, but tucked in Edgewater!

They also do corporate and party catering. Definitely check it out.

This great new addition to the neighborhood pays careful attention to the details. The Chef's sashimi special was very fresh and artistically prepared. The interior is intimate and quiet. Even the mochi was served with fresh fruit and carved oragami-like fruit skins. It is BYOB so next tme we will bring some sake.

This is the best sushi in Chicago. I know this sounds like hyperbole, but it is true. Even better than Ora, which is also excellent. You have to go. So so so good.

I just moved moved here from California and thus far have been fairly disappointed by Chicago's sushi options. Until now. My Taketei Sushi experience was phenomenal. Everything was delicious and reasonably priced. I ordered the edamame appetizer (they give a large quantity and it is perfectly salted), the Dragon Roll (the perfect combination of taste and texture, it was evident every ingredient was very fresh), and the Spicy California Roll (for a simple, introductory roll, all I can say is wow! Just wow!).

The service is also exceptional. Taketei deserves the neighborhood's attention, they offer the best in return.

I fear that this new little restaurant's fresh, delicious, very reasonably priced sushi will struggle to be noticed due to the place's location, which is too bad--because the food really is great and worth every penny. We will definitely be back soon.

Taketai is simply, but tastefully decorated; it's clean and well-lit and inviting.

We ordered several basic sushi items and were pleased and impressed by all of them. The sashimi appetizer contained a couple pieces each of salmon, tuna, super-white tuna, and red snapper, and all were very fresh. 10 pieces of sashimi for $10 or $11 (I can't remember exactly) is quite a steal. We also got a negi tuna roll (tuna and scallions), a spicy salmon deluxe roll (spicy salmon with avocado and cucumbers), and a spicy scallop roll. All were delicious, with decent sized pieces of fish and all well-seasoned.

Having been here, I really want it to succeed. Give it a try!

We live in the area, and were walking to dinner at a different restaurant. When we saw a new place opened just around the corner we stopped in. I am so glad we did! The staff was wonderful! BYOB! Well priced and some of the best sushi I have had in a long time!

I had the opportunity to dine for the first time in TAKETAI, our new neighborhood sushi restaurant.

The decor and ambience is one of clean lines and stark elegance.

The food is excellent, the fish is ostensibly fresh and full of flavor, the seasoning striking a prefect balance with the natural flavor of the raw ingredients. The miso soup has the most understated yet profound and lingering flavor for this particular dish in recent memory.

Food and ambience both strike a pose of elegance and strength.

At the moment, the establishment does not accept CCs, but - according to the super nice owner - will remedy this oversight within a few days.

I am looking forward to returning soon.

I stopped by this small, clean space with two friends Saturday night, and was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was.  The restaurant has only been open a few days and doesn't even have a sign up yet, but it's worth a visit.  The tuna was fresh and buttery in consistency - very delicious.  I usually eat maki, but had the tuna and the unagi sushi this first time to gauge the quality of the fish that I most commonly eat.  It was top-notch.  We also had several rolls which were equally good.  There wasn't anything we tried that wasn't delicious. The prices are about middle of the road for sushi.   The storefront is simply decorated with bamboo trim and is very tidy with a few tables.   The menu is fairly simple, and they seem to be focusing on sushi and rolls and some other cold items.  The location a few steps from the Berwyn Red Line stop is very convenient.  I hope to make many repeat visits.
