Came here on a rainy day during Winter Dine LA for the prime rib dinner. I think the average age of the diners for Sunday dinner was about 50. This isn't your typical Dine LA foodie crowd, there were alot of families having Sunday dinner or folks just stopping by for their usual casual dinner.
If you're looking to try prime rib in a more casual tavern setting instead of the usual Lawrys, definitely give this place a try. The prime rib was solid and served with creamed spinach, mashed potatoes, and Yorkshire pudding.
Dessert is a hot fudge sundae where hot fudge is served tableside with fresh whipped cream. Remember that big spinning salad show they do at Lawrys with the dressing? Well they do that with the hot fudge into your sundae.
Service was super pleasant and our waiter graced us with stories of how Walt Disney used to eat here when the studios were nearby.
I would definitely return.
Haven't been here in a while. Apparently, we have been destroyed by eating at too many trendy restaurants with those damn "small plates". Seriously restaurants, fuck those small plates already. I get it... get a range of superb ingredients and try many. But c'mon!
Hung out at the bar. Ordered a french fries with cheese fondue and prime rib "appetizer" for $10. It was HUGE and could have easily fed our entire table. PBR is like three bucks and I was expecting the usual $12 for a glass of wine, but it was only $7 - AND it was a great wine.
Everyone has already written enough about this spot, so I'll just leave it at that. Get your money's worth for a meal. Seriously.
After a Dodger game we called at 7:00pm and they had a table ready at 7:15 on a Saturday night. That was a great start to the experience and it only got better from there. I had the prime rib and my girlfriend had the beef stroganoff. We were more than pleased with our meals and I'm glad to say I quenched my prime rib and Yorkshire pudding craving!
Every employee was extremely friendly and I dig the old school manor house ambiance. The host informed our waitress that is was our first time there so they gave us a dessert sampling on the house. That was a classy touch from a classy restaurant. We will surely be going back. Cheers
Hadn't been here since I was little and just checked it out again this weekend. Man they serve some hearty good food. They need to have a menu for half orders at half the price though for people like me! So much food aghh. I got the Toad in a Hole and tried the marinated olives as an appetizer and couldn't get enough of either. Well that was until my stomach almost exploded from the sheer amount of meat and yorkshire pudding on my plate.
Review Source:How did I forget to review Tam O'shanter! I've been here a few times. Once for a yelp event and another for st patty's day celebration. This is probably the spot to go to for st patty's day. They always build a tent to go over the parking lot where they have live music and food and GREEN BEER.. yep. It was kind of a weird system because some places such as the bar inside did not accept the "vouchers" that they made us buy. Each voucher was $8 which can get you a beer or a sandwich.. I thought it was quite pricey but it was st patty's day so they can charger whatever they want. When we bought the vouchers we decided to go inside to the bar there where we found a booth, and the bar inside did not accept their vouchers from outside... what a fail! anyways, i also had their corn beef sandwich that day and I thought it was pretty good, it wasn't superb but it got the job done.
Review Source:We have been to this now historic location many times over the years, and the ambiance and service continues to deliver, however the meals have taken a bit of a dive to pretty average in quality and pretty overpriced for what you get. Â A recent mid week visit in early summer, early in the evening was swarming with greeters and servers, and our of course costumed serving lass was attentive and pleasant. Â Although the beer selection is varied, they were out of a couple of them, and the recommended wine was just ok, and the stingiest pour for the price that I have seen in quite awhile. Â More like a wine tasting. Â They were out of corned beef ( and this was at the beginning of the dinner hour) and the pork chop dinner was described by our companion as rather dry and meh. Â Other orders of the fish and chips ( good but not memorable) and the California cut prime rib , at $30 was a tender and prepared as ordered , but accompaniments of mashed potatoes/ gravy and yorkshire pudding were just bland. Â To enjoy the atmosphere and LA period kitsch, better to come at lunchtime so as not go get so soaked by the prices
Review Source:I have been dining at the Tam for thirty years, since the bar was up against the back wall. I survived the Tam - Great Scott - Tam transition and enjoyed the food and service at both lunch and dinner. Â We stopped by for lunch in the bar and enjoyed the pub menu. Â I ordered a freshly carved roast beef on rye bread with a pint of Harp Lager. Â The meat was perfectly done, tender and juicy. Â I had a side of potato salad and ate like a starving man. Â Tam just hits the spot. Â The service is attentive but not invasive. Â The barmen here are solid pros. Â As a young man, I used to come in here and order half-yards of ale! Â Nowadays my consumption is more measured, but my enjoyment remains the same. Â A great stop for buisness or pleasure dining. Â Solid, traditional, satisfying.
Review Source:Wow.  Was invited to this place by a good friend of a good friend of mine to celebrate his 60th birthday.  I've heard of this place and it was on my "to do" list for quite a while, so we were pretty excited to gorge our gullets with some tasty meat.  I checked out the website to find out that they are part of the Lawry's chain of fine restaurants.  Turns out that Tam O' is one of the oldest restaurants in LA and was the brainchild of of  Lawrence Frank (Lawry's) and William Van de Kamp (VDK Bakeries).
From what I experienced, all of the staff is as friendly and courteous as the best restaurants in the country. Â From our host, to our sommelier, to our waiter. Â We arrived in three cars and the host wanted the entire party to be present before we were seated. Â Not sure why restaurants do that, but whatever. Â As you walk through the restaurant you'll notice that all the staff are dressed in Scottish attire although I don't remember any kilts? Â The girls, err ladies, are all corseted up wearing tartan skirts. Â As George Takei would say, "Oh my!"
Of course, I brought a bottle of wine to open on this special occasion. Â I called early and got the scoop on the very fair corkage fee....$15, however if you buy a bottle they'll waive that fee. Â Pretty sweet deal IMO. Â The sommelier came over and decanted it into beautiful decanter with all the pomp and circumstance that a '97 Insignia should be treated with. Â We also ordered a nice Pinot Noir to begin the meal with. Â They also served each wine in it's own clean and proper glass. Â Bonus points for that!
We all scanned through the menu, however most of us ordered one style of cut of the Prime Rib or another. Â I chose the largest one (duh) without the bone as I just didn't want to gnaw on a bone in front of all these nice people. Â For an app, we ordered the charcuterie platter which is a selection of elegant cheeses, cured meats and crackers. Â All of the items on this wooden plank was super rich and yummy!
The meal arrived and they served up the bloody red meat on decent size plates which included our sides that come with the meal. Â The meat was cooked (medium rare) and cut perfectly to order. Â Nicely seasoned and it couldn't have been any more tender. Â Maybe that's why they gave us what appeared to be butter knives as our steak utensil. Â I could have probably used my fork to cut it. Â The prime rib was excellent! Â The creamed spinach and Yorkshire pudding (my sides) were also fantastic ... and I don't like creamed anything!
During dinner, the waiter and busboy were as attentive to our table as they could be. Â The sommelier dropped by every once in a while to refill the wine glasses. Â The busboy and waiter came by to fill our water glasses and to take away the empty plates and boy were they empty! Â :) Â Haste Ye Back!
Tam O'Shanter offers up a great cut of prime rib and a great slice of LA history.
My husband and I had our date night here last weekend and we really enjoyed ourselves. Â We both ordered prime rib -- it is definitely as good as Lawry's, and Tam is a hundred times easier for us Eastsiders to get to. I loved the Tam Caesar with mint -- an interesting, fresh flavor combination. Â We both were satisfied with the beer selection, with some local breweries represented. Â It's good to see the old warhorses like Tam keep up with the times.
I think the atmosphere is just delicious but it will definitely be too old school for some, too cutesy for others. Â The restaurant is meant to evoke an old Scottish pub, with Tudor architecture, enormous fireplaces, paintings of dogs and a ton of tartan. Â There's nothing modern or hip about it, but there's nothing wrong with that.
I really enjoyed seeing the old pictures of Tam through the years -- theres a great illustration from Walt Disney you'll want to look out for -- and, yes, we had a few minutes to look around when we got in ten minutes before our reservation. Â We were seated on time and not before. Â
Parking is all valet ($3.50) although finding street parking in the neighborhood probably would not be too much of a chore.
Great place. I took my parent's here when they came to visit. The service and the food were both excellent. I wish they had a few more vegetarian and fish entrees to choose from though like the other Lawry's restaurants. All-in-all I would definitely recommend this to any carnivore's out there but if you are a pescatarian, don't fret, the best fish and chips I've had in LA, just be prepared to spend. :)
Review Source:Great food, great service from servers. Â Both can't be overstated, but what really bothered us was the hostesses attitude as we left, and here's why:
1. Â I heard her make the appointment over the phone. Â I was sitting next to her when she made it. Â I also heard 6pm but apparently, it was changed to accommodate someone other group. Â
2. Â What is in a name...getting it wrong over the phone, even when it was spelled for you twice is one thing. Â When corrected in person, and you still have it very wrong and mispronounce the hell out of it, that's bad.
3. Â The look we got, after we were so gracious to their mistakes, really put a final touch to the whole experience...it was a reverse compliment sandwich. Â
Good steakhouses are rare but that doesn't justify arrogance by the host staff. Â I'll be back
Great Food! Â The Carver sandwiches are what I dream of. Â No need to go past the barroom. Â Sit down. Â Let one of the bartenders make you a proper Moscow Mule. Â Go to the carving station and get a sandwich. Â
Probably one of the top 5 sandwiches in the city. Â I love the Brisket. Â It is heavenly. Â But don't count out the Turkey, Pork or Roast Beef. Â They are all terrific. Â
Don't forget the chips. Â They've been making homemade potato chips for as long as I've been going, and they might be the best you've ever had. Â So good, it's hard to stop at just one bag! Â There is also the fixings bar where you can have your fill of potato salad and cole slaw. Â Cole slaw with peanuts. Â Very good Cole Slaw. Â
There are also some great beers they rotate on tap. Â Always a couple good craft brews and some from the UK. Â
There are some TVs as well, and you can catch up on some baseball or football while you eat and drink.
Pleasantly surprised! We here in Los Angeles have an unfairly negative stigma of all things "traditional" but places like Tam-o'-Shanter remind us to keep that inclination in check.
Having been here for 90 years, it's to be expected that this place has everything dialed. From the valet to the check presentation the service was spot on. Â Always present, but never rushed.
The fare, whilst a bit expensive, was all tasty and high-quality. It was apparent the recipes & preparation have been tweaked over the years and at the end of the day, you get what you pay for.
The highlight of the experience was definitely the Ale & Sandwich bar. Most of us attribute prime rib carving stations to cheap Vegas buffets but the entire set up and presentation here was understated and methodical with an emphasis on the process and tradition of it all.
We'll definitely be back for more.
LOVE THIS PLACE. It hasn't changed in over 15 years and I LOVE THAT!
Came in for lunch on a Thursday. My friend and I both wanted Prime Rib so we ordered, got our sides and sat down. Server was there right as we sat down to take our drink order and see if we wanted any bread or anything off the menu.
Weekday lunch is very different from the weekend and Dinner time. It is much more casual.
And self parking in the lot. Dinner and weekends is valet.
Delicious, efficient, atmospheric, authentic, kind-but-focused, and did I mention delicious???
Wine seemed pricey considering all the money you'll definitely spend on food, but WOW to everything in general. Â the chocolate souffle worked out well...but the real #1 was the Toad in a hole.
Oh yes, this is a spot for the ages. If you like good drink, an environment steeped in old Los Angeles and a very tender brisket sandwich, well you're in luck boy-o. The Tam is ready and waiting to please.
Great environment and people, great food, it's really no wonder this spot has been around for nearly a 100 years. And it's also incredible how many people I mention it to say they know it. I have to make it known that the staff are the friendliest I've seen this side of Cork. Everyone is so happy to help, it's great.
Also, ask to speak to the Executive Chef when you're there. When he comes out just look up and smile, say hi and go back to your meal. He loves it, promise.
A great prime rib place in Atwater Village - the place has been around about 90 years, and it's very rustic inside. It's run by the company that also runs Lawry's the Prime Rib, so that's the thing to get here - with mashed potatoes, and a choice of creamed corn or spinach. A small yorkshire pudding comes with it. The service was great. The only snafu I thought was the lobster tail - a tiny, overcooked one, already split in half. I've seen shrimp bigger than this lobster tail...otherwise, a great meal!
Friends at the table had the fish and chips and the toad in the hole - all tasty. Â
Finish the delicious meal off with an ice cream sundae with CC Browns Hot Fudge, so good!
I know most people of a certain age group easily dismiss Tam because it looks a little drab from the outside (because I'm pretty sure it still has the same exterior as when it first opened 90 years ago), and there sure are a whole lot of silver haired gents and lasses that slowly make their way in to the establishment, but don't be fooled by the over 60 crowd, Tam's got an Ale and Sandwich Bar that's appropriately catered to the younger set who like to eat way after Jeopardy airs.
They're open a wee bit later than the restaurant, which is perfect for a late-night bite and a beer to wash it down. Speaking of beer, they've got a dynamite selection of craft beers to choose from and the proper glassware to serve said suds in. The carving station is the best bet (especially if you come late, even though the kitchen is still open, they kind of scoff at ordering anything on the kitchen menu, even if your eyes widen at the thought of having pot pie!) and with it, you can dress up your brisket or turkey with all the fixins (mainly coleslaw). The turkey option boasts a brick-looking amount of turkey, which is not a bad thing, but can make the sandwich a bit hard to eat if you don't moisten it up with mustard or coleslaw (and overcompensate for the amount of turkey), while the brisket is a no-brainer and go with the brioche bun. Done and done.
Ale and Sandwich Bar is open from 11am-midnight (kitchen until 11pm).
Heading down to the Tam O'Shanter in Los Felix is one of my little favorites in the city. Â When I feel like prime rib this is my go to the best place. Â I was first brought here as a child and have kept on coming back for years and years. Â The complete dinner comes with delicious side mashed potatoes and salad. Â The quality of the prime rib is one of the tastiest I've ever had. Â
I also like the atmosphere here. Â The lighting is serene and makes you instantly relax. Â I always have good experiences with the servers too. Â This place is really one of the best in town for prime rib.

I really like this place. But, to be honest I have never actually sat in the restaurant. We always sit in the pub. You can still get the whole menu or you can order from the pub menu. There is a carving station in the pub, so you aren't missing anything. Great vibe and live music (and sometimes traditional dancing) on Saturday nights. Good times, even though I don't dance and just watch the madness! Food is great! And...last but not least, they have Coors Banquet Beer in a bottle. Perfect.
she said....coming soon!
Took the boo thang here for his birthday dinner. Deeeee-licious! I like that it's not in the middle of all the hustle bustle traffic of La Cienega--even with valet, it gets too crazy crowded out there. Another plus is that it's the original Lawry's..so there's definitely some history & character here.
We had reservations, so seating happened rather quickly. I made a note to have us seated by the fireplace, and they they did so w/o a problem. Everyone seemed to be buzzing by, as it was a busy Saturday night, but our waiter was really friendly, and took his time to welcome us, and tell us the specials for the night. I'm not big on over-the-top in your face servers..so this was perfect. He was curt and polite, and then left us alone.
We both ordered prime rib. I'm not usually a fan of huge slabs of meat...but if I'm going to be eating any--it'll be prime rib. He got the Tam O'Shanter cut, and I opted for the smaller California cut. We both got it w/ creamed corn, mashed potatoes, and Yorkshire pudding. Meat was perfectly cooked, I give it a solid 10. Corn was...underwhelming. Nothing to write home about...which was a bummer, because I LOVE corn, and I LOVE Lawry's corn. Maybe it was an off night? Mashed potatoes, well, you can't really mess that up. Yorkshire pudding was ok. He ate all of his...I still had some of mine left.
I mean, the place is known for prime rib...and it totally gets 5 stars from me for that. I can't justify taking away a star just bc of the so-so corn. Service was excellent. Our server brought him a little strawberry shortcake topped with a candle, and left out the singing (thank god). All in all, it was a wonderul dinner. We're definitely going back..and I'll give the creamed corn a 2nd chance. Don't fail me twice!
This review is for the St. Patty's Day celebration!
Crazy crowded. Tons of people. We bought tickets at the tents outside and had no idea that it was only valid outside to get beer and food. Our first round we ended up just going inside to the bar even though we had tickets for outside. Terrible bar service. I stood there for a really long time...giving the eye..still no beer! Â Instead another member of our group, who is much taller, got the their attention within a minute she stood there. UGH! They charged my friend double for one round of beers..make sure you check your bank accounts to make sure it was only swiped once. Oh well...yay for getting the festive green beer! I was extremely disappointed at how expensive an irish car bomb was... 16 bucks?! really? They had loud entertainment which seemed to keep everyone outside occupied. If you want low key, just hop inside.
We got really lucky to get a booth inside and it was a nice chill celebration with catching up and watching the laker game. I got to try the corn beef sandwich with potatoes and carrots. Excellent sandwich. The corn beef was moist, tender, and flavorful, definitely FOUR STARS. Bomb. Perfect for the celebration!
Tam O'shanter is extremely small, well from what I saw ...not much space at all. I'd say excellent celebration, expensive booze, good food. Call it a day!
-Give it a try!
p.s.: I had a great time with my party but I was really turned off by the slow bar tending at the bar.
P.s.s. Try to carry cash!
Love this place. Came on Robert Burns' birthday. We ordered the Tam O' Shanter salad which was almost too citrusy but delectable nonetheless. Â We also ordered The California & the Toad in the Hole. They were both tasty! My only warning is for people who dont like excess fat- The California is almost all fat.
(Music changes) Then we made the best decision of our lives- we ordered the Sticky toffee cake.. I won't even elaborate: just try it. If you don't like it message me and ill treat you for another dessert. Not really.. but take my word and who knows- maybe you'll find five dollars tomorrow.
Thank goodness for Robert Burns.. We got a free show from an awesome bagpipe woman and a performer who cracked up the whole place with his poems. Â I love Scottish people.
Love the history of this place... love knowing that we're eating in pretty much the same place and in the same way that old Walt Disney ate at way back when. Â
Prime rib is king here and they know how to do it right. Â Their au-jus is a bit thicker and more flavored than Lawry's and I prefer it this way. Â
Only wish that their kitchen stayed open later than 9pm.
We recently visited the Tam for an anniversary dinner and had a really nice time. Without creating a virtual Wiki history page here, let's just sum it up that this place has for decades, played host to Hollywood's elite, most notably for us, Walt Disney and his crew of animators from back in the day, known as "The Nine Old Men". It's well documented that this was a favorite watering hole for the Mouse House. The restaurant proudly flaunts this history, and when we arrived, noted a Mickey Mouse that had been drawn on a dry erase board listing some of the restaurant's specials. Very quaint and cool.
We'd called in advance and reserved Walt Disney's favorite table for the occasion, which gave it a very geeky cool vibe during dinner. The staff was very gracious and held the table open for us no problem. That was awesome, and they know exactly what you mean when you call and ask if you can reserve Walt Disney's table; don't be afraid to try!
The Tam is known for its prime rib as well as its made-to-order chocolate souffle, which we had, naturally. The prime rib was a very nice portion and cooked perfectly for each of us. The meal also came with Yorkshire pudding, which my girlfriend liked; me, not so much. Not a fan of the taste, so I had a bite or two and set the rest aside on my plate. We did order a chocolate souffle, which I was also not a fan of; again, my girlfriend enjoyed it, so that's cool. In addition, the staff also brought us a bit extra for dessert due to it being our anniversary, which I thought was a very nice touch, and unexpected. Points for that.
One of the things we wanted to do after dinner was poke around and admire the decorum, which our waitress invited us to do. This is where the evening hit a snag; I wanted to see a couple Disney animator artifacts that I had read about such as drawings and a photo of the Disney crew the last time they were all there together as a group. I was a personal friend of Marc and remain so with Alice Davis (Google is your friend if you don't know who they are/were), so it was something I really wanted to see. These requests stumped our server, as well as the rest of the staff that was on. After awkwardly waiting for the staff to ask each other and all respond that they were sorry, but the one manager that would know wasn't there, I felt a bit surprised by this.
Don't state that you have a proud history with Disney, etc. if your crew can't even be trained to know where art or pictures are in the place where they work day in and out. It shouldn't be the responsibility of one person; if you state that you have a proud heritage and flaunt it, please take the time to train the staff with some basics so they don't look stupid when a guest knows more than they do or stumps them with simple questions. I'm not saying the Tam should employ Disney or old school Hollywood experts - but if you're gonna play up to that heritage, it would be nice to have at least a few people on hand with their head in the game.
We'll likely be back, because the Tam is nice and the staff was very gracious, regardless of their lack of knowledge regarding the decorum or history of the restaurant. It's cool to have this treasure in our area; I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
My girlfriend and I stopped by this place without a reservation on Saturday night.
We sat over by the bar and she had express to me how great the corn beef sandwich's are, so that is what we both had, she had hers on rye bread and I had mine on a onion roll, we both had potato salad and we each had a side of cream spinage. The sandwiches were very tasty.
We usually have reservations and eat in the main dining room area and order the crusted halibut or salmon diner.
This place is great for a romantic dinner or a birthday or a promotion.
Plan to spend some money here...
Our two sandwiches with a side and one beer and one soda was $50.03
Usually we spend over $150.00
Really, really great place. Nostalgic. Can't believe it's been in Los Angeles since the '20s. Since I'm a big theme park nerd, I appreciate the rich history it has with Walt Disney. He used to come here and enjoy drinks and food with the Nine Old Men (original Disney animators). There are a few photos of them sparlwed around the restaurant - this is a must-see for all Disney fans.
I've been coming here for years. They're known for their prime rib, so stick with that. Also, don't forget to order their chocolate souffle! It must be ordered in advance because it's made fresh, and it is SO yummy! My other half wasn't too fond of it because it wasn't sweet enough, but since I'm Asian, I love that not too sweet shit.
Great decor. Those poor waiters look like they're straight from Fantastyland. But damn, they rock it. Because service was AWESOME for us.
This is mostly a special occasion restaurant for us, but will come back to eat at the bar for their cheap prime rib sandwiches!
Been hearing about this place for a few months and decided to come here for DineLA. Tam O'Shanter is owned by the same owners of Lawry's in Beverly Hills. There are some slight differences between the two restaurants. Tam O'Shanter is more casual and relaxing. Â The place has a bar and also a live band playing music throughout the night. Â Lawry's on the other hand is more formal, romantic, and more suitable for a date. Besides that, the menus are similar, however, Tam has a few more options than Lawry's.
I ordered from the DineLA menu. I started off with the house salad. Salad came with a few croutons, cheese, and dressing. (Portion was enormous) For my entrée I ordered the prime rib. I asked for medium rare, but they overcooked it by a bit. The prime rib was still tender and juicy. The prime rib from Lawry's is still a notch up compared to Tam's.  The meal also came with either creamed corn or spinach. I'm a huge creamed corn fan so I opted for the corn. The corn is sweet and comparable with Lawry's creamed corn. *MELTS IN YOUR MOUTH!* The Yorkshire pudding was the last side that came with the meal. The pudding was probably the best part of the meal! By the time I finished my entrée and sides, I was stuffed, but there was still dessert! I ordered the hot fudge sundae to finish off my meal. There was nothing special about the sundae at all; vanilla ice cream with some hot fudge.
Overall, it was a good experience. It's tough to compare this place to Lawry's since the two are intended for different occasion. (Lawry's more formal and O'Shanter more homey and casual) The waiter was attentive and answered any questions we asked him. He also gave us several recommendations on what to order in the future. Â The food is decent, but it is a level down from Lawry's. This place is cheaper than Lawry's, so I guess you get what you pay for. If you enjoy prime rib, but prefer to be in a more casual environment, then this is the place to be! Â I probably would not come back again, but if you are nearby, I would definitely check this place out!
Overall good food, in an interesting spot. Â Decorations look like they haven't changed for the past 50 years... or more. Â Looks like all they have to do is dust, and change light bulbs periodically...
While an LA landmark, not a place that I'd take a date... Think I'd rather go for a more traditional steak house. Â Maybe it'd be more fun if I've been coming here since childhood, but that's not the case... That being said, servers were all friendly and helpful, and again food was surprisingly good. Â :)
Plenty of parking in the neighborhood if you're up for walking just a couple of minutes.
I've recently discovered Atwater Village and cannot get enough! Â I stumbled upon The Tam O'Shanter and have never been happier! Â It's a fantastic place - filled with memorabilia and the most incredible vibe. Â If only those walls could talk. Â The staff there is extremely knowledgeable and told wonderful stories. Â The food was delicious and hearty and the drinks were authentic and served to perfection. Â
Most importantly, though, was the feel of the place. Â They are true to their historic roots but bring in trendy and fun events too. Â For instance - if you update your status and tag them tonight (NYE) after 8pm you get happy hour prices all night long!
I also heard a rumor they invented valet parking. Â Genius.
The BF and I were actually on our way to Little Tokyo but traffic was insane! We had been battling traffic for close to an hour, our starting point was Burbank and we only made it Atwater Village by way of side streets in that time. My stomach and temper were desperately shouting at me and the BF was on pins and needles... he knows how I get... lol.
Anyway, I recently went to Tam O'Shanter for the first time during a Yelp Elite Event and remembered how impressed I was. It was my duty as navigator to call it quits on our initial destination and settle on Tam O'Shanter as our next stop - the BF happily agreed.
The place was pretty busy, no surprise as a lot of patrons were getting together for the holidays and it was a Friday night! Luckily we snagged a booth in the bar, score!
Carlisle was our server and provided excellent service. He did forget to bring out a side of gravy but it's okay, poor guy was slammed and we could tell he was doing his best.
We ordered:
French onion soup, big enough to share between 2 people. It had a lot of flavor and was served at a nice hot temperature.
Tam O'Shanter cut med-rare, we shared this between the two of us and each got a lobster tail. It was more than enough food!! I got mine with cream corn and spinach while the BF got cream corn and mashed potatoes. Next time, I'll skip the spinach and get double corn or a side of potatoes. The Yorkshire pudding was good too, especially when you sop it up with gravy!!
We ended our meal with an order of chocolate souffle. Good god, this thing was massive!! It came with a side of cream and it was really rich.. we were only able to take a few bites before raising the white flag.
It's definitely a place to indulge while feeling comfortable and cozy, you could probably fall asleep for a few minutes before realizing it! The decor and ambiance of the place is really amazing, a nice cherry on top for the history buffs as well as they have a lot of memorabilia of the establishment circa 1920's I believe. I know the BF took a good ten minutes to peruse all the articles and photos.
I'm happy to have discovered Tam O'Shanter after so many years of seeing it and wondering about it. I especially like the fact that I can come here rather than make the drive down to Beverly Hills. To be honest, I prefer this venue itself over Lawry's.... there's just something nostalgic about it that gives you that warm fuzzy feeling. Great spot, especially during the holidays!
I came here for a Yelp event and it was an amazing experience. I liked everything about this place--the food/drinks, the decor, and the service. The Scottish beer they have on tap here is on point.
I wouldn't mind coming back here if I'm ever in the area again. I only had their prime rib so I still need to try the Yorkshire Pudding and such. The Scottish people know how to eat. This is a gem in Los Angeles that should definitely have a lot more reviews on Yelp.
This was my first time here. Â Surprising since it's been open for 90 years! Â I remember going to Lawry's as a kid because my parents loved prime rib. Â We'll have to bring our folks here next time. Â Apparently, my husband has been here plenty of times back in the day to impress girlfriends past. Â Whatever... we are here for the Elite Yelp event tonight. Â
1st stop the bar...I ordered the Stone Brewing -The Perfect Crime & my husband ordered the Alagash IPA. Â They have a nice selection of craft brews on draught. Â Our friend Marisol got us a table so we were good. Â Roast Beef Carvers w/ fresh horseradish were delicious. Â Coleslaw and tempura Green Beans w/ garlic aioli were tasty too.
We met 1st time Yelper Lili & had a blast chatting. Â Finally met Katie our L.A. East Yelp rep., nice girl. Â My phone kept telling me about friends checked in...I'm new to all of this...not sure what I'm supposed to do. Â Did not meet one of my Yelp friends Chuck S. just steps away....oh well, next time. Â Â We had a great time and will definitely be back for the prime rib.
Came here for the Yelp event last night. This place is definitely a hole in the wall and you could easily miss it to go to some of the other more popular establishments across the street. The food was delicious, the service was awesome, and parking was easy to find on the street. (Free after 8pm) The waiters/waitresses were all dressed up so that made it more memorable.
I was a bit curious though what the relationship between this restaurant and Disney were. I saw a few paintings of Disney characters and was just curious.
If I lived closer this would definitely be the spot to go to to get some drinks.
My dad used to bring the family here for Sunday brunch. We are that crazy family that has prime rib on a Sunday afternoon.
New visitors: You must order a protein of some sort. The Sweet creamed corn and spinach as a side are divine, so are the potatos. I love the baked potatos and the mashed are equally delicious. Yorkshire pudding, essential to an ideal meal at Tam O'Shanter, and you must soak up that prime rib juice before it touches your flavor plate.
Not everyone makes it to dessert here, but if you have a sweet tooth I highly recommend splitting a dessert or two with everyone at the table if you want to avoid that painfully full and guilty feeling.
I haven't tried every single dish here yet, there is no doubt that they will all be satisfying. In other words you don't have to love prime rib to eat here, you can be a vegetarian too!
Love this place... classic Los Angeles spot... I'd consider it to be a romantic spot too.
