The other reviews are spot on. Thai Taste has a wide variety of unique offerings that explode with the freshest flavors. Â Thursday buffets are a great way to try a variety of authentic dishes. Â I will never forget my first visit. Â I was on a date and the waiter could tell we were in to each other. He brought out the rice in the shape of a heart and it made both of us really happy. Â Six years later, I still love the food and the girl (she is now my fiance). Â You have to try the Crab Rangoon, it is very unique and unlike any I have ever tried. Â I also really like the Coconut Curry.
Review Source:Thai Taste is small, and feels a bit more like the owner's dining room than a restaurant--that's a good thing. Â We've eaten here a couple of times and have had excellent food and service every time. Â The green curry is outstanding. Â Honestly, I would pass that other place in BRip and dive the extra couple miles to go here every time. Â No waiting and the food and service are much better.
Review Source:So the mother in law and I decided to use my husbands business trip as an excuse to have a girls night. Â We took off for Castleton and she almost never picks the place. Â Im going gluten free for five weeks so I decided Thai food sounded like a winner. Â
We were a bit late for dinner and the place was still quite crowded. Â Good sign I thought. Â Then I noticed the line of tables and serving trays in the center of the restaurant. Â It was buffet night. Â Awesome!
Food: if you are a vegetarian I'd recommend ordering off the menu on buffet night as most of the dishes had meat in them. Â I'm not very strict about it so I just picked the chicken out of my curry and was good to go. Â Still they had a few meat free dishes. Â If you are gluten free this is the buffet for you. Â The noodles are all rice noodles, the only thing I couldn't eat were the spring rolls. Â Oh! Vegetarians should know that the first Thursday of the month is an all vegetarian buffet. Â Non vegetarians should know that this means there will likely be dishes outside of your usual options as Asian cuisine often has dishes crafted to be veg and not just subtract the meat add tofu that you get in places where going meatless isn't a longstanding part of the culture's religion. Â The food was fantastic and my only regret is my lack of leftovers.
Atmosphere: the restaurant is pretty dinky and tables are not spaced far apart. Â If you hate being friendly with strangers then avoid it, but I loved it. The tight quarters, packed restaurant, and necessities of interaction that come with a buffet made it feel like a party. Â Our neighbors were giving us tip on the place. Â When you had a question or needed the waitress she was very close by. Â The decor is fairly casual and features prints of Thai paintings that were pretty neat. Â They still had their holiday tablecloths out; we wound up sitting at the hanukah table.
Service: we got our drinks right away and the waitress was always around. Â If you dislike asking for attention then you might think they are not so good but as it was buffet night she seemed to follow the approach of I'm here if you need me. Â
value: for food as good as this in Castleton you really can't beat this experience. Â Match it sure but not beat it.
This place is a steal!!! The customer service is taken to a whole new level of awesome! I generally go there for lunch from work. All we do is call and the order is all customized & set on the table JUST the way each of us love it.
The cashew chicken is delicious. Not to mention the rum cake. That in itself is the reason why I visit Thai Taste at least once a week.
A full course meal for about $8, so it's definitely great value for money.
I liked the food here a lot. I got a cup of coconut soup and pad Thai. The soup was pretty good. I little strong with the coconut. I kind of wish I got thom yum instead. The pad Thai was decent but not the best I've ever had. Definitely better than a lot of places I have tried in Indy. My husband really liked the chicken. It was sort of fried with a sweet sauce over it. It was very different but we both liked it.
I would like to give this place a better review but there were a few things. First of all it seemed a bit expensive. We paid 30 and only drank water. If it was a fancier place that wouldn't be bad but it came out to about 15 a person. I remember going to places back in Chicago and getting better food, better portions for half the price.
It was also a strange atmosphere. I don't know how to really explain it. My husband said he felt awkward and a little uncomfortable. I'd like to come back here but probably get take out.
We were so impressed with everything about this amazing restaurant. Pad Thai and Thai Fried rice both had such deep flavor. Spring roll was crispy and fresh, and homemade sweet and sour was divine. Tom Yam (sp?) was spicy and awesome. Rum cake was moist and sweet. All for $7 for lunch. We will be back every time we go to Trader Joe's. The family that runs it is great.
Review Source:Thai taste is a decent little place. Â I've eaten in once and it must have been so-so because I'm not sure I remember what I had or that of any of my table mates. Â I recently ordered carry out when I was in the neighborhood for a Trader Joe's Trip. Â I ordered the fish cakes. Â Absolutely love them. Â They're bite size here..I undoubtedly could eat about 100 of them. Â I also ordered Pad Kee Mao. Â It was okay. The flavor was pretty good. Â However, I prefer really large WIDE rice noodles that are cut from the fresh sheets. Â Son had the chicken satay...very wonderful flavor but they were very dry. Fortunately, two year olds don't complain too much and they are really happy when they have peanut sauce with in reach. Â I'll certainly try it again when in the area. Â On a side note the family that owns the place seem really kind and concerned.
Review Source:My favorite Thai restaurant in Indy. Heck, I think it may be the only Thai restaurant in Indy worth a shout-out. I've eaten here four times and have never left disappointed. The staff are polite and attentive, and though small, the restaurant is cozy and comfortable. The food is fresh, flavorful and satisfying. Definitely order the Tom Yum Soup but sip slowly because it's fiery! The pineapple fried rice is another must-try. It will feed 2-3 comfortably. The yellow and red curries are creamy and packed full of ingredients. You will eat well but make sure to leave a tiny bit of room for dessert: the rum cake is to die for.
Review Source:*This review is only for their Thursday night buffet (non-vegetarian)*
We were super pumped to try out this Thai restaurant for the first time, and even more excited that the night's dinner service was a buffet.
For about 12 bucks we sampled from the buffet  mansaman curry, red curry chicken, pud Thai, pork fried rice, plain steamed rice, spring rolls, Thai toast, pud prik king, a soup and a desert. There were certainly a few more dishes, including some additional noodle varieties, that I can't quite recall.
My dining companion and I each had two overflowing plates of food, plus soup and desert, and we felt that our meal was a great value. The atmosphere was fun, and the staff were incredibly warm and kind. The place was busy, and it's easy to see why.
Based on the buffet alone, I feel comfortable giving 3 stars.
Why? Thai food has the potential to be amazingly delicious because of the delicate balance of various flavors: Spicy, Sweet, Sour, Salty. Though the buffet was a great value, and all the items sampled were fine, only one dish had a spicy kick to it (red curry chicken), and we were unable to detect the sour element in any of the dishes. Sweet and salty were the dominant flavors...and for me, that's not quite good enough. The food we had was more reminiscent of a Chinese buffet than Thai.
We plan on returning to order off the menu, and hopefully to give some more stars.
i hate being redundant, and I was dining with Zach B. who wrote an excellent account of our experience, but my highlights:
Food: fresh and scrumptious!! pumpkin red curry with chicken, and basil chicken, DELICIOUS, i love that they're not stingy with the vegetables
Service: Fabulous, they were quick, accomodating, and really nice. And they even give you a cookie with your check!
Love this place, it's a real find!
My girlfriend and I randomly stopped here for dinner on our drive from Chicago to Columbus. Conveniently located close to the freeway, this was an easy stop for some delicious Thai food. We had the pumpkin red curry with chicken and the basil chicken (I think it was number 14?) Both were excellent, the pumpkin added an interesting twist to the curry, and helped to balance out the spice with a little bit of starch. The basil chicken was delicious and full of fresh Thai basil.
The staff could not have been nicer, we got confused because our phones hadn't adjusted to the time zone, so we thought they were still open for another hour when they were really closed. They were so polite about it, told us to take our time and finish eating, and even still gave us the cookies with our check. Very nice people and very delicious food. Would definitely recommend this place for affordable Thai food that is excellent quality.
This is one of my very favorite restaurants in Indiana. The owners are one the kindest and most respectable people you'd ever meet. They have very very good food for both lunch and dinner, no matter what time of day or week you go, and they are always classy. Their Thursday buffets are amazing. We always go to their vegetarian buffets - first thursdays every month - and it's so popular, you always have to wait 5-10 minutes, but I've never seen anyone complain. It's worth the wait.
Review Source:Lovely family, fantastic food!
This restaurant is the one we take our friends to when we're wanting to introduce them to yummy food. I love Thai, and this restaurant is the best Thai in Indiana I've found.
The place is run by a family, and they are all so kind and recognize you. They have a great vegetarian (vegan) buffet the first Thursday of every month. Couldn't recommend more. I usually stick to curry or pad thai at other restaurants, but they have so many yummy dishes they've introduced me to on their buffet, I never quite know what I'm going to pick from the menu because it's all great.
Couldn't recommend more!
We ventured into Thai Taste mainly because it was right next door to Penzey's Spices and we were hungry for lunch! Â What a surprise! Â No wait, we sat where we wanted and the food was delicious. Â One entree of Pad Thai was plenty for two and the appetizers of spring rolls and crab rangoon were fabulous. Â Not too spicy and the flavor on everything was great! Â Based on other reviews, I guess we went at a good time (Sunday around 2:00pm) because it was busy but not uncomfortably crowded. Â The decor and overall environment was very authentic and welcoming. Â We will be back!!
Review Source:This review is based on attending a Yelp ISC event here. The meal was served family style and in many courses. I never saw a menu and I don't know the names of the dishes served but I believe most were "specialties" probably not found on their regular menu.
BUT, I can definitely attest that the food at Thai Taste is fabulous! Ditto goes for the service, cleanliness and atmosphere.
I enjoyed every item served. There were several delicious meat dishes ranging from chicken in green curry with a nice Thai basil flavor, whole tilapia fried crisp, chunks of sausage that were very herby and seasoned with a hint of lemongrass, awesome fried chunks of pork belly, a refreshing salad of various julienned veggies & dried shrimp that was deceivingly hot & spicy, a ground pork & noodle dish with a rich delicious sauce (a bit salty though), and some salty eggs that were hard boiled and salty - sounds strange but they were quite tasty.
Their sticky rice, as simple as it sounds, was perfect & yummy. Also, I really enjoyed the scoop of homemade ice cream - it hit the spot after my spicy meal, it was light & not overly sweet.
This place is pretty small and from what I hear they do a booming lunch business and get a steady dinner crowd.
I will return!
I am originally from Indiana (live in Chicago) and spent a lot of time at my babysitter as a kid.
Why is this relevant you ask?
Thats because this babysitter was Thai and I spent a lot of my childhood eating great authentic thai food.
Thai Taste did not disappoint at ALL.
We had some spicy soup (the name escapes me now) and wontons to start.
I was floored at the start, FANTASTIC! We got the soup extra spicy and it indeed was. I LOVED it. The wontons were also good and there were many of them.
For my main dish I got the Shrimp Pad Thai.
Pad Thai is of course the standard I try to judge my first experiences at Thai restaurants with as they all make it.
This turned out to be the BEST Pah Thai I've ever had. EVER.
Normally I'm not crazy about the peanut aspect but there were simply delicious. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and the veggies were definitely fresh and were quite tasty.
With all the comments on here about the mint ice cream I wanted to try it but sadly they were out which was fine because I was STUFFED and had leftovers in a box already.
The staff here was exceptional as well. Very attentive (which I needed since I overdosed on the spice) and helpful. The waitress seemed to get a kick out of how badly I was punishing myself with soup. I really enjoy when the staff stops acting so serious and businessy and can laugh at how I was punishing myself.
This experience left Thai Taste as my new favorite Thai place. I will definitely be going here any time I'm in Indy.
There are a lot of items to be had here, & a large amount of them vegetarian/vegan. I've been wanting to go here for 3 years & finally got the chance today. My husband claims to hate Thai food because when i make it at home, I use ingredients he hates. ( Coconut milk & peanuts used in a savory way). He was gracious enough to try it though & was glad we did. Husband's salt & pepper calamari was outstanding. He wanted to eat it by the bucketful. His beef salad(NamTok) was good, but decidedly not his favourite. The sour dressing had an odd flavour & had his nose running, but the beef was seasoned perfectly. I had an entree w/ eggplants, garlic, tofu, zucchini, green beans, & peppers, in red curry w/ basil. Damn it was delicious. I love basil in Thai dishes & the aroma of this dish was heady & mouthwatering. It was so good I didn't mind eating 2 vegetables I've never liked- water chestnuts & baby corn. The only part I didn't like was the eggplant itself. It tasted like oil. The tofu in the dish though made up for it. It was chewy & fried & soaked up that red curry. For dessert we shared a dish of ice cream. They make the ice cream in house & it showed. We ordered almond cookie flavour & it was the perfect accompaniment to the flavours & heat of our dishes. The dessert was super creamy & wrapped our tongues in cooling deliciousness. Seriously.. this stuff tasted like they took sweetened condensed milk & made it into ice cream. Creamy, rich, decadent & was made even better by us crumbling the complimentary almond cookies into it. Extra almond cookie-ness. Yes! If I lived on this side of town, I'd definitely try their vegetarian buffet on the 1st Thursday of the month, but as it stands, we'll definitely be back.
Review Source:I am a big pad kee mow fan - tried it here recently and was very disappointed. Bland - asked for med/hot - got med/mild. Tofu was tough - didn't realize it could be. I have had one other meal - Masman curry a couple of years ago and it was good. But not this time.
Will try again - other food I saw in the restaurant looked fine.
I've had several lunches and dinners here recently, and I'm totally hooked. Â The red curry with beef is rich and fragrant, with lovely chunks of eggplant and tender seasoned meat. Â The shrimp pad (pud) thai is very peanuty, and the shrimp is not the tiny salad shrimps, and it's perfectly cooked, a rare feat. Â Their thursday night buffets are to die for ... one visit recently featured garlicky mussels, massman curry with beef, yellow curry with chicken, pork fried toast and several other tasty dishes. Â The first thursday of each month features a vegetarian buffet. Â Weekday lunch specials are a steal, with a full-size entree, soup or salad, spring roll and a piece of delicious rum cake all for $6.95. Â The service has always been attentive, and the restaurant space is warm and cozy. Â I highly recommend Thai Taste for thai novices and fans alike!
Review Source:My husband and I went on a Friday night, great service and excellent food. Â We will definitely be going back. Â He was a Thai virgin, and ordered their pud kra tiem prik Thai which he liked, we shared Thai dumplings, and I had the yellow curry. Â Very good! Â For desert he had a wonderful mango smoothie and I had coconut ice cream which was the best I have ever had, full of true flavor.
Review Source:As my Thai Tour continues, I got to try Thai Taste today....I didn't check the reviews first and am glad, b/c I'm always a little hesitant when reviews are all over the place. Â My lunch companion chose this as she knows about my current obsession with Thai and knew I was trying new places all the time.
Located at 82nd and Allisonville, this is a fairly easy place to find. Â It is very small though compared to the other Thai places I have been and for lunch on Tuesday, it was PACKED. Â We had to wait about 10 minutes for a table which I thought was crazy, but hey, if the parking lot is full and you're not in a hurry, it's probably worth the wait. :)
I got the Pad Thai - I know ...boring, but I do feel that if they do Pad Thai (Pud Thai on their menu) well, it's only up hill from there!
Well, it was good, but not great. Â It wasn't spicy enough. Â I ordered it medium, but it was definitely more mild than other places I've had. Â It was still good. Â GENEROUS lunch portion for only $6.95 which also included a spring roll, soup or salad and rum cake for dessert (more on that later). Â The Pad Thai was more on the peanuty side than other places I have tried it. Â
My friend's cocunut curry noodles were AMAZING...perfect level of spice ordered at hot. Â It made me cry a little which was awesome. Â It was SO flavorful. Â If I go back, I am definitely getting that! :) I don't even like coconut, but mmmm...so good!
Now...my favorite part. Â I have never had a Thai dessert and they brought out a very nice slice of rum cake, which soothed the palate after the food. Â It was DELISH! Â Nothing over the top, a nice crispy crumb crust and really moist. Â It was a very lovely treat at the end of my meal that I had not experienced in other Thai locations. Â
I would definitely go here again if I were in the area. Â I hear they have a Thursday night buffet....how the hell do they fit it in there? Â I do not know, but it might be worth checking out to taste test a variety of Thai flavors. Â
On to the next!
I almost hate telling you about this but... VEGETARIAN BUFFET THE FIRST THURSDAY OF THE MONTH. Â Usually everything is vegan but I can't make any promises. Â It's always SO FUCKING PACKED and almost a little uncomfortable.
The quality of the food isn't super great but to me it is worth it to stuff myself once a month!
Other meals here are ok too, but I'd recommend Thai Spice or Siam Square over Thai Taste.
Thai Taste gets five stars for having what I consider to be the absolute best dessert in Indy. You haven't lived until you've tried their mint ice cream. None of that fakey green crap for Thai Taste. They obviously make their ice cream in house, and with fresh, fresh mint. It's worlds away from what usually passes as mint ice cream in the States. You can order the sticky rice with two scoops of ice cream for around $5, I think, and this is not to be missed. All of the ice cream flavors are exceptional (mango and lychee being particularly notable), but the mint is to die for!
Everything I've had has been fantastic, and I've sampled a lot of the dishes here, as it was a favorite of the ex-BF's family. Curry whore that I am, I can't help recommending that, but the ex was partial to the whole fish.
Dinner here is a great choice, but if you're in the area, seriously--come here just for dessert!!!
