Best Mexican food around - period. Doesn't matter the time of day/night these guys always make it right. It's inexpensive and proves you don't have to get artistic with food. Keep your fusion - I just want real food that doesn't require a 2 month reservation and 5 minute explanation of "what the chef has prepared." These guys prove when it's done right it speaks for itself. Great spot!
Review Source:Greatest Place to get a Burrito! Sober or drunk :)
This place was my late night joint when I lived at my old apt. The prices are fair and the guys that work there are great.
I love this place so much I sometimes will still take a cab out there when the I know the Mexican joint by my new apt won't hit the spot.
Oh how yummy this was. Â The exterior is a bit deceiving but once you enter you are warmly greeted by the person at the counter and offered some of the best Mexican food outside of Texas. Â This place has plenty of booth seating and a serve yourself fountain drink machine...yay!
I could not decide on one thing, so I got two. Â I had a steak taco. Â It a huge servicing of tender steak, cheese, lettuce, tomato and sour cream all cozily tucked into two corn tortillas. Â This taco was packed. Â I was almost too full after finishing it. Â But alas, I had one more thing on my plate, an Asada Torta. Â This sandwich was one of the largest tortas I have ever encountered. Â The grilled bun was filled with tender steak, tomato, lettuce, re-fried beans, sour cream and cheese. Â This was incredible. Â It just went down so easy. Â
We tried this place based on Yelp reviews. Â The reviews were dead on...This place rocks!
A friend turned me on to Tony's Burrito Mex one late night a few months ago. Â Went back last night on the way into the city. Â Best darn Steak Taco's I have ever had. Â Nothing special about the exterior but the food and service was above and beyond any Mexican place I have ever been. Â I will always make a stop at Tony's Burrito Mex when in the area.
Review Source:Don't be dissuaded by the somewhat rundown exterior. Â This is the most affordable, authentic Mexican place you'll find in an otherwise overpriced, yuppie area.
...I can say that. Â I live here.
Tony's doesn't care about shiny gimmicks, advertising, or even grammar. Â Their tip jar charmingly says, "Thank's for your'e 'TIPS'"! Â ...Improper spelling, apostrophes, and use of quotation marks in one strike? Â The food here must be GREAT. Â ...It is.
I've ordered a few different things at Tony's, but I always come back to the classic tacos. Â No matter which meat you choose, the result is delicious. Â I'm usually a picky eater- I hate sour cream and anything too spicy. Â The ingredients at Tony's are so well-balanced and complimentary that I happily consume every component.
Don't forget to order horchata! Â They have it bubbling in one of those machines usually reserved for lemonade and juice. Â It is SO cold and SO good.
I've not gotten to see the infamous, drunken, late-night version of Tony's. Â I'm honestly glad for it. Â To me, this is a legit place to pick up a fast, tasty lunch.
Let me reiterate: you will not find better carne asada at 1:00 a.m. in Chicago. Â
But should we take it a step further? Â Because I don't think I've found better carne asada any where else in Chicago no matter the hour. Â Tony's comes through every time. Â Even further, I've never had a hangover after Tony's. Â
So you should probably eat every meal here going forward. Â I assume they serve breakfast, because I've honestly never seen the place closed.
Ideal place if you're looking for great takeout mexican food. They do have some booths to sit at, but it's nothing fancy. Just good ole' tacos and quesadillas.
My favorite item: chicken tacos. They do it right, and I always compare places to this when I try it because they've set the bar.
Ideal for late-night, or just quick grab and go. Nice guys behind the counter, too.
Of course, there are better options if you're looking for a nice sit-down (like Uncle Julio's -- awesome in Chicago, although it was horrible in Dallas, TX).
This is the best mexican place I have eaten at so far in Chicago. Â It is a little out of my way but I still make time to get there whenever I can. Â If you have had a legitimate mexican culinary experience this will remind you of it. Â The service is very nice and you are able to sit and eat while enjoying your meal. Â
The food is very affordable and the portions are extremely generous. Â I highly recommend this place if you are in the mood for mexican food. Â The tacos are great and so are the burrito, especially if you get one suiza style.
The food is great, no matter your fate;
Such big servings you'll need a create, but it's fast so you wont be late.
It's the Guac that will make you squawk;
To you the cooks will flock, and for remembering you they rock.
Late night with friends you meet, to drink a horchata so sweet.
Chicken, Veggies and Meat - Oh Tonys is such a treat!
My taco is so fresh and hot to hold, but my rice drink is refreshing and cold.
And though the building looks worn and old - with the smells and smiles - I'M SOLD !
I LOVE TONY'S BURRITO MEX.
While this is a drunk destination for most, I love coming here whenever I'm craving Mexican food. I always get the Steak Fajita Burrito which is gigantic. I never skip the guac because it's absolutely necessary.
My boyfriend also loves this place and always gets the chicken tacos. I love the chicken tacos here because the meat is soft and is pulled chicken. Horchada is super yummy too - I like that they don't put a lot of ice in it because it means more horchada!
The staff is always friendly and even wave to me as I walk past the restaurant if I'm just walking around the neighborhood - maybe that's a sign that I go there too much? :)
Top Notch Mexican Stop!! First off, The Owner is always at the register taking your order correctly and making sure you get enough hot sauce... also very nice to EVERY Customer. Â Inside it's just a typical Mexican Joint.. Blaring TV/ Some Booths/ Counter Service/ Horchata Machine/ Etc. Â As far as the food? Everything is very consistent here. Â I like their Steak Torta/ Tacos and Steak Burrito the best... Also make sure to get extra "Green Salsa"! Â It's very fresh and has just enough kick! Â Been in business for over a decade so you know it's a good spot.. GTFJD
Review Source:One of my favorite taco joints, especially for a late night meal or cure for the munchies.
An old friend introduced me to this place over a year ago because she lived in the area. She was a frequent customer and got along pretty well with the staff.
One day, my card was declined because my bank likes to randomly take out fees for purchases made weeks prior. I had a few bucks on me, but still came up short and just told them to cancel my order. They gave me my food anyway. I guess since we came in so often, he knew I was good for it. The next time I went in, I made sure to leave a hefty tip in the tip container.
I love this place for that reason and because their chicken tacos and horchata are amazing. Their guacamole even surprised me and was absolutely delicious.
Definitely the spot to be when the bars close. I love the array of drunk people that come in here. GREAT entertainment while you enjoy your food.
Did I like Tony's Burrito Mex? Well, I liked it a little bit, but the main reason to go here is to experience this place between 2-4 am when the bars unload.
It is nighttime in Chicago and you have sweated your way through your g-string or Tommy boxers and you need some food: Next Stop Tony's!
Here you can see girls in tube dresses eating burritos like the adderral has worn off and Lakeview frat boys chomping away on burritos while trying to explain that they sell lumber or buy it or trade it or whatever it is you do with wood as fawning and yawning escorts nod and smile. On the curb a line will form where you can watch soon-to-hook-up strangers try to talk and those who could care less about talking pressing one another up against the wall. Oh, and did I mention the food? Well, you can get all the standard Burritos and most other Mexican food stuff, and they do a lot with avocados which is nice and even have veggie burritos (no seitan or tofu kids)....but mainly this place thrives on the zombie bar crowd. Tony (if he is the owner) is a happy - and probably rich -fella!
Not bad, not bad; really a 3.5 but since these places are like a dime a dozen in Chicago, it seems just "A-OK" to me.
Their guacamole came highly recommended, but I found it bland and a little slimy. Â It definitely did not taste fresh, as in made from scratch right after I ordered. Â However, I have to praise the massive portion. Â There was too much guacamole and not enough chips. Â I would happily pay 50 cents less for 25% less product in this case. Â I was dining in and couldn't take the extra to go. Â Oh well.
I also like that the chicken tacos here are pulled meat and not chopped little bits. Â Hooray for clearly identifiable meats. Â The tacos (chicken and steak) tasted pretty good.
What is it with Mexican joints that have a self-serve soda machine but charge for refills? Â To TBM's credit, they let you have one refill for free and then charge $0.50 for the next one.
A decent option if you're in the neighborhood, but definitely not a destination for either tacos or guacamole. Â Go to Rogers Park or Uptown.
After leaving the bars late on a Saturday night, I was whining to my friends because I wanted Nookie's and they insisted on going to some Mexican place in the boonies (or so it seemed at 4 in the morning).
I was so pleasantly surprised with the food at Tony's Burrito Mex. I seriously INHALED my chicken burrito, and some chips, salsa, and guac too. Not just good drunk food, but good enough where I, drunkenly, came to the conclusion that I would also eat it sober. Also, the service is great and the staff is very friendly. :o)
Tony's is perfect for what it is-a quick and inexpensive Mexican joint, open late. Â The service is great and the food is pretty good too. Â I'm a big fan of the al pastor tacos-they really hit the spot around 2am on a Saturday, and I'm pretty sure they'd be just as good any other time of the day too. Â Tony's-I'm a fan!
Review Source:THE PORK IS AMAZING!! Â i recommend the pork tacos because they are loaded with meat and other toppings! Â The taco dinner gives you two tacos and rice and beans for only $5. Â It's a great deal. Â Definitely one of the better places for mexican food in chicago!
The atmosphere is nothing special but it adds to experience! Â The service is super quick and the staff is nice. Â Also easy to park around there.
Staff is friendly and cool, they don't sweat out hard orders or special exceptions at all. The burritos here are out of this world, with a good sized portion and top notch, very fresh tasting ingredients. Their chicken isn't gamey at all, but rather nice pulled chunks of tender meat.
I've been hearing for a few years that this place has exceptional cheese burgers and I was surprised to find out they in fact have absolutely fucking bomb-ass good greasy cheeseburgers!
When J used to live down the street, all he would talk about was the veggie nachos. I have to say, the man has good taste, because an order of those nachos were just as welcome at 9pm tonight than 3am on a drunken Saturday.
Tony's is no-frills, cheap, super friendly, and FAST. I sat down and took maybe 2 sips of my mega horchata and BOOM. Al pastor taco with cilantro and onions right in front of me, which I soon discovered wouldn't be enough food for a normal adult, let alone me. (Who orders just one taco? Someone needs to some slap me.) So, being the loving garbage-disposal wife that I am, I helped J finish his nachos, topped with onions, peppers, beans, sour cream, guacamole, and liberal squeezes of their green sauce bottle. So spicy, so good!
I was a little dismayed at first when the menu described all tacos being served with lettuce, tomato, sour cream, and cheese. If you put sour cream on my tacos, you will get hurt. I made sure to order with cilantro and onions only. My beloved al pastor taco came out, double corn tortilla, served with a wedge of lime. Perfection.
Everyone has their favorite traditional taco joint; this is mine.
Been here too many times to count. Â NEVER disappointed. Â The tacos and tortas are awesome - try the al pastor. Â Never had a burrito, but they look amazing and everyone I know who has ordered one has loved it. Â I remember seeing one that was smothered with melted cheese and what seemed like an entire avocado. Â Might have to try that next time I'm there.
Staff is very friendly, service is very fast, and they're open very late.
Tony's Burrito Mex? More like Tony's Burrito Mecca. I have visited my share of taquerÃas in Chicago but time after time again I find myself back at Tony's. There is something almost holy about their steak tacos. Either that, or they are just sinfully good.
I live in the area so I have had a chance to run through quite a few of their creations. The best bang for your buck is by far the taco dinner; I frequent the steak or pork. I tend to stay away from the chicken, I have only had it a couple times but it didn't "Wow" me like the others. If it is your first time I would suggest walking in, ordering a steak taco dinner, and preparing to have one of the best meals you've had in Chicago for under $6. Oh yeah, and it will be piping hot and ready within 3-5 minutes. If you like a little kick don't forget to grab the salsa verde.
The burritos are also excellent; if you get a burrito I would suggest the supreme. It comes topped with cheese, tomatillo enchilada sauce, and avocado. Tostadas, sopes, enchiladas, and tamales are all very good but the tacos are on another level. The only thing that I have ever had an issue with at Tony's are the nachos, they are average at best. That's OK though, I fulfill my nacho craving at the Allende near Lincoln, Fullerton, and Halsted. Their pork nachos are on par with Tony's steak tacos.
Bottom line, if you are looking for a fast, delicious, inexpensive, and friendly Mexican joint Tony's is it.
Tacos so huge that you need TWO corn tortillas to hold them? Â CHECK
Tacos so cheap you only need TWO singles to buy one? CHECK
Tacos so fresh they're made to order in less than 5 minutes? CHECK
I work right around the corner from these guys, so whenever I want a cheap lunch, I buy ONE taco. Yes, just one is enough to satisfy. Â I've tried their chicken, pork, chorizo, and steak, and I have to say their steak is the best by far. Â You can get 2 tacos + rice and beans for around $5. Â CRAZY (or should I say...LOCO!)
Their large (they also have small) burritos are also HUGE for around $6. Â They're quite possibly comparable to Chipotle in size (maybe a little smaller), and definitely enough to put you into a happy little food coma.
Everything comes with sour cream, cheese, lettuce, and tomato--no paying for extras here!
Rice and beans? Â Pretty standard, but delicious nonetheless. Â And their rice is SUPER fluffy. Â $1.20 for rice, $1.20 for beans. Â Delish.
FYI they only have a handful of booths and a counter to sit at, but there is a park right across the street! Â Bleeding Heart Bakery is also right next door if you want to end on a sweet note :)
Tony's Burrito Mex is a delicious neighborhood quick-serve Mexican restaurant. Â I have taken the bus or walked past Tony's on several occasions, but I finally had the opportunity to try the food when ordering some takeout with friends. Â
The chicken burrito dinner consisted of a larger chicken burrito, refried beans, and Mexican rice. Â All was delicious! Â The chicken is shredded and had great flavor. Â I also ordered a tamal and a glass of horchata, both of which were excellent.
The employees were super quick and very friendly. Â Overall, a great experience at Tony's, and I will definitely return.
I am always staying overnight at my friend's apartment, which is right around the corner from Tony's. I've eaten there more times than I can count. The food is always good (although I really shouldn't have ordered that Tamale Plate on Saturday night at 3AM!) and the service is quick. Everyone is super friendly and prices are very reasonable! I definitely won't stay away!
Why didn't I get a burrito on Saturday!?!?!?
When I have a craving for a quick burrito or taco - Tony's is my place! Â Everything is freshly prepared and guess what? Â It's not greasy! Â Where I've been to similar places and have 1/2 grease and 1/2 burrito - Tony's burritos are fresh and not greasy.
The other cool thing is that they different burrito sizes - you're not bound to eating a gargantuan burrito with every order.
Service is quick in this no-frills place that just makes all of the typical Mexican stand-by's (e.g., tacos, burritos, etc.) deliciously!
If you have a craving for Mexican food -this is the place to go!
"We will take the your Drunk, your smashed, your hammered, even your blacked-out". Â Oh Tony's how you fulfill my late night inebriated hunger. Â This is your run of the mill late night Mexican joint. Â Get the chicken burrito with beans and rice, you can't go wrong. Â
P.S - after you go there intoxicated, don't go sober. You will be deeply disappointed
P.P.S - two of my "friends" relieved themselves out back. Â When you gotta go, you gotta go.
I hate reviewing places that have tons of reviews, but seeing as how I go to Tony's seemingly every week, I feel I should share my views. Â Here's is why I go to Tony's:
-Salsa on tacos. Â Not many places put salsa on their tacos, but it's one small detail I love. Â It's not some phony sauce either, it's got great flavor and a bit of HEAT!
-The chilequiles. Â They are so money, they don't even know it. Â My fav is w/ steak and red sauce. Â It's such a great cold-weather meal too, "sticks to your ribs" as Grams would say.
-The chorizo is the real deal. Â Spicy, flavorful, and authentic.
-The nachos are a meal by themselves. Â Hot, messy, meaty nachos = WIN.
-The staff is really cool and I've never had something come out other than the way I ordered it in all the times I've been there.
-Burritos in 2 sizes! Â When I'm sickly hungry and want to stuff myself silly, I get the big one. Â But when I just want to stuff myself moderately, I get the little one. Â So nice to have options!
The only reason this isn't a 5-star rating is there are a couple areas of improvement:
-The rice is just fair. Â Could use a bit more spice and seasoning.
-The horchata isn't anything to write home about.
Nonetheless, I love Tony's and you will too.
I'm not a fan of Tex-Mex food, but carbs and hot salsa win when it's 0º degrees outside. The cuisine isn't known for its vegetarian-friendliness, but it's possible in the right restaurant. Tony's had vegetarian burritos, tostadas, tacos, quesadillas, and more. All at very reasonable prices (get a combo meal for less than $6.50). Chips and salsa are a mere $1.50, with the salsa being fresh and very spicy.
The food wouldn't be worth much to Rick Bayless, but if you're looking for cheap, satisfying, and fast Tex-Mex food at 1am in the morning, Tony's is it... yes, especially when you're drunk as hell.
In a neighborhood with not to many options for lunch those that we do have we really want to like and enjoy...if we don't we are SOL.
I have worked near here for 1.8 years and I have never been disappointed with the food or service here. Â I have almost everything on the menu and each time I left happy and food. Â I like that they give you the dinner option which comes with rice and beans or you can just order single items.
Staff has always been extremely friendly and prompt.
Great, cheap mexican food right down the street from me.
It's about what you'd expect from a Mexican fast food place, but it seems cleaner, bigger and just better than most of the places I've been after a long night.
The menu is realy big and varied though I've only had their tacos and burritos, but both were very meaty and filling. They don't skimp on the meat here. I've also never had a really bad, gristly taco here which is why it beats out The Famous Taco Burrito over on Western.
I love Mexican breakfasts and they seem to have a lot of them here, so I want to come back and try them some morning, too.
One of the many, many, many, many, many reasons I miss Chicago. Â Not only are they open crazy late to stop all the spins from a night a drinking, but they open early to help stop the spins the next morning. Â
I ALMOST never ventured into Tony's because of the scary looking store front. But don't be fooled...the food is actually really tasty! Â And trust me, I've tried almost everything on the menu and never been disappointed. Â It's also really cheap (I bought food for about 8 people after a bday party for around $30!).
The guys who work there are super cool, polite, and sweet. Â Although I think I Â may have been a little too addicted to Tony's because when I came back for a visit a few months after I moved to Boston, the cashier cutie asked where I've been. Â A tad bit embarrassing, but it just adds to the charm of the place.
Oh, I miss you Tony's.
Ode to a Burrito
Oh, Tony's.
You deserve more than what I can give you,
As 4 stars would be appropriate for your menu.
You feed me as the night becomes mornin',
Even while the neighbors are a scornin'.
Maybe it's because your eats are delightfully greasy,
But I left tonight feeling rather queasy.
And although I enjoy your late-night eats,
Your oasis is no longer my preferred retreat.
So, goodbye to you, my mexican friend,
May those who enter have a better end.
I am coming here at least once a week for cheap Mexican food. They have pretty late hours on the weekend for that "Last Call has come and gone, and I got hungry waiting for the bus" feeling.
As mentioned, the drinks are fifty or seventy-five cents for refills, which IMO is not highway robbery by any means. I don't go into Brand-X fast food joint and have so many soda refils, I'm swimming, so I'm not going to do it here either.
I'd never had horchata before trying this place, but I will agree: it is addictingly sweet. As for the food, I've only had combo plates and single items, I've not tried the burrito's yet, which really, is kind of a bum move on my part, considering this establishment's namesake.
Misc: $5 minmum order to use a debit/credit. A handful of booths and a bar to sit at, seating is not bad unless they happen to be slam busy with eat-in orders.
This place won't get old anytime soon.
