I was told Wah Yuen use to be so busy that there would be long waits for dine-in and delivery. Hence, I approached the restaurant with elevated expectations but only to realize business was only mediocre as was its dishes.

I've tried their shrimp egg foo young, Mongolian beef, kung pao chicken, and barbecue pork fried rice. The shrimp egg foo young was served warm and the gravy was not even heated. Egg foo young gravies are usually lard-like thick when cooled so it wasn't quite a pleasant experience to devour that. Mongolian beef is supposed to be served on a bed of crunchy white noodles, but ours didn't have that. Did they forget? The kung pao chicken was pleasant but they forgot the peanuts which they proceeded to add to the dish after it was served. The barbecue pork fried rice was decent. I don't think anything can ever go wrong with fried rice.

All in all, I would still say my dine-in experience was pleasant. Wah Yuen is a family-style restaurant with some traditional Chinese setting and furniture. It reminded me of the family restaurants that Chicago had back in the 1980s. It also has a private parking lot and is not far from the Southlake Shopping Mall.
