I came here with some friends a couple months ago on a night of bar hopping. It was a Thursday night so the place wasn't extremely busy and more laid back.
I loved their cocktail menu, as I'm a fan of Moscow Mules and an even bigger fan of bourbon, so needless to say when I saw the Donkey on the menu I was ecstatic and it was just as good as I expected it to be. My friends and I split the triple dip appetizer and the bread and all three dips were great.
Then, I decided to order an Old Fashioned, which started out great. However, as I moved the orange peel around, I discovered that I'd been sharing my drink with a lovely moth about the color of the orange rind. I flagged down our waitress, who took it back to the bar, and I was then brought out a new, moth-free drink (nice, considering that I had already had about half of the first). I'm a bit sketched out that they didn't notice that, but then again, it blended in with the rind pretty well and the lighting in there was kind of dim and the rest of the place seemed clean, so I was probably just the one unlucky victim of a sneaky moth. Whatever, alcohol kills bug germs, right?
When we were ready to leave, our waitress came out with our bill and informed me that all of my drinks that night were on the house, which to me showed that they really did care about fixing that mistake. I'll definitely be back.
I've lived in North Park for almost 10 years and am just recently venturing out to this part of town. I know, lame.. but very fun and exciting! West Coast Tavern has wonderful happy hour deals as well as delicious food and drinks! I came here with a group of co-workers and we had a wonderful time!
Check it out!
After dinner at Urbn, we walked over to West Coast Tavern for our first birthday bar hop. We pretty much had a couple of drinks here before getting kicked out with the group. LOL good times!
This place does look like an old theater inside. Loved what they did to this place. We came here for the drinks. I gotta say they were on point with their security. They definitely run a tight ship here. We may come back and try for their food sometime when we are in the area again.
First, I would like to thank you all so very much for the incredible service and hospitalty that my pub crawl group recieved on Saturday evening. I couldn't have chose for a better first stop and hope that you all know what an amazing staff you have! :-) Â This event will definitley bring many back to your establishment!
Review Source:This is my FAVORITE bar in North Park. The ambiance is cool, the staff is great, the food is good and the craft drinks are swell. I like taking people who are new to North Park here. The building is historical and has the old brick touch. IT is also attached to a theatre in the back which people think is really cool. Only thing I don't like is that I do not get cell service when I am there so my phone always winds up searching and dies. Not sure if there is anything that can be done about that. Oh, I also love Sunday brunch there!! AND it is pretty much the only bar in North Park with patio seating!
Review Source:I love the vibe, the staff, and the food.
West Coast Tavern is an old movie theater. Â The front has been made into a bar but the back still functions as a theater. Â That's cool. Â It even smells like popcorn in the back sometimes.
The food and drinks are fantastic. Â They make some great specialty cocktails. Â I am especially partial to their Thursday half-priced bourbon nights. Â The food is great too. Â I had never liked brussel sprouts until I had a huge helping of them to share with my dad here. Â They were FANTASTIC. Â (The triple dip is just okay, to be fair.)
The staff is also awesome. Â They know their stuff, are on top of everything, and are super friendly.
Came for dinner and drinks showed up around 630 on a Saturday night an was seated right away. My table ordered the three dip appetizer, chicken flatbread, chicken sliders and pork sliders. If you order the sliders make sure to order sides. There's only two. Chicken sliders has a little spicy an awesome flavor! Chicken flatbread was also very delish! It was a little over priced for what you get.
Review Source:Whether you're at the bar, waiting to be seated, or at your table, the service in this place is fantastic. They do get busy, but they're worth the wait.
The food is awesome and the menu is a pleasing mix of pub food and whatever, something for everyone. The prices are fair and portions are generous.
The food here was good. However, I did feel that it was a bit overpriced for what was provided. We went on a Wednesday which was excellent because they have half price bourbons. The staff were polite and helpful with our reservation when one of our planned party was unable to come. I would go back during happy hour.
Review Source:Great spot in North Park. Went here to celebrate a friends graduation. We had reserved two tables since we had a pretty large group. If you don't reserve they charge a cover after 10:pm to get in.
As I get older I'm over clubs. Its too loud and too crowded and wayyyy to many people getting hammered. I like to chill, eat, drink and have good conversations and hangout with a good crowd. This place is small, but I like the atmosphere has a New York Vibe to it. Has Great drinks! I had the spicy peach margarita. Defiantly had a kick to it!
For an appetizer I ordered the Bacon and blu Cheese flat bread without the blu cheese. Can I just say WOW! amazing! Salty and Sweet. Perfection!
It can be a little crowded, the reason why I didn't give it 5 stars. But great service. The  bartender serves your drinks quick, and the waitresses are super nice and always on top of it.
This will be my summer time spot.
When my co-workers and I want a good drink (and let's face it, we're cooks...we always do), this is where we go. The bartenders and managers are great, and the bar itself looks beautiful. The drinks are strong enough and have good flavor, as does the food. I have nothing bad to say about this place.
Some people find the crowd unpleasant, but I have found that to be a rarity. However, I don't usually visit this place on the weekend, so maybe the bad crowd and I just don't cross paths.
Anyway, if you're going to drop into one bar in North Park, it should be this one.
West Coast Tavern is sort of like the gorgeous girl with the super cute classic dress that pairs it with a terrible shoes. And a horrible personality.
Gorgeous Girl: You know who she is in your head. She's gorgeous. She's tall, lean, and has thick voluminous hair. She has well shaped eyebrows, a classic Hollywood film nose, and a mischievous smile. Her skin is radiant, her voice is seductive, and her smell is alluring. Â She's exactly how the girl of your dreams is supposed to look, except she's actually real. So please put the tissue way.
And that's pretty much West Coast Tavern at first glance. There's something intoxicating about the basic layout, décor, and ambiance. You just want to get all up in it, and find a the right g(reat) spot to hit whether it's the bar, corner table, or out on the patio.
Super Cute Classic Dress: She's wearing a form fitting green dress that brings out her hair and eyes. Each seam and line accentuates her overall figure, but it never reveals too much skin. It's the kind of dress that could work in any decade. It's not a trend. It's a classic.
And that's pretty much the architecture of West Coast Tavern. It's an old renovated theater, so it looks super classic and vintage from the outside. If you walk towards the back near the restrooms you can see some of that old theater décor. It takes you to another place. And then you realize you need to pee really freakin' bad.
Bad Shoes: This gorgeous girl in the super cute classic dress decides to put on a pair of glittery 5 inch stiletto heels with spikes and chains all over them. No. No. No. And No.
And that's pretty much the basic concept of West Coast Tavern. It's not a tavern. It's a confused mix of sports bar, restaurant, lounge, and club with no dance floor. They have a bar, but they also had college basketball on, house music in the background, and a club feel with no dance floor. I was super confused because no one was watching the game, and no one seemed to care about the music. All people cared about was the drink in front of them.
Horrible Personality: So the gorgeous girl in the super cute classic dress that paired it with terrible shoes, just so happens to have a horrible personality. She has nothing interesting to say.
And that's pretty much the vibe at West Coast Tavern. The bartenders were lifeless robots. They seemed generally bored. But they got the job done. The real treat was the crowd. All the dudes were in their late 30s or early 40s, but still rocking greasy spiky hair and white sunglasses. It was about 80 percent men inside the place, and they all had a San Diego North Park (Jersey Shore) crowd look to them.
In the end, if didn't have some cool people there with me, I would have hated West Coast Tavern. It had so much potential. But it fell flat as it tried to cater to every possible crowd, but only ended up the San Diego Jerse Shore (North Park) crowd.
It should have just catered to the alcoholic crowd. Duh.
I stopped in here to meet up with a friend for a drink and some walking around. It's a pretty large space with the bar in the middle. I got this cool drink that was something to do with bourbon and tea.. and it was served in a mug. I felt like an adult drinking it.
The tater-tots were just your average run of the mill. But, what do you expect when you order bar food in a bar?
We'd come back!
You can't go wrong with West Coast Tavern. Â It has something for everyone.
No matter the time of day, WCT is buzzing. Â Need a comfy brunch? Â WCT has it covered. Â How about happy hour snacks or a casual dinner? Â Check and double-check. Â Late-night cocktails? Â Well...duh.
It makes sense that is WCT so multi-talented, since it's also a sprawling space with lots of little nooks and crannies. Â There's the relaxed front bar/lounge, the louder and more party-centric back bar, the dining room, the patio... and sometimes the crowds even spill over into the lobby of the Birch North Park Theater.
Most of my previous jaunts to WCT (and there have been many of them) have been for cocktails. Â The bartenders are some of the nicest, lowest-maintenance guys in town, and every drink they've ever poured has been outstanding. Â (I'm especially fond of their gin mule, but my favorite memory was coming here with a friend who was "with child" and then poured the most spectacular virgin cocktail I've ever seen.) Â
Recently, I *finally* had an actual meal at WCT -- brunch this time. Â We were able to snag one of the precious patio tables, which was perfect for people-watching and enjoying the breeze. Â I had the soyrizo scramble, while my guest had the BLT benny. Â Both were perfectly fine and edible (especially the scrumptious breakfast potatoes), but they were also a little on the bland side. Â Some fresh herbs and spices would've elevated both dishes to the ranks occupied by some of SD's *other* brunch behemoths (Tractor Room, The Mission, etc.).
Service is always wonderful. Â Relaxed but efficient, friendly but prompt -- just the way I like it. Â I didn't catch the name of our server at brunch, but she bent over backwards to make sure that our water glasses were always full and we were never kept waiting.
I see many visits to WCT in the future... It's a North Park institution already!
Came here for my sisters bday bash a couple weeks ago. Â Big group, probably about 12 of us. Â
We ordered drinks and plates without realizing this place was tapas style. Â The dishes came at all different times, the plates were petite and some of us were sharing. Â My sister and I got a shrimp dish and the lamb sliders. Â I tried some mussels, and mac & cheese as well. Â The food was good, but based on some of these stellar yelp reviews I've read, a little overrated. Â Yes they were tasty dishes but a touch overpriced and not spectacularly original. Â
The drinks on the other hand... yummm. I got a mango jalapeno margarita and it tasted like mexican candy a.k.a. it was delicious! The outdoor area was nice to sit by the fire pit and people watch too!
Overall, fun night, good drinks, good (overpriced) food.
I wanted to like this place more but it was just OK for me. Â They did a great job with the urban tavern decor and laid back vibe. I really like that they have a partial outdoor area in addition to the indoor bar, which is where we chose to sit. Â I started with a Maker's Mark on the rocks, and I was happy to see they use one big ice cube instead of just a bunch of ice. Â Whisky served proper. Â
The plates we ordered came out tapas style, which I really enjoy as I get to focus on and savor each dish and it's unique flavors. Â We started off with the fillet mignon skewers with a pesto-like sauce. Â I typically like my steak medium-rare, and thought the meat was on the dry side, but it still had a nice flavor to it especially with the sauce. Â Next up was the West Coast Ceviche, my favorite dish of the evening. Â The citrus vinaigrette and creamy avocado were perfect accompaniments to the freshness of the fish, sitting atop fried crunchy tortillas. Â But only 2 pieces of tortila and ceviche...what?! Â I want more! Â Last up was the grilled chicken flatbread. Â I wouldn't exactly call this a flatbread though, it was more like a pizza. Â Maybe it's just me but when I think of flatbread the term FLAT comes to mind. Â Crunchy, crispy flat bread. Â Yeah, this is not it. Â Flavor was OK but the cheese dominated and I couldn't really taste the chicken. Â Overall I was disappointed with the size of the plates and thought them too small for the corresponding prices. Â I may give this place another shot if I am in the area or during happy hour.
The location of this place is great. The food...not so great. I dined here with my boyfriend on a thursday evening. We were seated right away. Our server was less than personable. She was there to "work" not make a tip.
Their beer and drink selection is basic, nothing we wouldn't be able to find at another bar.
We ordered the bacon wrapped dates. Eh...the texture was different, but the bacon and date combo wasn't complimentary of each other. Also, there was a white dipping sauce that was bland. I saw no point in having the dipping sauce served with dates.
For our main dishes, I ordered a flat bread pizza. Again, it was at best okay. They added WAY too much mozzarella, so much that it took away the flavor of the other toppings and ingredients. My boyfriend's meal was the pulled pork sandwich. He too was sorely dissappointed. The bbq sauce used was too sweet with no tang.
Due to our disappointment of our meals we opted not to order dessert. Instead going to Heaven Sent Desserts.
I doubt we will go there again for a meal or a beer or for any reason...
I went out for Friday night happy hour with a friend last week. Â She was in the mood for whiskey, so I suggested West Coast Tavern, because I had a good experience a few weeks ago, and I saw in the Yelp Review Highlights that people said it's a 4-7pm Happy Hour - and it was about 6 when we headed over there.
We got there and two girls were at the hostess station, and we said we were just there for happy hour and would sit at the bar. Â They (not-very-gently) stated that happy hour was over. Â It COULD have gone like this:
Them: "Hi, welcome to West Coast Tavern. Party of 2?"
Me: "Hi, we're just here for Happy Hour, so we'll sit at the bar"
Them: "I'm sorry, our happy hour ends at 6pm. Â But please feel free to get a drink at the bar, or I'd be happy to seat you in our dining area"
Me: "Ok, thanks I'll go check out the bar"
But it went more like this:
Them: (Talking to one another and looking up finally, raising an eyebrow, and smiling but with no greeting)
Me: "Hi, we're just here for Happy Hour, so we'll sit at the bar"
Them: "Happy hour is over."
Me: "Really? that's a bummer - I thought Happy hour was until 7..."
Them: "No.... it ended at 6."
Me: "Oh...Well, thanks for letting me know, we'll go check out the bar"
Them: ..... *crickets*........ (back to talking to one another)
NOTE: Â HAPPY HOUR IS ONLY UNTIL 6PM.
The rest of the time there was also disappointing. Â We wanted to taste some whiskeys, and asked if we could have some tasters. It wasn't Wednesday night, but the bartender obliged. Â This would have been nice, but he rushed through the options and I didn't realize that one of the whiskeys he poured us a taster of was some weird, berry-infused whiskey that tasted like it was trying to be a girly martini - GROSS. Â It was a Friday night, but it wasn't terribly busy (we found seats right away, and there always seemed to be a few bar stools or a table open), and they seemed understaffed. There were a few girls at the little bar table behind us that had to keep getting up and ordering from the bar, because no one ever made it over to the table to serve them (while the other bar tables were regularly serviced). Â There was no effort to talk to us about the whiskeys, and when we asked questions about them the answers were short, rushed, or uneducated.
Honestly, the only reason I thought about West Coast was because I thought they had a late happy hour. Â Now that they don't have that, I'll opt for something else, Â or I'll just pay full price for a great drink at a place that employs educated bartenders that are passionate about their craft.
I give my most recent experience a 2-star rating.
But to be fair to my other 4-star rated experience, I'm giving a net average of 3 stars for now.
My lady and I were looking for a new place to eat, and that also had a happy hour ;) There aren't to many spots with "Sunday Happy Hour", and when searching for one, West Coast Tavern popped up. We went to check it out with my roommate and his lady. We had no idea what to expect.
WOW. Coolest vibe when walking in. You just feel welcome right when you walk in. Very "lounge" oriented which was a huge plus for me. THE DEALS; 2 dollar wells if you brought a 2 dollar bill and show your waitress, a very simple yet exquisite selection of happy hour food. 3 dollar drafts 3 dollar wines.
Between the 4 of us we had almost 12 to 15 drinks between all of us and 5 appetizers and none of us spent over 20 dollars. An awesome "Sunday Funday" kind of place. Will definitely be back.
The bacon wrapped dates and lamb sliders are so good, I daydream about them!
Besides that, this place is ok. Service is hit or miss. One night the manager made my best friend a little fruit plate and stuck pop rocks inside the strawberries. So sweet! But the hundred other times I've been there were just ok. I rarely hear thank you from the staff and sometimes they straight up ignore people from what I've seen/experienced.
I just expect bleh service now and enjoy my delicious dates and sliders! =)
I came here for my birthday and it was just O.K. Â Drinks were good, but you were definitely paying for them - a fact to which the old wallet can and will attest. Â I came with a group of 10 or so. Â No one was thrilled with their food and between the lot of us, we were able to sample a generous slice of the menu. Â There were sliders, pork ribs, fish, chicken, salad.. you see where this is going.. None of it remarkable and some of it downright disappointing.
Still, the vibe was cool - kind of dark and hip, so we enjoyed ourselves nevertheless. Â Service was decent, but don't expect a fanfare for your birthday. Â The waitress just sidled past and dropped a plate full of cotton candy on the table without a word to the wise. For me, the novelty was refreshing, but to the staff it all seemed so par for the course. Â
Maybe I would visit again, but I probably wouldn't recommend this place for any hallmark occasions.
west coast tavern is a spot to hit on a pub crawl tour. Â i've only been privy to the libations celebrations so i can't comment on the food.
it's a large space that good for group gatherings although they do get packed come the weekend. Â one time, i was hanging around the ramp and then the server stations since they were so bustling. Â love that they kept the converted movie theatre feel. Â i would stick to the mixed drinks or beer. Â the wine choices were not fab-o despite also being a restaurant during the day. Â however, they get an extra star for offering food late night.
they are on my to-eat list for brunch so stay tuned!
West Coast Tavern has good food and excellent service.
Despite going on a crowded saturday night, the hostess and waitress were accomadating and attentive. The blue cheeese and bacon pizza was amazing, so were the brussel sprouts. I highly recommend these.
The chicken wings and chicken/waffles would be something i pass on.
They also have interesting tables on the patio were there is a little fire in the middle of the table for keeping warm
When I said I wanted more "muscles" for my new years resolution I meant I wanted more of the mussels from this joint. Â These delectable lil cockles warm the cockles of my heart. Â Really, just lather me up in that chipotle tomato creamy broth and gimme that Bread and Cie sourdough to sponge up. and. do. not. dis. turb.
Then we have the Mac d'Jour. You will J'Adore. Â Don't question it, just order it. Â Even when I hear an ingredient I don't particularly like, this dish still winds up in the creme de panntays column. Â I like to pair this with the warm green been and mushroom salad...they douse this in the most divine vinagrette. It's a lil piece of ambrosia plucked straight from the gods' plate, sinfully deelish.
If you'd rather drink, there's an extensive craft cocktails menu...whet that whistle with a poison you never even knew you'd pick, guaranteed you will languish in any of the luscious liquory libations offered.
Have no idea what you want? The servers and bartenders will happy guide you through their sizeable spread culminating in the most comely carte.
West Coast really brings it all to the yard...and their milkshake IS better than yours.
Not sure if they have an actual milkshake, but they really bring it all to one spot: fab food, dynamite drinks, and stellar service. Â So good, it might be sin.

400-600PM Everyday!!
$5 Sliders...dua of meaty sliders, pretty darn good!
$5 Five-Spiced Wings...my favorite and a great value!
$3 Wells, Beers, and House wines...FUC YEAH!
The regular menu is overall reasonable, with some tasty flatbreads and mac'n cheeses. Â Drinks are normally on the pricier side($7.50 for a Stella???), but then again there's no cover charge for their jumping(sort of) Friday and Saturday nights. For North Park, the crowd is more Douchyish than Hipsterish...but I love you all.
I've been here for the night life but not the restaurant, so I decided to indulge in my hobby in trying all the hot spots. I came here for dinner with my friend... And uhhh yeah should have just came for the dranks.
We got the ahi tuna plate, filet mignon skewers, mini BBQ chicken slider... And yeah, most of it was suppose to be entrees by ended up more of a tapas style entree... Aka not much food. A little disappointed be because I'm a big girl, I like meat and beer, and all I got was mostly beer. The portions can be a little bigger... The ahi tuna wasn't cold enough and there were only 8 thin slices... Sauce was a little weird as well... Then the chicken sliders were good but small... The filet skewers were good though and had a good sauce.
Again if you aren't hungry and like to spend a normal amount come here. The place atmosphere was cool though. I would come back only for the bar later at night...
Okay, for whatever reason I haven't reviewed you yet. I'm here at least once a week. I love that your food options are available until midnight -- it gives me something other to eat than Mexican food.
Your waitresses are always oh so helpful.
On football nights you can find me in the back bar, watching the game on the projector. Thus far, I haven't had too much of a problem getting the audio switched over to the game. For that I thank you.
happy hour has some decent deals and you get a bit of an upscale experience at a moderate price.
