I always get the soft corn tacos. Â They are greasy, they are horrible for you, and they are messy...yet...I love them and get them every time. Â I've seriously never ordered anything else there. They are just what you need late at night, early in the morning, or to assist with hangover avoidance. Â They have free parking too!
Review Source:If you live in Chicago you know that if you go to a "Windy City (anything)" it will be delicious. Secondly, you know that if you go into a gyro restaurant (and please pronounce it correctly) and the men in the kitchen all have those little paper hats on, it will be the best food you've ever eaten. This place is the best! It's my go to for everything! They have a huge menu, cheap prices, and daily specials. They ask to pay in cash to help keep their prices low which I totally agree with! You can get a ton of delicious food for very inexpensive. Must try!
Review Source:THE BEST fast food!!
No frills, no fancy fixtures. Great fast food and good portions at reasonable prices. They have 2 constant specials for each day of the week that comes with a drink and soup or salad, which is a great deal for the price.
This place is open til 2am or 3am during the week and 5am on fri and sat. During the week this place does good business for lunch and dinner crowds. It's clean and has several booths so sometimes I eat there even though I live in the neighborhood.
On the weekend, this place is always packed at 1, 2 and 3am. But, it doesn't matter what time you come, the food is ALWAYS consistently good. Call ahead and they'll have your food ready for you when you get there.
My favorites: gyros (their sauce is GREAT), charbroiled chicken breast sandwich, chicken breast on pita and rib tips.
Their fries are always done to perfection and they have THE BEST pickle spears :0)
You're not gonna find anything unique at this spot, but it gets the job done. Â Good amount of food for the reasonable prices, good variety (gyros, burgers, hot dogs, tenders, etc American). Â The service is pretty quick and it's open late in case you are looking to fill the belly during the dark hours of night.
4 stars, not 3 because I've been here multiple times and they've been consistent with the above mentioned every single time.
The food here is pretty good overall but what keeps me coming back is the soup. One of the guys at the counter told me he makes it homemade everyday. I'm not sure if that's exactly true, but it's so good I don't really care. I've had the lentil, navy bean and cream of chicken. The cream of chicken is the best. The lentil was a little more tomato-y than I prefer but basically good.
As far as other food, I've stuck to Greek food, as the place seems to be primarily run by Greek people. There's so many other places to get good burgers and hot dogs, so why get it here? I really like the Gyro salad. You get the good Gyro meat and sauce but it's nice on top of a Greek salad. The Gyro sandwich meal, as well as other meals, comes with fries and (you guessed it) a soup option for the side. Definitely get a lot for your money here.
The crowd this place attracts is a little less than desirable. I don't mean to sound like a terrible person - I'm part of it. There's a mix of drunk people, cops, and just seemingly angry people. For that reason, I think the guy who takes the orders is a bit unfriendly and short in his tone, but he gets the job done.
Get the soup and the gyros. I imagine many of the people who felt like garbage after coming here were perhaps hungover for other reasons.
Quantity, not quality. Really bland, boring fries with tons of meat make up the gyro platter. Hard to finish it all. The food was out fast, but the service was gruff. Seemed like it could be a cool working-class neighborhood spot. Wanted to like it more as I'm really getting into gyros right now.
Review Source:Ay dios mÃo!
I have such a bad time (hangover) after Windy City Gyros... oh whoops I'll just blame it on the food here... I never get drunk/hungover/out-of-line.
You stupid drunks need to sober up. (This coming from someone who's drunk every night of the week.)
Great gyros. Best off a Kronos spit I've had in Chicago, and I usually go either late on a Th. or Fri. or early on Sat. or Sun. and everything is good.
Windy City Gyros never lets me down and I think they have the most delicious gyros that I have ever had. Â They pile the yummy meat on and you likely cannot fit it in the pita that it is served on which is also lick your fingers yummy! Â I typically order the gyro plate which comes with fries. Â I like their fries a lot. Â If gyros are not your thing, they have a little bit of everything for everyone from burgers to chicken sandwiches to salads. Â They have ice cream too! Â The service is quick if you go there for a to go order. Â You can also call ahead. Â A lot of seating inside, they have a parking lot but it is not huge. Â The prices are fair.
Review Source:Went here for some late night food and it all tasted fine. The gyro meat was a little dry, but all in all not terrible. What was terrible is how I felt the next day!! Stomach unsettled the entire day even after some ginger ale and pepto bismol. I wondered if it were something else I ate or drank throughout the evening, but my friend had to take off work because of how terrible she felt. And the only thing we both had was some Windy City Gyros!!
Apparently people really like this place based on past reviews, so maybe we just had a single bad batch of something. Either way, I will be avoiding this place like the plague.
I usually get a gyros or burger. Sometimes I'll order the chicken dinner - plain. On a lark tonight I ordered the chicken dinner Greek style. It was very good. The chicken has a good rosemary, lemon, and oil flavor (also I think it had garlic and thyme flavors). I had expected the plain chicken with sauce thrown on. However, it seems that this chicken was cooked in the Greek-oil sauce and had the Greek flavor throughout - Excellent!!
A small disappointment was that I got only 2 of their small napkins for a very messy, but fulfilling dinner.
For only $8 I recommend the Greek style chicken dinner.
One of our go-to places when fast food is the only thing that will do. Check out their daily specials which come with a drink and salad or soup. My friend and I usually have either the gyros or greek chicken and both are recommended. Skip the dessert options though. Easy parking, easy access, good value for the price.
Review Source:Good food specials and relatively nice to your wallet.
You can call ahead and pick up in the time that they say. Â Your half chicken that you order to go will be ready in about 5 minutes, and they have a fish sammich.
Late at night this place tends to be Sausage City, with some Lakeview creepy older dudes all around (I mean this is by the Hotel Chateau). Â But hey, it is what it is: a typical fast food Greek joint. Â
The food is decent, the staff is pretty nice, and the restaurant is clean.
Great service!!! They made my chicken gyros even though it is NOT on their menu!!!
Great hot food!!!
Place is packed!!!
Clean inside despite lots of traffic in here with done in and carry outs...
Prices are reasonable...
FREE WiFi in area just check log in user agreement!!!
I will order here again!!!
I will eat inside again too!!!
I like Windy City Gyros because it's good and convenient. They're open extraordinarily late, but after about 10, those "naked-women-themed" slot machines in the corner get a little shady (both because they're actually in use and the people usually utilizing them are old fat men with mario-mustaches and one hand on their crotch, the other on the lever).
I wouldn't say the food here is amazing by any means - but, like I said, it's pretty good and I can get it at 2 AM. Another plus is that it isn't expensive, so you can eat well for less.
Just don't expect like amazing customer service or anything; they do what is necessary: take your order, take your money, and give you your food. I always try to make the old guy laugh and I think one time he cracked a smile - WINNING!
Anyway, I'm definitely a fan of this place. Yum.
I've only had gyros fries and onion rings here. Not very impressed- but their gyro is really pretty good. onion rings are school cafeteria style.. its just fried bread in an "O" shape.
Weirdly they offer a lot of variety  on their menu including fish, hot dogs, gyros, soup, salad... very eclectic items.
Give it a three because although they are located in a safe neighborhood, I always feel really uncomfortable inside.
watch out for their "specials".. .they're really not specials at all in terms of pricing. it's more expensive for a special than it is on their regular menu.. although they give you "extra" items like soup, etc... you're paying what you would've paid on the regular menu.
however, b/c of location.. i'll still go to get a gyro when i want somethign different, but i'll always bring my bf with me for protection!
This spot was mentioned in a recent Yelp gyro thread, so I thought I'd take it for a spin the other night. I dropped in around 11PM, when things were kinda quiet there. Ii ordered the gyros sandwich combo. It was ready pretty quickly and the fries came out nice and greasy right from the fryer. Staff and the other customers were kinda nasty. Felt like I had taken a little trip to a sketchy part of New York. A couple of street people lurking out front. Â
I was disappointed with the gyros. It was dry and leathery, and it sported little trimmings or sauce. There were  sad old tomatoes. Fries were outta the freezer, under-cooked in the fryer, and right into the little red basket. I did finish it off since I was famished,  but I doudt I'd ever come back, nor would I recommend it to anyone. Picky, picky,  picky here about my gyros.  Probably have passes a few hundred through this old tummy. Also, the $10 combo price is too much for the quantity/quality. I'd give it a 5.99 at best. Try negotiating if you go. EL-O-EL!
Usually, if I do cross into bad-decision territory and indulge in some late-night noshing, my first choice is Mexican. Burritos, specifically! There's just something about all that cheese, skirt steak, cilantro, guac, sour cream... and, let's be real: more cheese.
But sometimes, I wish to change it up, and I remembered that Windy City Gyros had piqued my curiosity many a time when driving by. Not the kind of food I craved mid-day when I happened to be near, but a greasy conquest bookmarked in my head for a more apropos time. Like this particular evening!
With gyros in the name, of course I had to order 'em. I ordered the gyros plate not knowing what was in store for me - a whole lotta meat! Seriously, this was a meatlover's paradise enveloped by styrofoam. And tons of crinkle fries. The gyro meat was well-spiced, hot, fragrant.... basically everything you could wish for in a 1 am gyro. However, you'd think they'd supply you with some extra tzatziki when ordering the plate as opposed to the standard sandwich (since there's so much more meat), but you only get this teeny tiny cup. Sad face, as it ran out 1/4 of the way through. Another piece of pita would have been much appreciated, too! Still, pretty solid 'must eat before crashing!' grub.
Remember to bring cash or be faced with the fees at their ATM - no credit cards here!
num num num.
Best grilled cheese around! Prices are decent, they have specials everyday for you penny pinchers. I used to come here as a kid and the place has changed a bit. They used to have more games now they have poker machines for all the oldies that come there...and yes there are quite a lot. Service is quick and the food is delish!
They are cash only, BAH! Yes they have a ATM machine but they charge you $3 extra.
This used to be my favorite place when I was in the mood for greasy spoon type food or I was drunk and hungry.
It's open real late, I have had my many nights of eating there at 2am.
My favorite is the chicken in a pita w/o the sauce and an order of mushrooms.
The only thing that was icky to me was one of the last times I got take out, a teeny little bug crawled out of the bag of mushrooms, ICK! Â Well, it's a dive, what do you expect, right?
You will definitely get your $$$ worth with their generous style servings. The daily specials alone come with fries or rice and a drink. Also served with soup or salad. Now that's deal! This pass month alone I have tried the wings dinner special, super taco on pita special and grilled chicken on pita special. All tasted great and cooked to perfection and seasoned too! It seems like everyday is a new special so don't worry about getting the same thing each visit, they do change things up a bit.
Parking is easy, because there is a parking lot. Or just call ahead for your order faster pick-up if you don't want to wait.
Now this is Chicago style:
Dineresque look. Â Plainly simple.
Great prices.
All lunch special with free soup or salad. Â The options change daily.
A smorgasbord of options (Ribs, Gyros, Tamales, Burgers...)
Chocolate dipped ice cream cones for $1.
And a cook who yells the prepared orders.
What more could ya want?!
When you're trying to gauge the quality of a place that serves everything from fish and chips to chili dogs to tacos, you're probably better off ignoring reviews by people who have only been there once. It's no coincidence that most of the favorable reviews are coming from people who have put their arteries on the line to search out the gems on the menu.
If you're familiar with restaurants of this ilk, you already know what 80% of the menu tastes like. It won't be the best (sober) gyro you've ever had, and the burgers, dogs and fries are predictable, but it's all good.
It takes most people a few visits before they decide to try something else, but that's when you start finding the really good stuff. Their Italian beef is truly one of the best on the north side of the city, and the Italian combo (Italian beef and an Italian sausage) is a spicy, gluttonous triumph. The chicken in the chicken pita is grilled, and lends an awesome char-flavor to this huge sandwich (which is by no means healthy - hooray mayonnaise). The whole chickens are much better tasting than what you'll find at Jewel, though I've had a few that were a little scrawny.
The guys that work there are always entertaining and they love flirting with the girls that come in during drunk hours. Ambiance isn't why you're there, but the place is clean (and cash only).
So give it a try, but don't get angry when your burger is only so-so or your pizza puff is over-fried. After reading the reviews of those of us who have repeatedly thrown our circulatory systems upon the mercy of Windy City's menu, you only have yourself to blame.
I've been back about a dozen times now, perhaps more, and have tried several different things. The gyros are quite good, but not particularly different or better than other places around. The hot dogs are nothing to write home about, but the chicken pita might be the star of the show. Everything's made to order, cops eat here, and there's always a pretty interesting mix of people dining in... so you know it's good.
Solid choice if you're hankering for some grease.
So I'm at work one night, and someone asks me to place a food order for everyone.
Sure!
I am handed a list of food and a phone number. Â
I order the food, and the guy says "Ten minutes."
Cool!
I later find out that Windy City Gyros is not in walking distance, and everyone  was too busy to pick up the food right then.  A half hour passes...I call WCG and tell them we will still come for the food.
An hour passes.
We're hungry. Â We're busy.
Finally, someone goes to pick up our delayed dinner. Â
One would expect a cold, soggy bag of fries and hot dogs at this point...
but nope!
The fellas there re-made everything!!!!!!
How awesome is that? Â
That's a fine example of "going the extra mile" if you ask me.
Eh, its a gyro joint. Â Seemed a bit expensive but then when my food was up I realized there was enough on that tray to feed two people, so maybe it was priced just right.
Of course, I had a gyro with fries and a salad. Â Really, the food is nothing to write home about, pretty much on par for a fast food type gyro shack, it was good but nothing spectacular.
The place was swarming with people, most of whom were annoying pre-teens twittering amongst each other...ugh..have I told you how much I hate kids yet? Â
The staff is super efficient, taking orders, cleaning up after people, wiping tables, a well-oiled machine, this place.
Not worth it...
Enough said...
I mean it...
Overpriced, crappy hot dog and fries that did not make me want to come back. The late night thing might be the only positive thing about this place, but even that's trumped by the Taco Burrito House across the street. Might be the worst hot dog/fries combo I've had in this city and that's really sad.
Great greasy chicago staples at all hours! Â The food is definitely not healthy but really good. Â The price is right and the portions are big.
Can't go wrong with Gyros, cheese fries, or chicken pita. Â But my personal favorite here is a bacon cheeseburger. Â It is a close second to Portillo's as my favorite burger. Â Take it for what its worth!
I don't know whether this place is cheap or not. It seemed like it was both. Does that make sense?
I first realized this place was here when I got hungry and went to Quizno's across the street. I didn't know what I wanted but after I got my food and sat down, I looked across the street at Windy City Gyros and said, "DANG. THAT'S what I wanted."
That's what I finally got about a week ago. I wasn't disappointed, but I wouldn't say there's anything really that sets it apart from other Gyro joints I've been. This place is just what you're looking for though, if you want just plain ol' fries, soda and whatever.
If you are looking for Greasy Chicago food this place is the spot. Â When I first moved to the city I think I put on 10 pounds because the food was so good and 30 feet from my front door. Â I usually tell the cabs on my way home from a night at the bars to stop by here instead of going to a night of drinking.
The Gyros are excellent and probably the best in the city.
The Chicken Pita is what I go for if I want to convince myself that I am eating something healthy, although that is hardly the case.
The Cheeseburgers are excellent.
Great Italian Beef, one of the best in the city.
Hot Dogs can't go wrong.
I know all of this and wonder why I put on all that weight...
Ohhh...I have to pay more for the special? Â Wait....what?! Â If I get the special I get the "free soup" but I pay a dollar more for the special than if I got the same thing without the soup.....that is free.... Â My brain hurts. Â But that wasn't all. Â
After getting the gyro "special", I felt like someone punched me in the stomach. Â The soup was a coagulated glop of something that resembled Cream of Broccoli. Â The only crackers around were me and my buddy. Â Granted they gave me enough gyro meat to make 36 sandwiches. Â But that didn't make up for the smell of the place. Â Not to mention the constant interruption of people asking me to spare some change. Â The rest of my night was ruined because now in my stomach was a grease ball of lamb flavored sawdust paste.
This place is so bad that as I write this, I am actually getting nauseous. Â So.....let's say it's bad.
Currently my new favorite place for drunk food. Â The cheese fries are amazing here. Â So is their chicken philly sandwich. Â My friends have said that they have great burgers, too!
The staff is always friendly and good spirited as they have to deal with alot of annoying, intoxicated people. Â I give them props because I couldn't do it. Â Also, I swear that they don't take credit cards...that's why there's an ATM machine in there....but maybe that's what I THOUGHT i heard them say.
I hate you, Windy City Gyros.
I hate you because you are literally next door to my apartment. I hate you because you are open until 4am on weekends. I hate you because you are cheap, and I hate you because you have wonderful greasy cheesy gooey cheese fries. I hate you because when I am drunkenly stumbling home I cannot resist said cheese fries, and sometimes a burger, and occaisionally a hot dog, and often some chicken fingers.
I hate you, Windy City Gyros, because I have no willpower, and you are delicious.
