Best sushi in South Orange and Maplewood so far!
We got some sushi and shrimp tempura bento box to go last night. Its our second time there. Small place, very tasty sushi. The price is reasonable. Staff may not look super friendly but they are nice people. Â Better sushi than Ariyoshi. Would def go back again soon!
So, apparently this place has new mngmt. Â And it has fallen from grace...so sad. Â Prices have gone up, lots of the cool things that used to be on the menu are suddenly no longer available, and the people who work there barely greet you upon entry. Â Oh well, at least we still have Kim's over in West Orange. Â We all know their sushi is bomb-diggity.
Review Source:Me and the wife would go here all the time because the food was great, Â now it's just terrible. Â The management has change hands and the quality of the food and service has gone way down hill. Â On out last and final visit we had to retrieve our own menus, sit for 20 mins before anyone even uttered a word to us, wait three times as long to get our food which was not done properly(over battered tempura and uneven rolls that differed in size and portion of fish). Â I don't see them lasting. Â Please go somewhere else and enjoy yourself or you shall end up like us having to go home and drown our sorrows in a bowl of cereal.
Review Source:Horrifying experience. Just the worst.
I don't know what is wrong with any of the other reviewers, but I've just returned from the 'lunch from hell'. Â This place is a creep-show of epic proportions. Â From dirty stained cups half full of warm water (ice is 'broken') to ridiculous lunch menu prices to terrifying staff plugging and unplugging a computer on the TABLE next to us, this is probably the least appealing dining establishment in the greater tri-state area. Â There's a reason its constantly empty.
Avoid at all costs. Â Go to Ariyoshi if you want sushi around here, its not great but at least its a real place.
Wouldn't go back to this place if there was a zombie apocalypse and I knew that this place had the only food and safe shelter for thousands of miles. Â I'd sooner roll the dice with the flesh eating monsters than return to this cesspool.
Service is fantastic, price is great. Â Food is good as long as you're happy with tasty non-authentic.
Ramen was spicey Korean style ramen, but lots of fishcake/fishballs/toppings. Â Beef Teriyaki was very tasty, but more of a stir-fry style. Â Tempura udon had 2 pieces of tempura shrimp, but not much else in terms of scallions, fishcake, etc.
Still looking for an authentic Japanese ramen place near-by work...
The miso soup is really comforting, and tastes a lot like the miso soups I have had in the past for a welcoming appetizer.
A friend and I had the sweet potato roll and we liked the crunchiness and the sweetness of the inside, and the salmon and California rolls were off the charts great. I really want to come back again. I actually want see if they would make a few new made up sushi rolls I came up with.
Yummy take-out dinner for four for only $40.61? Yes, please. [smile]
First of all, as most of the other reviewers confirm, the staff at Yama Sushi House is the nicest and most accommodating group of people ever. Add their fresh and tasty food, and you have a definite winner.
The vegetable ramen was a satisfyingly hearty soup, without being overbearing (or over-salted), and on my personal spice-o-meter, it hit the spot as a moderately spicy entree. I wouldn't have minded more veggies, though, and maybe even some tofu.
We also got the vegetable tempura and the vegetable dumplings. Both were pretty good, but if I had to choose one over the other, I would go with the dumplings, which had more flavor. My brothers thoroughly enjoyed (and devoured) the large order of shrimp tempura and the chicken teriyaki.
Side note: It took me longer to get over there to pick up the food than I had anticipated (since I had to wait to vote), so I called to ask that they separate my ramen noodles from the broth to keep them from getting soggy. I was delighted to learn that they had already done it for me. Big hearts for Yama!
In re delivery service: Yes, they deliver, but only during lunch hours (11am-3pm). I asked.
The upshot: I'll definitely be going back to Yama Sushi House, not only for more of that delicious ramen, but also to try the many vegetable rolls they offer.
GREAT SERVICE, GREAT PLACE, GREAT PEOPLE.
Although it's not the best sushi place to go to in S.O, you still got to come here for the BIBIMBAP. Â It's bomb. Â Rice, topped with bean sprots, bulgogi, Â eggplants, fried egg pieces, and hot spicy sauce to top it off. Â YOU ALSO GOT TO TRY THE FISH SHAPED ICE CREAM...
DOPE
Yama for yo mama is bomb....ahhhhh
Finally some good sushi close to home. I had the beef bulgogi, delish! and my kids loved it too. My 15 month old went crazy for gyozas! spicy tuna roll was so fresh. So happy to have found this place, I don't need some fancy japanese restaurant. I want good quality Japanese food and you get that here and hello they have green tea ice cream and fish waffles!!! Â
The prices are great for the portions and quality. Mt. Fuji(IMO) is over-priced and not even good.
Next I plan to try their ramen, would be nice not to drive to edgewater for a decent bowl of ramen.
The employees are very nice, ahh I think I found my happy place since moving here.
OK sushi place run by Korean people; they've included a couple of Korean items on the menu. Â Otherwise, the menu is somewhat limited compared to other "Japanese" places. Â I had the crunch roll (tempura shrimp with veggies) and California roll with mango on top, both of which were pretty tasty. Â Have to give them credit for having somewhat original rolls, at least. Â The staff was friendly. Â For whatever reason, they did not have ice the day I was there. Â No refreshing ice water for me on a hot summer day. Â : (
Review Source:it's under new ownership and now a new chef within the past week  -i'll be reviewing it again though. quite soon I'm sure. previously though, any and every roll was delicious -granted, i've had better eel but it was still pretty "standup". the owner was particularly creative with the rolls as well and would create rolls from time to time and give them to patrons to try for free.  new ownership looks promising though -i'll keep you guys updated.
Review Source:Looking for a Japanese restaurant for lunch on a Saturday around Essex County. Â
Most of the Japanese restaurants open at 4PM. Â I think it's part of their culture.
Luckily, I found this restaurant, thanks to Yelp.
The food was great, I had chicken teriyaki and salmon sashimi.
It's kinda expensive for the sashimi since you pay $2.00 per slice.
It was worth it though because it was soo fresh!
My uncle and my dad ordered beef teriyaki, and they said it was not that tender.
What I also liked was the fried ice cream! -- a must to try!!
Since I am entertaining guests, the ambiance is a downfall.
But the waitress/cashier and the chef were very friendly.
My mom who never liked Japanese food said we should eat here again!
