Outdoor patio was perfect on a warm day! Good: Smoky salsa with fresh warm chips; Freshly made guacamole with lots of flavor; Yummy enchiladas with verde and chipotle sauces. Not-so-good: Prickly pear margarita had zero citrus flavor and just was not good. The people I dined with got other kinds of margaritas and were very happy with them though.
Review Source:I was excited to go here on a groupon my husband purchased because they have a vegetarian/vegan menu.
Overall, i was pretty dissapointed with this place. My dish was pretty salty and bland overall - Â and it was actually pretty expensive. I want to say it was close to $60 for my husband, my three year old son and i to eat here. We got two entrees, my son got one vegetarian taco, and we got an order of guacamole and 2 drinks (soda and lemonade).
I may return with another groupon, but i definitely wouldnt pay full price for this food.
I've been to Zapatista a few times for birthdays/celebrations, and it's a good place for Mexican food... not my favorite... but it's good. I usually always get the sizzling fajitas - and let me just say... they are always sizzling and I like how they serve it. As for the salsa, I like it alot - probably one of the best I've had.. mainly because it's really spicy! The guacamole was good as well. The only reason I didn't give Zapatista 5 stars is because I've tried other items on the menu, and I didn't seem to love anything but the fajitas. So I would definitely recommend going and trying them out!
Review Source:Went to Zapatista for lunch with my co-workers today. We originally were going to go for restaurant week, in which you have the option of choosing any appetizer, entree, and dessert off the menu for $22. However! They have incredible lunch specials here. They have the option of choosing any 3 enchiladas, tacos, or tamales, with a side of rice and beans, for $10.99 (winning!). So we all went with that option and left feeling very happy. The things I tried were the following:
-Salsa and Chips (complimentary) - I was surprised how spicy this was, especially since I can handle spice (since I am Indian and love spicy food), but most of my co-workers thought it was a little too spicy for them. There was a good amount of roast on the peppers and that flavor really came through.
-Guacamole - we ordered a mild bowl, which was really fresh and delicious. They don't make it tableside, but they do make it about 10 feet away from where you are sitting, in the middle of the restaurant.
-Carne Asada Taco - yumm, these are delicious! They are served like street tacos, in housemade double tortillas, cilanto, onions, and a lime on the side to squeeze on top. Absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. I feel like most people would need 3 to fill up on these.
-Carne Asada Enchilada - It's interesting because mine came with some sort of cheese sauce, while my coworker's chicken enchilada came with a mole sauce. I guess they don't really tell you, but match the sauce to the protein, which is excellent. Mine was good, but I wish there was more filling to it.
Rice and Beans - they were the normal rice and beans you would expect at any mexican restaurant, nothing really special about it.
If I come back, I would definitely want to try one of their specialties, like the seafood goodness.
The waiter informed us that on Fridays they serve all you can eat fish tacos. I am sort of a fish taco snob, so not sure if they will compare, but might as well try it once? It's a beer battered, or cerveza-battered as they say in the menu, tilapia. Although they do also have cerveza-battered Mahi Mahi, which is my number one choice!
All in all, excellent service and good food. I would definitely come back!
You know, I liked Zapatista's. Was it the best Mexican food I've ever had - definitely not, but the atmosphere and the service was great! Â We arrived on a chilly evening and the first thing I noticed was the architecture. Â I really thought this would be a dangerous happy hour spot. Â We were seated quickly and were given menus. Â My group was starving so we were ready to order in less than 10 minutes. Â I ended up ordering the Enchiladas. Â They were good and the portion was big enough to where I wasn't full. Â What I will say was the desert with the plantains was DELICIOUS. Â I seriously could've gained a lot of poundage had I not controlled myself. Â When you come here you have to get this desert. Â Even if you have to get up early to go to the gym the next day - just go ahead and do it. Â I would go back here again.
Review Source:I've been to Zapatista a couple of times hoping that I'm going to love it but I just can't. I will say they have great lunch specials that are good. The atmosphere is nice, it's a great location. When you're seated at your table you are immediately served with good salsa and warm chips.
It's definitively average... but I will keep coming back because of the location. I'll update my review if there is something that I order off the menu that is amazing.
I came here for lunch a few years ago and it was OK, so I thought I'd give it a try for dinner with a larger group of friends.
We had a reservation, however when we arrived, they did not have a table ready, they took a 5 person round table and crammed in 2 more chairs. Â Not surprising, when the food arrived we had no room whatsoever to fit it all. Â (Fajita's take up quite a bit of space!) Â Our waitress, while friendly, seemed to be either serving too many tables, or just overworked, we could barely catch her attention.
Food was ok. Â I had the carne asada fajitas, I requested well done steak, they came out medium-rare. Â When I pointed this out to a server (our waitress was too busy to deliver our food), he said, "dip it back in the bowl and let it cook in there for extra 5 minutes". Â Hmm, I thought I told you how I wanted it cooked?! Â I received about half a leaf of lettuce, half a tablespoon of sour cream for my 10oz of steak fajitas. Â Come on guys, do you have to be *that* cheap? Â Another person had the steak and plantains and said it was literally the best steak he ever had (and he is a steak expert), so that was surprising. Â The desert was pretty awesome, it was plantians with ice cream set on fire. Â Yes seriously, set on fire to melt! Â I didnt expect it, it was a cool little show. Â The only problem was the table next to us, who had 2 small kids under 5, and the kids got freaked out. Â They were pretty darn close to the flame, I imagine if one of them reached their hand out, they could have been burnt. Â But what else can we expect when they crammed us in to a small space!
Now here comes the not so cool part. Â A friend had a margarita, it was delicious and big, but not worth $12. Â Especially not worth $12, when it had a big piece of plastic in the middle of the crushed ice, that she didnt see till nearly the end. Â Maybe it came off the bag of "margarita mix"? Â Who knows. Â She pointed it out to the waitress, who shrugged her shoulders and said "Hmm", that's it. Â Did the drink come off the bill, NO. Â Did anyone apologize or offer a replacement drink? Â NO. Â Unacceptable. Â Another friend ordered patron shots, waitress brought them "chilled", by chilled it meant diluted 75% cold water, 25% patron. Â Not cool. Â
Lastly, service. Â The waitress seemed to have her head elsewhere, and it was a strive to get her attention. Â I guess it wasn't a strive for her to automatically add on the 20% (not 15% large party tip). Â So for the $80 tip she added for the 1.5 hrs we were there, she could at least have come to refill our pop or water. Â As soon as she dropped the bill, she ran off. Â Never to be seen again.
This is an average Mexican food place, that has above average prices. Â This type of service doesn't fly with me, and other yelpers reviews confirm the same.
Me gusta la comida de Mexico!
Who doesn't love a good taco every now and then? Zapatista was great, an awesome bar, strong drinks, fun atmosphere, and delicious food! I had the Plato de los Santos, meaning Plate of the Saints. It was a special that include lamb, chorizo, shrimp and steak. It all came in on of their clay pots with a spicy sauce (not mole, but tasted similar) It was really tasty. The chips were hot and crispy and salted which is muy importante. The salsa was fresh and had a nice chipotle flavor to it.
They had a guacamole bar where you can tell them what you'd like in it and you can watch them make your guac right in front of you. Que Fresco!
HOLY MOLY!!!!!!!!!!!! Â SO MUCH MEXICAN FOOD!!!!!!!!
My awesome boyfriend bought a LivingSocial for this place and boy oh boy was I glad he did! Â This deal was pretty awesome, $39.99 included the appetizer sampler, which was phenomenal, 2 entrees of up to $23/ea, and 2 margaritas up to $8.50/ea. Â We took full advantage of all the food and it was well worth it! Â I had the mahi mahi tacos which were served with a citrus-y slaw, soooo nummy and Mike had the fajitas.....which looked and smelled absolutely amazing!!!!!! Â The margs were fabulous, the guac was freshly made and absolutely perfect. Â The service was fantastic, I honestly can't say enough good things about this place...it was a dynamite experience and I would go back in a heart beat!!!!
I was equally disappointed in the food and the service at Zapatista. It seemed like our waiter found any requests very annoying, and we later found that he only boxed up part of our food for us (I was missing a whole taco!). Â The food was mediocre at best. I found all of our meals to be pretty boring, despite the fact that the menu had some crazy sounding descriptions for the food. I would probably rather go to Taco Bell and spend $2 than spend $15 on a boring taco.
Review Source:Stopped in for lunch on a weekday and had their lunch special with Vegetable and Fish tacos with Mexican Rice and Black Beans. Â Loved the chips and salsa-hot chips and tasty salsa, but the guacamole and my tacos and sides were just so-so. Â Not bad, but not great-I'd probably come back if it was convenient, otherwise I'd look elsewhere if I'm in the mood for Mexican food.
Review Source:I left a glowing review of a different Mexican place in the area, and claimed that they had "Darn good Mexican food around town". Â I wanted to try to prove myself wrong with Zapatista.
I did take-out, and ordered the pick 3 lunch combination -- I chose 1 steak taco, 1 carnitas taco, and one pollo tamale. Â The corn tortillas were TOUGH, CHEWY, and DRY. Â Come on, guys, no self-respecting Mexican restaurant would allow this. Â This is very basic stuff. Â And it's not like I was late to pick-up -- I was waiting in the lobby for my food, so it's (theoretically) straight from the kitchen. Â The carnitas meat was not bad, though. Â Not hard to mess up.
I asked the woman on the phone if the tamale was like homemade -- wrapped in a corn husk. Â Nope, it was not. Â She might have misunderstood me. Â It was mostly dry-ish corn masa, and little chicken, smothered in mole sauce. Â Not a good ratio.
The weirdest part of my take-out order was that they put my beans in one of those non-disposable, plastic salsa dishes that a restaurant usually uses for dine-in customers. Â A souvenir for doing take-out, perhaps?
To compare, the other Mexican place offers a 2-taco, rice and beans plate for $6. Â Zapatista charges $1.99 dollars more for something similar, but throws in some warm tortilla chips. Â Although... it was only one lunch special I ordered, it was a very GENEROUS bag of tortilla chips, definitely more than I would eat in one sitting BY ITSELF.
Overall, it's possible I might return someday due to its vicinity. Â But if I'm craving Mexican, I'll opt for the other place. Â I suggest that Zapatista takes a closer look at what they're doing.
TL;DR - Shabby Mexican take-out.
Went here once for a friend's birthday party and had a good experience here. It definitely wasn't my best Mexican dining experience and certainly not the worst. However it did fulfill our Mexican craving. The atmosphere was cool, a little dark, and definitely fun! We had a group of at least 15 and the service did keep up with all the dishes we ordered. I remember really liking the salsa and chips, but they were a little too crunchy for my liking, but def. on the authentic side. I guess I just like more Mexican fusion style food, it's like give me my pork belly taco with some mangos or something along those lines.
We did have the chicken tacos and they were definitely edible, certainly have had better ones elsewhere, but I can't really complain. Definitely worth trying out for a celebration dinner since they did a great job with service from what I recall. and the birthday boy left happy! They also let us bring a cake and cut it for him, which was a nice touch.
This place needs proper management. I've been going to this place quite a few times and every time I feel so uncomfortable. Employees make you feel very unwelcoming, very rude, annoyed and rolling their eyes if you ask for anything...they never answer any questions unless they go and ask the manager what they have to say..
Went there with a few friends for some drinks & apps around 10pm and asked for the happy hour menu, waiter said "Sorry, but our happy hour is from 3-6pm
I told him on their website it reads happy hours 3-6pm & 10pm till close. Waiter then tells me that the website has false advertisement and it should be updated. The manager comes and hands us the happy hour menu (20 min ltr).... We got up and left. Â I'm Not coming back again!
We had our rehearsal dinner here, and the food was fantastic. Â We were met with massive bowls filled with a smooth, chipotle flavored salsa when we walked into the back area. Â We were served a wonderful salad with a fresh, latin flavor, vegetarian and chicken quesadillas, steak fajitas(see photo), and vegetarian enchiladas. Â The fajitas were definitely the best part of the meal. Â They were great for veggies and carnivores alike! Â I was so full by the end of the meal that I didn't even try to dessert. Â
This is a great venue for indoor or outdoor dining. Â The area was a good size for fifty people although we fit a few more since some people showed up for the rehearsal dinner without a response.
In a geographic location like Chicago and the north 'burbs in particular, we are very hard pressed to find anything resembling a decent Mexican restaurant. Â Believe me, we keep going on Yelp to find something, ANYTHING, and coming up short. Â There is one place in Highland Park (Isaac) that continually gets great reviews, but every time we try to go there, we discover they are closed for religious holiday observances. Â Anyhow, we were running some errands in Northbrook the other day and saw Zapatista in the back of the parking lot. Â We shrugged our shoulders and said "Why not?"
This restaurant has a really cool vibe on the inside, even though it can't completely shake the feel of being a suburban shopping mall restaurant. Â The menu was a bit confusing in the sense that it has a lot of unique items that require some extra reading and asking questions about to the server. Â The chips are decent and the salsa has a little fire to it, which is nice.
We settled on the empanadas and the plantain tostadas. Â Empanadas were really delicious, but there were only 2 on the plate, leaving us wanting more. Â The plantain tostadas were sorta' "meh" in the sense that they were mashed into a guacamole dip and scooped into a ball on top of a mini tortilla. Â Interesting and unique, but not necessarily scrumptious.
I ordered the chicken mole enchiladas and was very impressed. Â My wife ordered the quesadillas with steak. Â She was raving about the flour tortillas, saying it had a really delicious flavor to it that you don't get too often from tortillas. Â
For dessert, we had the chocolate fondue. Â This was a disaster from the start. Â The server brought it to our table and somehow forgot to mention that the silver bowl that the chocolate sauce came in was skin-blisteringly hot. Â My wife found this out the hard way by grabbing the bowl to reposition it on the plate, only to burn her thumb and forefinger to the point where she was soaking it in her glass of ice water for the next 5 minutes. Â On top of this, the fondue really wasn't all that unique or special in any way. Â I was hoping for maybe a Mexican take on the chocolate with an exotic blend of chocolates and mild peppers or something. Â Instead, it just tasted like your run-of-the-mill dark chocolate sauce. Â The fruit was fresh, but the pound cake was stale. Â
Net-net: while Zapatista can work in a pinch and is better than many other imposter Tex-Mex options in the surrounding area, we're still on the hunt for our favorite Mexican restaurant but have not found it yet. Â The search continues...
This place started off nobly trying to aim at Rick Bayless level quality. It never made it, but it was an admirable attempt and we enjoyed the place at that stage. But they seem to have changed their business direction and seem more aimed at the Chili's crowd with blasting loud, boring corporate rock. It went from being a solid Mexican restaurant into something resembling a frat boy party room. Bring back the real Mexican feel to the place and we will come back. But if you just wanna be like every dull run-of-the-mill chain restaurant, we will stay away. Go back to chasing Bayless and not following frickin' Chilis.
Plus, the food is always served nearly cold with the exception of the fajitas and the cocktails are decidedly mediocre.
The atmosphere is truly impressive, I loved it from the time I walked in... and then it went downhill from there.
To start off with, the waitress was sitting and chatting with her friends for about five minutes before she actually got up and introduced herself, low and behold we did have a waiter/waitress.
OK so I give it to her that she wanted to finish her conversation; I'm pretty sure you shouldn't actually be sitting down with them though.
We ordered the guacamole, I was under the impression that it was made at the table, big disappointment, it was just brought to the table already made. Not cool.
The margaritas were OK, but they didn't come in margarita glasses, weird but OK.
Now the food, I had Ceviche and the other two both had enchiladas. The Ceviche  was OK nothing to write home about. I would suggest skipping it. I was told the Enchiladas that my friends had were good; I tried a little piece of one of them, and I found it somewhat bland and unimpressive.
We decided we were done and left, but the curse of this place didn't leave us at all. My friend was not feeling well after this place and neither was I. So I would skip this place all together.
We were lured with the social coupons back into this place, and somehow they seem to have done a 180, and it's been great during both recent visits. Â I would definitely recommend you give this place (another?) shot. Â
They have an amazing brunch deal that for some reason is totally under-promoted. Â On the weekends, all of the brunch (breakfast) entrees are $5. Â I couldn't believe they were full-sized entrees and how incredibly good they were. Â Go to their website and check it out.
During our recent brunch visit we tried the breakfast tostada thing, with black beans and fried eggs on top. Â The plantains were perfect, and it even comes with hash brown potatoes. Â We also had the "mexican eggs benedict" thing with chorizo. Â Their chorizo was especially flavorful.
The lunch specials are also a very good value. Â They seem to have heeded the too salty complaints, because we felt that previously.
Overall service was excellent, we were constantly offered more chips, salsa, and coffee. Â Speaking of coffee, it was perfect diner-style coffee (not Starbucks strength), and served in an Intelligentsia cup, so I presume it was Intelligentsia. Â
We'll be back for sure.
Met a friend here for dinner after work. Walking in, the place is impressive. It was a beautiful night, so we ate in the outdoor patio area. It was pretty nice, and almost made you forget you were in a parking lot.
The waiter was really nice and attentive, and offered recommendations since we told him it was our first time there.
We both had the $5 special -sangria. It was OK, but very watered down and not fruity.
The guacamole came next. They make a big deal that it's made fresh, and for your table, but I wasn't very impressed. I can make better guacamole at home. Very little in it but the avocado (hardly any peppers, onion, or tomato). And very salty.
We ordered the fajitas for two. It was pretty good, but not $30 good. The place was much more expensive than the food dictated. The place seemed upscale, but I can find much better food at dive-y joints in the city.
Overall, I was not very impressed. My friend seemed to really like it though.
My favorite Mexican place in the burbs and probably in the Chicagoland area. The food is awesome and so is the services. The often have deals so you can get a great meal on the cheap. The decorations are nice too. My wife and I love the fresh made guac. We usually get the same entres: the talapai enchilada with the shrimp & scallops and the beef fajitas. Sooooo good!
Came here last night and our waiter, Alex, was great. Extremely helpful and gave great service.
ps. Huge, yummy margaritas
Visually - this place is fantastic. The food looked great. The restaurant looked and felt hip. A table where they make your guacamole is a cool idea.
But in my pie chart of reasons I go to restaurants - the visual aesthetics piece is smaller than the, "is the food as good as it looks" piece. Unfortunately for Zapatista the food taste didn't match its appearance. (sad trombone)
I think there's a lot of upside for this place. There are a lot of food and drink specials and service was great.
But, when it comes down to it, I'm happier to buy ugly food that tastes good than pretty food that tastes blah.
mexicali dark beer and nachos are AWESOME. The fruit fondue dessert is also super yummy, will be back
Caution: Â It can get expensive for mexican food so if you are on a budget like me, work the deals

I've eaten here twice, including once for a special occasion meal, and every time has been spectacular. The staff was attentive and friendly. We had no service issues. I thought the food was AHMAZING. The salsa they serve with the chips is out of sight -- a darker, Chipotle-infused sauce. I'm normally NOT into spicy foods as all, but I could eat that salsa the whole meal and not complain. We also had the pomegranete guacamole twice and it was to-die-for. My mom said it was the best guac she's ever eaten.
Additionally, being that I'm a gluten free eater, I was reassured when I walked through the door and saw the University of Chicago Celiac Center logo on a plaque that the restaurant had received. I don't know what Zapatista had to do to earn that award, but it made me feel like my concerns about eating gluten free would be taken seriously. Both times I ate at Zapatista I ordered off of their gluten free menu and suffered no ill effects at all. Just a happy tummy. What more can you ask for?
Zapatista. Oh, geez.
Do I raise issue with the fact that a yuppie Mexican food joint on the north shore is named after a revolutionary group of impoverished, peasant insurgents? Why, yes-- how did you know?
But despite the poor branding (what's more appetizing than peasant farmers who'll kill for land reform?), this place is really enjoyable... if you forget you're in a parking lot in Northbrook, of course.
Part of what I like is just the design. The wooden tables (so peasant-Zapatista, darling!) and the handmade-looking glasses help make things look interesting.
I also like that there is a separate gluten-free menu. It keeps things simple, although they also gladly modified a dish that I wanted from the main menu.
It's a little more than I like to spend on not-quite-designer Mexican food (nothing wrong with a taqueria, in my opinion), but that's alright. It's nice to sit and get familiar American service, feel assured of the gluten-freedom of your tasty food, and feel like a Zapatista... or something.
A-okay Mexican fare in Northbrook.
Thumbs up:
* All the pictures of Zapata! Mustaches makes me happy.
* Spicy salsa! I like things to kick me a little. It makes life more exciting.
* $5 margaritas on Monday night. Add an extra 50c for the sugar-free, low-cal prickly pear margarita - pink, sweet, fruity. A guilt-free buzz? Could it be?
* Many options for my #2 favorite food (tacos, if you didn't already know). I tried the beer-battered mahi mahi with cabbage slaw and the garlic-marinated shrimp with corn. Both were tasty. I will back for another taco feast!
* Tons of parking (strip mall and all).
* Friendly service. Not once was I confronted with an empty glass of water.
I would maybe skip the ceviche (a little too much filler - onions, jicama, etc) and the tres leches (a little chalky tasting). Still, it is close to J's office AND right next to HomeGoods. Book a reservation on OpenTable (look for the 1000-pointers) and rack up some points! I was a little intimidated by the low average, but honestly, this place is exactly what I was expecting for a large restaurant serving Mexican food and tequila to Northbrook. If you want an authentic, cheap taqueria, look elsewhere... but if you want to nosh on some chips and salsa while downing a few margaritas, Zapatista is perfect! (Come on Mondays!)
What an awesome restaurant! I came in with a co-worker the other night. We had the made to order guacamole with there chips and salsa. Very tasty and the spice temps. were just right. To drink we had a couple of million dollar margaritas which were unbelievable.
After this our entrees arrived promptly. We ordered a couple of fresh Viktorias and got started. My associate had there duo of lamb. I'm assuming it was good considering he wouldn't stop talkin about it! I had the carne asada entree. They put this interesting spicy bread crumb medoly on it that just complimented the steak so well. All in all I will be back at Zapatista time and again.
Been here a few times. Â Decent margaritas. Â If you order their daily drink specials, my waiter didn't even know they had daily specials and kept changing what was being offered.
Their snapper was tasty and fresh. Â The Casuela de Marisco is basically a pot of seafood with mainly tilapia and other fish. Â 2/3 of the mussels didn't open. Â If we go back, I'll stick to their traditional dishes like tacos/burritos/fajitas, etc. Â
Great outdoor seating for the summer. Â It used to be busier but business has definitely slowed.
I'm very surprised at all the negative reviews, been here 4 times and every time was a great experience! The best menu items are hands down the molcajete fajitas, especially if u do the shared one with steak and shrimp.
The lamb entree is also very good, as is the tableside guac, side of plantains, the tostaditas (try all 3 kinds!) Â and the seafood stew (cazuela de mariscos).
The salsa is very good and the refills keep comin!
After a while it all starts to taste pretty similar but w/e still good!!
On a lightly patronized Sunday night 3 of us arrive and the hostess is nowhere to be found. Plenty of wait staff cross in front of us, and I even ask one if we can be seated. Â A waiter says the hostess will be 'right with me'. Â That is NOT a good sign - it indicates a paradigm of 'not my job'.
Hostess takes her sweet time to get to us and once seated we continue the unenergetic service experience with a waitress who just didn't seem to have it together and really didn't car. Â Given the other reviews on Yelp, it seems that this is a common problem. Â
We had to ask for more of the following: chips, salsa, water..common theme is not much attention paid by the server to check on us. Â Food also took 20 minutes - which for Mexican is a long time.
Listless service, food was okay but not enough to overcome the poor service. Â Two stars because the guacamole is good as are the chips.
I went in to check out the Happy Hour menu and visit Zapatista for the first time. The interior and feel of the restaurant is very nice - but at 3:30pm on a weekday, the large restaurant was practically empty. (The restaurants in the Glen across the street were pretty busy)
I can see people really enjoying this place if it was packed and more lively, but after seeing the prices on the menu in comparison to other Mexican restaurants, I can see why not many people may just drop by for a simple Mexican meal.
We tried the empanada, taco de la casa (carnitas), and guacamole. I also tried their horchata (cinnamon rice milk). Each item was $3 and portions were tiny! It really wasn't much of a deal to order off the happy hour menu.
The taste was very average for all the items - nothing special. I expected the fresh guacamole to be amazing, but found it very luke-warm and bland, if not overtaken by the tomatoes put in there.
But service was good.
I thought it was such a waste of good space (building, location, outdoor seating, decor) and could be a great happy hour spot if they gave more generous portions and had some music on.
Awesome time here the other night!
The reservation process was smooth and as soon as we walked in...we were seated right in the main room.
We ordered the fresh made guacamole and ceviche that were made at the table next to us by a couple of young ladies who were non stop at that station!
The ceviche had a nice spice too it but not overwhelming. It was citrusy with a perfect amount of cilantro. The guacamole was outstanding and while I would prefer to order the spicy one, we ended up getting the mild and it was still perfect.
For the main meal, you would be re missed to not get the fajitas. The choices were aplenty: Fillet, shrimp, carne asada, fish, chicken. Â Also, the Carnitas Tacos are to die for with a nice spice and cilantro sprinkle!
The flour tortillas were the perfect size and the side accompaniments added a colorful palate to an already good meal.
For my drink, I had the Pineapple Piquin: (Jose Cuervo Resposado, muddled pineapples, cilantro, habaneros, fresh lime juice, agave nectar, splash of soda). The waitress thought we waited too long and brought me the larger size and no extra cost. Premium tequila and that drink was ON FIRE!
I will be back soon as there were so many options on the menu that I just couldn't fit in my belly!
Based on all the other reviews on Yelp I would have to wholeheartedly agree! Â The only reason we ate here is because this is where my father-in-law chose for his Father's Day dinner.
The decor is lovely both inside and out of the restaurant and had a nice  ambiance.  Definitely LOOKS like a place I would love to diner at more frequently.  The noise level was a bit on the loud side but it is a Mexican restaurant so I expect it to be a little more boisterous.
But the food was a huge disappointment to all 5 of us dining there. Â I had hoped, based on other review, that if I went with the fish tacos I'd be all right. Â 3 of us all ordered the yellowtail tuna tacos, my husband had carne asada and Granda had some sort of stuffed chicken breast dish. Â Everything was BLAND! Â I couldn't believe it - like no seasoning at all?? Â This IS a Mexican restaurant, right?!? Â The yellowtail tuna was cooked perfectly but had no flavor. Â And the mango-pineapple salsa it was supposed to come with was basically scattered across the plate as a garnish, not really enough to help with the flavor of the tacos.
Our tacos didn't come with much in the fried black bean category either, barely a little scoop. Â And the fried shoestring potatoes scattered on the meal as well? Â Not really sure what that was about unless it was a texture/garnish thing.
My husband's carne asada order was on the small size and considering the price I would have expected to get more meat - for the same price we would have gotten a lot more at other restaurants.
But as I said, everything was dull, hardly any flavor. Â We will not be returning here and my father-in-law was so disappointed in his Father's Day meal we took him out again (somewhere else) the following night.
Just ok. Margaritas were sweet - too sweet to even finish the whole thing, which for me is unheard of. Chicken burrito was really good (creamy salsa on the side for dipping was really good). Hubby had the fajitas (which the server raved about) but he thought they were odd. Instead of being served on a hot platter with veggies on the side, meat, veggies and bunch more stuff was churned up "stew style" and served in a stone bowl. Strange - and not very good.
Guacamole, though fresh-made was a disappointment. We asked for "medium/spicy" and there was absolutely NO spice to it whatsoever. The server was nice and very attentive, but plates weren't cleared quickly at all, and eventually started piling up.
I'll probably go back, but not any time soon.
