I've been here three or four times, and have had very different experiences depending on who is working. Â Overall though, I don't think I'll be back. Â
There are a lot of nice things about this place - there's plenty of comfy seating, and the menu is actually pretty diverse for a place that focuses on wine first and food second. Â I've had the cheese plate, a couple of apps, and sandwiches on various trips, and each time the meals have been solid.
On the other hand, there's a lot about this place that rubs me the wrong way. Picking a mid-priced bottle of wine can be tricky for the non-expert. Â The last time I went I chose a bottle, and the waitress said "We don't have that one. Â they had to rebottle it or something because it was messed up. Â I'll give you a couple of minutes to find something else." Â Maybe I'm overly fussy, but I thought it was weak she didn't suggest something similar off the menu to try. Â I always feel a little adrift when picking from a wine menu and the help of an expert can go a long way in making me feel comfortable. Â
At 10:40 (I checked) someone who was not our waitress (manager or owner I think) brought over our check and said "we close at 11." Â Okay fine. Â Sort of tacky, but the dude has places to be I guess. Â So we sat there and finished our wine and chatted and at 10:50 (I checked again) the guy is flipping off some of the rows of lights and sweeping etc., basically letting us know we needed to get the hell out of there. Â Now, I get that you want to get home, and it's annoying when you've just got one table between you and freedom, but we're paying customers, and it you close at 11, shoo us out at 11 if you have to. Â I work in a job where if somebody shows up at 8, and we close at 8, I put on my biggest smile and invite them into the store and try to make some money. Â
Lastly, I thought it was lame the owner had a boo-hoo note scotch-taped inside all of the menus about how he had to charge $1 extra for anyone to use a credit card because the evil CC companies were charging him too much. Â If you need to make more money, train your servers to suggest specials, or dessert, or *gasp* WINE. Â There are a million ways to make an extra buck per customer that don't involve a gauche note in the menu. Â
My verdict: Â Good food, good wine selection, but at times very shaky service and management. Â I'll spend my leisure dollars elsewhere.
3500 Winehaus is a cute wine bar in south city. I really want this place to succeed but I have to agree with Steven B. and others when I say it does have some ways to go before a 5 star review.
First, this may be just a personal preference, being a wine bar is no excuse to have a shitty beer selection. I mean, really shitty. Like strawberry hefieweizen bad. I selected this place for a work happy hour that included some IT men. No surprise, they aren't big wine drinkers. Again, I realize that it is a wine bar, but think of a great wine bars like Sasha's; they have a limited but excellent selection of beers along with the great wine.
Second, the service is just okay. The staff is either way over the top in their presentation or just frazzled and confused.
The Winehaus experience isn't all bad. The patio(s) are awesome. The best in Lindenwood Park by far. The light bites are nice and the decor is lovely. I will definitely return in the future. If this place was a gangly preteen, it won't be that long before Winehaus returns from summer camp a heartthrob.
This place is a great place to grab a glass (or bottle) of wine with friends. Â It's also a romantic spot to take the wife to before dinner. Â They do also offer food, but this review will focus on the wine/atmosphere.
Walking in you have several different selections you can make before you even think about your wine choices. Â What am I referring to? Â There is a couch with a couple of chair immediately inside to your right. Â If that's not your style, there are several seats at the bar. Â If you're there with a group they have several indoor tables. Â In the mood for a night on the patio? Â Well you can choose the front one, which is enclosed from the wrath of mother nature, or sit out back next to the warmth of a fire pit. Â All are great options! Â
I do feel it is worth noting that when sitting out on the back patio we have had slow service a couple of times, which is honestly the only reason I don't make this 5-stars. Â We've never been in a hurry though and just gives us more time to enjoy the wine. Â
Best of all, for the dog lovers out there, they do welcome dogs on their back patio! While we always bring our own water dish, just in case, they have always provided us with a water bowl. Â Plus they usually bring our little guy a treat as well.
Ok so realizing most people don't care about bringing fido to a wine bar...I will move along to the important stuff, the wine selection. Â 3500 Winehaus has a variety of options to select from. Â They have about 15-20 different wines you can select by the glass, or you can opt to select a bottle. Â
If you do go the bottle route they do have options for just about every price point. Â Starting out at the $20-range and heading on upwards with their "reserve" listings like Camus at $90. Â The bottles are broken down into convenient categories such as "bold, spicy reds" or "earthy whites," with a generous description of each wine they offer.
One of the things that I feel 3500 Winehaus does a good job of is ensuring they offer wines from a large variety of growing regions. Â Whether it's France, Italy, California, and even the less heralded regions like New Zealand and South America. Â
So there you have it...a nice, neighborhood wine bar that is practically around the corner from us, that is dog friendly? Â Yeah, we're sold!
Yes I'm that idiot who orders sangria at a wine place....but to my defense, it's hot as hell out so a refreshingly cold beverage sounded great at the time. Unfortunately, it was easily the worst sangria I've had in a long time. I had the white first. Sangria minus the right amount of fruits = bad wine. That was what it tasted like. I decided to not give up on it and ordered a red sangria, which was much better but left a funky chalky taste lingering in my mouth after each sip....it tasted suspiciously like Crystal Light flavor powder....Yeek! I had a drinking companion who also ordered a white and agreed with me that it was just awful.
Service was ok...spotty but no big deal. Big patio with ample seating = big plus.
Morale of the story: if you get sangria here, be warned that they MAY be terrible.
Went to 3500 Winehaus for a friends birthday this past weekend and REALLY enjoyed myself. They have an amazing and knowledgeable staff and a large selection of wines. The ambiance is warm, rustic and welcoming. They have a very cute outdoor patio where they had a fire pit burning outside. I also purchased some of their homemade turtles ($4 for 2 large turtles) which were beyond AMAZING!! I don't think they serve a full menu of meals, but they did have appetizers like pita/hummus, cheese and crackers and little sandwiches that my friend bought as a part of her party reservation. The prices were reasonable considering what type of place it was and wine available by the glass or bottle. I will definitely be going back to this place, I loved it!
Review Source:Great for special events! I held my 30th birthday party at 3500 Winehaus this past weekend and could not have had a better time! The staff was very friendly and easy to work with, both with planning and during the party itself.
Several tables were reserved for my party on the front patio (enclosed and heated during this time of year...a HUGE plus and definitely warm enough for us that night, even with lows in the 30s). Almost all of the tables inside were full, but no one else was on the patio, so it was almost like we had the entire space to ourselves. Our server, Tom, was very attentive for the duration of the party and seemed to be knowledgeable about the wines. He made several great suggestions and both myself and my guests seemed happy with their wine selections. (They also have a full bar for non-wine drinkers.)
The restaurant did not charge a fee to reserve the space, which was great, because it enabled me to provide food for all my guests (20-25 people). I placed my entire food order a week ahead of time (per their recommendation) and 3500 Winehaus took care of everything...All I had to do was show up!
I ordered the small cheese plate, small meat plate, small order of hummus, large order of Napa Valley cheese spread (delicious), and two dozen dollar roll type sandwiches (two varieties: one ham, one turkey). I also ordered a cheesecake and chocolate layer cake through them (from Hank's Cheesecakes), which were both decadent. The food was not only delicious (there was something AMAZING about the cheddar cheese), but was definitely enough food for everyone --They even wrapped up the leftovers at the end of the night so I could take them home with me.
Most of my guests had never been to 3500 Winehaus before attending the party, but I received lots of compliments. Everyone was impressed with both the food and wine and said it was a great place it was for a party. One guest said another friend of hers is having a wedding or baby shower there this upcoming week.
Many people also said that the location was really convenient for them as well. Since the party started kind of early for a Saturday (7pm), I thought my guests might eventually want to head to another bar, but we enjoyed ourselves so much, we stayed until closing. I look forward to returning to 3500 Winehaus in warmer weather (and with a smaller crowd) to enjoy the outdoor patio again.
This is my #1 favorite wine bar in St. Louis. Â
The staff is super friendly - I like to just hang out at the bar with my friends and chat with whoever is working. Â The back patio is fantastic, especially when a fire is going. Â A real gem in South Saint Louis. Â Love it. Â Will be back, over and over.
When I'm looking for something fancy, they have great recommendations. Â But their inexpensive options for happy hour are equally pleasing to the palate.
Tips: Â The Pinot Blanc is a staple of mine over the summer, and the Fontinella cheese is my personal fav.
This is a great place to bring a group of friends, sit back and have some good wine and snacks. Â We stopped by for an after dinner drink the other night. Â It was our second visit here. The place was pretty full, with one large group of 30-something professional types. Â We were glad to see a couple of tables available on the patio out front. Â It's a great spot to enjoy a nice evening, not tucked away in the back with big wall, but open to the sidewalk in the Parisian style that I so adore. Â Okay I don't so adore it, but it's cool and it does remind me a bit of Paris, but with 90% less people walking by. Â Maybe 95%. Â Well, nobody, really.
Our server, Tom was spot on with some recommendations. Â We had four different glasses of wine, all good, and an app called gooey brie. Â This stuff was an awesome accompaniment to our dry reds - sweet and absolutely delicious. Â I wanted to lick the plate, and that doesn't happen very often.
This is a nice wine bar in a great location if you're having dinner on the Hill or thereabouts. Â Definitely recommended.
My boyfriend and I have been meaning to try this place out, and since it is near our 'hood, we were able to walk (only a 20 minute walk). Kudos to local businesses- it's so nice to have great restaurants near us, and more neighborhoods need wine bars like 3500 Winehaus. Karen helped us choose a red wine and she was super friendly and accommodating throughout the evening. We enjoyed a decadent chocolate cake, which they get from Hank's Cheesecakes. It was so delicious. The gooey butter cookies looked amazing too, we'll have to try those next time. The ambiance is nice, but the patio gets a bit loud when it is full. I noticed a previous Yelper commented about the low seating- I agree that adding higher tables and chairs would make it a bit more comfortable. I felt sleepy in the low, reclining patio furniture. Regardless, we'll be back!!
Review Source:3500 Winehaus is a nice local wine bar and a welcomed addition to the neighborhood. They have two outdoor areas, a front patio and a back patio. Both are covered and heated in the cool weather months. They also have a small wine bar inside and a couple of sofas.
Service seems to be the biggest drawback. If you come with a group, it will throw them off. Additionally, they get a little pissy if they seat you outside and you go to the bar for service, even if you are not getting served in a timely manner and table service is inadequate. Also, Don't go hungry. They only have cheese and sausage plates to offer. No upscale cheese and meat choices. Very basic.
My only other complaint is that there are no high top tables. The bar is small and the rest of the seating is low. They would do really well if they added a substantial amount of high tops so that people can mingle a bit. Especially since they don't have much room in the bar.
Overall, it's a nice place, but I will not be there often because I am social and like to mingle in a wine bar and it's not really set up for that.
Winehaus, how could you?! You got rid of the babaganus, the main reason I came back! Instead, almost the entire menu has been replaced by selections from Hank's Cheesecakes. So the lovely Aya Sofia dip has been replaced by something called a "savory cake." That doesn't even sound appetizing. But I ordered the roasted red pepper and spinich (I think) savory cake and it was edible, but not very good. There are 3-4 different flavors of this. Most of the desserts are from Hank's, too, and they don't offer cupcakes anymore. I think this is a big step down.
Review Source:Had a work gathering here. Â Decent ambiance. Â Very limited selection of eats and none of it very exciting. Â However, the happy hour food prices were fairly modest.
Most disappointing was the uninspired selection of wines. Â I am not a big wine guy, but if I go to a wine bar I at least want to be able to try some different things that I might not buy for home without trying first. Â On the whole a very average experience. Â
Thank goodness for the good people I was with. Â Good company makes everything better.
3500 Winehaus is a great addition to South City. It is a nice wine bar with knowledgeable, friendly staff and an extensive menu of wine and snacks. It has a front patio that was completely covered (for the season) that houses heat lamps. The back patio has a fire pit, making this a great place, no matter the season!
One great thing about 3500 Winehaus is that they are DOG FRIENDLY; I cannot wait to bring my pups and enjoy some wine on the patio.
I stopped in this place last night to try it out and loved it! I love wine but am not a connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination. I sat at the bar and the manager let me try a couple of wine recommendations before actually ordering a glass which was nice. I told her what types of wine I liked and she provided. I ended up looooving the wine I had. With my wine I had the Gooey Brie which was absolutely delicious.
The waitstaff all seemed very nice and well-informed about the wines. There is a comfortable seating section (sofas) that I plan on enjoying at some point. I think they have 2 outdoor patios, one front and one out back so I definitely plan on returning in the summer though I'm sure I will be back much sooner. There also seemed to be a mix of ages there which is nice.
I definitely recommend going here for just a night out with your friends or even on your own. Can't wait to go back!
Came here one night on a whim with a bunch of co-workers. Â Apparently they came all the time, but this was my first time.
Our waitress was prompt and came full of recommendations. Â We ordered a bottle of white wine to split with three of us, and asked about some food. Â The table ended up with both hummus and the roasted red pepper spread. Â We got tons of pita refills the instant we ran out as well. Â Love it. There is nothing worse than running out of pita with half of your dip/spread left in the dish. Â Plus the spreads were really good. Â Next time I would like to try their baba ghanoush.
I also really liked how they filled the glasses when people ordered a second glass, they bring out these mini carafes and pour them into the same glass you are already drinking out of. Â Having worked at a restaurant bar that served tons of wine, this idea seemed so awesome to me! Â It is obnoxious washing and polishing wine glasses, but these carafes seem likely easier to clean. Â
We were there on a Saturday night and the place was hopping. Â The enclosed patio was full and people were flowing mostly in, and less out of the place. Â We were not on the patio, but it looked quite warm for being technically outdoors, no one out there seemed too bundled up. Â The atmosphere was great, it was noisy but not loud. Â The lighting, furniture and general decoration was warm and inviting. Â It could probably have been a bit more hip and a bit less Tuscan-esque suburban home styled, since south city supposedly has more young people, but I guess it has to cater to the empty-nesters down here too.
That there are only two bathrooms was surprising to me. Â One for men and one for women. Â You are pumping wine into people and expecting them not to have to use the bathroom? Â
Since the women I work with come here often, I plan on being back soon. Â Would love to sit out on the patio, try a few other glasses of wine, some of the cheese plates, and maintain the company of a good friend. Â This is the perfect place for something like that.
Finally a south city wine bar! I'm so excited that 3500 opened up so I have an alternative to the two Sasha's.
I was hoping that the location would rub off on the atmosphere, and I was right, so far. I went last Friday before dinner and was happy to see a range of ages, and a variety of different kinds of people hanging out over bottles of wine and snacks.
It was super super busy, and the waitstaff were working their butts off. I felt bad for them because they could have used some more help. They were literally speed racing around the place trying to keep up.
We sat in the covered patio area and I'm excited to come back on warm summer nights. We sampled 4 different glasses of wine and found THE BEST Petite Sirah we've ever had. So much so that we ordered some of the same online the next day.
The prices here are more manageable than Sasha's, and while I don't think the wine and beer list is as extensive, it is more than enough for the casual wine drinker.
Met up with a couple friends for what turned out to a very pleasant evening at the wine bar. When it comes to wine I stay pretty much within my own comfort zone(read...not a sophisticated palate). Â Had a nice Merlot and a couple of Cabs for the expected $6-8/glass. Looked like bottles of what I would have ordered ran the usual $27-35.
Food menu is small plates, meats, cheeses, olives-you know, wine stuff munchies. We ordered a pick 3 plate, very good, served with plenty of bread/crackers, etc.
Service was attentive without being hovered over. My favorite kind. Place  filled up kinda all at once between 8-8:30 until all tables were full. Servers were really workin' the room, and as a result service didn't fall off that much.
I did notice everyone out on the patio wearing their coats. Maybe another heater or two would be in order. Just an observation, I didn't actually walk out there to check the temp.
Ambience of the place is just right. Nice mix of indoor/outdoor, couches and tables. I'll be back. Tastes pretty good to me.
Before my last visit I quick tipped this business as a great asset to our neighborhood, I may have jumped the gun. It has a long way to go, but they are still fairly new, so I am sure they are suffering from growing pains.
First thing that we found distracting is the big cooler in the lounge area. Find it a new home, it ruins the ambiance that you have created and it is a good feeling.
Secondly, don't down grade yourself with the Robert Mondavi - Woodbridge table tents. Your serving quality wines, and everyone knows Woodbridge does not fall into that category. Â
The staff is friendly and provides good service, but while we were there they seemed to be over staffed and falling over each other.
They've decorated well for the holidays and I love the heated front patio and the fire pit in the back patio.
I'll revisit and I am sure they'll pull it together so I can upgrade my # of stars.
Came here for a girls night out, and I have to say I find this wine bar absolutely perfect. Â The ambiance is great, the service is stellar, the selection is vast and the quality of the food is excellent. Â Mix that with the totally fair prices, and you have a hell of a little wine bar nestled into an often forgotten section of South City. Â (or at least a section you wouldn't necessarily EXPECT to offer a place like this).
There is a great enclosed patio with heaters for those who want to feel they are outside even in the cold months, a cozy inner room, and oddly enough, it feels nothing like it was once a wag and wash. Â
I highly recommend this place. Â Date night, girls night, hanging with your parents...this place suits it all just fine.
Who'dve thought Wag and Wash could become something so great??
I've lived in this neighborhood my whole life (until 11 months ago) and this is probably one of the best things to happen to it! So many young people have moved back and/or to this neighborhood and so many empty nesters have made a new home in Lindenwood Park and this place totally caters to the group.
I went with some girl friends who agreed this is definitely what the neighborhood needed. There were people our parents' ages there. Kids we went to high school and grade school with. You get the picture.
It was also totally reasonably priced and a fair enough appetizer selection. Definitely going back the next time I'm home.
Most people would argue that St. Louis is a beer town. I tend to agree with them. However, I've found that St. Louis is also a great place for wine lovers. Between the wineries in the county and the wine bars in the city, there are plenty of places to get in touch with your inner wino.
3500 Winehaus combines your favorite neighborhood bar with a touch of class in South City. While there is limited seating inside, 3500 Winehaus offers patio seating out front and in back. The front patio offers a ton of extra seating and even space heaters. The back patio sports a firepit - great for those chilly St. Louis nights in the fall.
The atmosphere is cozy and friendly, much like the service. The kind employees let us sample some of the wine before we committed to a glass or bottle. They have a fantastic menu that includes dozens of red, white, and blush wines for every budget and taste. They even boast a decent selection of beer, whiskey, scotch, and cigars. The decoration is sharp and elegant, but not overdone.
Their small plates complement the wine very nicely. We've ordered a few of the cheese plates and they were quite tasty.
If you're looking for a change of pace in South City, this would be a great place for a date, girl's night, or work place happy hour.
