Wow...I guess I should've been more trusting of others reviews...I LOVE Afghani and Middle Eastern food, and after getting gift certificates from http://Restaurant.com I decided to give this place a try. My best friend warned me that the average rating on Yelp is only 3 stars.... I have to say, that's over rated, I can't give them more then 1...and that's just for decorating the place. Â We went there on a Friday, not only we were the only people there, but half of the appetizers on the menu were not available, I ordered a lamb kabob. Â Before this I have never tried rubber pieces covered in hard charcoal...
Review Source:The restaurant is nice and all, but every time I walk by it's empty. Â The waitress was cute and accomodating, but my food took around an hour to come out and I was only with 1 other person. Â The eggplant and pumpkin dish I ordered was really tasty, and so was the Mahi Mahi, but the time I had to wait for the food made me knock off a star :P Â Also more expensive than most of the other places nearby.
Review Source:I had the vegetarian sampler (spinach, pumpkin, and eggplant with rice) and thought it was nicely done. Â My waitperson was competent and friendly. Â Unlike some others here, I did not get the musical experience, so I can't comment on that. Â 3/5 seems about right. Â No major minuses but nothing outstanding (although the pumpkin seasoning was pleasant)...
Review Source:Oh, I really wanted to like this place. After the Afghan Restaurant closed and turned into some lame bakery I've lamented the dearth of Afghan options in the area. I watched this place since it started construction waiting for the "opening soon" sign to come down. I was disappointed.
Food: In a word: bland. The menu seriously lacks diversity and the flavorings are uninspired. Obviously, Afghan food borrows its subtle seasoning style from it's Persian cousin, but it just didn't execute well. The Kabuli Challow, typically a masterful blend of sweet and savory, tasted like greasy rice with food coloring. It really had the look, but there was no taste. Even the raisins were flavorless! The kebabs were dry, way overcooked. Remember those little rubber bouncy balls you used to play with when you were like 7, well the lamb kebabs reminded me of those. The kadhai gosht (beef), was probably the best dish, odd for an Afghan "Grill." However, even that had serious flaws: they obviously used cuts from the round of the cow, it tasted like a stew my grandmother would have made. This place has one merit: they make their own bread, and it's quite good.
Ambiance: They had "live music." There was a man with a keyboard and a PA, pushing demo buttons and singing Bollywood songs ridiculously off key. I have no Hindustani training, and I could sing better than that. The music was way loud; we chose a seat as far from the PA as possible, and still had to ask them to turn it down. The synthesizer sounds were the pinnacle of sound technology, if this was 1983. I had a Casio too... I'm not impressed. The place was clean and our waitress was nice.
