A bar with no signage --- must be cool, right?
This place is really nice, and definitely a departure from any other bar in the area. Â Dark, gothic furniture, older crowd, Â etc. Â It does smell a bit musty and the music played doesn't really match the vibe, but I can forgive that. Â Definitely an interesting place to take a date OR if you're looking for a calm spot to have a few drinks. Â Maybe I'd also recommend sitting in one of the thrones in the corner so you'll feel important (just kidding....maybe).
Though the auction house is literally down the road from my apartment, I didn't know it was there for the first couple of months after I moved in - from the street it is a scruffy looking red painted place with an American flag in the window hanging between two curtains. I found it looking for bars in the neighborhood on yelp, and my boyfriend didn't believe it was there!
When we finally went, we loved the red velvet decor - the place is themed like a French boudoir and has chandeliers hanging from a high ceiling. It is a little bit dark in there, so is good for an intimate date or small group but difficult for larger groups.
Their cocktails are good - there's a tasty cucumber and gin one I love. Prices are what you'd expect for manhattan - $12/14 a cocktail. They also have a good draft selection and well spirits.
Me and my fiancée' made a small engagement party for friends at The Auction House on Thursday August 29, 2013. We were provided with the table in the center of the back room.  The space was lovely, (Which we knew beforehand as we have been to this bar many times) and just the right size. The purple ambiance, and the art work make the room feel festive.
Adam, the bar tender provided excellent service in the form of great drinks with a disarming smile and can do attitude.
We would like to thank "The Auction House" as the party was a success. We highly recommend "The Auction House"

Unique place - 2-room antiquey lounge that feels like it's from another era! Â Velvet couches, candlelight and drinks - what a combo!
Great and cozy place to grab a drink with a friend or date. Â It gets very crowded - so I wouldn't recommend for big groups. Â Get there early for a seat.
Nondescript, unmarked building from the outside yields a velvet-and-leather-am-I-in-a-game-of-Clue? vibe on the inside. Seating is available at the 2 bars and in velvet chairs clustered in group of 2 and 4 around small tables. I met an old friend to catch up after months of not seeing each other, and we had no problem at all hearing each other over the music and other patrons, and yet it was just loud enough to lend anonymity. Would also be a great place for a date! Inventive cocktail list.
Review Source:Very red velvet. Lol. Nice vibe. Went with 2 of my friends. Drinks reasonably priced. Strong but not overwhelming. Could easily  see this being a good date spot as there is ton of cozy seating. Can hear your friends voices over the music, that's always a plus, especially with catching up on your friends' stories.
Review Source:Was looking for a place called The Auction House. Stare at my iPhone map, look up at buildings for signage. Walk up a few blocks. Nope. Walk back a few blocks. and Ohh, lookie here, got it. Step into The Auction House and you will find a cross between old world charm and sexy prohibition era speakeasy.
The Auction House is unique and unlike many of the Upper East Side bar scene. You won't find Animal House being filmed here. You won't find the cast of Pride and Prejudice. What you will find is small groups of 4's maybe 2's, wanting some quiet snuggle time with their significant others... at least that is what we found. The Auction house's decor is elegant but also a touch of creepy- cue, the painting with a ripped head. Find a spot on one of the couches and sit. You'll quickly realize that if you want drinks, you should head to the bar and order. No problem. We didn't want to be bothered anyway. I could see a date working out perfectly- it's dimly lit, beautiful with candlelight, red tones to set the mood, plush seating and you don't have to scream over the music. It's a fun, sexy but low-key hang out lounge.
Final tips:
Drinks are decently priced. No Food. Remember to look at the hours of operation and time it perfectly. It does get packed after 9ish pm.
This place has a speakeasy feel to it... it's unmarked, dark, and ornately decorated. The drinks were solid but nothing amazing. The ingredients/flavors weren't as clean and crisp as I would have liked but they were still tasty.
Service was good, albeit a little slow because I think there was only one or two bartenders in the whole place.
This is a good spot for post-dinner drinks or a weeknight date. Not ideal for big groups, IMO but is good for getting cozy on a couch with one or two other people.
It has a loungier, more retro feeling than other neighborhood bars. Â The decor is vintage--velvety couches, decorative mirrors, and nude paintings. Â Good drink menu. Â Great 90s music mix when I was there. Â But no food! Â And the hockey game playing on the TV did not fit the scene at all.
Review Source:I walked in here but I didn't get married to anyone like the reviewer before me so....WTF?!?! Â Seriously though, this place is pretty chill. Â It has an old money kinda vibe but with some edge. Â It doesn't really strike me as a speak easy since it's basically a store front but who cares, quit being a snobby new yorker!
Review Source:This place stands out in the neighborhood because it's not a frat bar/ sports bar--not that there's anything wrong with that.:)
The Auction house is a loungy place with a lot of velvet and exposed brick. Â It's reasonably quiet and really nice and homey. Â
Haven't tried any of the food, but it's a nice place to get a drink
Went there last night for a late night drink around 1am
The place was pretty empty just a few people at the bar.
Sat down at the bar right in front of where the bartender was standing. Once he finally turned around he helped a couple people that had been sitting, went back to his cell phone, passed by us a couple more times and then took notice of us.
First thing he said was "you can't wear a hat here" dude are you kidding on a Sunday night at 1am when the place is empty?? I understand some places carry dress code and what not but if he hasn't said it like a pretentious asshole it would have been received more willingly.
Whatever moving on, I wanted to open a tab so I gave him my card then he asked for my I.D so I told him I don't have one with me so he said that I can't keep a tab if I don't have one and closed me up, He came back threw down the card and receipt and said "not tryin to be a gerk but don't admit to the bartender you don't have ID, cause I should take that drink away from you." I've been working in bars for 7 years I understand this rule, it's simply comes down to the way he spoke to us. Rude, stuck up, pompous
The place is aesthetically awesome
Plays great music
Pretentious balding bartender sucks.
How have I not reviewed Auction House?
I've been going here for a few years, and love the atmosphere - from the seating, to the painting on the walls, to the music selection. It definitely stands apart from other UES bars, complete with nude paintings on the wall. Other pluses are $5-$6 draft beers and moderately priced cocktails. There's a (non-working) fireplace and plush victorian couches.
The Auction House is 25 and up, and don't bring your little sister because they ID pretty consistently. The place gets PACKED on weekend nights after 9pm or so. There really aren't any good places to stand without being constantly bumped into, so its best to go early (or very late) and get a seat.
I love this place! Â On a quiet side street with a less than ideal bar scene, this place offers something completely different that most of the UES. Â The ambiance is great (think red velvet, chandeliers, exposed brick) and the service is on point. Â Given the great vibe, the prices are great. Â If this place was downtown drinks would be in the $18 range but at Auction House you will always pay less than $10, even for their signature cocktails. Â
Two things holding it back from five stars:
It had gotten a C rating from the health department, which is troubling particularly since they don't serve any food. Â It appears that they got their act together and got an A on the next cycle of reviews, but I still have lingering doubts.
My friend is 24 and was out with her boyfriend and his friends in their late 20s/early 30s. Â They would not let her in because they want to keep it a late 20s + bar. Â I understand the desire to keep it from turning into a fratty post college hang out, but to reject a mature 24 year old out with a group of older people seems pretty over the top. Â I've heard these rules only apply on Friday and Saturday.
The high ceilings, candlelight, velvety chairs and huge naked lady portraits put the Auction House somewhere between the Adams Family and the home of Larry Flynt. Â Until about midnight it has a relaxed, sexy vibe that gives you a bit of the heebie geebies. Â Once it fills up with chatty patrons on a busy weekend night it loses a bit of its charm and a group of anxious people will hover over you like vultures as soon as you show signs of leaving.
One cocktail will set you back about $14, but they are delicious.
"For being on the Upper East Side" the Auction House is cool. Â "Overall," it's barley okay... Â we stood because there are not a lot of sofas or chairs, but it was not that big of a deal. Â I guess you need to get there early if you want a seat. Â The specialty cocktails were "okay" nothing to write home about. Â One of my drinks was so sugary my glass was sticky, gross, we we left after that. The music was loud, but that only made it hard to communicate. Â
Come to think of it, I'm  really sure what the point of the Auction House is.... the drinks are designed to sip, yet you can't sit because seating is limited.  It's not a dance hall, yet the music is loud...
Anyway, I won't be back unless someone else suggests it.
Not many things remind me about my ex-wife and I don't typically treat those things that do nicely. The Auction House induced in me a sort of a yin and yang, love/hate effect (mostly hate)--just like my ex. Permit me to first share the low hanging fruit with you. Ambience is superb if you are into the dark Victorian lounge, sexy vibe scene as I am (yin). But the music is devastatingly mismatched (yang). I love The Beatles but there's no place for the bubble gum, teeny-bopper screaming, early Beatle catalogue in these otherwise splendidly seductive rooms. If you must go retro then Enigma is best suited. Or if you must play The Beatles then perhaps play Something; get my drift?
The hose special drinks read delicious. Cucumber has been overdone as of late but I can't seem to get enough of it. Bourbon too is dangerously close to once again becoming passé. But since I continue to crave both The Auction House's offerings were a must order for my date and me (yin). Since there was not wait staff to be found I assumed self service was the MO despite The Auction House's Upper East Side setting (yang). Our eagerness to consume our libations was quickly repelled by the poorly mixed drinks. If a mixologist is whom you seek look elsewhere (yang). Too bad because the ambiance is otherwise spectacular.
Great find on the Upper east side, came in around 830 on a thursday and managed to snag the last table. Only two bartenders working for both sides of the bar, one exclaimed that he was new and still learning the ropes.
Overall I liked the vibe, plush seats, high ceilings, fancy mirrors and paintings, low light. Great place to grab some drinks and chat...on a normal night. Around 930 some online company came in for their holiday party and turned the scene into a loud drunk one. There are tons of bars in the area..why did they have to ruin the ambience of this place. Overall nice bar, nice drinks and decently priced.
Ill bump it up a star when I can come back and have my drinks in peace without being bothered by drunk creepy girls and guys.
3.5 stars
Came here to cap of a fun Saturday evening with Lama. Â I had heard about Auction House and wanted to check it out for a while. Â
After walking through door, Â I felt like I had just walked into a 1920's Parisian bordello: red velvet, dimly lit chandeliers, old paintings (of scantily clad-nude women). Â Cocktails were good and strong!
It was quite crowded, being late Saturday and all...I was really hoping for more of a Raines Law Room type vibe. Â I'll come back on a weeknight sometime and i'm pretty sure I'll go up to 4 stars.
So after 67 Orange, Todd, duly tipsy, said "do you want a drink in the UES?" Â I said yup!
We grabbed a cab (I told you, he was tipsy) and headed to Auction House-Todd had wanted to try it for a while. Â
With a very prohibition theme, it supposedly allows only patrons 25 and over in through the door. Â I can believe that.
Inside, there are beautiful boys (no, not beer goggles) dressed to the nines in 3 piece suits and the shoes, watches, and ties dreams are made of.
The cocktails are perfectly concocted, but they make a killer gin and tonic. Â Easy right? No, lots of places make an icky gin tonic-these guys are good.
We enjoyed our 2 hour respite on the couch in Auction House, and I so can't wait to go back. Â Yes, the UES has it going on.
Dear Insecure Bartender,
When a customer asks if you have drinks besides what's on the menu, do not take that as an attack on your abilities to make drinks. Snarkily (and obviously defensively, I might add) responding, "We make a whole bunch of other drinks, but that menu is if you can't think for yourself," is not the way to keep a customer. Lose the attitude.
A pity because I've had a pleasant time here before - the fireplace and couches make it really great for a date or small group. Too bad the service had to ruin it.
Lovely gothic victorian decor - you enter a different time period when you arrive. Â Plush red velvet elaborate couches, gold plated and crystal chandeliers, tin ceiling, cozy nooks. Â Could be an OK first date spot, but it's not that refined of a choice...
They keep the lights so low for a reason... they have a C rating!!! There is also a terrible smell depending on which "nook" you are in. Â The bartenders are also generally horrible, as many of our drinks were so poorly mixed we left them full.
When I imagine the perfect venue for a romantic, relaxing, or mysterious evening this is the place. When I think of a lounge to put you in the sexy mood, this is it. Everyone looks good in candlelight and that is the effect auction house gives. Low lights, old fashion victorian style couches, dark red walls, old paintings, depicting scandally clad maidans (or nude beauties) . I love the theme.
I ordered the spring sensation, which contains cucumber, st. Germain, and ginger I believe. It was delicious. I love st. Germain.
We started early so we got the best seat in the place. Nice and cozy. It started off very intimidate but slowly became crowded. By that time we were so happy to have our spot and not be bothered by people walking over us.
This lounge is awesome. I loved it.
Yes Auction is 25 and up but they will also turn you away if you are wearing any kind of fur...true story. My friend and I stopped by last weekend she was a wearing fur coat, it was fake mind you. We were not allowed to step foot inside because the bouncer said the owner was watching on the screen and that he'd be in trouble if he let anyone in with fur. How preposterous. We stood there pleading like kids in a candy store to be let in, repeatedly saying that the fur was fake. I've told this story to lots of my friends and they can't help but laugh over the ridicule we endured.
The reason I'm giving 2 stars is if you can get over the pretentiousness of the owner that the interior is worth seeing. They also get props for not being another dive/sports bar in the UES. Personally though I don't see myself going back after that incident and hope that fellow yelpers take this into consideration before stepping foot inside.
Showed up here at 7:30 pm on a Tuesday night, just as the bartender was opening up the ancient-looking security gate. Don't bother showing up earlier, or you'll be staring at the gate.
Auction House is a most excellent bar--especially for dates--in a quiet corner of the UES. Two separate rooms allow for privacy and couch-snuggling (I suppose) as the night rolls on. The hushed red interior tones set the mood but keep a balance with a more casual hangout.
They had decent beers on tap, including Harpoon IPA and UFO Hefeweizen. But I'm thinking you'll want to try a cocktail here, which I, lamentably, did not.
It was dead when we visited this place but in a way that was a good thing for us. Because there were plenty of places to sit but we sat at the bar. Had a great conversation with the bartender who was very friendly.
Loved the old timey french brothel look to the place and enjoyed the music being played. All in all I had a great time here and will definitely be on the list of places to have a drink at during my next visit to the Big Apple.
