Stopped in here last night for carry out and I was very unimpressed with the food quality. We ordered Orange tofu w/ brown rice and edamame which came with a free egg roll. The orange sauce was watery and almost flavorless and the tofu was undercooked as was the brown rice. The edamame wasn't the best either. I couldn't tell if it was  poor quality or just not cooked properly. The girl who took our order was super friendly and it should be noted that if this review was based solely on service it would be 5 stars.
Review Source:One of those under the radar type of restaurants.
Doesn't open until after noon during the weekday?
I used to work in Lakeview and I thought that was weird.
The food was really nice.
My best friend and I had the appetizers and shared the Hot Shiang Yu Chicken with beef fried rice.
The portion sizes were bigger than normal places.
I loved our waiter.
She was bubbly and attentive even though there were only about 3 of us seated in a huge restaurant.
If I'm ever in the mood for chinese and a quiet atomsphere, I'm coming to the Bamboo Garden.
Hmmmm... Not too shabby. I was in the mood for some chinese take out and tried the mooshu beef here with korean seafood pancakes. Ok, the korean pancakes I shoulda already known it could be bad. It was surely a gamble and it was edible but I would not get that again. I like mine a little thinner and crisp, plus that's also how I make mine at home too and these were very thick, fluffy and eggy. There were good amounts of veggies and shrimp and scallop in it but I wasn't into these. Oh well. I received a free eggroll with my order and it's your typical low quality egg roll in a thick shell with lots of filler type veggies. I'm not a fan but non-asians might like it.
My mooshu beef- I requested no beansprouts and glad they listened. It's also different than what I'm use to. The veggies were cut chunkier and zucchini was in it which was a first for me with mooshu but I really enjoyed this, especially cuz the beef was tender. I'd order this again for sure. Plus they give you plenty of pancakes to wrap it up in, along with plenty of sauce and a chili paste that was tasty and not sambal nor siracha.
They're kinda on the slow side here so I'll take that into account next time.. I will be back for more mooshu and try general chow shrimp. I hope it's good cuz who doesn't like deep fried goodies in a savory sauce atop rice??? Yum! I'm leery about the noodles cuz I'm picky but I'm curious and will have to give that a shot too when I'm buzzed, high or something cuz if I'm disappointed I'll go into a murderous rage. nah I'm joking of course, I don't do drugs but I will be mad!
They won't win style awards for their interiors, but this is a decent Chinese restaurant in a neighborhood with some awful ones. Â You'll either like this place or poo-poo it; there is no middle ground. Â My suggestion is to give it a try and have an open mind; this isn't Chinatown. Â My fave is the sesame chicken. Â I'm not sure huge balls of chicken are true Chinese cuisine, but it's a nice change from others I've tried. Â I like how unassuming the place is, and it's become a guilty pleasure for a few friends of mine. Â Prepare yourself: the service is attentive and polite, but the food takes a while to leave the kitchen. Â I'd also question the taste of their eggrolls and some other dishes I've tried. Â As I wrote earlier, the neighborhood lacks anything better.
Review Source:I can't believe all of the positive reviews about Bamboo Garden. It is hard to find a good Chinese place, and this is definitely not the one. I recommend to keep searching. We took one bite and immediately threw it all away, a whole $40.00 order. Â The Sesame Chicken sauce looked like nothing I had ever seen before, and it was hard to even tell what our chicken fried rice was. Save your money
Review Source:A. Definitely the best Chinese restaurant outside of Chinatown (and Wok Out which is now closed) in Chicago. Moving from the east coast, I was used to a certain style I guess, I mean Chinese is Chinese but Boston's Chinese definitely trumps Chicago Chinese. With that being sad, I always dread when a friend wants it so you can only imagine how excited I was when my friend wanted it on New Years Day. After calling about 5 Chinese places around his place and finding out all of them were closing, we settled on Bamboo Garden which is open an hour more than most in the area.
They would not let us sit because it was close to closing so we opted to take it back to his place. I ordered the Teriyaki Chicken spicy. Bonus, they always ask if you want it spicy which is great for a spice monster like myself. My friend ordered Chicken with Asparagus. Mine was delicious, just the right amount of flavor, the chicken was nice (not like some Chinese places which make you question if its chicken or dog), and the portion was huge. We also got a side of crab Rangoon which might be the best I've had in the city.
The food was so good I went back last night to get dinner. Not only did my Hunan Beef taste amazing, but it was enough for dinner and lunch the next day. If I'm not in Chinatown I will refuse to eat Chinese unless it is from here. The price is perfect too!
A friend and I ended up here for dinner because the restaurant where we had meant to dine had unexpectedly closed down (what happened to Duck Walk on Belmont?!) and it was too cold/we were too hungry to wander far. The restaurant states that it is "fine dining Chinese" and the space is actually pretty nicely set up. The service was friendly but EXTREMELY SLOW; it took our food close to 30min to come out, even though we were the only party in the restaurant. As for the food...hm. We had the crab rangoon and vegetable eggrolls to start, and then the sesame tofu and beef with mushrooms, pea pods, and bamboo shoots. Huge portions, and not as oily as some places I've tried. But the overall taste was pretty bland and...not good. Haha. Would not return.
The best part of the evening was that we were able to sit for 2.5 hours to catch up without feeling any pressure at all to leave, as the place remained virtually empty the entire time. Not the best sign...
You call this Chinese Food??!! totally a joke. I was in a sesame chicken mood, the crispy chicken with sweet and sour sauce...was I looking for. The waiting was short, 15 mins! I asked what's the sub for white rice, I had steam noodle. The chickens are huge pieces but the sauce is not the right kind at all... sweet and tastes like peanut butter! I was so disappointed and will never come back again! Very sad to find a Chinese food restaurant like this I my neighbor
Review Source:Not impressed.
They use the standard low quality Chinese take out strategy of "large portions to cover up  our lack of flavor".
The free egg roll with the order over a certain amount tasted like deep fried dirt. So if they offer you that, feed it to your dog.
Their meat quality is on par with taco bell so be prepared for that.
At least they don't mess up white rice.
My friend and I were on Belmont window-shopping around lunch time and we needed to eat quickly then go off to our class. Â I saw Bamboo Garden across the street and thought that even if it sucked, at least it would be fast. Â There was no one in there, but the lady was very friendly. Â I typically judge a chinese place by their beef chow fun. Â This was the first place that offered to make it spicy so my friend got it spicy and I got it plain. Â It was one of the most delicious beef chow fun dishes I've ever had. Â I was amazed and the fact that noodle were slightly pan crisped too was a pleasant surprise. Â I recommend going here if you want good chinese food cheap and fast. Â I can't speak for carry-out, but the food here is delicious. Â I will definitely be coming here again if I'm in the area.
Review Source:I'm glad some bad carry-out customer service finally made me stop trying to like this place just because its right by my apt. Now that i can see clearly (even though I did have to rub my eyes a bit when I saw it had over 3 stars) I can share the truth.
-The entrees are just plain bland and when there is flavor it tastes off
-My friend said her pork definitely wasn't fresh.
-The appetizers are the only thing with potential, but they must change the frying oil annually because they have a gross under-taste.
ahh, i feel much better now.
We had dinner here last night because the place we planned to go to was packed. Â I don't know that I ever would have made a trip to come here, but it was an excellent place to have dinner. Â
I was a little worried about how empty it was on a Friday night, but the food was good and cheap so I don't know why they didn't have more dinners.
As other people have mentioned there isn't much ambiance. Â But the place was clean, had some nice bamboo plants, and some cute paintings, so I think it was fine.
The service was very good. Â And we were an obnoxious group because we were starving and brought 2 bottles of mixed drinks to dinner with us. Â (It is BYOB!) Â They were polite, friendly, refilled our water glasses frequently, and brought out the food quickly. Â What more could you ask for?
We ordered the appetizer platter for 4 people, and I thought it was a good deal. Â For about $13 we got 4 crab rangoon, 4 pot stickers, 4 wontons, 4 of another thing that was amazing but I have no clue what it was, and 4 halves of eggrolls. Â The appetizers were all excellent. Â The platter was an excellent choice!
For my entree I had yellow curry chicken. Â I thought it would be like the Thai dish of the same name (sine I've never seen this dish on other Chinese menus), however it was not at all like a Thai curry. Â It wasn't soupy. Â However it tasted good and had lots of veggies in it. Â So I thought it was a good choice. Â I also got to try the Chicken with Broccoli, and that dish was excellent!
It was a very good, very large meal for not much money. Â I think we easily could have shared 3 entrees among 4 people, but we still finished all of the food on the table anyway.
NOM!NOM!NOM!
OOOO-MMM-GEEE! Who doesn't like good eats on a dime? (you there in the back, put your hand down, nobody asked you!)
I had their vegetable soup - super tasty, inexpensive, and jam packed with delectable veggies!
I think the service was better than most 5-star restaurants I've been to (okay, slightly exaggerated, but they are attentive without being over-bearing).
This is such a little neat spot to grab a bite to eat amongst the hustle and bustle of Clark street.
Meow! :)
I'm not sure how the service is when you dine in, but carry out service was horrible! I was the only person in there when I placed my order to go, yet it took 30 minutes and a couple seated for dining in got their appetizers before I got my order! There was also an order that was called in that was ready before mine, so not a fan of carry out service at all.
The food was ok, not much to write home about. The shrimp fried rice was good, but it had too much fried egg for my liking. It should have been labeled vegetable fried rice with the option to add shrimp. If I lived in the area I might return but I'll take a pass because I don't want to waste so much time waiting on a to-go order, especially when I'm the first one there.
Overall, I'll stick to ordering Chinese when I'm at work since I can get better from Chinatown than what I waited a half hour for.
Hey hey! Â I think I found my new Chinese delivery place! Â We tested out Bamboo Garden by ordering all our regular items, and it hit the spot and our expectations. Â The chicken fried rice was really good, nice and egg-y, with big chunks of quality chicken. Â The egg rolls were solid - only complaint there is they give you a cup of their own sweet and sour sauce, and I happen to prefer the yellow stuff in the packets. Â Mu Shu Pork was delicious - that was the BF's order, and I may be a Mu Shu convert from now on. Â My order, the BBQ Pork Egg Foo Young, was very tasty, although nothing like the Egg Foo Young I'm used to. Â Instead of a brown gravy, it was more of a sweet and sour sauce. Â The BBQ pork in it was fantastic and flavorful - I'd recommend getting that with at least one dish.
Looks like unless I'm really craving a more traditional egg foo young, I'll be back at Bamboo Garden!!
I'm not usually one for posting negative reviews after only one experience--which is why I've generally posted positive reviews. However, my experience with Bamboo Garden was just awful. Let me note, the staff seemed friendly enough and my order came out very prompty... the two stars are for that alone. The food was terrible.
I decided to go in on a whim because I had seen a menu in my apartment building and noticed that it was very reasonably priced and they offered a number of vegetarian options. I ordered the sesame tofu with broccoli, rice, and an order of egg rolls. The egg rolls were literally so awful and soggy that I couldn't even finish the first one. The sauce that the tofu was served in was like a thick gooey mess--and there were only two tiny pieces of broccoli. The best part of my meal was the plain, white rice. Needless to say, it was not a pleasant meal.
The prices are tempting... but I'd think twice if I were you.
I LOVE this place so much that I felt the need to write review even though I moved to NYC a couple months ago! Mostly because I've been craving it before and since I left.
The eggrolls are the BEST.
The peking chicken is AMAZING. And sadly, I've never been able to find the dish anywhere else.
It always surprises me how dead this place is, but as Bunny said, this place is totally underrated. The deadness can be a perk at times though; my friend(s) and I don't get such strange looks for our ridiculous conversations.
I don't think I've ever been disappointed with the food, the prices or the service (the woman whose name I never got [!] is the nicest person ever). It's a wonderful little gem in a neighbourhood that used to be my home away from home. I have a lot of good memories inside and outside of Bamboo Garden.
I have two words for this place ....
Sizzling. Hot.
As in Sizzling Rice soup and Hot & Sour soup.
The sizzling rice soup comes with shimp, scallops and chicken and they add the sizzling rice at your table for "fragrant flavor." Â It arrived in a HUGE bowl and had a great flavor.
The Hot & Sour soup ... I could bathe in. I believe they use white pepper for seasoning but once I started eating it, I didn't care what was in it.
They have the standard chinese selection but what stands out for me is the freshness. Nothing I've had here has that heavy greasy feel.
I'm definitely going back to try some more.
Reading over some of the other reviews ..... I am struck by the numerous  ......"its my favorite Chinese place in town" ......  and ........
"the food sucks" .....reviews for the same small, straightforward, neighborhood Asian joint.
I am definitely a huge fan of this place.
I am amazed by the simple Wonton Soup ($2 for single, $3.50 for double). Â The broth is delicate and clear but still very flavorful. Â The vegetable remain crisp despite being submerged in hot liquid.
My favorite entree is the Chicken wEgg Plant ($9). Â The sauce is unbelievably flavorful with a strong garlicky / gingery taste. Â Full of chicken with eggplant cooked so that it does not turn soggy. Â
[Tip: Â if you are ordering delivery, tell them you have a coupon for a free eggroll. Â As long as your order is over $12 they will give it to you whether you have a coupon or not.]
I have also tried the Pepper Steak ($8.50), the Scallops wPeapod ($10.5), and the Sesame Chicken ($8). Â The food is consistently beyond good and very very flavorful. Â
I will also confirm that the portions are HUGE. Â
One unsolved mystery is that the place is virtually deserted whenever I stop by to pick up my food. Â I am usually picking food up after work between 7pm and 8pm and I have never seen more than 2 tables with people eating.
My advice is to do what I did. Â Order the Chinese dish or two that you are the most familiar with and order most often. Â Taste their version and I am willing to bet its going to be as or more flavorful than you ever had.
the decor at Bamboo Garden is kinda dated... it has a good view though..
the food is standard chinese fare which taste quite decent..
i ordered the "ma po tofu" which happens to be a rare menu item nowadays. the waitress asked if i want it just spicy or very spicy. i said just spicy but i guess the kitchen might got it wrong cause its very spicy...
other than that the portion is big and the crab ragoon is tasty. and the service is attentive.
i would come back to try some other items..
Simply OK. We had delivery from here and the food arrived hot and on-time. Â The portions were huge and the food tasted fresh. Â We shared an order of the pork mooshu (does this mean I will get swine flu?) and the general chow chicken. Â Yes, I said general "chow" because that it what is called on the menu. Â Hmm, tastes just like general tso. Â Very spicy. Â I did end up digging in for seconds and then thirds and there was still plenty of food leftover. Â We got free crab rangoons which were a little bit light on the crab side but the rangoon part tasted good. Â Probably won't order from here very often, but I can never turn down Chinese food for dinner. Â The fortune cookie provided tasted better then most!
Review Source:This is by far the best Chinese food in the city. Bamboo Garden offers generous portions, great service, and delicious food. I love the hunan chicken as well as the mongolian beef. The egg drop soup and their crab rangoon is also amazing.
The only thing is, I don't really like their egg rolls. Everything else is absolutely awesome though! I've been a fan of Bamboo Garden since I moved here. If you like good Chinese food, you must order from this place! I'd order from them every night if I could afford to!
You know a Chinese place is pretty damn good when you take a 6'7", 400lb man in for lunch and he can't even finish is portion of food! Â Yeah the portions are that big!
My best friend in the whole wide world came to town this weekend and we wanted a quick and affordable lunch. Â Bamboo Garden did the trick. Â It's not the best Chinese food I've ever eaten but it's huge portions and its cheap!
We ordered shrimp fried rice, some sort of thin noodle spicy chicken dish and an order of crab rangoon. Â I normally judge all my Chinese restaurants by there crab rangoon and these crab rangoons were lacking in taste. Â I was a wee bit disappointed but the shrimp fried rice made up for it. Â It was huge heaping portion and even for two more lunches. Like I said my friend couldn't even finish his whole meal and that's really saying something.
The space is small and bare. Â But they do make up for it in charm. Â Fresh flowers are on each table (we had beautiful red roses) and bright and lively plants are also found throughout the restaurant. Â The floors and tables are clean and the food comes out hot and nicely plated.
If you are looking for huge portions and cheap fare. Â This is a great place but if you are wanting amazing, mind blowing Chinese food I would go else where.
Tired and hungry after too much wandering around on a recent trip to Chicago, we stumbled into Bamboo Garden. Usually when I am tired I'll just eat anything, and I never expect the places I find by surprise to be that great. Not so with Bamboo Garden! This place was the best Chinese food I'd had in a long long time. We ordered the steamed dumplings, which were very good and came with a vinegar-y sauce, as they should. For the main course we had the Kung Pao Beef. Oh boy was it great! The beef was a little crispy around the edges and tasted  like it had been seared in spices on the pan. The sauce was delicious and slightly sweet, and the crispy noodles underneath were a great complement. The lemon chicken was delicious as well, tender big pieces of chicken with a crispy coating that was not greasy, and a really nice thick lemon sauce.
We really enjoyed this place. As a mother of two, I would definitely bring my children here! It's quiet and somewhat empty (don't people know about it?). I would feel relaxed knowing that my kids weren't being noisy in a crowded place, which Bamboo Garden eventually will become.
4 stars for spicy Chinese food that makes me sweat at a low low price. Â 5.50 will buy you a huge portion of some Chinese goodness, white rice and an egg roll. Â I usually go with the Hunan chicken which is super spicy. It's filled with plenty of veggies like broccoli, celery and water chestnuts. Â Last week I tried the curry chicken and it was smokey and tasty. Â Why won't this place give me more than one packet of the hot mustard? Why do you torture me so, I just want one extra packet. Â I need to start making this stuff in my basement. Â I'll sell it on the black market.
Review Source:I stopped in on the way home the other day. I was in the mood for appetizers so I ordered egg rolls and chicken pot stickers to go. I only had to wait about 10 minutes, which was awesome. I was excited to get home and eat because I had been craving Chinese and read some good reviews. The egg rolls were huge! But unfortunately they were a little soggy, maybe they went soggy on the walk home...I dunno. All in all they tasted pretty good and were still hot when I got back to my apartment. The chicken potstickers were a little greasy, but not too greasy as to be inedible. They tasted okay, but were just okay. The food is cheap and fast, so that's a plus in my book. Â I'll definitely stop in another time I'm walking by, hungry, and craving Chinese.
Review Source:If I could give a negative review, this is it. Â This was the worst Chinese restaurant experience that I have ever had.
We ordered three things - sizzling rice soup, hot appetizer platter, and a bbq pork egg foo young.
The sizzling rice for the soup was brown - I'm sorry but authentic sizzling rice is white and the soup was mediocre - probably the best thing about the whole meal.
The appetizers felt like a rip off. Â The wontons lacked anything except for fried dough. Â The egg rolls were cut in half and they claimed to have chicken in them except that I didn't taste any. Â The crab rangoon - (I don't like crab rangoon and this one reminded me why I shouldn't have ordered it in the first place) was mostly cream cheese - maybe I saw some imitation crab in there. Â The shrimp toast was just greasy beyond belief and I could taste the MSG in it. Â Just disappointing and disgusting.
But not even the worst part - now, egg foo young is supposed to be fried as a patty - with egg, vegies, onions and meat. Â This dish came out like a scrambled omelette drowning in sweet gravy. Â My friend took one bite and was disappointed. Â She requested for the dish to be sent back and they informed us that if we did that, we'd have to pay for a new dish.
Service was disappointing - we had to get up once to get their attention and it took multiple tries to get their attention. Â Disappointing overall experience. Â I will not make the mistake of coming back again. Â I don't think that Valerie S should be criticized for not liking this place. Â As for FR and Yeliz - you need some real Chinese food because this is so far from it.
My favorite Chinese restaurant in Chicago! Â They were closed for few weeks to renovate their kitchen. Â (I believe they changed their phone number) They reopened a week or two ago. Â I am a fan of their ma-pao tofu. Â It is delicious. Â They have a lunch special for 4.95 (I think that's the price). Â I know that everyone has a different taste when it comes to food but for me this is the best Chinese restaurant in town!
