Bar Code is clean, spacious, and clearly popular with the white collar crowd.
THE GOOD: Clean space and pretty tasty food. The spinach and artichoke dip was addicting, and I like that they had crispy pita slices for dipping.
THE BAD: This place feels a little sleazy. The music was way too loud for happy hour. I think I would have added another star if they'd just turned off the trashy colored neon florescents "highlighting" everything from the walls to behind the bar; other than that, the decor was sleek. Also, our service was notably poor. Our server was unsmiling, inattentive, and generally took forever to follow up. Maybe they were understaffed?
THE BOTTOM LINE: Nothing too horrible is going on here and the food I had was tasty; the food I saw being delivered to tablemates and others in the restaurant seemed fresh and interesting. It seems like a popular place, but I'm not sure what kind of vibe they're going for...
Ordering drinks like it was nothing until the bill came out. Lesson learned.. Drinks weren't strong enough to get me drunk but expensive enough to hurt my pockets. Music is very up beat so thats good. However, theres always too much lights. Bartenders don't seem like they want to be there. If I had to go back, I would get drunk first then go for the dancing.
Review Source:Avoid. This place reeks of vomit and they try to conceal it with what smells like coffee? Â The bartenders are so rude, you're job is to serve me. If you don't like it get another job. I was here last night and I got pounded on by 5 hippos. After about 2 minutes of getting beaten up by these wild beasts they get kicked out. And thats it! I'm pretty sure that assaulting someone involves a ride in a cop car. I wasn't able to press any charges and now today I have bruised ribs and bumps on my head. How am I supposed to come here and feel safe? The security team did not fulfill their duties in my opinion. I asked to speak to managers, but nothing. They brushed me off. I'll make sure I let all my friends know to never come here again.
Review Source:If you're looking for a review about the drinks and the all-around good times had at this establishment I'll stop you right here and say - it was fine. Â Had a jack and ginger and an average turkey burger.
What this review is about is the management and their disregard for what most bar/restaurants call a "Health Code". Â I'll save you additional reading time and suggest reading Mike D.'s elegant reprise of the incident in question and just say that I could NEVER ORDER FOOD at a restaurant that openly resells food that was already delivered to a patron. Â Who knows what other fun health code violations they decide to ignore and I am sincerely sorry if you had sliders on the evening my group of friends did - two of those being Mike D. and myself.
Come for the drinks... maybe.
Stay for the salmonella...
I've been here several times for dinner and drinks. I have never had a problem with management or bad service. The music does get very loud if you eat past 9:00PM on a weekend night, but I didn't necessarily find that unenjoyable. I liked that once we finished with dinner, we could move the party over to the dance floor! The food has always been great - very good burger and fries!
Review Source:I've been here several times before but never risked ordering food. Â I respect the place for what it is...lets just leave it at that.
Cliffnotes:
- rude management
- planned to resell food already brought out to us
Stopped by here to have a few drinks and a quick dinner with some friends from out of town. Â I ask if its possible for an order of sliders to be mixed and have 1 chicken, philly, and cheeseburger. Â Server tells me exuberantly..YES! Â Ok, I'll have one of those. Â Another person in the group says that sounds good, I'll have the same. Â A ridiculous amount of time passes (its not a busy night) and out comes 6 orders of sliders...literally one of each order. Â We finally flag down our waitress 15 minutes later by asking someone else to please bring her to the table (she didn't bring out the food as per norm)...and ask her about the issue - very pleasantly, we realize its easy to mix things up or maybe the kitchen confused the order. Â At first she apologizes as we explain to her the issue and says yes you're right. Â But then after a rearrangement of the plates so that we all can reach each of the 3 orders...she's just gives us a blank stare. Â Uhh...now we know where the problem is. Â So then I explain again what we were trying to order...after which she says, "oh, we don't do that". Â I'm pretty sure everyone knows its possible to order more than 1 order of food...so not sure what the server is/was thinking. Â Then we ask her well what can we do....we're not willing to pay $60+ for so many sliders which we didn't order and can't possibly eat. Â She says oh, well let me get the manager.
Manager comes out - says, "heard we're having problems over here?" - with an attitude like you're causing problems for us. Â I explain the scenario. Â He just looks at me, and says "we don't do that" with this smirk on his face. Â "Ok, I understand that, but I specifically asked if you do, and I was told otherwise." Â He looks away at someone, smiles, and then repeats, "Yea, we don't do that". Â So then one of my other friends in a joking manner is like "Well looks like now you can since you have 18 sliders out on the table". Â The manager then immediately says, "If you're not paying for them, you can't have them. Â I can easily resell these". Â I'm too surprised with the attitude and the health code violation to even know what to say. Â He then asks me which ones to leave, I pick one and he takes the rest. Â No other words were said by him. Â Looking at the type of manager present though, can't say I'm surprised by the customer treatment. Â He hopped back on his cell phone to chat with whoever makes him laugh and smile.
Further, the sliders weren't good. Â Bread on one of them was stale, the meat was steak ums quality...the combo of the horseradish sauce with the philly was a good touch though. Â Could have been a resell though...
Good place for lunch. Â I went in here on weekday and had the turkey burger, which came out a little dry to be honest. Â The sweet potato fries it came with though were great. Â All in all it cost me about $12 for the burger, fries and a drink. Â That being said I could have walked up the road to Madhatter and had the same thing for about $6.
Review Source:Food was good, especially the pizza. Â But, we got there at 6:55 (5 minutes before happy hour ended). Â We were seated immediately but our server didn't come by until 7:02, which was right after happy hour ended. Â I asked if we could still order happy hour since we were there and ready earlier but no one came by. Â He said sorry, there's nothing they can do. Â There has to be a little leeway here. Â That exchange just kind of soured the night.
Review Source:I almost did not write this review but every time I think about this place I get a sour taste in my mouth.
Was asked to brunch here for a weekly Sunday event they do. Even though the website showed no info about it.
The bouncer/host was rude and abrupt along with the apparent owner Anton (i think that was his name)
I received an official flyer invitation that indicated it was $35 for an all inclusive brunch which is a pretty good deal but when i got there the meathead bouncer dude told me basically I was lying and that it was $40 instead. I tried to show him the flyer which he brushed off so naturally I asked to speak to a manager.
With the proof of a different price right in front of him he decided that the extra $5 was for tax and gratuity... OK? If you could give me a receipt showing this I might understand but it was cash only. Who does $40 cash only in 2013?Get a credit machine please!
Basically it was false advertisement. I know its just $5 bucks but to please a potential returning customer why not honor what you advertise... Its about the principal. Needless to say I did not want to stay after the owner began to yell at me and not allow me to speak with out cutting me off but i had not spent time with my friend in a long time and leaving with others coming would have been more of a hassle.
One of the promoters had to come over to mediate between me and THE OWNER.
I guess it was the promotional group's flyer but he told me the extra $5 was for something else completely. Get your story strait or just fix it.
The food was ok, nothing special and buffet style so often there were empty trays needing to be filled. The guy with the drinks was sweet and kept my mimosa topped off. Music was even good but overall when the person in charge is that blatantly disrespectful to paying customers there is a problem. Atmosphere is average and nothing i can't find somewhere else in DC. I won't be back.
After an evening at the sculpture garden with a large party of about 15 folks on a Friday night we ended up at Bar-code.  I thought we were a bit under-dressed but we gave it a go anyway.  Apparently men aren't allowed to wear sandals in this place.  Fortunately, we were able to talk  the boucer out of his ego and we went inside. It's a nice swanky bar with a large dance floor and oversized booths.  I already had plenty of sangria before coming to this place so  I just ordered the Mixed green salad.  I give the salad 4 stars because it was really good; the beets really brought the flavors together in this salad and the dressing was nice. A very simple salad yet delicious.  The dance floor scene was pretty much non-existent and I think the contributing factor was the DJ.  He played some sort of pop/techno music and I need something I can actually dance to. I can work with hearing a few songs but not a mono genre the entire night.  I wonder how strong the drinks are here after seeing a drunk person from two different groups practically being carried out of the bar.  NEVER  a good look.  Maybe they were just a little excited about the hot weather.
Review Source:Came for a dinner with my bridesmaids and was impressed with the level of service. From custom menus to GREAT food and wine, Barcode's staff didn't come close to disappointing  us in any way. This was on a Saturday and we had dinner around 7pm? The restaurant wasn't loud or overly busy.. but by the time we left the dance floor was getting filled up! Will definitely go back!
Review Source:We went here for dinner with friends on Friday night. I know it was going to be loud, so that didn't bother me, but although I made a dinner reservation, the manager intentionally directed the hostess to seat us next to the bar even though there were plenty of tables open farther away from the noise. Bad call.
The food and service, however, made up for that initial mistake. We had the mussels to start. Completely wonderful! We'll go back just for those. I got the pesto pizza (no bacon) as an entree. It was very good, but after the mussels app, which was enough for more than 2, I could only eat one piece. Luckily they had a nice pizza box for me to take the rest home, and it reheated very well in the oven the next day. Our server was also excellent. Very attentive when we needed something, but also didn't bother us as we were clearly talking and catching up.
Overall, I was really it was very nice for a place that caters more to a bar crowd.
Went here on a random Tuesday night for drinks and was pleasantly surprised. There was a very good crowd inside and good music was being played throughout the night. Outside they had the hookahs going in full swing.
I've been here on a Saturday and had a great time as well - good looking women, great music, and everyone out on the dance floor.
I had fun here on a Saturday night with friends. The no cover was a very nice surprise, but when we made our way to the bar, we found out why: the drinks are very expensive, more expensive than any DC club I've been to. Regardless of what the employees responding here on yelp might have you believe, $13 for a simple jack/coke is not normal or acceptable in my book.
That said, we all enjoyed our time here. The middle area is a big dance floor, and it was bumping in there, though not so much so that you're getting crushed. The lighting was very dark, with blue and green strobe lights going off. If you have an issue with flashing lights, stay away! For me, though, it made the whole night - shaking my thang while buzzing and seeing colorful lights going off was a great experience, as odd as it sounds. Made me feel like I was floating on a colorful rainbow. It was trippy in the best say possible.
Bonus points for a clean, modern looking bathroom.
They also have hookah outside, which I didn't try but would love to. It seemed like a pleasant atmosphere for a smoke, and you can still hear the music inside for some entertainment. The people watching of dancers stumbling out of the club must be fun as well.
The food is great, but the experience is brought down by the lack of respect and customer service from the management. We waited for over 45 mins for our food (no apology), and when we tried to use the Yelp check-in discount the manager was rude and wouldn't accept it (this was our second attempt at using it). Such a pity, but I don't know if we'll go back for a third try due to the way we were treated.
Review Source:It was a good meal, nothing that made me desperate to return and boy was it loud at lunch with all the dressed up folk.  The waiter was really nice  though and the Barcode salad was good along with the cocktail.  The interior is super pretentious but I do like how comfy the booths are despite this.  The bathrooms are strange.  Very few gluten-free options unfortunately which is why I had the salad :(
Review Source:Ok, where to start. Â It's been quite a while since I've been this ticked off about a restaurant/sports bar. Â I went to this place to watch a UFC fight, they did everything they could to stop me from watching this fight. Â First of all, you need to reserve a table in advance, second there were a ton of open tables that they wouldn't let us sit on because they were going to move them for their club? Â Then, we sit on the couches to watch the fight, mind you it's 10:30pm and they move us from them because they were reserved...seriously? Â This place pissed me off and we left. Â The bar area sucks to watch the fights because they pushed us all to that area and you couldn't get a drink to save your life. Â If you were sitting in the reserved section, you couldn't watch the fight because I was standing in your way!!! Â
Chicken wings were good but expensive, typical DC prices though. Â They were actually great not just good. Â The steak I ordered (while sitting outside), was nothing special and the fries were nothing special either. Â
UFC FANS STAY AWAY
***For happy hour only***
Out of over 600 reviews, only 16 have earned a 1-star rating from me.  My previous visit to Bar-Cöde was an experience worthy of being one those 16 due to so-so service, poorly made, overpriced drinks, and an off-putting atmosphere with club music at eardrum splitting levels in a halfway empty room.  However, the guys were getting together for one last night of drinking before a friend PCSd out of the area and the plan was to meet for happy hour in the Dupont area as a launching point for the rest of the evening.  Seeing as how my previous visit was not during happy hour, yet others hold Bar-Cöde in high regard for its happy hour, we decided to start our evening there.
It was a sunny, comfortable late afternoon/early evening so Bar-Cöde had the windows open and tables set up on the sidewalk for al fresco drinking and eating.  The patio and bar areas were packed with happy hour revelers.  We sat in the dining room at one of the high tops.  Service was generally attentive (likely better than what we would've received at the bar with its two to three deep line) and most importantly our server was able to hear our orders without us having to shout over loud music and other customers.  Bar-Cöde's half priced beers and rail cocktails weren't a bad deal although I skipped cocktails and went with the draft beer.  Anytime you can get a pint of Dale's Pale Ale or Lagunitas Sumpin Sumpin for $3 a pop, I consider that a pretty solid deal.  We even split an order of the Grilled Calamari app ($10).  It wasn't overcooked or rubbery and possessed a nice grilled flavor, but it wasn't the most tender calamari I've ever tasted.
Anyway, as happy hours go, I can understand why the place is popular with the kids.  You can get your drink on for a very reasonable price in a place that tries way too hard to be hip and trendy.  Case in point, do you REALLY need to have a restroom attendant at any point in the evening, let alone at 6:30 during happy hour?  For happy hour, Bar-Cöde wasn't bad...but it wasn't anything special, either.
I find  Bar-Cöde to be a pretty cool place. It is very modern and clean looking for sure as mentioned in a few reviews. When I came here last night with Tara L. and her friends, we ended up getting some free drink tickets from the doorman when we first walked in. When this happens -- I go into automatic happy mode! The tickets were good for rail drinks and domestics, so don't expect to get a Grey Goose martini with it.
We sat at one of the long booths that can hold 8-10 people at them. There were 5 of us, so plenty of space. We ended up ordering a few things. One person got the Margherita pizza which he said was decent, I got the lobster bisque that tasted really nice, but so sure if it is worth $8, plus someone else go some artichoke dip. Tara got some sort of truffle pizza that I sampled -- that was great as well. Pizzas are thin sliced. They offer a full menu, so don't expect strictly bar food... far far from in fact with the price tag attached to it.
Bar-Cöde is a very large space. There is room for dancing and room for lounging with booth and bar seating. Music is top 40 dance mix. Definitely for the young professional crowd aging from 23-39. The have a solid reputation and you can totally see why when you visit.
Saturday night fun. If you're looking for a place to dance and have fun, bar code is not a bad choice. Typical bar with a good, loud music. Draws in a diverse crowd. No cover, heat lamps during colder weather in tent area outside the building. Music ranges from top 40 to electronic.
Not classy, not trashy, just a decent place for a good night out.
This is a very busy bar with an attempt at a "suave" environment. Â Went for happy hour and though the place was crowded (it was Friday, this wasn't surprising) we were served very quickly. Â Area was clean for the number of patrons, and the prices were about on par with what you'd find elsewhere. Â Half price beer/well drinks are always a plus.
Can't rate the food. Â Wasn't interested in it (nothing special on the menu). Â But i'd visit happy hour again. Â Pretty good crowd.
I've been to Bar-Code twice in the past couple of months - once on a week night date in early February and the second time I visited with a large group of friends to go dancing on a Saturday night. Â They were two completely different experiences and this place is quite dynamic - it transforms easily from a quiet, classy happy hour spot into a full-on club with a packed dance floor. Â
I'll split this review into two sections:
-Weeknight date: This is a nice place for a date, though the food is quite pricey (even at "happy hour" prices) and the drinks are too. Â The service is good, but there is almost nowhere to sit at the bar (they have very few chairs at the bar - they waste a lot of space) and they don't let you sit down at a table unless you're going to order food. Â It was quite annoying because there were SO MANY tables open, just begging for us to sit there. Â But alas, we had to make the choice to order food in order to sit down. Â The food was good, but definitely NOT worth the price. Â And the drinks? Â They were good - just standard happy hour drinks (but not quite at a happy hour price).
-Saturday night dancing: This place was PACKED. Â Quite annoyingly so. Â But that's to be expected when you go out dancing. Â The music was nice, but it was really difficult to squeeze through the crowds and get something to drink. Â They also charge at the coat room (cheap, if you ask me, since people are already spending a lot of money on the overpriced drinks). Â
Overall, I like the classy, trendy aspect of this place, but there were certain aspects that I found extremely annoying. Â Still, I will certainly visit again in the future.
A bar/club that plays your club anthems and top 40 mixes. A decent mixed crowd is the scene with flashing lights and a dance aisle. The bar is decently long, and the bartenders are quick. Drink prices are on par for DC, and no cover. Not a bad place to party, but the layout doesn't help the flow.
Review Source:This has grown into a popular spot. Crowded at lunch. Packed after work. But if you come between 2pm and 4pm and check-in on Yelp, you'll score a nice discount. This is a popular lunch spot for our office. And I've only ever been here for lunch so far.
My favorite lunch item is the wedge salad. I'm not particularly into have a meal for lunch, I just like to have a salad. And the wedge salad here hits the spot. It's bigger than I normally like, but it's delicious so I always clean my plate. What separates this wedge salad from others is their use of green apples. Seriously, green apples. Never would've thought of adding them to a wedge salad, but it works fabulously and is delicious.
The fries are also tasty, but a bit of a let down. When I read "dipping sauces" and it's "sauces", I expect more than just an aioli and ketchup. But the aioli is decent.
This spot has a total hip, modern, sleek feel to it. While everyone is allowed in, I sometimes feel too uncool to be here. It's very Miami and Vegas chic. And multiple people dine together at the long tables, but it works out just fine and doesn't feel like you're encroaching on someone else's meal.
Staff and owner are very friendly and attentive.
All in all, it's a very nice spot. And I love their wedge salad.
I LOVEEEEEE Bar Code!! This place is SO FUN with beautiful people on almost every day (except maybe not Monday--for some reason, the place is dead....) and perfect for happy hour. There are amazing happy hour deals....something like half off beers ($3) and wines ($4) which is AWESOME for DC. I really love the ambiance here, both inside and outside, and it's in a perfect location for those working in business (my first job was in Dupont and then my next job in McPherson...this is right between.) It's also cool to come to out on the weekends to dance and meet new people.... ;)
The dinner is nice, but the service is ridiculously slow and they practically ignore you for dinner (this happened several times.) The service at the BAR is fast and so I'm not giving the service a bad rating overall, it's just important to note for the different setting, depending on why you would choose to come to this restaurant. The food is really incredible--small and pricey--but really good if you can find the right food items and portions.
This is one of absolute favorite "go to" spots in DC and I would definitely recommend it for everyone living in and visiting the city. :)
I really want to love this place. Â Its happy hour specials are super great! Â There is dancing late-night! Â There's a space for special events! Â The bathroom doors are so fancy they need instructions! Â ...but I digress.
The main thing you need to know about Barcode is that the bar is too crowded and too loud ALL THE TIME. Â Which makes it a difficult place to do the chit chatting that happy hour is usually all about. Â
I understand that the place is popular, but the management style doesn't improve anything -- even though NOBODY is eating dinner until very late, they reserve all the tables for dinner anyway. Â It's infuriating to be crammed against a bunch of people at the bar, staring at dozens of empty tables. Â
Moreover, I always hear hilarious stories about bouncers being jerks about dress code -- refusing to let someone in with a baseball cap in their POCKET, for instance. Â
This place needs to relax a little to make happy hours a little more doable, so we can all enjoy it more!
Barcode is an excellent establishment - whatever the occasion is. I have been there for Birthdays, Special Events, Clubbing, Hookah and to watch football. When we want to go out for good food, drink and energy, it is on the top of my list.
I especially like Barcode during warmer weather for the patio/hookah and during Football season.
The food, drinks, music, ambiance and service are excellent. Â
The staff is not pretentious and is quite attentive. One thing about Barcode is there always seems to be an owner on premises which is advantageous.
I consider myself a regular and encourage others to do the same.
OMG, this was a cool place but not a very pleassant first experience in DC, thanks to our waitress Christina, who couldn't have been ruder and lacked important customer service skills.
For example, prior to ordering my meal and wine I shared with her that the ticket would need to be split so that I could pay for the alcohol on my personal card and food on my travel card. Well she seemed to understand that even though she didn't shake her head "yes" as if she understood or gave any inkling that she had comprehended. Low and behold when the check came it was wrong..shocker..so I stop her and attempt to explain again at this point she walks off before I am even done speaking.
It took all I had not get her manager, but it was late, I was exhausted and at that point just figured everyone in DC were ass holes and prepared myself to experience more rudeness. But low and behold everyone else was super nice in DC but I will not be retruning to Dick's I mean Bar-Code EVER AGIN.
Came here for lunch one day...I work five steps from it so why not? It was about time.
Everything about this was kind of "meh." I had the grilled chicken panini which was decent but they could have held back on the pesto. The fries that I got with it were also too hard and crispy. It wasn't particularly busy but the wait between ordering and getting our food was a little too long. The seating is interesting and it's definitely more of a lounge-y place than anything. Nothing stands out for me here so I won't be going back and I'm not willing to give it another shot for happy hour or later. Very unimpressed.
This spot get three stars because of the nice seating arrangements. Â The music on a Saturday night was kind of diverse which I expect strictly hop hop but want t horrible because I'm open to new things. Â I love the outside rent with the option to do hookah :-) :-)
On the flip side the drink were really weak!! Â Which the only real downfall for me. Â I had a patron margarita and a tequila sunrise and I was just a LITTLE NICE... #disappointing! Â
I would go back again I'll probably have a drink it two at home before I go to! Â
Overall, I had a good time :-)
The atmosphere is terrible for sitting down to dinner.
Not only was the service lackluster, but the booths are constructed as shared space - there is no divider, so you're sitting next to strangers.
Now, this would be tolerable if we weren't sitting next to wasted morons, who continually harassed us.
The management came by to apologize after we complained, but nothing came of it - nothing comped, etc. Coming from someone who works in the industry, a simple apology does not work when customers are unhappy - especially when it has to do with the other patrons in the restaurant.
Now, onto the actual service - it was just so bland. Our server couldn't even retain who ordered what drink. There were four of us. It's not that hard.
The Food: I would generally have given the place 3 stars for the food. It's decently priced and there were some good flavors. They bring olives to start. LOVE OLIVES. yum. Specifics: The artichoke app had great flavor (the app comes with four). As far as my mussels, they were missing some key notes. The white wine broth just wasn't bringing its full potential.
Also to note, the noise level is loud. This is the type of place you eat at after a few drinks, not somewhere you specifically sit down for dinner.
I finally made it here after seeing the Yelp deal for 20% off. Â I met up with about 8 co-workers here to celebrate a bday and they were able to accommodate our party size at one large table. Â The food was wonderful $5 wings $5 hamburger with fries all during happy hour until 12 am . Â Thats right 12am. Â I couldn't believe it myself. Â I ordered the $5 burger and grilled Brussels sprouts which were both great. Â The burger was surprisingly juicy and the Brussels sprouts were great. Â The Brussels sprouts just needed a pinch of salt but thats it. Â Also, great drink specials. Â Half off wine and any mixed drinks. Â This was on a Monday night and Im not sure if these deals apply for any other night of the week. Â The decor was very vibrant and modern. Â I loved the customer service and everyone was very attentive to our large part. Â
You will definitely start to see more check-ins from me here especially while they have the 20% off the entire bill deal going.
I have never been here for the food, but have no doubt it's amazing.
I come here strictly for the night club and have a great time every time. Â It's in a great location and walking distance from the lower part of Dupont. Beware, it can get super crowded on the weekends, but that's the whole point of going to a club right? You want to see and be seen and this club has a great crowd to do that with. The crowd here on a friday/saturday night is very diverse and always fun. The DJs always spin the best music, everything from top 20 hits to some dirty club tracks (for those of us who love our house/trance/trap/etc). The best part about this club is NEVER having to wait for a drink, the bartenders are quick and friendly...maybe because I'm a girl, but whatever it's fine by me :)
YOU CAN SMOKE HOOKA ON THE PATIO!!!! (major bonus points for this)
Thanks to the Barcode team, I have a blast every time I come!
