What a fantastic place to explore craft beer. A large section of various types of craft brews can be found at Beer Geeks, including a large number on tap. The staff is wonderful and very knowledgeable about the world of craft beer. The clientele is great as well. Excellent beer and great conversation. As well as live music on Tuesdays. You can't go wrong here. Top notch establishment, great atmosphere with arguably the best selection of craft beer in Northwest Indiana.
Review Source:I'm not a beer snob. I won't pretend to be. I do know what I like for the most part, and  when  I don't my boyfriend or the staff at Geeks talks me through it.
I love Beer Geeks. We typically go when it is slower, I've only been there once on Tuesday Bluesday. Â Weekend nights get pretty busy. Â We prefer to sit at the bartop itself. Â Jason, Rich and Sarah are amazing. Â They're always willing to let me sample a couple and they remember what I like, so they know what to steer me towards. Â Even the barback (who I call Fake Ryan Gosling, as he looks similar) is great . Â Everyone is happy to see you and I've never seen them be rude or stand off-ish to a patron. Â Even when someone walked in and said they're a Miller Lite guy, they didn't flinch. Â
I started as a Coors Light girl at 21, and then found Upland in Bloomington and became obsessed with Upland Wheat. My boyfriend convinced me to branch out, and now I'm a stout drinker.  Like I said, I won't pretend to be an expert on beer, but there is always something there  I've liked. Â
And if you're into off the wall movies, get there during a slow time. Â That's all I will say about that.
Finally made it out to a place that has been on my radar - or at least my twitter feed - for a long while now. Walking in on a (holiday weekend) Sunday I was pretty surprised by how packed it was. Lots of couples and groups, as well as a few lingering Bears fans who were already pulled up to the bar. Loved seeing the support for a place catering to "geeks."
It's geeky beer alright - bold flavor, obscure styles, high alcohol. Beer list has 20 on tap with some good stuff but seems a bit haphazard. That didn't stop me from trying a few. I like that they offer size options, as well as flights. Great for sampling, but also lets drinkers get in at a better price. The number one complaint we all hear from our Lite friends is craft beer is too expensive, so I think it's smart to offer something affordable. Good job, geeks. A real surprise on their menu was a page of mead and a page of ciders! Haven't seen this in the snobby beer places, so score one for the geeks in geeks v. snobs. Bartenders were laid back, knew their beer, and not at all snarky. Don't know if they had anything other than beer / mead / cider to offer, so wine, whiskey and others you might just be disappointed.
The murals that decorate the walls are, you guessed it, famous geeks. Drinking beer. I liked the holiday mural, with the Abominable Snowman and other misfit toys. It's easy to be put off by the stripmall facade with heavy dark woods arched over blind windows with white stucco" motif, which is carried inside by beamed ceilings that recalled some 70s interpretation of village architectural traditions by way of tacky. Reminds me of chrome postcard (or my parents split-level rec room).
Usually I let myself get down by a bad decor, but Beek Geeks rises above it and I'm guessing most of the folks drinking beer here don't really give a damn if it's dated or not. So I won't either, and salute them for pulling off a successful beer spot in what might strike some as an unlikely location. Cheers!
Love the selection of beers.
They have a vast array of beers on tap, as well as an extensive list of bottled craft beers. They even have two different kinds of "honey wine" (bottled) and a non-alcholic beer. I wish they could have had a hard cider or something, but I do love beer so I can't complain :)
The only negatives I could find are that they don't serve their "flights" of beers on Friday, Saturday, or Tuesday. It would have been nice to have been able to try a few beers without having to get a whole glass. And the lighting was kind of dim.
I did love the paintings on the walls, as well as the board games you could play. It was a nice environment.
I love a good beer. I especially appreciate beer that is as unique as it is tasty. I happened to find this place on Yelp but didn't realize how cool it would be until I stepped inside. There is a huge beer menu. The menu is clear on the strength and type of brew for sale. The beers are shipped in from all around the country. Many beers are rotated out every couple weeks. Every time I've visited the menu has been recently updated. This is not a place to get a Miller Lite. This is where you go to drink a real beer that you would have never been able to taste otherwise.
The atmosphere is all about uniqueness. Bands who play there are not playing tribute songs, they are playing originals that fit in with the ambiance. it's a bit dark in there but your eyes adjust pretty quickly. The crowd has always been friendly. Not a place I'd expect to see a bunch of college kids yelling at a football game or starting a fight.
I never would have expected to find this place in Highland. It seems like a place you'd travel to Chicago to find. I am glad they are here and I hope to see them for a while.
Great place with a real "down to earth" kinda feel. Â The beers are a great price for the type of beers you are getting. Have been there twice now, and each time there has been new beers on tap. Since they do not serve food, they welcome food at the two restaurants on either side of the bar, which is a plus. Would recommend to anyone who likes microbrews and trying new things!
Review Source:I live just a few minutes from Beer Geeks, and it is by far my favorite hang-out spot. My boyfriend and I, and frequently some of our friends are often there a few times a week. The beers on tap are always rotating, and each beer is always a great micro brew from the region, as well as some beers that are difficult to find. The staff is fantastic, the atmosphere is relaxed, and the prices are more than tolerable for such great beer. It would be really difficult to feel like an outsider at this place, even if you don't know much about beer. Just don't go in expecting to be able to order a Miller Light--I've seen it happen.
They have live music on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and it can sometimes get quite loud. it's also frequently crowded on those days, but I don't think I've ever known them to have a cover charge. Live music isn't really my thing, but if you like it, I'd suggest checking it out, since they usually have good talent. Tuesdays are blues bands, which is pretty fun.
All in all, great place, great beer, and great people. If you like those things, you'll love Beer Geeks.
I've never seen quite an extensive beer list before! The menu is 3 pages of eclectic brews. The space is fairly small.
The staff was fairly nice.
I don't drink beer and they don't serve wine. That's a huge minus in my book.
One of the staff gave us the name of a decent pizza place that delivered to us.
Unless the band plays here again, it's not somewhere I would just wander into again
I never thought I'd be so excited to visit my parents. Beer Geeks has a great gimmick going on with all of the beautiful paintings, and still has that Region flair of a thin, worn out carpet.
I couldn't believe that these wonderful craft beers were so cheap! I had the Fade to Black by Lefthand Brewery in Colorado for like $4 a pint. This is unheard of! The staff was very friendly, and willing to talk about geeky stuff. I also like that the bar is non-smoking, because sometimes you just need a break.
The women's restroom has an ottoman for your friend to sit on since girls always go to the bathroom together.
I can't wait to find another excuse to visit my parents and come back to give Beer Geeks all of my money.
Making the hour trek from Chicago to Beer Geeks was worth the trip. Amazing selection of craft /micro brews for a great price. A great band was also playing Lying Delilah, be sure to check them out. I didn't see any waitresses which made the bar crowded and hard to get a drink if you weren't sitting at the bar. Lucky for me we had seats right at the bar and the bartenders were very attentive, answered all our beer geeky questions. I would definitely go back!
Review Source:Great beer selection at very affordable prices. The draft selection is so well rounded and extensive that we didn't even get to the bottle list. About 20 beers on tap, mostly domestic craft brews, and while there wasn't a cask ale flowing when we were there, they often have one available which is a rare treat. After enjoying a locally brewed ESB that was creamy and well balanced, I went for a pint of Abita Turbodog. This Louisiana brewed brown ale is one of my favorites, so I was thrilled to find it on tap...not a common occurrence this far north.
Prices are exceptional, both of my pints were less than $5, and if you're undecided on what to order you can go with a sampler (not available on Sat/Sun) or a 10oz pour of most drafts. No food served, except for some pretzel sticks, but you're welcome to bring in a pizza from next door. If decor or atmosphere is your thing, than skip this place. But, if you're a beer geek like me you'll be in heaven.
This is the time to open up a craft beer bar if you're going to do it. This place does impress with the selection of both draft and bottled beer. Unfortunately, do to certain laws, some beers just can't be brought in for sale. Nonetheless, it's a great spot to hang out with friends over a few beers.
What I also liked was the pricing and sizing. Sometimes I'm not in the mood for a huge beer and here I have the option of getting something smaller. Further, the overall prices for these beers are much less than I'm used to paying so that was a pleasant surprise!
What I wish (and it's probably just me) is that this place would have been more edgy/trendy/urban... it's really just a dive that looks like someone's basement so that ambiance is really lacking. I'm sure there could have been reasons for this (preference, budget). However, I was hoping for something more hip, more of an atmosphere.
Have been to Beer Geeks twice now, with extremely different results.
My wife and I had heard of the place, with it's murals of "geek icons" such as Yoda and Spock pictured enjoying beers. Sounded like our kind of place!
So, on a road trip, we were nearby and stopped in. It wasn't overly crowded at the time, maybe 5-10 other people. There was a basketball game on the TVs and all the patrons, as well as the bartender at the time (didn't get his name), were paying far, far more attention to that (and yelling loudly about it) than anything at all to do with beer. We enjoyed a couple of beers and left, vowing not to return.
Ever the Charlie-Brown-football people we are, we returned last week. We got there early, and there were no other patrons, and the bartender was a 20-something woman named Megan. She KNOWS HER BEERS and we chatted with her and enjoyed several beers for a couple of hours.
So, if you're mainly about the beer (and at a place named BEER GEEKS.... O_O) - I have to say, go during the day, and chat with Megan. She really does know her beer.
Beer Geeks has become one of my favorite places to relax and enjoy great beer. Â While the microbreweries in the region are top-notch, Beer Geeks has such fantastic, rotating offerings it's like visiting 20 microbreweries all over the country at the same time! Â Free food Tuesdays is awesome, awesome, awesome! Â If you enjoy great beer and NO SMOKING than you should check this place out. Â Oh yeah, they are also one of the few places which have a beer engine. Â The old fashioned pull handle device used to pour fresh, delicious Cask ales....mmmmmm.
Review Source:Beer geeks has beer and spirits for everyone's tastes. They have a rotating tap which is awesome and specialize in craft and micro brews. The prices are right on target and it is SMOKE FREE! Â This is a huge plus for the non-smokers in the area.
The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I would have no problem taking my mother or grandmother to this establishment.
Great addition to the Region.
Great Beers on tap. Lots of rare ones as well.
One of the biggest problems with bars in NWI is that they are always so smokey. Beer Geeks, being smoke free, let's you not only go home not smelling like an ashtray, but you can get the full taste from your beer as well.
There is usually great music being played overhead and I have always had good experiences with the staff. They are knowledgeable and friendly.
DID I MENTION FREE FOOD ON TUESDAYS!!!
BOOYAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Love this place. Plain and simple. New and interesting beers every time you go in thanks to their rotating beer handles. When one goes out, a new one goes up.
The prices are great! I couldn't get over how reasonable the prices were. Although no kitchen, they welcome you to bring in food or order from the pizza place or burger joint next door.
The atmosphere reminds me of drinking in a friends basement who has plenty of beer.
They did have a band playing one of the times I went, and I thought it may have been a little too small of a place for a band but it didn't stop me from hanging out and drinking. Just couldn't converse with friends because of the noise.
If you are a fan of craft beers. Definitely check this place out!
this is exactly what the REGION needed. awesome rotating selection of microbrews. beer geeks also has live music and supports originals acts from the chicagoland area, the only bar i can think of in NWI that does so. no food, but free pretzel rods to soak up the beer. only reason this isn't' a five star review is because the place is super dingy. i think with a small revamp (tables/chairs/lighting and removal of the ceiling fans & carpet) they can take over as NWI'S #1 drinking hole, unless of course you're a clubber!!! cheers
Review Source:i have to agree with the reviewer who said "best beer list in the region". Â it is the best i've seen. Â also as previously noted - frequent rotation. Â what more could one want? Â i suppose a more hip atmosphere, but i'd disagree. Â this is the kind of place that attracts beer lovers only. Â NWI has lots and lots of "cool bars" for everyone else.
i guess i could say that i have one small beef to pick with the owner. Â beer geeks serve(d) founder's breakfast stout in a snifter. Â i've been to founders and they serve the BS in a pint glass. Â i get that more beer = more money. Â but i'd rather pay an extra buck to drink my oatmeal stout from a pint glass. Â that's were it belongs :) Â but, that's only a minor gripe. Â other than that, i think the place is perfect!
***one important note - they do not have a full bar! Â so if someone in your party is not a beer drinker, they won't be able to order a cocktail...
I'm a huge fan of Three Floyds, but if you're looking for a place to catch up with your friends over some high-quality beer, this is the place to go. A diverse selection of some really interesting microbrews, darts and foosball, and a knowledgeable and friendly staff: all the elements of a great hangout.
These guys get mad props for setting up a serious shop in the Region, where smoky sports bars abound. Check them out.
This place has the best assortment of beers in the Region. Â It is also great to come home after having a good beer and not smell like a cigarette for the next two days. Â The atmoshere reminds me of a family/friends basement:: Â a comfortable and not too loud place where friends hang out drinking a good beer and talking about anything on their minds.
Review Source:Beer Geeks has a very impressive beer selection, as they have over 20 beers on tap. They rotate their draft beers frequently, so make sure you keep an eye on their Facebook page for up-to-date news on different brews.
They don't serve food, but they sit between a pizza place and a taco joint. I LOVE the fact that it's non-smoking.
They only negative thing I can say about this place is the ambiance. It's just not very impressive. They do have very cool characters painted through out the place (Yoda, Doc Brown from Back to the Future...to name a few). There are only 3 TVs in the place, not making it very practical to watch a game.
Overall, the beer makes up for everything else...which is why you went there in the first place.
Beer Geeks has an impressive selection of interesting brews. Â Their menu changes frequently so if you really are a beer geek, go often for the new brews.
The bar is very dark and not very impressive. Â There is cute artwork of supposed b.g.s like Einstein, Mr, Peabody and Darwin. Â The bathrooms are nice with amusing posters.
There is a choice of a small or large on the drafts so you can sample several beers without getting wasted - easy to do with the high alcohol content of some brews! Â
That said, I dropped 40 bucks in an hour for two of us. Â Ouch.
They don't serve food but sit between a pizza joint and a taco place and encourage you to bring food in.
LOVE the no smoking policy. Â You can't taste the beer if the place stinks of smoke.
I'll probably go to FFFs for the interesting food and my favorite - Alpha King (available only in bottles at Beer Geeks) but this is a nice addition to the neighborhood.
