This review is strictly based on the appearance and prices of this place. I walked in to Banh Mi on Broadway yesterday and was a bit disappointed. Having gone to a few Banh Mi places here and other cities, I expected to see Vietnamese folks behind the counter. This at least gives me an indication they must own the place and I am getting authentic food - not some fushioned sandwich. Also, their prices are at least  double that of the 'real' Banh Mi places in viet town. I understand that this is Lakeview but double and more? Really? Thats also probaly why they do not put prices on their website. If they do you may think twice before going there. So I told myself I'll wait and pick up some Banh Mis when I go to Nhu Lan tomorrow where I know for sure that they will be really good since I've had theirs before. Bánh Mì & Co. is probably good for those who do not want to venture to the Asian section of town where they can gain some cultural experience.
Review Source:Ok, I don't get what all the fuss is about. Â The sandwiches are good...I'll give them that. Â (Although...they really are overpriced considering their competition.) Â The bread is perfect and crispy and the pate is a great feature on the sandwich. Â But even though this is at the end of my block, I'd rather go to Ba Le any day. Â
Not only doe Ba Le have more selections for sandwich types, but they don't get your order wrong. Â I've been here a handful of times and EACH time, I'll ask for no cilantro - without fail. Â And everytime I open up my sandwich, there's cilantro right on top. Â Ugh, really?
Also, I placed an order on Seamless and paid online prior to pick-up. Â When I got there, the woman still charged me for the sandwich. Â I was caught off-guard and, yes, I probably should have questioned her at the time, but every other restaurant clearly knows when something is prepaid. Â Blah. Â What a waste. Â
I love Get Nail'd (which I believe they also own, too), so I really wanted to be a fan of this place. Â Maybe I'll give it another go. Â Or...probably not.
Out of the several Vietnamese places I've been to, Bánh Mì & Co. is definitely my favorite. Though I know practically nothing about Vietnamese food, I do know a thing or two about sandwiches, and the crunchy bread, the fresh jalapenos, and the pickled carrots combine to form a good 'wich. The seating arrangement is pretty strange, with most of the bar-style seating facing the wall and no tables. But the atmosphere is as a whole nice. Would have been 5 stars but they recently raised the prices from 4.85 to 5.85 for a banh mi.
Review Source:I love this place! I go here at least once a week, and their meatball sandwich combo is such a great deal. Their wonton soup is amazing and so is the papaya salad. The staff is super friendly but service is a little on the slow side. I don't really care because the lady making the sandwich is straight from Vietnam. Definitely check this place out.
Review Source:I stopped here for lunch recently and ordered the pork roll combo with a BBQ pork spring roll. I was impressed. The ingredients were very fresh. The price was very reasonable. The space is definitely small with no tables so a leisurely lunch/dinner with others might not be successful. Even the counter was pretty narrow, so my lunch seemed precariously perched. We'll be adding this place to our "light lunch" rotation.
Review Source:After a long day at work, I thought Banh mi was the perfect dinner choice. As I waited for my Saigon Classic, an old Vietnamese woman sat behind the counter folding wontons. Maybe I'm missing home but the sight of that was the best/most comforting way to end my day.
To top it off, the sandwich is perfectly balanced with the pickled carrots and crunchy baguette. Love this neighborhood and my new Banh mi shop. It should be yours too.
Oooh this is some great banh mi. I had the tofu and it was very fresh. The baguette was soft and warm and the ingredients were so fresh.
It's a very cute place but there's not much seating. Also, the service is just so-so. I got my food in a reasonable time, but I felt like I was being rushed out the door and I wasn't staying. Oh well. Very reasonable price. I enjoyed it very much!
In my opinion, this is much better than Nhu Lan (disclaimer: I've only been to Nhu Lan's location on Belmont, not the flagship restaurant on Lawrence). I ordered the same items I did at Nhu Lan here today for lunch, and Bahn Mi wins hands down. For starters, this place is like a cute little deli/cafe type place. Not like Nhu Lan where you walk in and it smells of rotting food and there are cheesy neon colors everywhere.
I had the bbq pork sandwich with no mayo. I like the bread to meat/toppings ratio here. Very tasty. I also got the shrimp spring rolls with peanut sauce. Yum yum. There's also a few chairs about to sit and eat or to wait for your food. They were plenty busy today even at 2pm on a Saturday. I will come back to try their soups, salads, etc.
Go here instead of Nhu Lan.
Yes, friends. Just. Yes.
Bahn Mi is awesome. Tiffany and her lovely staff whip up some of the best tasting, best priced fare in the city. I've worked my way through the menu and can vouch for just about everything (except the rice bowls, which I haven't tried). I'd love to tell you that the sandwiches are better than the spring rolls which are better than the salads which are better than the soup, but it's just not true. Base your decision on what you're feeling like - I love the spring rolls for a lighter fare, the soup is great for a cold night - or if you need something meaty. Sandwiches are good to go, and I actually find the salads the most filling (opt for the lemongrass chicken). Friends of mine could argue about the most complimentary protein for hours - but in truth they're all delicious.
You get a tax discount if you pay with cash, so it's worth hitting up the atm before your meal.
Loved the bahn mi here! Very good. They are also made very quickly. I had some soup and the bahn mi and both were great. The quality was up there with any bahn mi I've ever tried. The person working the register and taking orders was very friendly and I loved that nice touch. There is a little seating inside and some outside which I imagine won't be around during winter. I can't wait to go back and try some of the other combos. I had shredded chicken in mine and it was perfect, nice and full of flavor.
Review Source:This place is as good as noted below. Â I tried it for the first time yesterday. Â The curry chicken Banh Mi was awesome--an interesting sandwich with a nice kick to it. Â When do you ever have a sandwich that's spicy?
Then I had a shrimp spring roll with that awesome spicy peanut sauce (not like you're used to from, say, Thai places) and that was great too. Â
Filling, but not food-coma filling. Â And inexpensive. Â Luckily, I live around the corner. Â I will now be a regular.
I'm from an area with a lot of good vietnamese food. Â You should take that into account when reading this review.
All around i give this place a 'Meh'.
I don't really know how much more expensive chicago is than seattle or vice versa, but i can get the same types of food for the same price and they are much much better.
Its not that the food was bad, or that i left feeling un-full, its just that the food was boring.
I'm used to wonton soup broth having flavor other than cilantro.
I'm used to Bun with a few additional ingredients including friend eggrolls.
I'm used to fresh rolls with wrappers that aren't tough.
I'd eat here again, and if i lived nearby they would certainly get my money as they seem to be open late enough, but in general the food just wasn't that interesting.
Bahn Mi & Co is tiny and adorable. Seating is minimal, so have a backup plan or order to go in case you can't get something. BYO which makes it yet another insanely reasonable place for lunch or a light dinner.
I had the lemongrass tofu bahn mi & thought it was delicious. Their siracha was really spicy, which is key. Great spring rolls & the couple next to us was eating something over rice which looked really tasty. I'll definitely be back.
Oh, and the sesame rice ball was perfectly done, not greasy, just nice and sweet.
I've never tried Banh mi sandwiches before but now I'm a fan!
I've been wanting to go here ever since this place opened and started getting rave reviews. Stopped by to try their sandwiches. The vegetarians/vegans have a few options that feature tofu and seitan. I got the $5 banh mi sandwich with lemongrass tofu and it was amazing. The tofu was marinated, seasoned and not at all a bland mess that they serve at most places. The fresh veggies were crisp and tasted great. The bread was soft and delicious too. This is not for people afraid of too much spice, because they pack in a few big slices of jalapenos. Definitely worth a try!
This place is one of my favorite banh mi sandwich shops in the city (along with Nhu Lan). I usually order the pork roll or the bbq pork and like them both. With banh mi, the things I usually look for are the freshness and crispness of the bread, the meat taste and quality, and the vegetable toppings. The bread is very good (maybe not as good as Nhu Lan's but still good). The meat is tasty and good quality. And the vegetables (carrots, cucumber, daikon, cilantro) are very fresh.
I also have to agree with some of the other reviewers that this place has some of the best wonton soup I've ever had. For me, the soup is all about the broth which just has a lot of flavor, but the wontons are very good too although they do tend to fall apart fast. All in all though some of the best wonton soup I've had.
I came in here one rainy evening to meet Kenny O., but he was late and I felt awkward sitting by myself so I ordered my banh mi to go first. I ordered the cha lua (pork roll) banh mi, but they gave me something different-- grilled pork, maybe? I didn't find this out until much, much later.
I had a nice conversation with the lady owner, and once she found out that my parents were from Vietnam, she offered me a ca phe sua da (Vietnamese iced coffee) for free. That was really nice of her. Then Kenny arrived, and she asked me if he was my boyfriend. Um, no, not back then.
My sandwich was good. It reminded me a little bit of a place I loved to get my banh mi from in San Francisco, but it wasn't quite there either. I will have to come again for my cha lua banh mi, and I hope they'll give me the right sandwich next time.
This place seriously rocks. Came here on a warm summer night with 4 friends, sat outside with 2 six-packs (BYOB is the best!).
Split some pork, chicken, and veggie spring rolls and wonton soups as apps. The wonton soup was awesome, and the spring rolls were fresh and crisp.
I personally had the curry chicken banh mi. Even the bread they use is perfect!
What really sells me on this place is, as others have mentioned, the ambience, prices, and staff. Banh mi for $4!? Amazing. And the guy who was helping us (he seemed like the manager or owner) went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and welcome. He lent us a bottle opener, took our orders at the outside table even though one usually orders at the counter, and brought us some of his special sauce- spicy garlic hot sauce that he makes himself.
Probably, the best restaurant I've eaten at in Chicago. You can find quality and a low price in this city, but it's rare to find good ambience without paying a premium. The restaurant itself is really beautiful, with fine little touches. I especially love the pots on the ready for vietnamese coffee. But everything is so fresh; the bread and sandwiches are always so good.
Also, this is the first place I've been to that encourages you to spend cash by giving you a discount. What a cool way of handling the credit card companies surcharge.
I'm a pescatarian and so I eat fish and veggies and dairy. I'd tried Ba Le and knew about the sandwiches, and the sushi buffet across the street has disappeared (very sad), so my wife and I embarked on this new and tasty adventure.
I opted for the seitan veggie sandwich since it was recommended for "vegans" over the tofu by the man who took my order. Tofu is also vegan, but I digress. The seitan tasted like it was from a can, but I like seitan from a can so that's ok. I'd probably appreciate something more along the lines of Uptons or a homemade seitan - it's really not hard to make - just add water to gluten flour and makes strips and boil. Or buy Uptons from whole foods. Whichever.
The ingredients were fresh and good but not as abundant as Ba Le (my wife's appraisal) and still they were falling out of the sandwich. Noodles seemed to be missing but I guess that's now they roll here (roll, haha) - still, it was a great sandwich!
The veggie spring rolls (with tofu) were very tasty and came with an excellent peanut sauce that was slightly spicy. I loathe the lazy "vinegar and sugar and carrot peels" sauce that places like Dong Ky present and was very impressed with the sauce.
They have all sorts of sodas and one is a butterscotch root beer. This is candy in a bottle and I highly recommend it!
All in all my wife and I had a great meal and a nice time and the owners were very nice.
Vietnamese chicken curry sandwich + combo included 1 spring roll & a drink for $7 = greatest decision ever.
I was just walking back from the ATM and noticed their simple menu outside (figured it had to be somewhat good if they're focused on a few key items). I was also wondering why they had a handful of already prepared and wrapped spring rolls by the counter - it's because they're so delicious and people get them almost every other order. The cashier lady is sweet and very pleasant to talk to.
*Word of advice, you get surcharged for using a credit card here, so if you care about paying a little less, bring cash. Also they have free wi-fi at this location with the name/password clearly posted up on the side.
When the week of our rehearsal dinner our go to banh mi provider stated they would be unable to provide us sandwiches for our rehearsal dinner I hit a dead end. Â But after listening to some friends and Yelpers I found Banh Mi & Co and never looked back.
Let me note that I was coming in on Thursday and asking for a large order to be delivered on Saturday night. Â "No problem." Â I was told and it really was a breeze. Â
Upon my entrance into their no frills shop I sat down and tried to absorb their menu. Â Their menu descriptions do not do their sandwiches justice as I would soon find out. Â Lee came out and immediaetely began piling food in front of me. Â Veggie banh mi, lychee lemonade, veggie spring rolls, some soy milk that was sooooooooo good. Â Right off the bat the tofu and mushrooms in the banh mi won me over. Â So rich and hearty and not at all boring the way tofu can be. Â I could eat rolls of the bread alone. Â Soft with just a little crispness that didn't crumble into a million pieces when I bit into it. Â Everything was so good but I had to stop eating in order to fit into my wedding dress two days away.
Lee was so kind and generous adding on extras to everything I ordered. Â He even snuck in some spring rolls into the bag of BBQ banh mi for my fiance though I told him not to!
In the end, out of a room of 60 people, some who are VERY VERY picky, everyone ate the sandwiches and spring rolls and was happy. Â I was very happy with the end result and my mother was pleased to have extra sandwiches to serve after the wedding. Â I was even surprised after the honeymoon that my mother had frozen one or two and they warmed up perfect. Â :) Â Here we are two weeks after the wedding and last night when we were at my mom's for dinner my now husband asked "are any of those sandwiches left?" Â
I would say Banh Mi and Company has some new customers that will make the drive just for them!
I always have a great experience here. I have had their lemongrass and shredded chicken sandwiches to go a few times - I need to try some of their other offerings.
I call my orders in ahead of time and they have always been ready early. The service is always friendly, and they offer a cash discount that beats my rewards card. I wouldn't change a thing.
Before I talk about the actual restaurant, I'll just put it out there that I'm the biggest wonton soup fanatic, like, ever. So when this place finally opened, that was the first thing I tried. The meat was delicious and the broth was heavenly. Honestly, it's the best wonton soup I've ever had. Probably the best in town.
In order to avoid looking like a bad customer, I purchase two bowls of wonton soup. There's always a silent rule that you shouldn't order only 1 tiny thing (especially since it's a side order) in a restaurant. It's disrespectful otherwise. But if you pay in cash you get a round-down discount. WHAT! WHY!? I'm trying to look good here. But Banh Mi & Co. is definitely the star of the show.
....Yes, I've only ordered the wonton soup ever since they opened. Remember that I mentioned that I'm a freak for soup! Miso hungry for miso soup? Miso obsessed with WONTON SOUP! If I ever try their banh mi's (what they're actually known for.... heck, thats their freaking restaurant name) I may get obsessed with it too. But yes, the soup. It's wonderful.
This place wasn't as enjoyable as Nhu Lan right around the corner. For the same price this sandwich is smaller and more "americanized". My bahn mi was also topped with too much pepper. If you want something more authentic I suggest Nhu Lan.
I did, however, enjoy the atmosphere and the self serve water station. Each water pitcher had a few oranges to add more flavor.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you pay in cash it's cheaper.
I love the food and i've really enjoyed every experience I've had in the restaurant. I've even directed other people to go here through my job, but I'd never order delivery from here again. In fact, the last time I was over there I went to Nhu Lan instead and it was great, as always.
I ordered delivery from here last week and when the order came, the soda was missing. I called after the driver that it was missing the soda, to which he responded that he'd have to come back. I responded, "Okay." Somewhat surprisingly they neither came back nor called me. I suppose I could have called them but while I'm not going to go chasing diet coke around the city, I am going to be annoyed by lousy customer service enough that I will avoid a restaurant i've otherwise liked and post about my experience here.
It's unfortunate because the girl who's always at the register is really nice and the other employees preparing food behind the counter were very nice every time I've been in there. I wish Ba Le delivered.
So I stopped by to Banh Mi & Co for lunch today since I was in the neighborhood. It was my second time here; last time I got the shredded chicken banh mi and ice coffee. Both were good (looove Vietnamese/Thai-style ice coffee! and BM&C did not disappoint ;D ), but the chicken wasn't really memorable (or maybe I doused too much sriracha for spice). Today, I got the lemongrass chicken banh mi. The spicy, citrus-y kick from the chicken was very tasty! I love heat + peppers, but not a huge fan of sriracha, so the chicken coupled with the jalepenos sufficed. I also love their bread. It's less airy than Ba Le's bread, but definitely had that signature crunch that I seek in a banh mi.
It's a little tight in space, but there weren't too many people sitting around for lunch when I've come here so seating wasn't a problem. The only down side is it's a bit slow, but if you're not coming here on a time crunch (i.e. on your lunch break), I totally recommend trying the place! It will be my go-to sammy joint when I'm in the area (like 2x a week lol).
After walking 1.5 miles for no good reason, my friend and I just wanted food and some air conditioning. We thought about a patio, but the thought of being outside was so unappealing at this point. We looked across the street, and Banh Mi & Co's door and garage door were closed. Hallelujah. The minute we walked in, the people there were very friendly. My friend got the curry chicken banh mi, and I got the lemongrass chicken banh mi. We sat at the counter along the wall just wallowing in our own heat. Thankfully they had pitchers of lemon water, which I poured into my water bottle and chugged.
My sandwich was so good. Crunchy bread, a good serving of vegetables including some delicious pickle carrots, flavorful chicken and some squirts of their huge bottles of sriracha and suddenly I was no longer miserable from the heat outside. One of the guys there made sure we liked our food, and he offered us free wonton soup. Though full, we said we would split a bowl, and damn that soup was good. If you're a cilantrophobe, you'll have to ask for no cilantro because it seems to be in everything.
I'll definitely be back to try all the meats. This place is clean, nice and best of all, cheap. I'm not sure who picks their music, because "Venus" by Bananarama came on which made me feel like I was in the middle of a women's razor commercial.
I really hope this Bahn Mi restaurant stays open!
I've been to a similar restaurant on Broadway and my experience at this one was so different.  I ordered the Bahn Mi grilled pork and  spring roll (has 3 large shrimp) combo.  The bread was soft and warm.  The grilled pork was tasty but I love the jalapenos and cilantro that they add to this sandwich.  Such a great combination of flavors.  If you need a spicier sandwich you can add the red sauce that they have on the counter.  It's probably "guatemalen insanity sauce". Â
The people working there were so friendly and I say this because we walked in about 30 minutes before they closed. Â You know the looks you can get when a business is about to close. Â Not here...we were greeted with smiles and geniune hospitality. Â That's big in my book.
I also noticed they had a curry chicken Bahn Mi that I cannot wait to go back and try. Â
Wow...I'm a fan!
Right on price point, not too expensive ($4.95 for bahn mis). Sure, you could find cheaper way up north but this is a great spot nevertheless. Plus, the owner was soo friendly.
I got the chicken curry bahn mi. The menu is very simple with pork with pate (I tried a sample, not bad!), beef, seitan, and of course the chicken curry. They serve spring rolls and noodles in whatever combo you want.
The bread was crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside--not stale at all. The curry was perfectly spicy, and all of the usual other components were there. Simple and fresh. The storefront is very tiny but equally clean.
Free siracha packets to go! I'll be back, and perhaps try the won ton soup.
My boyfriend loves this place. Â I've never been in the restaurant, instead experienced them as takeout and at the Lakeview Arts Festival. Â
Perhaps I'm just not a fan of deli meats, but the mix of meats and spices aren't for me. Â I'd be much happier with more veggies on the sandwiches. Â I've had three different sandwiches here and have solidified my opinion. Â The iced coffee was good, however.
The place is really fast and I've heard that the staff are fantastic and willing to help however they can. Â Despite me not liking the food, I'd encourage you to check it out!
After seeing Matt L's review for this place, I thought I would check it out. Due to the fact he didn't give me any info whatsoever via text message I tried to go on a Tuesday and they were closed (they are only open on Mondays).
I saw Jelena Z's review today which made me think about this place again. I got the same thing she got, the shredded chicken sandwich. The bread was toasted for about 45 secs which definitely gave it a crunch appeal. The meat was pretty minimal as all the other reviews stated, but even though it was a small amount it was very good. The sandwich was a little over $5 so I guess I can't complain too much, plus it only took a few minutes to be ready for consumption.
Due to Matt L finally giving me a proper recommendation, I went ahead and came back for the steak and it was even better than the shredded chicken...still very bready though
Due to the fact it is nearby, I will have more chances to try their other sandwiches
I remember chatting with the owner of Bun Mi Express not too long after they opened and hearing about his plans to expand in the area, or more specifically, on Broadway. And here we are!
Same premise and same great product - Banh Mi & Co is a quick-serve, modern shop with limited seating and reasonable prices. In just under 5 minutes and $5, I was out the door with my shredded chicken sandwich. The bread was toasted warm with equal parts crunch and doughy chew to it... just the way I like it.
While the sandwich is admittedly on the skimpy side for the price (a 2.5 mile straight shot up Broadway will get you more, for less), it's still a pretty kick ass sandwich. And, unlike their Viet friends up north, they dole out free samples every single day. Who doesn't love samples?
Welcome to the 'hood, BMAC.
