Brehon Pub is one of Chcago's best neighborhood bars. The bartender Megan is the best in the city of Chicago. She always delivers service with a smile, the best drinks and the best pub food anywhere in Chicago. Everyone who knows Brehons goes because of Megan. We have been going for years and seen many bartenders here and she is tops. When we open a bar we are taking her with, sorry Romero. She is too good to be true.
Review Source:So we stopped in this little hidden gem earlier this week when my company was in town for business. Â It was quite a pleasant surprise! Â I had the bruschetta as a snack....and it was amazing!!! Â Not only was the food great, drinks tasty...but the service was great! Â Our bartender Meg was so much fun! Â She was not the typical Chicago "I think I'm better than you" bartender!! She was down to earth, funny, and prompt! Â We intended on stopping in for a quick bite/drink and ended up staying for quite a few more...(not that anyone was counting ;) Â She made us feel like we were at home, and by the end of our stay, we were friends with the other regulars! Â We will definitely be back the next time we have business in Chicago!! Thanks Meg for the great time, our company appreciated it!
Review Source:Been here two weekends in a row to play darts and enjoy the chill atmosphere. Even said it was my new favorite bar; not too crowded, has darts, a jukebox, I like their chicken enchilada soup good place to watch a game. Met another couple and shared some tasty banana-doughnut ice cream dessert to celebrate a birthday. But the one short-haired blonde bartender with the nose ring I think has ruined it for me.
She shouldn't have been busy, certainly didn't look busy, and it got to the point that I felt like I was wearing an invisibility cloak. Whatever. What pissed me off was that when I *politely* mentioned in a "just so you know" kind of way that my half-finished food was taken before I was finished without anyone asking, she said, "Well what do you want ME to do about it?" Ummm...holy cow! Really? For real, did I deserve a retort like that? Yikes!
After that she did her best to ignore me and make me feel like I was inconveniencing her by coming there all night. When my invisibility cloak malfunctioned at JUST the right time again, I ordered drinks and came back to pay for them several times and she was nowhere to be found. At last call, she served everyone but me and then told me no. Probably was behind the rude bouncer coming to tell us it was time to go even though everyone else wasn't getting talked to like that. I didn't even have a drink to finish like they did.
Everyone has a bad day and maybe this was hers, and I want to go back because I like this bar, but I'm scared of being treated so rudely for no reason at all. :(
My "last meal" before going Paleo again was at Brehon Pub, and I was aiming to make the most of it.
This place is super dead around lunchtime. It has a jukebox and a pretty decent menu. We ordered lunch and our food came quickly.
I indulged in a bunch of carbalicious appetizers, which included the super dreamy mac and cheese. OMG. The sauce was so thick and creamy, and the breadcrumbs on the top provided a nice crunch. I also like that they used shells instead of elbows (SHELLS ALWAYS WIN, BITCHES).
I'm back on Paleo though, so I probably won't be eating Brehon's mac anytime soon. I will dream about it, though...
smaller, comfortable corner bar located about three blocks from the court for administrative hearings (400 w superior), which was the reason for my visit. Â two doors, the main entrance off wells and a small side door on superior. Â street parking all around. Â if you walk in the windows storefront on well, you almost immediately notice wood, the floors, bars stools, high tables & bar rail. Â the ceiling are appropriately painted, green stamped tiles. Â a nice touch includes brown painted molding that separates the green ceiling from the yellow walls.
on the south wall are five 4-person high tables. Â the wood stools & tables are well worn and can squeak, but again comfortable. Â over the tables are long vertical rectangular windows. Â the north wall includes the long bar divided in half by a through way. Â 8-10 chairs on the west side and 10-12 on the east side. Â bar top is laminate, while the rail is wooden and shaped in a traditional manner. Â good, wide boxed foot rest.
the bar back though is perfect. Â over the west side are cabinets and a cooler, nice but northing too great. Â over the west side though, is a great wooden decorated arch. Â inside the arch is a large mirror and liquor shelves. Â larger hdtvs throughout make this a good place to catch the game. Â the music is typically younger rock. Â decor is irish & chicago sports, primarily hockey (the Cup has visited). Â plastic dartboards & cigarette machines towards the rear. Â food and service are both very good.
visit was during the day, but decided to come back later and brehon turns into a neighborhood bar, though note the neighborhood is young, artist, etc. Â great place with a fun vibe. Â though before & after dark are both fun, best time to spend time at brehon is during the afternoon/late afternoon when the sun is shining through the side & from windows.
This place is awesome. Everyone has to have a local bar and this should be your spot. Bartenders and some of the coolest people you can talk to. They usually dread seeing me and the other 2 locals I go with because they always get hammered with us on random Saturday afternoons. The food is normal bar food and nothing to write home about, but when you are drinking like that, all food takes good. There's 2 pool tables in the back bar and darts in the front. I'm partial to the jukebox, but they sometimes let you just plug your Ipod in if you have one. I love this place and look forward to the weekends because of it.
Review Source:There are some great and not so great things about this place. They balance themselves out.
For a while this winter I was coming here once a week because my boyfriend and I could both grab a dinner we enjoyed, and get out of the house.
They have a daily special for $6.75 and I've tried a few of them. Solid bar food, and if I grab one of those and a drink on tap, I can come in at under $15 for dinner and a drink, including tip. Win There.
Tater Tots. YUM. Guiness Stew - its a nice start but I've had much better at other irish pubs else where. Good basic Burgers.
They have Metropolitan, so big plus for me there. I like my local Chicago Beers.
Now for the not so positive.
We've been here on weekday evenings, as well as weekends. We stopped coming so frequently because there'd be a group at the bar of 6-8 watching the game, and being very loud in their support or disdain of the group.
There is a second side room with a pool table, and that room would be equally as loud.
We also met a group here of 6 people and were able to snag the one booth right up in front of the booth so we could all fit. This was a Friday evening meetup for a meal and to hang out, and it was so loud we had to yell at each other across the table.
Food service is generally consistent to the waiter you get. We've had the same waiter a few times, and she is consistently a bit slower than the waiter we had the first couple times we've been here.
This place is for the locals. People here aren't the tourists - they're the ones who live/work in the neighborhood, and I've seen everything from after work drinks to birthday parties to just catching a drink. My kinda place, i just wish it wasn't quite so loud. But that's what you get when a bar puts in TVs like every other bar in town.
Solid 4 stars--enough to get me there twice in one week. I work and live nearby, so I was surprised to spot this little gem of a neighborhood bar hidden in plain sight. Never even knew it even existed. It looked cool, so I checked out its website and put it on the pub crawl list for St. Paddy's Day.
Was a very good-sized crowd, but not packed like sardines. We were enjoying cold pints of Guinness, green Jello shots and the jukebox without being elbowed by Lincoln Park fratdaddies. Not only that, the servers were all very nice. I don't know about you, but if I were working that day, I'd be surly as hell. Everyone had a smile. A pleasant change.
I noticed they had lunch specials on their website, so I dragged some coworkers down for the Wednesday pulled pork lunch. Well, I'm not a bonafide Texan, but I did live there for a decade, and I must say this is damn fine pulled pork. The tots were terrific, and the price can't be beat. Everything came out pretty quickly. Â We even won over my own ornery coworker who likes nothing. The dude would eat Subway every day of his life if we didn't stop him.
Now, I'm generally pretty oblivious--I mean, I didn't see this bar for a year and a half of residing near it--but I didn't notice the daily lunch specials posted outside or inside, or even on the menus. I bet this place could bring in more folks if they were well-displayed on a chalk board outside. I had to find them on their website, and who really goes to websites these days? Anyway, thumbs up. To this bar. Not to me being totally oblivious.
Totally, completely disappointing. Went here for lunch with a few people from my office and sat at the bar. The bartender, seeming pretty surly and unhappy to be at work, neglected to give me a menu (while everyone else in my group got one) and took her time getting folks' orders.
Food was slow to come out-- mine took well over 25 minutes-- and, when it did, it was totally underwhelming. The buffalo chicken sandwich-- Friday's special-- was comprised of a tiny breast grilled or fried and quartered on two hulking what can only be described as buns the consistency of mushy hot dog rolls.
When my coworkers and I got our bills? Surprise! Multiple upcharges we were not warned of and over $5 for a Blue Moon. The hell?!
Props for serving fried green beans. But other than that? Well, in an area swamped with solid lunch options I'll pass. Or just get a liquid lunch.
so its a bar. nothing really all that fancy. They have daily specials, and we go there on Friday to get our liquid lunch. personally I like the friday special, its a buffalo chicken sandwich and vodka shots (I got the pineapple one which tasted rather synthetic). But good value, my bill was $12. Oh and the sandwich comes with a generous side of chips or tater tots.
The place itself is rather dark, lots of wood and definitely irish. Â Not too many people care how you look and act. simple and non complicated bar.
I have finally found my neighborhood dive and I love it. Objectively, its not a dive, but when compared to all the yuppie establishments in River North, it's the closest we get. This is my kind of bar.
A simple, no-nonsense pub, that will take you in any state of dress or undress. Last time I was here, it was a group of us coming back from paintballing, still in our sweaty and muddy clothes. Try finding another establishment in River North that would take you like that. I've never found the place crowded, and its always easy to find a table or place at the bar.
Great selection of beers (Left Hand's Milk Stout may be my new obsession), and they pour a stiff drink as well for a reasonable price.
Standard pub grub, which hits the spot. It can be a bit hit or miss-the toasted rav was sub-par (compared to original STL style), but the Irish nachos are a great greaseball of fun.
I love living in River North, but one downside is there aren't a whole lot of neighborhood joints like you'd find in some of the surrounding neighborhoods. Thankfully, the Brehon Pub is that classic Chicago/Irish pub to help fill that void. Honestly, one of the things I like best about it is that it's rarely crowded and I can always find a seat at the bar, which ain't always easy in the area.
I don't go back just for that reason though, I've always had good bar food there and their prices aren't bad. My favorite is the bacon & egg burger with the delish tater tots.
The bartenders are friendly and hard-working, but sometimes when they get busy they can get understaffed at times. Haven't been yet but they have a decent sidewalk patio that can seat a couple dozen on those nice summer days.
Typical Irish pub. Yawn. I had a YouSwoop for Brehon so I went. The service is casual.Take Order. Deliver. Repeat.
The Tex-Mex eggrolls are ok. The wings are terrible. Mine were overcooked so they were dry, tough and lacked flavor. They were supposed to come in a Thai chili sauce but it was just bbq sauce. The wings weren't evenly coated some soaked and others dry. Lack of attention by the cook.
If you do end up going to Brehon, then order the onion rings as they are very crispy and yummy. Other than that, no need to go.
Sorry, Brehon. Â You just got bumped down to 1 star. Â
Why? Â Because you took way too damn long. Â My wonderful boyfriend surprised me for lunch, and we went to Brehon (1 block from office) thinking it would be a quick, convenient option. Â Unfortunately, our absent-minded waitress was exceptionally slow for everything - forgot to bring waters, 2 burgers took forrrr.ev.er. and just generally not attentive service. Â In her defense, I think she was trying to take care of the entire place - still, that shouldn't be our problem. Â
After all that, the food was lackluster, borderline blah, tots not as great as I remember, and just nothing worth coming back for. Â
* I did love and appreciate the Halloween decor - bravo!
Huh, I thought for sure that I had reviewed this bar years ago. Â I keep this joint in my back pocket for all those times when I'm in the area and just need "somewhere." Â Surprisingly, hardly anyone has ever heard of Brehon Pub, but it's a great low-key placeholder/time-killer/group-appeaser type of bar. Â Come here when you want to avoid (or escape) the crowds or the pretension or the cheese of other downtown locales. Â Marking time between theater matinee and dinner reservation, waiting out a rainstorm, meeting an eclectic group for an evening out, grabbing one more drink before calling it a night...you know, that type of place. Â Friday and Saturday nights are no problem--active enough to be fun, but not rowdy, with plenty of seats and a noise level that allows you to converse (or hear the TV). Â
You're still in the 60610, though--so perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised on my last visit when a Bushmills and a coffee with Bailey's set me back $15.25.
My friends mom suggested we come here for lunch on saturday, and since we all LOVE Â a free meal, brehon it was. Â The appeal of this place -- for my friend -- was that she could bring her dog on the patio. Â Its just too bad the dog isn't better behaved. Â That's another rant all its own.
I ordered iced tea, even though the server was being weird about letting me order it. Â I should have listened to her, because it tasted like lemon water. Â I sent that back and ordered a bloody mary with guiness (my servers recommendation). Â It was pretty good! Â
For lunch I ordered the chicken club wrap (sub blue cheese for cheddar, because everything is better with blue cheese). Â The wrap was loosely wrapped, and the filling of the tortilla had WAY too much dressing. Â It was literally dripping with ranch dressing (again, not usually a problem). Â It tasted good though, it was just falling apart. Â
The star of this show, however, has to be the TOTS!! Â I haven't had tater tots since my days at ASU getting them from sonic burger (at 3 am). Â And these tots were the best I ever had. Â They are either like double deep fried, or dipped in batter then deep fried, because they were the CRISPIEST tots I've ever tasted. Â mmmm....taaaater tots.....(drool)
Our server was kind of weird, asking questions of another friend (who ordered a rueben) would you like to add anything else to it? Â He was like, such as,.,,? Â He laughed it off and said, the one on the menu sounds great! Â But its all good, we enjoyed our lunch.
Since I didn't have to pay, my overall satisfaction is high, although if I had to pay, the prices were very reasonable. Â
3 stars for the wrap and the experience, but one whole star extra for those tots!
Nothing overwhelmingly great about this place but it's a nice spot to meet up with friends after work.
$4 well drink specials on Tuesday and different specials throughout the week, nice size bar and it wasn't crowded.
Tip: if you're about to die from sweltering temperatures outside sit at a table in the seat next to the wall. The vent or whatever it is will cool you down instantly. you're welcome.
Lunch on the patio sounded like a wonderful idea. It was a beautiful sunny day with plenty of tables open. Checked in the bar for outside seating - no one around to care really - and went to sit outside. We waited about 15 minutes until we got menus and drink orders. Not a great way to start out.
A co-worker and I were not in a big rush on a nice Friday afternoon so time was not a big issue. With one waitress covering the whole patio seemed a bit ridiculous based on the number of tables. About 40 minutes for 2 sandwiches to come out and she checked on us on roughly 20 minutes intervals. No water refills. Just felt she was a bit bogged down.
As for the food...the Mahi Mahi sandwich was a kind of shrug your shoulders response or bland in other words. Two others joined us for a beer and pointed out - the Mahi Mahi was your first mistake - if you can't hear the ocean don't order fish. I agree it was a mistake for an Irish pub or for any pub. I should have grabbed a burger. Co-worker ordered the Cobb sandwich which looked much more appetizing. Sandwiches and burgers are fairly priced.
Drink specials were 4 dollar bottles of Amstel Light and Heineken. This made me wonder how much they were regularly...$5.75. Ouch. I know it's River North so I can't bitch that much. But when the draughts are nearing the price of menu items its hard for me to swallow.
Overall I don't think I will be coming back to Brehon for lunch...unless someone else offers to pay. And on a side note don't go outside the boundaries of pub fare because you will be disappointed.
I've gone in there a couple times with coworkers at the end of our shift and it's been a generally good experience.
I don't remember who the bartender was my first time there, but the next three times I went, Jen was at the bar. While she didn't know how to make a Mai Thai when I asked for one, she did look it up. I don't expect any bartender to have every last drink memorized (if they do, good for them), but I did appreciate her looking up how to make it rather than telling me to order something else.
Oh, and I loved the Mai Thai she made.
I've only made it there once while the kitchen was still open, but I did get to try the bacon and egg burger with fries. Now, I had been drinking already by the time the food came, so I can't act as if my taste buds were on point, but the food tasted good to me. I get cravings for it while I'm at work sometimes.
While I wish their kitchen was open later, I understand that it's not cost effective for them to do so.
In any event, I really enjoy this bar. It has a nice atmosphere, Jen's great at the bar, and I haven't had a negative experience here in any of my 4 trips.
Went here for a late lunch / early dinner today. The bartender/waitress was amazingly sweet, and allowed me to take my time to decide what I wanted. I ended up ordering one of the chopped salads (with the turkey) and it was really really tasty.
Had a side of tater-tots which were just so great, as I haven't had them in a long time.
Its a great neighborhood place, right off the Chicago brown/purple train. Definitely going to go again.
After a great greenfest experience, there was no better way to cap that then by hitting up Brehon for a meal. Â Actually, we just kind of picked this place on a whim. Â There is actually two sides to this place and we somehow had an entire side to ourselves. Â
I had a portabella sandwich which was decent and combined that with totts. Â Actually, I think our entire table ordered totts and really we might have went through an entire sack of potatoes in the process. Â Just an FYI for all the tott lovers out there, if you get the totts as an appetizer, it is a heaping basket that could be a meal for some people. Â
The pictures on the wall are cool and the service was solid as well.
I've been here a handful of times, and can say that the service each time has always been nothing less than exceptional. Generous pours of Vodka, and the beer selection isn't too shabby either.
I haven't eaten an entree or sandwich here, but must admit, the tator tots are amazing----by far the best I've had in Chicago.
Great, friendly service, decent pricing, and a "pet friendly" outside patio. What's not to like?
I went for first time on Thursday, stayed for three beers with my date, was very happy with the bartender's service, the beer selection, and did not mind it was kind of quiet. I will go  back and try the food sometime soon.
Now, on to an observation of some below commentary. It seems that it is difficult to find parking in the River North area, and that someone wrote a posting with a mild complaint about this way back in April '08, but otherwise gave Brehon a positive review. The initial timely response to this posting was written in Feb. '09 criticizing the Yelper but also providing helpful CTA information to get to this pub. Then another  untimely harrumph was posted last month saying word up to the February guy. This was thirteen months after the initial post!
Isn't this like bemoaning the Pirates victory in the '71 World Series (dammit the Orioles had such a better team, how did they blow that one?), or saying A Flock Of Seagulls had really weird hair back when Reagan was President?
Passed by many times, but went there for the first time on a Thursday for a late dinner. Â
Brehon is a traditional Irish pub - good beer... food and drink specials everyday... I tried the steak sandwich, which was a great deal for just $6.50 - I would go back just for the sandwich! Â Quality cuts of steak, tender, crisp bread, large portion size - mmm!
The friendly staff was fairly attentive (probably because the place was not too packed, but I am not complaining). Â And there is another room in the back that was even less busy than the main bar section... and there was no wait to play pool.
I went here after a gala event a few weeks ago. It was a Sunday night so it wasn't too packed. We all were a little tipsy and had a good time. Drinks were not expensive, especially for being downtown-ish, and the bartender was super friendly.
I'd love to come back and sit in the patio sometime.
Once you walk past all of the pretentious River North bars where the patrons are sipping expensive cocktails and looking down their nose at everybody, you will find Brehon Pub. Â
Brehon is nothing special. Â It's just a plain old bar with a little sidewalk patio, some decent beer specials, and pub grub. Â The bartender pours a strong vodka and tonic and if you happen to get lucky you can wobble over to the Howard Johnson's across the street.
Enjoyed the outside patio on this nice, warm, sunny day with some friends for a quick moment before we headed to our main event for the evening. The patio is a little tight with the positioning of the tables, but we made it work.
Any place that pours a great makers and coke is ok with me, plus they had my Stella on tap! The bartender was a nice guy. I will return soon to try the food.
Seriously, I've never reviewed this place? I've been going here since 1988, when I worked a block away.
Was here last night, with a girlfriend, after a trunk show at WEAR eyewear, with her two optician friends. This is really the best place to go to in River North. It's woman-owned (and she is awesome), it's unpretentious, the bathrooms are clean, the bar itself is clean and it always attracts a wide cross section of interesting people.
It's a bastion of real Chicago in the melange of Rainforest Cafe/Hard Rock Cafe stupidity that River North sadly has a lot of these days.
My friend ran into a friend and former coworker of hers there. Some other guy joined our group when he overheard me mention Matisyahu (a jewish rapper that I sometimes play on my radio show).
Crazy! Random! I always have a good time here, whether it's to have a heads-together discussion with a friend on the state of our lives, or to chat with the random people that wash up on the beach of our presence.
And Stellas are $6 - not a bad price for the otherwise oh, so FABulous and pricey River North.
And RIGHT to the reviewer who calls out the parking complainers. Seriously?! Transit and cabs abound! And he's absolutely right that you shouldn't be drinking and driving anyway - leave the damn car at home.
I live a block from here, and will let you, fair reader, in on a little secret about the way I think:
If you review this place and complain about parking ... you're a friggin' idiot. Â This is 90% neighborhood pub. Â Neighborhood people don't need to drive here. Â
Additionally, it's ONE (1) short block from the Brown Line Chicago "L" stop entrances, and all of a six (6) minute walk from the Red Line Chicago subway stop. Â During rush hour, the #11 and #156 buses are about a block away, and the #66 bus is a block away. Â Not to mention that cabs are so easy to catch in this area that you can accidentally catch them - I've done it.
You know all those "Don't drink and drive" commercials you saw on TV growing up? Â Well, this is the perfect sort of place to heed that advice. Â This is a great pub, but it's not so great that it's worth driving to from the suburbs so I'm really only talking to you city-folk. Â There is no reason for people to drive to this bar - it couldn't be more conveniently situated.
I live in Rogers Park and, as such, I feel like I know a neighborhood bar. Â My friend lives in River North and, as such, can offer me no places of comfort near her house. Â Chili's can scratch a certain itch but it's a rare one.
We wandered half-frozen into Brehon the other night and I was so pleasantly surprised I'm looking forward to going back. Â This is really, truly a neighborhood bar stuck right in the middle of too many name brands and thank god. Â A great atmosphere, the patrons know how to sit around and publicly be social, and the selection of beer on tap is really great. Â And the price is right too.
I didn't give it five stars because I think any neighborhood bar worth its salt might be a little annoyed at a shiny, five-star review. Â So, this is a *symbolic* four star for a great, comfortable place right smack in the middle of an area that I think often takes itself way to seriously.
Well done.
It's a comfy neighborhood bar where you can chill out and watch a game or just meet up with friends for a couple of frosty bevvies. Â Beware of bartenders who are generous with the liquor! Â :)
Parking isn't great, but then again you shouldn't be drinking and driving anyway. Â Be responsible and take a cab so you can enjoy yourself.
I went last night(Saturday, and it was pretty dead, considering we were there til close! The bartenders were really nice and they have popcorn for free if you ask!! There was enough seating, but I'm not sure how it would be if it were more crowded.
I don't love crowded bars, so I guess it hit the spot. There were, however, a shit ton of creepy guys there, and my girlfriends and I, despite being around OUR guy friends still got touched my creepy guys sitting right behind us.
They had darts in the back and 2 outta 5 clean-scale male and female bathrooms.
Good luck finding parking and a spot at the bar on a Thursday-Saturday night 'cause it'll be swarmed with industry people (the kids with the white collared shirts, Gino's ringer t's or the Bubba Gumps t-shirts)
The food isn't bad for lunch but it seems like it's defrosted economy sized nuggets, wings, and various "bar food." The Wisconsin cheese curds are pretty good but the only reason you should really be going in is for the company.
There's plenty of seating available in the first room but it's always better to sit at the bar and shoot the shit with the bartenders anyhow.
Suzy, Jeff, and Cameron are terrific bartenders and can hook you up with good witty antics and winning bartender charm. Pool tables are on the other more intimate side. There is a  pretty good selection on the juke box (and they play La Ley for somehow) and outdoor seating a plus. Ask the bartender for suggestions if you're stuck 'cause they can't steer you wrong.
This used to be my regular bar way back when the whole place was only half the size and the only food they served was microwave popcorn and frozen pizza which they heated up in a toaster oven. Oh, and I think they had hot dogs at lunch time.
Anyway, I didn't care, because this was our bar. It was hardly ever crowded (except on St. Patty's day when it was almost impossible to move), but we always had a great time here.
Maybe I'm just a stick-in-the-mud, but I definitely preferred this place when it was smaller and slightly more intimate, although I've gone back a few times since, and I can't lie, I still love it here. It's got a great low key vibe, cool people, and all the Wildfire employees still hang out here.
It may not be one of the best bars in Chicago, but it's one of my favorites.
Went here for a quick drink after work. It wasn't a great day for me. So I needed some good beer to make my happy feet dance.
Met some friends, and had some brew. Variety of choices of domestic beer. Not a lot offered in tap. Which was disappointing. Our bartendar wasn't very friendly, and he didn't check on us. We had to hunt him down to get some refills. I think another person was trying to get the attention from the barback to get the bartendar, and the dude gave the guy the "bird" Oh my.
Had a salad. Wasn't impressed. It stated that there was taco meat in the taco salad. All I recieved was a load of tortilla strips, romaine lettuce, an ounce or two of crumbled meat, and a glob of sour cream. Gross.
Wasn't the best choice. I rather go here when I've already had too much to drink. Don't eat here. But they did have good music...when it was playing.
Since there were quite a few people sitting outside Brehon's on Saturday I thought it would be a fine place to stop for a brew and a burger. Â We went through the front door to check it out and there seemed to be a lot of regulars chilling up front. Â It was hard to tell who worked here so we finally ended up FOLLOWING the waiter (well I think he was). Â Literally, it felt like we were chasing this guy to another section of the bar and we just wanted to see if it was OK to sit outside. He ignored us. Â In another attempt, we asked the bartender if we could "sit anywhere" or just "go outside." Â He shrugged and said, Â "I don't know." Â
Standing, stupefied in the middle of the bar area, I noticed that one of the regulars was a dog (or maybe it was his first visit, he didn't say). Â I am usually fine with sharing my bar time with a canine friend as long as he or she is well behaved, not vicious, etc. Whatever. Â And I usually am not a germ-freak at all but when I spotted a giant puddle on the floor next to this dog, my appetite vanished. Â Was it pee? Â Did it matter?!? I mean, if I even thought it even MIGHT be pee. . ick ick ick! Â In a moment of clarity, I looked at Mike and said, "Let's just go." Â No arguments there.
Stopped by here the other night for a casual evening. Â Brehon's is a neighborhood place with a friendly staff and predictable food. Â I am told by my Irish friend that I went with, that Brehon means judge which makes sense since the place is owned by a couple of lawyers!
The place is broken up into a bar area and a restaurant area. Â We chose to sit and eat at the bar and talk to Cameron, the friendly bar tender. Â Started with a couple of martinis- not exactly what they probably get requests for, but the glass was chilled and it was a good pour. Â No blue cheese olives, though! Â I'm guessing that most people order one of their many beers on tap or in bottles. Â
As for food- we were out to satisfy our need for bar food. Â Since we had both spent part of our lives in Wisconsin- any bar that offers deep fried cheese curds is okay in my book. Â We also had their Reuben sandwich and a Kobe burger based on the bartender's recommendation. Â The burger was definitely the better choice! Â They forgot to put the sauerkraut on the Reuben and it was a bit dry. Â Next time, I think I'll try the pulled pork sandwich. The fries were good, though. Â Prices are very reasonable.
Stop by, have a beer, grab a burger. Â This place isn't fancy, but you feel at home on your very first visit.
