Used to eat here all the time! Love their specials (especially veal milanese and arctic char!),and their wait staff are all wonderful. Prices are so reasonable and love that it's a BYOB. Â
Reason for the one star as follows... Don't ever order off regular menu...you will be truly disappointed. Specials are fresh and delicious,  regular menu not!  Don't bother craving any particular dish if you happen to have a later reservation because they will more than likely have run out of most of the specials, especially if it's fish.  And speaking of reservations, don't bother relying on that either unless you are one of  the first early seatings.  Whether your party/ reservation is for 2 or 4 or more you are guaranteed to wait a minimum of 1 hr sometimes 2 beyond your time if you have reserved for 7:30 or later. After oh so many occasions of suffering the long waits, (especially out in the extreme cold or heat) I decided to graciously make Elvira  ( the owner) aware of this issue.  She is always so friendly and always visits each table checking on how things are going. Her response to me was shocking!  She laughed instead of apologizing and said "BETTER YOU WAIT FOR ME THAN ME WAITING FOR YOU"!!!  I was so appalled!  In other words She has enough business and could care less if you are waiting ridiculous amounts of time for your reservation to be accommodated.  Well Elvira, good luck to you.  Some day you may be humbled and maybe then will treat your loyal customers with respect.  Unfortunately, you will never see me in your establishment again so don't you WAIT FOR ME!
All I can say is yuck. The service was good but it proved to be another Mexican/Italian Restaurant. The eggplant  was reheated and the capellini puttanesca was WAY too salty. My friends filet mignon was overly salted also. Don't be fooled by the four star average reviews. It's a definite two star unfortunately.
Review Source:One of the best Italian restaurants in the area hands down, and that is saying a lot being that there are many to chose from. Â This is a very small restaurant with approximately 20 tables which I like. Â There are always people eating here which says a lot to me. Â I have not had a negative experience here, nor have I heard anything but positive things about the experiences of others who have dined here. Â The consist quality is what really keeps me coming back. Â Being that it is such a small place, it's apparent that there is no mass quantity cooking going on here. Â Every meal is like home cooked. Â Very polite, pleasurable, and knowledgeable staff too. Â The waiter's seem to be incredibly intelligent when it comes to their knowledge of the dishes, and they seem to be able to memorize the extensive specials list somehow, which is quite impressive when you hear how many dishes there are on this list! Â Their specials list is a menu in of itself, and it's one of those places where I want to try everything as one dish is just better than the rest. Â Cost wise, this place cannot be beat either! Â It is very reasonably priced for a place that serves this standard of quality. Â If you arrive before 5pm I believe when ordering one entree, the second is given at 1/2 price which is amazing. Â They have something for everyone too, and being that it is a BYO establishment it is even more affordable and has even more appeal. Â This restaurant has been around for a while now too! Â It lies in the cut and is really low key, but those locals who know good dining know it's there, and it has a substantial number of regulars. Â This isn't a place where you just go once and never return. Â I give this restaurant a 5 because it seems to excel in every aspect, and I can be quite critical. Â It surely will not disappoint.
Review Source:My husband and I had a wonderful dinner at Buon Gusto on a recent Saturday night. Â The staff were lovely, including when they were able to squeeze us in with a reservation for two when I called on Friday afternoon. Â There was an amazing array of delicious-sounding specials, which our waiter recited with almost encyclopedic knowledge. Â The lobster ravioli appetizer portion was fantastic and I had a very tasty cajun-spiced swordfish for my entree.
The food, the service, the atmosphere...it was all great! Â Having recently moved out to Bergen County from Manhattan, we were thrilled to find such a gem out in the 'burbs!
My wife and I like this place because it is BYO and quality of the food and service are a good overall value. I trully enjoyed my house salad and steak au poivre, which was perfectly cooked medium rare. My wife equally enoyed her branzino Mediterranean sea bass. The tables are a little compacted, but, service here is always good.
Review Source:As a wine merchant dealing in unique and boutique wines I'm used to the scoring systems inherent flaws and biases...can a $10 bottle of wine and a $1000 bottle of wine both get 92 points? Â Obviously yes and obviously both wines are not equal. Â Buon Gusto is the $10 gem that gets the same score as the $1000 bottle because it's a little local boite that under promises and over delivers. Â I've been dining there for 15 years and chef/owner Paul and his lovely wife Elvira never miss a beat. Â Consistency is the great challenge to all restaurants and Buon Gusto has managed to keep me coming back over and over again because I know I will always get a great meal there. Â The wait staff are friendly, knowledgeable of the dishes and attentive, if you like to chat make sure you get head waiter Robert, he's like your cousin from over seas that's dying to take you for a tour. Â As for food, well you know when you are in serious eating establishment when the steaming hot loaf of thick, crusty old world bread is put in front of you...it could be a meal in itself. Â A simple yet tasty house salad of mixed greens, onion, tomatoes in a vinaigrette dressing is included with the meal. Â Chef Paul does a great job of keeping the menu balanced with superb fish, seafood, meat and pasta dishes. Â Vegetarians will also find a lot to choose from. Â While the menu items are all classic italian, what separates Buon Gusto from the rest is the fact that the dishes are not drowning in sauce unlike the dozens of mediocre Italian restaurants crowding north Bergen County. Â The real treats are the daily specials, admittedly a few of the specials have been around for years but I would never want to see them gone. Â My two personal favorites are the butterfly'ed veal chop(veal Milanese) and the Filet Mignon in Cognac peppercorn sauce. Â First the Veal...a frisbee sized portion that is breaded to perfection, tender and served with fresh arugula and large cubed tomatoes. Â I've been to Milan several times and ordered the namesake dish and it never came close. Â Nobody else gets it as tender as Paul. Â There is a second variation of veal that is not on the menu or specials list, you need to ask for it, it's a veal cutlet that's been stuffed with ricotta cheese and broiled...also superb. Â The Filet Mignon(and occasionally the Angus option) is a generous portion, tender and always a perfect medium rare to my specs. Â The Cognac sauce is rich and savory and always lapped up with the house bread. Â In order to show some balance I'll give you two criticisms: Â first while the house coffee is good, the espresso drinks are served a little too hot and are not strong enough(to my taste at least), my second and most annoying complaint is that Buon Gusto books up fast on Friday and Saturday nights and if you want to go there at the last minute prepare to wait an hour. Oh, and by the way, they are BYOB...great food, great service AND great wine(mine)...a trifecta!
Review Source:Hello All, Â my son Marc and his gal Colleen and Cate went out to Buon Gusto yesterday. We heard it was good but we found it to be very good. We brought 2 bottles of nice wine and picked from the special menu. The dishes were served with black linguini that was great. The gravy was out of this world and the bread was kicking. You get a nice bang for your buck here. I look forward to going back again.
Review Source:Thi is my first time eating at this restaurant. I was very impressed with the wide menu of tasty dishes, and the superb service. We brought our bottle of wine and enjoyed it with a perfectly prepared Italian dinner. The hostess was very friendly and the waiter did a great job of keeping the food coming. It's a small, intimate restaurant and after 23 years in business, they know how to keep customers coming back again.
Review Source:Buon Gusto is a hole in the wall. I can't tell you how many times I drove by it without realizing it was there. But boy, we feel like we hit the jack pot with this jersey gem. I felt a little conflicted about letting you all in on my new spot... but it deserves this review.
First of all, the only reason it doesn't have 5 stars is because we've only been once and well, it just felt premature to throw all my eggs in one basket. But wow... YUM-MY!
It's tiny, but well maintained and the main server who also acted as Maitre di seemed to know everyone who walked in the door.
Buon Gusto, thank you for renewing our faith in finding a good restaurant here in this area - (we just moved from NY).
Our meal was superb! Our server was a pro: wonderful, attentive, knew the menu and made excellent recommendations. The wine was perfect - oh yeah, that's cause we brought it! Doesn't get better than BYO :)
So relieved to have great Italian food in our town!
This is one of my favorite restaurants I've been to. I've spent a lot of birthdays and parties here and have always had a great meal. The staff is very attentive, helpful and friendly. On most meals, the owner comes by and checks to see if everything is going well and genuinely seems to care about your opinion.
It's BYOB so get a good bottle of wine and enjoy your meal. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu.
