This is unfortunate because I want neighborhood places to succeed. Â But they gotta figure out how to cook food here. Â Kind of important in the restaurant biz. Blood raw is not medium rare. Â The burger my fellow diner had was so undercooked you could see pink on the outside of the burger. Â It was literally gushing blood. I had the salmon sandwich. Â I bit into it and noticed it was very cool so I thought I may have bitten into a part where the salmon had fallen onto the plate. Â I then took another bite and after chewing thoroughly, realized I was chewing cool, still raw fish. Â Now I like sushi, but at a sushi restaurant where the raw salmon is top grade. Â Not at a burger place where fish needs to be cooked for a reason. Â Highly disturbing experience and unacceptable. The staff remade the food, but the damage was done. Â The cooks need to up their standards ASAP. Â "Make it nice, or make it twice" is not just a silly phrase. Please do better. Â Notably, the regular fries and sweet potato fries were quite good.
Review Source:As soon as I heard a new beer and burger joint had popped up in the OP area, I knew I needed to get out to try it. Â My first mistake was to show up at on a Saturday during the Big 12 tournament - the place was packed, so we decided to save it for another day. Â We went on Sunday for lunch instead and had no problem getting a spot. Â First impressions of this place are that it is tiny...definitely not a place that has a lot of extra space. Â The food menu seems to have the average amount of bar food items - but it was the beer menu that was most disappointing. Â I ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich with cajun fries.
Positives:
-Decent food, but really nothing that stands out.
Negatives:
-For a place that seems to push the idea it's a craft brew and burger place, the beer menu is pretty disappointing and rather spendy.
-Small interior, with a limited amount of seating.
-A little tough to find, it's kind of tucked back on 76th St.
-"Cajun" fries were utterly forgettable and weirdly tasteless
Overall, this was a disappointing trip. Â The food shows promise, but they really need to mix up their menu a bit to distinguish themselves from many of the other beer and burger places in town. Â And please, expand your craft beer selections. Â Having multiple Boulevard brews on tap doesn't make you a "craft brew" bar. Â That's not a knock on Boulevard, but most of their beers are available at every bar/restaurant in the metro.
Usually I visit a place a few times prior to writing a review, but since I'm not sure when I'll be back to Burg and Barrel, I'm going for it! I was really excited when I heard about the concept of this place, and although the new owners definitely cleaned up the joint, I was underwhelmed with my experience.  It does nothing to set itself apart from the other beer/sports bar joints in the Old OP area.  Yes, they have several  types of whiskey, and a couple Boulevard Beers to offer, but this is KC, I EXPECT you to have Boulevard Beer. We tried a couple of appetizers, including the calamari which was fine, not "The best I have ever had" as toted by the bartender making the recommendation, and a couple of other bar food items. I should note that the sweet potato fries appeared to be hand cut, which is a nice touch. I was not impressed at all with the happy hour specials. They have different drinks on special each day, and the only day I thought I would possibly return would be Wednesday for the 4$ Jamison special. And that would only be if my Jamison drinking friends wanted to go (you know who you are!). Otherwise, the food was fine and the drinks were overpriced for the establishment/location.
Review Source:I tried this place twice before I wrote this review.
The interior remodel of this place is wonderful. Â It was thoroughly disgusting when it was 76th Street Bar & Grill. Â The new look is great!!! Â Unfortunately, it is all smoke and mirrors.
The first visit I ordered the calamari appetizer off of the happy hour menu, which was actually pretty good. Â It would have been even better if the bartender, Jonathon, would have put his cell phone down and quit sucking on his drink cup long enough to notice that I didn't have napkins or silverware. Â I was annoyed by the lack of service, so I requested that the El Diablo burger I ordered be switched to a to go order. Â The burger was ok, but naming it El Diablo is a mistake...it misses the mark completely. Â To me, if I order something called El Diablo, that insinuates that it was made by the Devil himself, it will be hotter than hell, and it will burn the living hell out of you. Â No, no, and no. Â Not even the slightest bit of tingle on my lips. Â Tasted like a regular old burger and the fries were soggy as all get out.
The second visit, my girl wanted to see what the remodel looked like, and she saw a salad on the menu she wanted to try. Â We went in, sat down, were greeted pretty slowly. Â We ordered our soft drinks and then 2 grilled chicken salads. Â Our soft drinks did get refilled by the server while we waited for our food, but after 25 minutes the server was nowhere to be found and nobody was addressing that our food was taking so long. Â We got up and walked out.
2 times a loser. Â With Maloney's, The Peanut, and Other Place right on the other side of Metcalf, this place will never make it. Â I certainly won't be back. Â There is nothing special here with the food or the service. Â I recommend you spend your hard earned money somewhere else. Â I don't see this place being here very long.
We visited the burg & barrel on Sunday and had the mushrooms appetizer and burgers. The mushrooms had WAY too much breading and an odd taste. I had the baby Bella burger and my husband had the cowboy burger. The batter on the onion rings had the same breading as the mushrooms.
The food in general was not impressive, and we left with a queasy feeling in our stomach. I ended up getting sick when I got home, and my husband who has an iron stomach and never complains about food felt horrible the rest of the day as well.
The icing on the cake is they are charging $4.50 for pints of beer.....
Overall experience was not good & I would not recommend.
