Staff had amazing service, attentive yet not overbearing. I recommend their Prima Donna (if you're into firmer cheeses) and Brie is def a must.

As for wines- Their sexual chocolate red wine is a To Die For! Very happy with this place! Perfect place for a birthday, anniversary or even a quick bite at their bar. Will most definitely (and eagerly) go back for more :)

Really great little spot in Del Ray! We came here for food and drinks during happy hour  and loved the food and atmosphere. I ordered the Hot Diggity Dog Duo, which was good, but brings the sort of fancy comfort food decadence that should be limited--for the safety of the dinee--to once in a decade or so. It was a battle royale of flavors in my mouth, and the hot-linkish dog brought plenty of big, bold taste. But the toppings packed quite a wallop of their own and in the end, there was one clear winner...my tastebuds. I washed both combatants down with a Green Flash IPA, savoring my victory.

So, to summarize--good food, good beer menu, cozy atmosphere, and did I mention it's primarily a cheese and wine shop up front? Great selection in the case, and you can also buy six packs. We'll have to try this place out for brunch.

I have been here a few times and am always very pleased!!  The restaurant/shop is so cute and great for a date night or just relaxing with friends.  They have great wines, but also really interesting cocktails at different times during the year.  Over the summer they had a delicious lemon drop cocktail and champagne with different mixers!  Just brings something different to the traditional wine and cheese.

The cheese board are great and are priced just in line with their competitors.  The service is always wonderful!!  The staff there is very knowledgable about cheese, wine, and probably anything else you would want to know!  They take the time to explain all the cheeses and how they compliment wine or other drinks.  They are not pushy and allow you to take your time to enjoy your meal and your company!

Only complaint I have, is that they are always out of many of the dishes on the menu..Last time we were there, we ended up having to reorder 3 times due to a shortage in almost all the mac n' cheeses.  I understand they do not make many of their offerings there, but at least tell us up front what you are out of...In the end, it all works out and I am always happy with the food, drinks, and staff.. :)

Cute and quaint little shop/bar/restaurant in Shirlington. I've been here twice; once for lunch and another for dinner with a friend. Service has been exceptional each time, whether or not it was busy. So far, I've tried the lobster mac & cheese and the grilled pimiento cheese. Both were great! I just wish the mac & cheese portions were bigger. I have yet to sample any of the cheeses, but I look forward to sharing a board with some friends in the future.

Oh, and the little helping of chocolate chips that accompanies your check is a nice and unexpected touch.

I had a horrible experience at one of their classes.  I purchased two tickets to a class literally titled "wine and CHEESE Class: Italian Style" as a gift for my wife.  We went to a place name "CHEESEtique" and a class title "Wine and CHEESE class" thinking we would learn something about cheese.  We were wrong.  Unfortunately we learned nothing about cheese, and were subjected to a two hour long pitch of a gentleman trying to sell us a variety of wines he imports and resells.  An employee spent all of 45 seconds listing off the cheeses at the beginning of the course and not another word was said about cheese.  There were eight wines and six cheeses, no one said which wines went with which cheeses or why.  We did receive a small print-out with a very brief description of each cheese, unfortunately it was about 1/3 the size of the wine order form we were constantly referred to throughout the night (the cheese sheet was never mentioned again).  I would have thought some instruction behind paring wines with cheeses (part of the class description) would have been mentioned, but not a word.

I sent a nice email to the owner letting her know my disappointment and received a very rude reply telling me it was my fault for attending a wine course, and not a cheese course.  I'm not exactly sure how I was supposed to know that, if you title your course "wine and CHEESE Class" (verbatim) I think it is fair to expect to learn at least something about cheese from a cheese shop giving a class with the word cheese in its title.  "Two hour high-pressure sales pitch for low-quality wine with an enormous markup" would have been much, much more accurate.

I'd recommend any cheese store in the DC-Metropolitan area over this one.

I love a place that is multi-functional.  This is the definition of that word in practice.

Between the 2 areas separated by a rack to display products you would never expect to find the best grilled cheese sandwiches and mac and cheese in town.  I have to say they are a bit on the pricey side with about 4 ounces for 7 bucks but it's the best 4 ounces of liquid gold and pasta you will spend.

The mac n cheesetique was just mind blowingly good.  I also order the tallegio and onion confit with bacon grilled cheese sandwich which really was orgasmic.  I ordered the broccoli and cheese mac (was good but should've ordered 2 of the mac and cheesetique's)  I had the creamy tomato soup, which was soulful and heart warming on a cold winter day.  I have to admit this probably the best comfort food stop that I have had all year.

My only grip is that parking is a pain and shirlington is definitely not my favorite place but because of this gem, I am willing to forget all my bitching and go and get some awesome food.

I was in a hurry to get home to a hungry wife and daughter but I will try the other half of the restaurant and buy some cheese and some wine next time!

    Cheers and Happy 2013!

Easily one of my very favorite restaurants in the entire GWA area. Amazingly chic but cozy atmosphere, super friendly (and helpful) service, and phenomenal food. I've been here four times in the past two months and have enjoyed every single experience immensely. Great place to bring a friend and try new things!

I will definitely be going back.

Cheese Heaven! A simple bistro in the rear of a cheese shop that would be right at home in Paris. A knowledgeable staff who are capable of navigating you through their offerings, whether you're a cheese newbie or are dangerously aware yourself.

Opt for a cheese and/or charcuterie board, or indulge in a selection of Mac'N'Cheeses. The Lobster Mac with Fontina is decadent.  The sandwiches are also a great option. A complex Grown Up Grilled Cheese paired with a brilliant Tomato soup is comfort food for adults. And the Hot Diggity Dog Duo, two all-beef franks each smothered with a different concoction, is beyond filling. Save room for desert, though-- they currently offer a Bourbon Bread Pudding you'll want to try.

Oh, yeah, brunch. Ricotta Pancakes that practically float off the plate. A Frittata both simple and deep in flavor. And a Mimosa Bucket; a carafe of OJ & a bottle of A. Duboy, and mix your own.

Their wine list has well thoughtout choices, many from labels out of the ordinary, and is nicely priced (go on Thirsty Tuesday, when all bottles are 20% off). Good beer & cider selection too. And true French Press coffee, if you're so inclined.

Guys, it doesn't get any better than this.

(shirlington location) - If you love cheese then you will love this place. If you like a little kick to your food, try the pimento grilled cheese. If you like something a little sweeter, ask for the Honey Goat cheese. It isnt always listed on the menu, but it is in their retail shop. If you have to wait a few minutes to be seated, test some of the cheeses you see displayed and then you can order it if you decide on a cheese platter. THeir tomato soup is delicious as well. And dont forget the wine!!

From the curb it looked like just a wine and cheese store. The type you'd be interested only if looking for a fine wine to gift or a fancy cheese to impress. But in the back laid in wait a small bistro. Past the pungent aroma that greets at the door awaited the host, who set a welcoming tone to my visit. The bar was ample for eating. Tony, the bartender, was cordial, spot on with suggestions and always attentive. The Pear and Gorgonzola flatbread was light, fresh, and with just the right amount of cheese. Enough to fill the craving but not drown its companions. Its presentation was elegant, adding to the appeal. The Cheesetique Cuban was hearty and full of flavor. Portion size was just right. The bubbly Alma Negra Sparkling Malbec (a first for me) was fun to drink (all three glasses). At around $60, not too bad. Not too bad at all...

I love the atmosphere and the premise but no matter what I've tried there, I've never loved the food there unfortunately.  But if I'm craving some wine and some charchuterie and a lovely atmosphere then I will definitely come by.

It was love at first sight. I walked in one night with some girls during the Yelp Ugly Sweater Crawl and I loved this place. I NEED to go back. We came here as a destination and there was a wine tasting. I loved trying the different types of wine and of course bought a bottle. This place is small and cute...VERY CUTE! This is a great casual date night place or a girls night. They have great cheeses like the one made with Guiness beer. We got samples of the cheeses and you get to try a sample of wines they had before buying- which I think is a great idea. I heard their grilled cheese was amazing, I'll be sure to be coming back and buying some wine, cheese and trying out their grilled cheese! Update is soon to come!

Came here on a Friday date night, and this place did not disappoint. The dining area  was buzzing, but we were lucky enough not to have to wait. We split a bottle of Rock and Vine cabernet sauvingon, however next time I'm there I'm going for the Velvet Devil, one of my personal faves. I had the cheesesteak, which was a very interesting twist on the greasy staple of mine. She had a portobello burger, and said it was decent. Service was very attentive and accommodating, and I'd definitely come here again, or possibly check out the old town location.

Came here with a girlfriend last week and really had a great experience!

When I first walked in they had a sample of Smoked Gouda which was SO good -- looking back I wish I had picked some up on my way out.

The service was fantastic.  Our server was super nice and I loved that she gave us suggestions and was able to answer all our questions.

For dinner, I had a mimosa to drink which was a perfect blend of orange juice and champagne -- they didn't overdo the juice or the champagne.  My friend and I split three items: Beer Cheese, Mac N Cheesetique and the Spinach Pancetta Salad.  It turned out to be so filling that that's all we could really order.  The Beer Cheese was delicious and came out nice and hot -- the bacon flavor was prominent which we really enjoyed.  It was melted and gooey and came with crostinis which paired really well with the cheese.  The Mac N Cheesetique was delicious as well -- again it came out hot and the mixture of Gouda and Asiago was a delicious one.  I wasn't too impressed with the salad (which docked a star) as there wasn't enough dressing, the pancetta didn't taste fresh and I wasn't a fan of the bleu cheese (the bleu cheese thing is my fault though, I know I don't like bleu cheese).  Throwing chopped dates into the salad wasn't my favorite either -- I would've much more preferred dried cranberries.

Overall we had a great experience and I'd definitely come back!

P.S.: I love that they bring out chocolate chips at the end :)

I've been a big fan of Cheesetique's Del Ray shop for years and I am happy to report that their Shirlington location is just as charming as her older sister.

I stopped in for a wine tasting during the Yelp Ugly Christmas Sweater Shopping Crawl last week and was very impressed with the friendliness and knowledge of the staff as well as their vast wine selection which was guaranteed to please any palette or budget. We all fell in love with the Les Pouches Saumur Chenin Blanc so much so that half of the group ended up taking a bottle home.

What's free wine without some free cheese? The dudes behind the cheese counter was happy to slice up a few cheeses, make some suggestions and answer any questions I had. I was especially impressed with how smooth and creamy their buffalo mozzarella and a chocolate cheese log that looked like salami!

I can't wait to come back for their grilled cheese and a bowl of their famous tomato soup!

We came here for a wine tasting on a Thursday night.  The shop is small, yet packed with an impressive variety of wine and cheeses!  The staff is very accommodating, knowledgeable and was eager to let us sample an array of cheeses.  As for the four wines we sampled, they were all super fabulous and exceeded all of my expectations.  This was my first visit to any kind of wine and cheese shop, so it really opened my eyes.  I will be back to bug the staff for more pairing tips!

What accounts for a mass of 5-star ratings and a handful of 2-stars? Cheese. Meaning, if you are going to Cheesetique because you love wine, or beause you're looking for a sit-down meal and expansive menu, you're not going to give this place 5 stars.

On the other hand, if you love cheese, then immediately do the following:
    1) read Jesus J's review
    2) GO!

This is a cheese-lover's paradise, though all the food on the menu is very fresh and well-prepared.

The Grown-Up Grilled Cheese is simple but delicious comfort food, especially with a bowl of creamy tomato bisque for dunking.  The grilled cheese with caramelized onions is messy but disgustingly good.  The gjetost tastes of salt caramel and bacon and banana (I tried it with plain bread - it's still good, in case you have a nut allergy).

The Mac 'n Cheesetique has the perfect blend of richness and texture.  The gluten-free version is not bad - the texture is not quite as pleasant, but the flavor is nearly identical. The portion is served in a ramekin, not a big bowl - but you're going for flavor vs. volume, this is just right.

But it's not just the cheese... The lamb is beautifully cooked with excellent flavor and very tender, with fresh greens and an excellent tziki-style sauce. The Nicoise salad is one of the best and I've had outside France (old-school doesn't include potatoes, but does use canned - not fresh - tuna, and I promise this tuna has nothing in common with the nasty stuff of your childhood!).

There is a cheese and/or charcuterie board, which is enough to be a light main, and the fromage fort is a cheese-lovers foodgasm.  I love that it always has a slightly different flavor, owing to the different ratios of 'scrap cheese' going into it on a given day. Burrata is mozarella curds wrapped in a mozarella ball, served with olive oil, basil, and tomato... or, take some home and douse it with white truffle oil, a sprinkle of sea salt and cracked pepper.

But i would be remiss for not mentioning the service, too. I agree with Jesus J. - the people at Cheesetique really like what they do, and they want to share that with you.

There's a reason it made it onto the Washingtonian's Bargain Restaurants list... and it's a great date restaurant - there's tons of stuff to talk about all around you!  The wine selection is small but has a lot of geographic diversity, and is designed to compliment the cheeses.

And speaking of .... we think Grape and Bean is wonderful - but it isn't a cheese shop, just like Cheesetique isn't a wine shop... and while you can make the basic grilled cheese cheaper at home, I can make a burger at home cheaper than I can buy it at a cafe, too... but I would rather pay to eat a superlative version at Et Viola or Cafe Belga. And superlative is what Cheesetique is.

Cute place for brunch and stocking up on cheeses. I was hoping that the brunch menu was more expansive, such as including the following: freshly squeezed OJ and eggs Benedict, and more options with the entrees. The Croque Madame was quite good-great consistency in the runny egg atop the grilled ham sandwich. I'm inspired to make my own at home sometime! I could only choose one side, so I went with the potatoes. I would have liked to have had the option to choose another (other options include fruit and bacon), but actually the entire meal was quite filling!

Where to begin...I live in Silver Spring and go to Cheesetique once a week.  That's right - I drive right through the District and bypass all the great restaurants that are scattered throughout its neighborhoods to visit this Cheesetique location.  Why?  Because this place rocks.  The food and wines are outstanding and the service is top notch.  I can also vouch for the Del Ray location.  The owner(s) is(are) doing it right.

The front of the restaurant houses shelves of wine and beer (note: good beers such as Belgian) with a large display of available cheeses and meats located by the cash register.  There are plenty of samples to try and the folks that work there know their cheese!  They provide great recommendations given your tastes and also do a good job pairing cheese with their partners in crime - the wines.  The back portion of the restaurant has a bar and a dining area, with plenty of tables to sit varying party sizes.

Now onto the good stuff.  I've had quite a handful of different dishes.  My favorite, by far, is the Mac 'N Cheesetique.  It's a small bowl filled with mac and cheese, scattered with bread crumbs on top.  It's made using truffel oil, multiple cheeses, and is ridiculously good.  I can't get enough of it.  The tomato soup (with sprinkled Dubliner cheese) is a good appetizer for this dish.  The Fromage Fort is a great appetizer, especially when you're not dining solo.  They take all of the excess cheese they have for the day and literally make a fondue out of it with white wine and herbs mixed in.  When it comes to salads, the Nicoise salad can't be beat.  It comes in a massive bowl decorated with Spanish tuna, potatoes, tomatoes, olives, greens, etc.  I'm confident even Ron Swanson would enjoy this salad.  One stand out dish is the Gjetost & Banana sandwich.  It's a grilled cheese sandwich with Norwegian Gjetost and banana inside cranberry bread.  I thought the cranberry addition would be too much, but it's amazing how well it goes with the cheese and bananas.  Do yourself a favor: get the bacon with this dish.

Desserts: chocolate mousse is really good.  Generous portion served with whipped cream on top.  The Nutella panini is great, too (everything with Nutella in it is fabulous, right?).  The stand out dessert for me is the key lime pie.  Now listen up - here's the important part.  I've been to Florida dozens of times.  I've tried dozens of key lime pies.  Nothing, and I mean nothing is comparable to Cheesetique's key lime pie.  It has just the right amount of tanginess and the crust is out of this world.  I was skeptical of key lime desserts until I tried this one.  It's solid.

Staff: Awesome with a capital A.  Very friendly, attentive, funny, everything you'd want in a server.  I've also stayed with my party way past the point of paying for the dinner and the servers have continually come to check on us and never once tried to rush us out.  The thing I noticed about the folks here is they genuinely seem like they enjoy working here.  Everyone seems to get along and everyone's always in a good mood.  It creates such a great atmosphere.

They sometimes have awesome specials like getting 10% off a bottle of wine (to go) for dining in and they have free wine tastings.  This location has fun, little events like when they had a board of cheeses from all around the world and you had to try each cheese and guess where it was from.  I'm awful at this, but it was fun and tasty nonetheless!  I really hope one day they'll open a location in NW DC or in downtown Silver Spring.  Until then, I plan on continuing my weekend lunches at this spot.

Great selection of cheeses. Great staff and a nice atmosphere.

Really though, my heaven would be a cheese shop, so this place couldn't really be better for me. The fresh bread is also delectable, of course crusty and fluffy and chewy, the perfect accompaniment to your cheesy goodness.

Pop is for a quick cheese injection and swoon over the counter for a delectable few moments. Or take a seat at one of the high tops and take your time.

The Bottom Line:  Go and buy a cheese and bread you enjoy, put the cheese in the bread and use a panini press or waffle iron, if you want to be creative, and you will have a product that is the same and much cheaper.

For a fancy grilled cheese or an adult mac and cheese in a child's size bowl, come on in and drown it down with overpriced wine or just go to the Curious Grape where both food and wine are superb and worth the price.

I have been to both Cheestiques multiple times. It is one of my favorite eateries in the area. The thing about the second location in Shirlington is that it is just as consistently good as the Del Ray location. There is no difference in the quality of food or service between the locations. Sometimes restaurants will expand and the new one won't be as good as the original, but that is not the case here. Both are stellar establishments. I highly recommend the Mac n Cheesetique. One of the most delicious things I have ever eaten.

The one leg up the Del Ray location has is the brunch on Sundays.

Oh wow.  I have yet to be disappointed and I've already been, like, many time, you know?

Really nice cozy place with awesome staff.  Drinks are excellent and they have great happy hours.

The food is just, delish.  Not a huge selection, but I prefer a smaller menu done right.  Paired with a great wine, the good life, ya' dig?

Anywho, why are you still reading this?  Your behind should already be in a seat looking over the menu.  Save me spot!

Cheestique was one of the highlights of my 2 years living in the DC Metro area. First off, I'm originally from the Philly and I know what good food tastes like. Most food in DC & Northern VA is mediocre and over priced. I left most restaurants feeling disappointed. Not Cheestique though...

Both locations are great and have similar atmospheres. Del Ray's a little bit bigger now and their new dining space is cozy and romantic. You can't go wrong with any of the wine and cheese...let your preferences guide you. They even have a a chalk board near the bar that clearly outlines which cheese type of cheese is good with certain types of wine. You can't go wrong!

In my opinion, the grilled cheeses and the lobster mac 'n cheese were always the highlight of the restaurant. Mmmm...add a little bacon to your grilled cheese of choice and you're in heaven.

Deserts were a-ok. I usually preferred going to Best Buns down the street for a cupcake afterwards, but Cheestique's Whoopie Pie, Cheesecake, and Key Lime pie are all decent and worth the money if you like those types of deserts.

Lastly, the staff at Cheestique are great! One time my husband ordered something with chicken and it was a bit undercooked and the waitress was super apologetic about it and the manager came out to apologize too. They told us that that doesn't ever happen...we had been there many times before and never had a problem so I think that goes to prove that it was just a fluke. Not only were they extremely sorry, but they made my husband an entirely new meal and we both go free desert.

why of why have i not been here sooner!? I live so close and yet just overlooked this place. they have mixed cheese and charcuterie boards where you have a mix of different cheeses and meats you can choose from. I definitely liked the softer cheeses and with the roasted figs it was delightful. We also ordered the Gjetost and banana grilled cheese WITH BACON added. OMG. heavy in a bit. sweet and salty, with a little bit of cheese ooey goodness. i loved! i want to go back RIGHT NOW and try more cheeses, other grilled cheeses, or maybe their mac and cheese and gorge myself with their wide selection of beer and wine. i think this is my new favorite spot! :)

Cheesetique is cool because it's a combi shop & restaurant. Their cheese selection is great - lots of variety. I don't like their display case though. It's low and you have to stoop or crouch to look inside at the delectable cheeses since there is only a vertical window to look through. I like set-up at another awesome cheese shop that will go unnamed (*cough Arrowine cough*).

Anyway, they also sell wine, craft beers, cheese accoutrement, little tools and gift baskets, etc. Their beer and wine selection isn't huge but they have good options and variety. Overall the prices are decent. I wouldn't call it a deal but they are comparable to other fine cheese vendors.

We also dined there on a Thursday night. It was relatively full but we were able to get an outside table quickly. I got the Sausage Mac & Cheese and the wife got a Grilled Caprese sandwich. I was expecting a little more quantity with the mac & cheese (it comes in an individual dish heated in the oven) but it was just as well because it was rich and pretty filling. They put onions and mushrooms in it as well which gave subtle additional flavor.

I ate half of my wife's Caprese sandwich. Not bad. It was on ciabatta and came with a small side salad. It could have used more pesto/basil though. Good service!

Come here for cheese, deliciously creamy delightful cheeses.... but everything else... well... I dunno... I'll have to try again.

We got the cheese board with 6 different cheeses which comes with bread, mustard seed, grapes, and I think some sort of fig jelly. Each cheese was distinct and very tasty, I really can't say one bad thing about the cheese board. What was really sad is with all the amazing cheese you see in the display case when you walk in, only 10 are actually offered on the menu. I think this place should get rid of some of the food items and offer more cheeses and wine flights since that seems to be the true focus of this cute lil establishment.

They offer 2 wine flights.... luckily they are wines I hadn't tried, I enjoyed getting to taste the 3 different sonoma valley reds for $14, but 2 pinots and zinfandel is not what I was hoping for. Cali is known for their cabs... Anyways, I thought it was a bit ridiculous that to buy  a full glass of any of those wines was over $10 for each. A little excessive for no-name brand wines that didn't eactly knock my socks off.  It would be nice if they offered more wine flights and perhaps ones that pair with their current cheeses of the week or however they decide the cheeses on the menu.

Overall great place, nice peaceful atmosphere, fun almost retro decor, and pretty good service. Only advice, focus on the cheese and since its a wine shop too... get people hooked on more of both by offering more of both on the menu instead of the other food items.

Cheesetique is a neighborhood jewel. We recently had a girls' night out for dinner at the Del Ray location. They sat us fairly quickly for a Friday night and we sat in the plush couches in the back part of the restaurant. (Alfresco dining is also a nice option.)

One of the best parts about this restaurant is that the staff is so knowledgeable. You can ask them about anything on the menu they are happy to give recommendations and offer pairings. The grilled cheese with a simple bowl of tomato soup is bursting with flavor and is simply addictive.

While I haven't purchased anything from the cheese shop, I appreciate the selection of jams, crackers, and other gourmet food items.

What a delightful place!  I wish I could write two reviews though: one for the cheese shop and the other for our dining experience.

    The Cheese Shop:
Even on a very crowded evening over the weekend, the staff was polite and helpful.  They treated me as if I was the only customer there so that I didn't feel rushed or pressured into making a quick decision.  They offered endless samples of various cheeses and made knowledgeable suggestions as to what I might prefer and how much I would need based on my party's size.  I felt that the prices were very very reasonable too.

    The Restaurant:
We went on a Saturday afternoon around 3:00.  We had previously seen how crazy it could be in the evening and luckily went at a less crowded time.  We were seated immediately at a lovely table in the back corner.  Many of the parties were couples waiting for other couples or small girl groups.  It was a nice buzzing atmosphere.

They have an amazing full bar selection.  I had the special Sangria which was amazing!  Although I had never had it similar to this, it was spiced and fresh tasting with thin slices of fresh-cut apple over ice.  The cinnamon undertones were lovely and paired nicely with our Cheese Plate.  We got a selection of two cheeses and a meat.

The waiter was attentive and timed everything very well.  He saw that we had run low on some of the white bread and offered to bring us more (and promptly did so).

We each ordered a different mac and cheese.  He got the Mac and Cheestique (which was okay).  I got the Goat Cheese Mac and Cheese which was amazing-- well, if you like goat cheese that is.  Even though they were rather small, we did not finish the serving as it was such a cheese overload by that point.

For dessert, we got the Chocolate Mousse which was a very large serving and crazy rich.  I wish it was a third of the size and half the price.  It would have also been great with some berries to add some tartness to the rich chocolate.

Overall, a great meal.  I'd love to try the grilled cheese next time or skill an entree entirely by doubling the Cheese Plate.

    We will certainly be back.

This place is unbelievable..... wine and cheese shop with a demo almost always going on on the weekends. You can custom-make your own buckets of wine and cheeses too!!!!!

Then there is a luncheonette counter and dining area in the back.....VERY cute gals work here. :)

I saddled up to the counter and got the Mac N Cheesetique........nice sized bowl and very cheesy and tasty!!!!! $8.00

Then followed up with the 5 cheese flat bread with tomato and basil $9.00 on a cutting board. Delicious!!!!!!!

Only 2 locations? This place would do well in almost any neighborhood. Period. Good job, Jill and Maud!!!!!

A friend and I had an early weekend lunch at the Shirlington Cheesetique.  It definitely looked like the spitting image of the location in Del Ray...guess it works for them.  We had a friendly waitress who answered our questions about the food, and we didn't wait very long for everything to come out.  The entire menu looked so good, I decided I'll need to come back to try everything at least once.  (Another review mentioned an appetizer-only menu...perhaps she meant in the evening?  Otherwise, I disagree because there were a lot of full meal options.)

Our French press coffee was really good, but no free refills so we had to order a second pot.  My friend had the tomato soup and grilled cheese with four types of cheese.  She seemed to love her food.  I had the Gjetost grilled sandwich (a Scandinavian cheese and bananas on a walnut/cranberry wheat bread).  It was savory and delicious, though I wouldn't have minded a few more banana slices.  The side of greens was very tender and fresh.

The dining room was full of energetic lunchers as we finished up.  On the way out, my friend bought me a block of the Gjetost cheese as a thank you for lunch.  I had a great time and look forward to coming back.

Aside from the awning -- which is retro adorable -- Cheestique Shirlington is Cheesetique Del Ray's twin.  Same set-up, same menu, same fabulous cheeses and wines.

Husband and I have been going to Cheestique in Del Ray for many years, tho, and are fiercely loyal devotees.  Husband threw me a surprise 30th birthday party there with our nearest and dearest, we visit nearly every Saturday morning after the Del Ray Market to re-up our cheese supply, and it's the site of many a date night.  So, I'm not sure there's anything Cheesetique Shirlington could ever do to sway me away from its big sister.  I like Del Ray about a million times better than the new Shirlington to begin with, and this outpost is about as "Shirlington" as it gets, with overcrowding and long waits to dine on popular evenings.  Best to buy your cheese and accoutrements and hightail it, or eat in during a weekday should you have that luxury.

Still, it's a Cheesetique.  And I *love* Cheesetique.

Wine and cheese...what more could you ask for?

I went here for the first time last week with a friend, who had been to the Cheesetique in Del Ray and loved it. We split a cheeseboard and got two types of goat cheese and a third soft cheese (I can't remember the name at the moment). The cheeseboard comes with different things to eat it with and they pair together nicely. Though I wasn't sure why the baby pickles were included... We each ordered an entree and I was pleasantly surprised by the price of the entrees. It's between 8-12 dollars for a gourmet grilled cheese or one of their specialty mac and cheeses . I had the cauliflower and pancetta mac and cheese. Highly recommend you trying this!

Also had great service; our waiter made good wince suggestions. Cheeesetique also has a pretty decent wine deal on Wednesdays. Excellent experience overall and I'll say it, I am in LOVE with Cheesetique.

    Cheesetique 2.0

I was horrified to read the 2 star reviews after visting this location over the weekend. As an Elite Yelper, a Del-Ray Cheestique regular and a former waiter I'd like to throw in my 2 cents.

First, I'll admit that I was dubious about the new digs.  How can a carbon copy be as good as the original? I have to confess that I was intent on not liking it from the moment I stepped into the shop. I arrived with a hunger headache from hell and I left with a fully belly, a buzz and a smile.

Ready for some well seasoned perspective? Right this way madame and monsieur for some Q&A style reviewing...

For the original regulars; Shirlington vs. Delray you say?

Have no fear! I think it was a smart move for the owners to carbon copy their mother ship and to replicate it in the former location once occupied by the well know, Curious Grape wine store. Not only is this addition an exact replica, but familiar faces from the mother ship graced us with their knowledgeable presence.

But Monsieur Danny, what about the comparison to the grilled cheeses with an the Applebee's kids menu?

Oui Vey, all the way! While I did not have an opportunity to enjoy their Grilled Cheese sandwiches, I did grab a menu on my way out the door yesterday.
Would Applebee's utilize upscale products? Here's a sample of ingredients that you can depend on from their grilled cheese selections:
Prairie Breeze Cheddar, 3-year cheddar, Dragon's Breath, Dubliner, Black Forest Ham, Gruyère, Manchego, Jamon Serrano, Swedish Gjetost...to name a few.
So the comparison to Applebee's is suspect and potentially a shenanigan based on the aforementioned ingredients. What kind of child would have a sophisticated palette for the likes of these upscale offerings?

But how was YOUR meal? Applebee's worthy?

We started with the 3-cheese board and enjoyed the Sexy Chèvre, a blue cheese and a hard cheese. (forgot the locations of all three and forgot the names of the last two.) As always, I never met a cheese I didn't like.
David ordered the Gluten-free Mac and Cheese, made with potato pasta and topped off with gluten-free cracker crumbs. Um, can we say a cheese explosion? Ba-ba-ba-BOOM! I ordered the Pear and Gorgonzola flatbread which helped me rock a euphoria.  What's not to like about Gorgonzola Dolce, fresh pears, toasted walnuts and the hint of sweetness brought on by the drizzle of port-balsamic reduction? It satisfied my lunch-time craving while appeasing my sweet tooth simultaneously. There is no comparison to Applebee's here, folks. Applebee's  is in the minor leagues and Cheesetique won the World Series!

How do you respond to the accusations that the staff does not anticipate the needs of it's diners?

As a former waiter, we all have our off nights in the weeds. C'mon waiters out there in cyberland, help me out! Also, a new location is permitted to have growing pains. Now I was there on a BUSY Saturday afternoon and I witnessed none of this. As a matter of fact, I read the bad reviews AFTER I returned from lunch so that I may form my own, OBJECTIVE opinion. (Sorry for yelling- lies no I'm not)

Here are some STAFF HIGHLIGHTS from my experience:

I had not one, not two, but SIX waiters effectively delivering a wonderful team service experience. I'm talking about service with a smile, water refills BEFORE I reached the bottom of the glass, a quality check, people clearing plates BEFORE I stacked them myself and the list goes on. Even the cheesemonger offered me a sample of the Guiness cheese when I asked the cashier about the product.
I secretly quizzed the staff with the intention of writing this review and they WON THE PRIZE for BEST staff of the week! I asked them about specialty items and they were even able to tell me that the 'Sexy Chèvre' cheese was made in (oops forgot to jot that down) but then cherries and Belgium liquor truffles were added in house for a Valentine special.

Okay, Danny Boy, you enjoyed yourself but others say that the experience comes at a cost... and what about the wait to get in?!

Fine cheeses from around the world. Imported fine wine. Specialty beers. Folks, this is not Kendal-Jackson and Sutter Home wine from 7-11 served with a Velveeta cheese ball that Aunt Flo brought to the party. Cheesetique serves up quality goods that are meant to be savored and enjoyed with good conversation. It's almost a European dinner service where you get a chance to let your food settle and your beer buzz or wine buzz dissipate.

    Any last thoughts, Monsieur Danny?

The only thing that I missed about the Delray Cheesetique is the location. Delray offers that old town feel that is reminiscent of a more simplistic era. Shirlington has matured like the rest of Northern Virginia. It's a hectic hotspot with lots of honey for the urban bees. But In closing, the Arlington Cheesetique is a classy little lady who deserves to be treated like one.

I LOVE this place. It gets crowded very early, so try to get there as soon as possible (they do not accept reservations). I recommend getting a cheese board and letting each person pick a cheese. My favorite is the Comte cheddar- so delicious! They have a splendid selection of gourmet mac-n-cheeses and also some very cool "grilled-cheese" sandwiches that are definitely out of the box. If you need caffeine, do their french pressed coffee. And for something a little more adult, try a hot toddy.

If you have time on your way out, the front part of the restaurant is a shop selling meats, cheeses, beers, wine and other treats (like this delicious amaretto honey!)

    Bon Appétit

Cheesetique in Shirlington is open! It is basically the same as the shop in Del Ray -- there's a cheese and wine bar with the same menu as the one in DR, and of course there's a deli-style cheese and meat counter. Some of the specialty items I saw included chocolate bacon, various spreads such as olive and figs, hibisicus flowers in syrup to put in your champagne, and truffles. They also sell cheeseboards and knives, and I noticed they had a few quality beers in the fridge as well. The seating area looked to be the same size as DR, but I think the merchandise area may be a little smaller.

IMO, it's a step up from the Curious Grape, but don't fret, CG lovers: CG is actually reopening in the larger retail space down the street.
