We discovered this place on accident.  It was near our car rental pick up place and hotel.  I really enjoyed it here, no amazing view but everyone was friendly enough.  The salad bar was great and I ordered the Top Sirloin Twilight special for $14.99 which came with the salad bar and potato. Great for the price.  If I lived in Ft. Lauderdale, I'd definitely go back over and over again.  We also went to Shula's on the Beach the week before....meat quality was great but service sucked and everything else was just mediocre - nothing spectacular for almost the SAME thing we got at Chucks for $54 we paid $160 at Shula's.

We were greeted by a  really nice guy and that was it.  Our waiter had better things to do and disappeared in the middle of dinner.  I will say the waiter that finish up with us was great.
Salad Bar- Small bar in the back of the restaurant with lettuce that wasn't cut up, and salad toppings .  It was good, nothing to rave about.  Very bad  area for it since if you get more then 2 people at a time

Soups- French Onion really good, great cheese done the way we like really good
However the waiter brought it out as we sat to eat our salads. I asked him not to put in our dinners until 5-10 minutes after we finish eating our salads and soup.  I like to eat my soup hot so having the salad in front of me and now the soup not only are the tables not big enough for it, one of them isn't going to be enjoyed.

Our waiter disappeared and we got the best waiter. He took over all the tables and was on top of everything! I ordered Bacon wrapped fillet - sounded good- think again . I ordered it medium, it was well done and tasted really funny.  My husband ordered a strip.  Now if your use to good steaks, with flavor then don't' eat here.  His steak was tender, done properly but had no flavor, his potato was good.  My father had a sirloin , no flavor.  My mother had her chopped steak which was okay. Still waiting on my meal- finally 10 minutes after my husband finished his meal, my meal was ready. On the plate sat a lone raw fillet, my veggies now gone nothing else on the plate. The fillet was raw, it was obvious at that point that I wasn't going to be having dinner with my family.  Check please, gave the meal to my father who will cook it and never, ever make the 1/2 hour drive to this place again.  Not once did any management come over tosee what the problem with my fillet was nor did they care.

Welcome to Chuck's Steak House aka Death's Waiting Room. I sat at the bar to eat but the bartender took over 10 minutes to greet us. There were several other older patrons in the bar area who were receiving more attention. I ordered the "black diamond steak" which was the house specialty with a french onion soup. Soup came out fairly quickly but when I asked the bartender for bread, he suggested I go over to the salad bar and grab some myself. He was clearly too busy to do it himself or ask a server....HAH! The steak was a good cut of meat but seasoning was very bland, probably because of the old people complaints. When the check came, the bartender asked me twice if I needed change, I had $60 and the total was $45. This jack*** wanted a 33% tip! Suffice to say, I will not be returning. Can't wait for this place to be bought out.

What a Salad Bar ! I have lived here over two years, seen Chuck's but just moved on until last week when I had visitors from Los Angeles. The service was fast and friendly the steak was very good but with every meal you get the salad bar, just great. It was so good we went back two more times within a week . Can someone pass the steak sauce  ?

I went to google read reviews before go there, and usually that'll help. However, not this time.
We stay at hotel nearby, and we went to other Chuck's before, but this one not even OK!!! The waitress send salt taste Sprite to my kid, I told that waitress the Sprite taste not right. Guess what, the waitress said that I am lying!!! How terribly rude!!! And I walk to front desk, told their manager that Sprite has no sweet taste, only salt taste, and she doesn't care.
And I ask a waiter pack our left over chees cake, he pissed-off......
The place is old and uncomfortable, food is so so, servants are rude. Two of us only spend $40 for a dinner, cheap is the good thing only.

This is not the nicest restaurant you'll ever go to, but there is something nostalgic about the 60's decor and familiar food.

The service was very good and the food, also. It is straightforward, don't expect anything new, but there is self parking and great value here.

This is a simple rather bare bones steak house offering a decent cut and portion of meat and a salad bar at a reasonable price. The ambiance is fairly decent though I confess my preference for their other location on East Commercial and their loyal customer following over the years at both locations is a testament to their reliable, consistent standards and good service. It certainly can not be confused with top end steak houses either in quality or in price, but what you get and what you have to pay for it isn't a bad deal. Besides that, the place is clean, the décor is simple, no big frills, but decent and there is generally adequate pain free parking available.

Being a steak house, whenever I go here, I of course have steak. Why anybody would order fish in a steak house baffles the living heck me but some do as did one in my party. Trying a bite of it, I didn't think it was that good, but then that isn't what they claim to be any good at. I suppose it has to be on the menu and is on the menu because there is a popular demand for it to be there, however, my suggestion would be to stick with steak or go elsewhere.

For a simple decent cut of meat done in traditional American style at a reasonable price, Chuck's is rather difficult to beat.

We always like this place! The steaks are good and there is an excellent salad bar! i think their prices are reasonable for what you get.  The reason for the four stars is on occasion we send the steaks back to be cooked a little different, but most of the time we dont have to do that.  When we do, they are always good the second time!

3 1/2 stars. Had not been here in many years. Nothing has changed. Decent salad bar, perfectly cooked filet with one side for $25. Nice glass of Charles Krug cab for $11. Good service. Out the door happy.Remember this is not Capital Grille or Mortons but your wallet will be a lot happier.

Chuck's claims to have invented or been the first to introduce the "steakhouse and salad bar" concept back in the 60s. I also learned they started in Hawaii, which was interesting. Either way, there are not that many of these type of places around anymore. Clientele is mostly older. The restaurant seemed familiar to me even though I'd never been. It reminded me of when my Dad used to take us to Steak 'N Ale when I was a kid back in the 80s.

We were invited there last night by some older friends and it was OK. Salad bar was fresh and we liked the chilled salad plates and the variety of veggies & salad toppings. The salad bar is included with dinner. Service was good. For our meal, everyone had steaks. I had the Black Diamond steak, which was seasoned top sirloin and I got it w/ a baked potato. It was decent, but did not have a whole lot of flavor for what it was supposed to be. My lady got some kind of teriyaki-marinated steak that she also thought was just OK. Steaks here run around the $18-$25 range, so it is not a high end steakhouse, but it's not super cheap either. I wouldn't object to coming here again if someone suggested, but I probably won't make it a point to visit Chuck's again as nothing I ate really impressed me.

This is just a short lunch review.

Chuck's has been around a long time. This is not fancy high-end steakhouse. It is a joint and the inside has not been updated since perhaps Reagan was in office.

I go here because I enjoy the salad bar. This is a nice lunch option as you get to enjoy a make your own salad and can add chicken, fish, steak, soup, or chili to it.  The salad bar has chilled plates and lots of veggie choices.  A nice little touch is the bread at the salad bar tends to be warm.

I have had the chili and the chicken as add on options. The chili bowl is hearty and decent. It certainly will fill you up.  The chicken almost always is dead on cooked perfectly.  It is juicy and has not been dried out. I tend to order it blackened. Be prepared that the blackened version is spicy. Also be prepared that the protein add on tends to come near the end of you finishing your salad.

As good as it gets in Ft. Lauderdale.

Been going there for decades and never had a bad meal. Probably the best tasting salad bar in Broward County (not the biggest mind you - but best tasting).

Excellent service, relaxed atmosphere and superb food. Prime Rib and King Crab are hard to beat. Perhaps a tad on the pricey side but easily worth the extra few dollars when compared to chain "steakhouses." And certainly a lot more affordable than places like Ruth Chris and in my opinion better food.

I only wish I could afford to eat there more often.

Looks like the generic restaurant in a strip mall... the sign itself is straight up 1990s sitcom.  Inside is spacious in the Floridian sense.  I enjoyed the live music (Tom Petty covers, '80s classic rock mix).  As for the cuisine, nothing extraordinary.  I ordered the beef kabob medium well with teriyaki sauce (best part).  Came with sauteed mushrooms (not bad) and rice pilaf (hard to mess that up).  The salad bar is plentiful, which is good because there are no vegetarian dishes on the menu.  Granted it's a steakhouse, but not even pasta people?

Also tried the sir chuck steak (overdone, cheaper cut of meat, stick with the kabob).  Overall, nothing memorable.  Average food.

The sirloin steak was perfectly cooked, the sweet potato was small, but tasty. The French onion soup was mediocre though. Not bad overall.

3 or 4 stars - so i will be generous and round up.  Here's why:  DRY Mahi Mahi.  Uck!

Service, however, for our large group of 21 was great and many folks enjoyed their strip and filet mignons.  I shoulda gotten the beef.  Serves me right for ordering fish at a steak house. I probably should mention that this was a wedding reherasal dinner - and we had a limited number of menu choices - but for the price I expected white-glove service and top-nothc food.  Most of the food did NOT live up to that.

Delicious Key Lime pie for dessert - the REAL thing.  (Pale yellow - not neon green.)  French onion soup has a yummy cheese and bread gratinee top but the stock itself is OVERLY salted - like drinking a bowl of stock.  Not good.  I ate the cheese & bread and left the soup behind.

    Meanwhile, nobody left hungry.

Came here for lunch with the Mr. one Sunday afternoon. The prices were a lot more expensive than we thought, so we stuck to getting burgers and the salad bar. The burgers were good, not the BEST, but good. However, the salad bar was amazing! Everything was fresh and tasted great. I would come back here just for the salad bar alone! Even my boyfriend who is, like any guy, not a huge salad eater, was a fan.

Chuck's on 17th has been a Ft. Lauderdale  fixture for so long, the site of one of my first dinner parties was normally  known for good food at moderate prices.  When I returned the other evening for my birthday dinner, I was swept back to those days.  This place did not look like it had changed since the last upgrade in the early 90s.  Clean, classy, tropical modern with fun music and a lanai.

The staff was attentive and fantastic, management did not blink when I asked for a table for 20 (give them a few days notice folks), the drinks and wine were top notch.  After the meals were ordered we shuffled up to the salad bar.  Same formula from 20 years ago, cold salad plates and hot bread.  Every body was happy until the main plates arrived (again the staff did a great job bringing everything out so everyone had their plate within a reasonable time and we didn't have to wait to dig in), and we realized the steak looked fabulous but taste?

I wouldn't normally say anything unsettling about Chucks but I would like to offer a slight criticism.  Maybe it is my taste (I had a similar experience at Rays the Steak in Arlington VA)  but the rib eye I ordered was a little over done and void of flavor.  I am going with three stars on this experience because of the service and the rest of the meal, but the meat was flat.

I have been here about 5 times, the first 3 times the food was just ok, nothing special (of course a salad bar is always a good thing), but the past 2 times the food was horrible, to the point that the last time my friend ended up vomiting his burger a few minutes later (my burger had no flavor at all so that was a giveaway, I didnt finish it), service is not up to par for a stakehouse, I refuse to go back here.

Good Cheese Burgers and sometimes I get the Tuna Melt in a toasted pita. Burgers are grilled the way you request it. They always taste like I grilled them at home. Which is tasty. The Tuna Melt is a good portion and tastes great inside the warm toasted pita bread. I always get fries served with my lunch.

I almost always add the salad bar. This place along with the old/closed Raindancer Restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale started the salad bar concept. Not sure who claims to be first. lol. Must be Chuck's because they are still open hahaha. They have a good vegi selection and the plates are in a freezer so they are nice cold. Total old school here.

Great place for quick service and a nice lunch. Never been there at night for dinner, but I heard it can get packed.

Remember to tell them Dan sent you and look at the specials board when you walk in and Stay Hungry!

    Solid-reliable-a comfortable old favorite!
I have never had a bad meal there.  Service is always reliable.  Prices--entrees very fair.  Desserts and drinks are priced very low.
Salad bar comes with most meals--so keep that in mind.  An appetizer really isnt needed.
The salad bar is above average with some very tasty dressings.  Bread selection is adequate if unimaginative with old fashioned butter tubs.  Not a huge minus--but could use improvement..
Probably not a great restaurant for a date-but fantastic for families and  get togethers.  Many singles appear to eat at the bar--and a few tvs usually have sports or news on in the lounge area.
The decor in the dining room reminds me of a cruise ship--sort of a time warp---but always clean etc.
Servers appear to work in teams and in general are spot-on with their menu knowledge and are always warm and welcoming.

If you dont want to do the Ruth Chris--Morton's big night out--you totally cant go wrong here for half the price easily.  The other location on 17th street has a bit less parking--but has all the same attributes.

Try the New York Strip!  This place reminds is a mix of old fashioned Chicago steakhouse crossed with a 1950's polynesian throwback.  Decor is low key and family friendly...although I did feel a bit under dressed in my shorts, sandals and polo.  Perhaps jeans or khaki's would have been better?

The steaks are aged, which makes them OOOOH so good.  I loved my NY Strip, for a lean cut it was so tender and just hit the spot.  You also get a baked potato and a salad bar, which round out a very hearty meal.  French Onion soup was "eh" - served way too hot to be of any use.  The prices are a bit steep, $28 for my NY Strip.  But maybe its me that needs to adjust to how much food now costs in South Florida.  I love the place and go back for a special treat or even just a good guys place after a day of golf.

A couple of suggestions/comments for the owners if they're reading

    1) Texas Toast instead of the thin slices of bread you're serving.  Texas Toast Garlic Bread would be even better
    2)  Good work overall on the salad bar, but maybe more kinds of green selections.  Today's day and age, people want a Spinach Mix, Field Greens, etc...the Iceberg mix is just not enough.
    3) Creamed butter...no more pats of the cold frozen stuff
    4) More bread and a bit less cheese on the French Onion.
    5)  ***edit on 2/8***My latest visit, they have now added a ribeye.  I'd still stick with the NY Strip though, it was a bit tough***OFFER A RIB-EYE ON YOUR EVERYDAY MENU.  Filet and NY Strip are good...but how can you not offer the Ribeye?  Its the best cut offering fat (flavor) and meaty goodness!
