I'm torn on how to rate Conroy's. I feel like I want to like it a lot more than I do, but I'm just not there yet. Not that 3 stars is BAD, it's just that I would like to rate Conroy's higher, but feel like I just can't right now.
The good parts of Conroy's are the fact that they show some of the rugby games (the ones on Fox Soccer Plus, for any rugby followers), they're open 7 days a week, it's reasonably close to my house, and the bartenders have always been nice and friendly. Oh, and the bathrooms are extremely clean (I do love a clean pub bathroom)! Plus, this pub is part of what I affectionately call the "Gaf Family", and I do love the other 2 bars in that family, so Conroy's gets some carryover love.
BUT.
I have to say, the food isn't great. It's alright (though the nachos I had there were abysmal), but really, everything I have had has been pretty mediocre. Which is a bummer, because I feel like it's a struggle for me to pick something to eat there, but when we're in for an early rugby game, I also don't want to be drinking on an empty stomach. Also, the drinks are sort of expensive. They do have daily food and drink specials and a reverse happy hour (which I will have to give a try), but...yeah, I just don't love it.
With all of that being said, though, I think they're really trying and have the potential to be a great bar, they do have a really good atmosphere, and I think I'll have to stop in some night to catch a band and try out the reverse happy hour. Maybe Conroy's will just be my drinking place, and not my eating place!
The nondescript exterior belies a truly glorious public house on the inside, all dark woods and Guinness signs. Â This is the kind of place that makes everyone remark, "Hey this reminds me of this great little place in [random city] when I used to go drinking with my college buds..." we felt immediately at home on the very first visit, Â The service was absolutely wonderful; our server Erin was at the top of her game, and the bartender was great too, with a friendly & chatty greeting for everyone walking in the door. Â The food was equally good -- fish & chips, beef sandwich -- generously portioned & delicious. Â The best part was the bread pudding! Â It's made in house, with plenty of raisins, and comes with whipped cream. Â Yum!
There's good nightly specials, and a patio out back that I'm looking forward to once the weather warms up.
I'm holding off on a five-star review simply because I haven't had a chance to try their food yet. Â Everything else, however, was outstanding at this new location on 95th street in OP.
We sat in the bar area with some friends and had drinks after a dinner elsewhere. The two bartenders working the bar area were astute, quick, friendly, and always ready to refill a water glass or ask for another round at the table. Five stars for these guys!!
The cover band playing in the main dining area was high quality with some really off the wall songs (who plays Cemetery Gates by the Smiths? Not complaining!!) mixed into the normal favorites.
Perhaps the best quality of Conroy's was the atmosphere. Everyone was happy, smiling, and having a good time.
I'll definitely head back to try the food. Even though I'm expecting typical bar food, it would be well worth it in this cool and friendly location.
1st visit to Conroys. Liked the corned beef n cabbage plus the yummy mashed potatoes underneath. Wife did not care for the sour 1000 Island dressing on the house salad or the mushy tomatoes. We sat next to a piano hoping they have a live music schedule. Not per the waitress tho. Piano is just decoration. The place would benefit fm some good fiddling to go with the ivories. Would come back for another go at the interesting menu.
Review Source:Since my last review here, I have had many, many more pleasant experiences, so I thought I would update! Â
To begin, they have some incredible bartenders who are always professional and helpful. Â If they've seen you before, they will remember you and treat you like family the next time. Â We never come in until really late, and there is usually one person waiting on everyone. Â At times, the bar area is rather full with locals, and the bartender is always hoppin, making sure everyone is taken care of. Â I will say we always sit at the bar now, so I cannot speak for service in what I call the family area. Â
I have tried several items on the menu. Â The french dip is always good, but I have since tried the short rib burger (tasty but nothing special), the avocado salad (ok, but not enough avocado to be named after it), the pot pie (small. . .I like big portions), and finally. . .and this is the best one. . .tacos on Taco Tuesday!! Â Oh my, the pulled pork tacos are da bomb dot com!!! Â The shells are hand fried, and the pork is smoked and just so tender!!! Â They also have chicken and beef. Â The chicken is ok, and I didn't try the beef. Â I think they are $1.50, and they are very, very worth it! Â
Finally, I love the atmosphere that has evolved at Conroy's. It is very close to what I was hoping for when it first opened. Â I stay away during family time, as I don't care for small ones around when I am having a beer, so by the time we get there, the lights are dimmed, a few locals are hanging out, people are friendly, and one can have great conversation or watch a game without pretense or loud noise. Â We come here about once a week now, as it's close to home and convenient when we need a late meal or beer. Â
It is definitely worth a try!
Saw a Morgan's deal for this place and checked out the yelp reviews. Â Seeing as they were pretty favorable, we stopped by for dinner last night and I'm glad we did.
It's a smaller pub, so I am not sure what it's like when it's busy. Â But we easily found seating in a booth.
They have daily drink specials and a menu that is typical bar food. Â It's hard to call it totally Irish when you can get quesadillas and Nachos. :)
I ordered the Fish and Chips and the wife had the BLT and side salad. Â The fish was awesome. Â I loved the breading and tartar sauce. Â My only wish is that they'd given me fewer fries and one more fish strip. Â It was really good.
The BLT was enjoyable as well. Â The bread was fresh and the bacon crispy. Â Just right.
The server was pleasant and we'll be back. Â It's not too far from home and we both prefer it to Johnny's on 95th street.
Took a chance and went there after driving by a bunch of times.
We tried the daily special (pork chops) and the fish and chips. Â They make an honest effort to prepare their own food and it shows. Â The fish and trips were really good. Â The fish was exceptional, not heavy breading, cook perfectly with great flavor. Â A real nice surprise. Â The chips were good but not great. Â The side of cole slaw was small, but I really didn't need a lot of slaw after the fish. Â The pork chops were good maybe a little too much gravy. Â
Service was very good. Â We were seated right away and got our drink orders in right away. Â The food came quickly (but it wasn't real crowded).
It's worth another trip soon.
my husband and I headed here on a tuesday night for a quick bite with our 19-month-old son. this meant were were dining out early. like 5:30 early. I think there were still people there for happy hour.
we were both craving fish and chips so that's what we ordered. for our little guy we ordered a side of mac & cheese. everything was delicious. the side of mac & cheese was HUGE and our picky little eater loved it. he ate quite a bit of it.
even though the service was a little spotty in the beginning (no one was covering our table!) the server we ended up having was really nice and very accomodating.
we'll be back!
We've been on a bread pudding kick around the house lately, going out for a car bomb and some bread pudding to most of the Irish places in town. Â (More reviews of the other places coming soon enough, I'm sure.) Â These guys had great-but-not-the-best bread pudding, served more traditionally than some of the other restaurants (loose and lumpy, but with your choice of ice cream or whipped cream). Â It was definitely not dry, which is important, and the flavor was great.
What made this place for us was the bartender and his spin on the car bombs... (If only I could remember his name now!) Â This is definitely a good stop to prime yourself for a night on the town: he tops off the Guiness with an extra splash of Jameson and the Bailey's/Jameson shot is very generously poured. Â Felt that one immediately!
We'll have to head back and work through the rest of the menu, but it's definitely on our Drinks & Desserts list so far.
This restaurant opened very recently, so it is to be expected that a few improvements could be made. Â The location used to be a pizza place, so I was interested to see what they would do with the decor. Â I was pleased to see the transformation into a more modern and intimate setting. Â The service that we received was satisfactory, although I would have liked to have had our waters refilled more, and receive our food a bit faster (I work nearby, so I was still able to eat during my lunch hour). Â I do wish that they would have had the option for a soup & salad combo, especially for a lunch menu, but I ended up just ordering the broccoli cheddar soup in a bread bowl, which I felt was priced appropriately. Â The soup was hearty and the flavor was delicious, but the veggies & onions were far too crunchy for my liking. Â I ended up picking most of them out. Â My husband ordered the french dip sandwich, which he thought was good, but felt that it was overpriced for the amount of meat in it.
Since we were there during the day, we didn't order drinks, but they do have a full bar with (daily?) drink specials and a separate room for larger parties. Â All in all, I was satisfied with my visit, but I think it would be better with a cheaper lunch menu and some sort of soup/salad/sandwich combo. Â I will most likely return but it probably won't be until the business is a little more off the ground.
