Bad news the reuben has changed... for the worse. Wow this is one bland chain of slop. Yes so are a lot of others (sorry panini not good either). do 'you people' really like bland proccessed cardboard for lunch? wow okay mickey d crowd LOL. Lookit, the food is just to level you can force down yer gullett. Why the two stars than? Cause you and I knwo there is vey littel selction anywhere and at least the seating is semi-nice!
Review Source:Typical corner bakery. Exceptionally friendly staff.
For those who aren't familiar with corner bakery, it is similar to a cafe, halfway between a sit down restaurant and a fast food chain. Â A full meal will cost you around or less than $10. Â You order at the counter, get a number, and stick it on your table. Â The staff will bring your food and bus your tables.
The bathrooms are downstairs and you need a token to enter. Â The stairs can be a little slippery so be careful!
The only reason I give four stats instead of  five? The elevator could be cleaner.
Pretty much like a Panera minus people calling out your name for your food to be picked up - they deliver your food to the table.
I got the tomato basil soup which was yummy paired with the chicken pomodoro panini which was equally yummy yet a little too greasy... I had to soak up the grease on the bread with some napkins - kinda grossed me out. My combo was served with kettle chips and a big cookie - lots of food for $8.00.
This is a perfect location in the heart of it all... clean restaurant. Fast and friendly service.
Great for lunch or breakfast especially if you want some alone time. Casual atmosphere... solid food. I think I'd pick this over a Panera.
I loved this place in the mornings to grab a quick bit of breakfast. They have pretty much most things you'd want to start your day including fruits, eggs, juices, coffees and breads. I had probably the best french toast of my life here so far so if you make it by you should absolutely give that a try!.... The seating can be a little quirky in the mornings though. Even thought they have plenty of seats it seems like a lot of solo customers come in to enjoy their breakfast and eat up all the good tables/seats.
Review Source:I liked the ambiance of this place. Â Busy, hustling downtown chicago eatery, however I tend to like the smaller, independent restos. Â This place had a "big box" feeling to it which doesn't suit me. Â
Although I only got a coffee, it seemed as though there were an abundance of food options, and saw several people getting panini sandwiches. Â Perhaps I should've tried one?
Anyways, that aside, the coffee was just "okay". Â Not sure if I'd go out of my way to return.
I love most of the food served here. Â The cinnamon cream crunch cake is to die for and breakfast paninis are delicious, Â however, after several bitchy and rude employees, I am rethinking this as my first choice. Â
Seriously, a cashier who woke up on the wrong side of the bed practically slammed the bathroom token in my face. Â It's crazy enough that you have to ask for a coin to go to the bathroom but his actions were the last straw for me. Â So I promptly returned the coin to the manager and walked out.... Â
This place is an option for so many tourists and I would be so embarrassed to have that jerkleg represent our city.... Â There are plenty of other nice people who need a job, can that guys ass......
When you walk into Corner Bakery, it sort of reminds you of what Panera used to be back in their heyday, but at a more personal level. It doesn't feel as assembly line-like, but it has a cozy touch where you can sit back on your laptop and relax. You do have the Pancake House just around the corner, but when you don't want to deal with the lines and you're looking for a quasi-fast food, no-hassle meal, this is the place to go.
After you put your order up at the counter, you are given a number, where you can then grab your drink and then find a seat. A waiter will bring your meal out when it's ready, similar to when you order a personal sized pizza at Panera.
We came here for breakfast, and I wound up ordering the Anaheim Panini ($4.49) which consists of eggs, bacon, tomato, onions, avocado, and cheddar on sourdough bread. The presentation of the sandwich is bare and minimal, simply a sandwich on a plate. It was light but actually quite delicious. It is fairly priced, but if you're looking for something a bit more substantial, I'd choose something larger. Otherwise, this sandwich is an excellent choice to get your day started.
The Commuter Croissant ($4.79) is another excellent choice to start the day. It is served with scrambled eggs, smoked bacon, tomatoes, and cheddar. It's another good sandwich with just the right amount of saltiness from the bacon, and tartness from the tomatoes, making for a balanced meal.
If your time is short in Chicago and you're looking for something a little more unique, I'd venture elsewhere, but if you're looking for a nice spot to relax, the Corner Bakery is a perfect spot to kick back.
It's a chain. It's not going anywhere because of a review or anything constructive that I may or may not say. That being said, the people here are always really nice and accommodating. In fact, I can get anything for breakfast customized--especially to include egg whites and no bacon and on the steakhouse rye bread. The coffee's abundant and fresh and the food is served hot and fresh but fast!
It's a nice, easy place to grab a quick bite and be on your way. In fact, in the Gold Coast, the prices are really reasonable.
The staff here is extremely friendly, especially one of their managers Felicia. She is so attentive and if you're a regular here she's always happy to see you back.
My favorite dish here has to be the pesto cavatoppi! Cavatoppi noodles in pesto sauce with grilled chicken and bread crumbs sprinkled on top, absolutely delicious!!
Okay, so I frequent this place mostly because it's convenient and close, and sometimes I ask myself why I'm going here when so many amazing Chicago city restaurants are close by. Â However, I can't help it. Â It's perfect for when I need a hot cup of joe and a quick salad, sandwich, muffin, bagel, ya know. Â Cafe food. Â
I've never had something I didn't like; however, I hate that the only side option is a bag of chips. Â I would love for a cup of fruit or even a piece of whole fruit.
Last fall, I was involved in a football-tailgating-game-of-catch-disaster that resulted in a finger surgery. Â My boyfriend asked me what he could get me to cheer me up, and the only thing I wanted was an apricot walnut rugelach from here. Â Is that weird?
Rating a chain may be super lame, but Corner Bakery is definitely a chain for a reason--- the food tastes homemade and you feel like you could be sitting inside a local cafe.
I worked at Panera and I sometimes order a sandwich at the Potbelly's in the Merchandise Mart. But both of these places do not even come close to Corner Bakery. Potbelly sandwiches do not even taste good and they're a total rip off! I pay $6 for a bacon and swiss sandwich there and their bacon is so thin I can barely taste it! And although Panera has the best chicken noodle soup, their sandwich selection does not fit my palate.
However, Corner Bakery has it all. Amazing cinnamon break? Check. Great chicken noodle soup? Check. Pumpkin bread? Check. AMAZING bacon (thick, long and juicy)? Check. Good prices. Check!
I never visited Corner Bakery until recently, and the one on State and Rush is the best. Their swiss and bacon panini is to die for and it is cheaper than the horrible bacon and swiss sandwich I order at Potbelly's (I really, really dislike Potbelly's and I think I'm going to write their headquarters a letter saying that their sandwiches are a total rip off). If you want a great sandwich that is big and will fill your tummy, go to CB.
And the staff here is really nice. Everytime I order the cinnamon bread, the cashier cuts me a HUGE slice and no one there ever rolls their eyes at my ridiculous sandwich requests. And everytime I go, I get what I pay for and more! CB also has free wifi, so I love to just sit in a booth and study.
But I must warn you, CB is dangerous. So much of their food looks so delicious that I tend to order about 5 things because I can't make up my mind!! Pesto pasta, bundt cake, french toast, soup? Their menu doesn't end!
This place was close to our hotel, so I went here to get a quick lunch for my daughter. They had a nice half-moon ravioli with marinara and a piece of garlic bread for $8.09 with tax -. It was FAST, good service (friendly checkout woman) and generous portions. They used real ricotta inside the ravs and had good parm (not the green can stuff) on top.
Adding this to the list of places for lunch in Chicago under $10.
Not all corner bakery cafes are created equal.
This is my favorite place to finish up any work that I have. Something about this place, its spacious and the staff is extremely friendly! The free wi-fi helps...but really its all about the lemon bars!
It's just a great place to grab a quick bite and get some work done. Shoot...I'd probably come here if I didn't have work to do because the soups and sandwiches are so yummy!
Corner Bakery is a great place to meet up with friends before heading to another spot -- especially in the morning. You can get either a hot breakfast or a bagel & coffee on the go. Â The quality of their food is much better than Starbucks and I don't feel like quite as much of Yuppie carrying around their coffee cup. Â :-)
Review Source:I have been to this location no less then one hundred times. Â Seriously. Â Probably much more. Â And in the last year or so I will tell you that the quality of service has ramped up and won me back as a customer.
There used to be employbots who could care less about anything. Â NEXT. Â But recently I have been overwhelmed with the quality of customer service I have received at this location. Â
Ready to walk out one day, irritated because there was no seating, the sweet and lovely manager on duty (I don't recall her name but she is tall, African American and amazing with the cutest smile and flippy hairstyle) took me to the side and Voila, in minutes there was a clean unoccupied space for me to enjoy my pasta/pesto/chicken.
Another day, I was in a HORRIFIC mood (I know, hard to fathom) and Eric not only took my potato soup order before it was officially "soup time", he modified my request and had them add an little extra of my favorite topping, just because! Â The next week when I came in, he remembered my order, exactly the way it was the week before. Â 1,000+ customers later? Â Yeah, exactly my point.
The manager, who ever she is, is an inspiration. Â She is sweet and kind to the little old dowagers from the well heeled 'hood and equally kind to the riff raff that stumbles in. Â She is charismatic and kind and seems to have her eye on the ball so much so that she noticed my non vocal irritation that day. Â I've had plenty of horrific experiences here, let me tell you but I really feel strongly about giving props where needed.
Awesome bagels in many flavors, piping hot coffee and serve yourself softdrinks, cheery staff (even in sleeting rain), great sammies, heavenly soups and decadent sweets.
Fifth star when you slip me the combo to the bathroom..............
I love the Uptown Turkey sandwich, and usually opt for a side salad instead of the chips, but have liked most of the things I've tried on the menu. It's a great quick spot to grab a brunch or lunch if you're in the neighborhood but the service isn't the best and you MUST check your take-out bag before you leave -- I've had trouble getting the right order a few times at this location. To their credit, though, when I brought it to their attention, they sent me a coupon! So I keep coming back :)
Review Source:The food: Â Great!
The service: Crappy!
Everytime I go in I order something different. Â When I ask for descriptions, I can never get one!! Â STORY: Â
Stef: Â What exactly is Carbonara sauce?
Cashier: Uhhhhh...
Stef: Â Is it spicy...?
Cashier: Â No....
Stef: Â Does it have mushrooms?
Cashier: Â No... it's just kinda a plain sauce.
Stef: Â Okay, I'll take your plain sauce chicken pasta with a Brownie and lemonade.
Good thing I can grab the lemonade myself - because it's the 2nd time they've jipped me of my brownie. Â
I called this afternoon to speak with the GM, Chris. Â He was awesome and very courteous. Â We had a good conversation with a good outcome. Â I will be sure to follow up on my service here. Â I go here often enough to notice a change. Â I just try not to order anything other than the meal itself.
Meh. But I was expecting meh.
You know when you've only slept three hours, and you're hungry, and your friend's hungry, and you're walking around, and you're both getting irritated, and you keep nixing places for one silly reason or another? And then you finally, defeatedly, settle on a place that you both know is only mediocre?
And mediocre it was. The service was shoddy but good enough for an order-at-the-counter, in-and-out kinda place. The food was fine -- I had a pesto panini of some sort and a latte. I'd rather eat here than at some of the d-bag exhibitions in town, but I wouldn't seek it out.
I get the Chopped Salad here about once a week and it has yet to disappoint. Â I would definitely recommend it, along with the Tomato Basil or Baked Potato soup. Other reviews criticize the service here, but I've never had a bad experience. Â Maybe it is because I never come during lunch or dinner rush, but they are always fast, friendly, and consistent. Â I'm sure I'll be back again soon!
Review Source:The restaurant was clean, staff seemed tired, and somewhat mute. I'm not sure why they couldn't talk. Maybe all that shyness was provoked by teenage angst? Hey the bus-boy seemed happy, although still mute. Didn't like the idea that one would have to truck downstairs to only find that the bathrooms were coin operated then truck back up with knees clenched pleading for a solution to this horrible dilemma. They should post a sign on the ground floor before our hopes are dashed by the token entry.
Overall Uninspired... I went with Allen R. to this Corner Bakery on our way to the Fashion Show. Funny enough we were still quite hungry when we got to the library. We got the Panini that was showcased, and while it had quality ingredients there was no reason to dip the whole number in oil before cooking it.
Panera. Corner Bakery. I don't know which came first. Honestly, I don't care. 'Cause Panera has Corner Bakery blown out of the water. I've eaten at three different Corner Bakeries now, and it's been lackluster every time. Greasy sandwiches, tired salads, apathetic, adolescent staffs, dirty dining rooms. Why pay $15 for glorified Subway?
P.S. An oddity worth mentioning: the pickles are wrapped in wax paper here. Mine was actually wrapped in THREE sheets, such that by the time I actually got to my pickle, my hands were soaking with pickle juice. Fun!
It is always a thrill to get to McDonald's before 10:30 AM. I heard a rumor that they were going to serve breakfast all-day someday. Â Sure, I would rather have an Egg McMuffin than a Ranch Snackwrap at say, 2PM or 6PM, but it takes away the pleasure of "making it." Â Why am I talking about McDonalds when I am reviewing Corner Bakery? As an adult not living in central Illinois, my taste buds have become slightly more sophisticated yet I have found that same "making it" thrill at Corner Bakery. Â I LOVE their Oatmeal- the one loaded with brown sugar, raisins, cranberries and walnuts!!! It's inexpensive, filling and such a treat PLUS you get a cinnamon crusty! Â The catch is you have to get there early. Â It's not served all day and if you get there too close to the end of breakfast, they say they are out and your breakfast bliss is shattered. Â This game of the early bird catches the worm is a little bit more challenging than the one at McDonald's. There is no guarantee on time. Â Get there early or get out.
This particular location is a great alternative for breakfast, lunch or dinner while roaming around the Gold Coast. Â You get the same sidewalk view of the neighborhood as Gibson's or Tavern on Rush for a fraction of the cost. Â The service is slightly disorganized all the time, but it works.
Bottom line- try the oatmeal even if you don't think you like it. Â The new oatmeal with bananas and honey is also delicious but the classic is best!
This lunching place always hits the spot. Â Their half and half combo is my favorite...mmm panini and tomato basil soup. Â I don't have a big problem with the lines because my lunch time is so early I miss the rush. Â I can say that I have experienced the brutal long line of dum dums wondering what they want and workers staring off into space. Â Sadly I have forsaken this place lately for big bowl, sorry corner bakery, I'm just too much of a sucker for fried rice and fiery dumplings :(
Review Source:Do we really need one on every corner? Â I guess so because everywhere you look there's a corner bakery. Â I'm not really complaining though because it's a good lunch spot if you're working or on the go. Â They have a good turkey sandwich- uptown turkey and good roasted tomato soup. Â They also have a southwest salad that is good, and I really don't know what they do but they have better lattes than starbucks.
Review Source:I walked in here as this old lady was closing the place. Â I wanted some hot soup because I wasn't feeling well and not in the mood to sit down at a bar/restaurant, I just wanted some soup to go. Â I have to give this lady a big high 5! Â For her generous service that was just unbelievable. Â I have never been treated so well and her attitude was very caring and genuine. Â It was real and not fake like some employees are just saying, "thank you or have a good day" like they don't care and robotic. Â But she was very thorough, making sure, spoon, napkins, bread was included, and stayed extra time to make me a bowl of soup because it was ended of the day and there was none left. I was so happy. Â Can't wait to go back.
