Went here for a show this past weekend.
This place is pretty weird, one of those tap room extensions onto a liquor store.
Tap Room is a strange term though considering they have no taps. That said their beer selection is rather weak as is their liquor selection. The place seems really half assed all together.
I did have a great time here though, but I blame that more on the bands playing than the venue itself.
Its an ok place to see a show but I'd never stop by just for a drink.
Somebody made a mistake. Â Me, Yelp, or Yahoo Maps? Â The ball was dropped.
I zipped up and down Milwaukee Ave a number of times, but could not spot the spot. Â I arrived at the address that I got from Yelp for Crown Liquors, but it was not Crown Liquors. Â Sticks in my craw. Â Get to a place, the street matches, the numbers match, the building doesn't.
I received better directions and finally did get to Crown Liquors. Â No wonder I missed it--a number of times--it's a kind building. Â No bells, no whistles. Â And it's tucked a bit away from Milwaukee Ave., at least the bar is. Â Who knew it was a liquor store and a bar? Â I didn't. Â Might have saved me some pain in da ass if I did.
There was more room in the bar than I expected. Â It's big but plays small, kinda like Toni Kukoc. Â
The men's room. Â I don't think you'll be able to find it unless you're Ponce De Leon.
I drank some cheap beer. Â I also had a "I wish I was someplace else" six dollar cocktail. Â The ladies behind the bar were both back niners, but they moved as fast as they could to toss drinks, so I showed them some love.
I was there for an event, which was great. Â Word around the block is that people play music there. Â It's good for that. Â I don't think they even serve food. Â I'd be surprised if there was a kitchen. Â That would be some real House of Leaves shiz.
Liquor store beer selection, while small, is well curated. For some odd reason, the clerks are always avidly watching Fox News. Must be Cuban owned. As for the back room, a great show space and whoever is booking back there is putting on some good shit. Kind of like Ronny's, without the dirt and much better sight lines for the bands.
Review Source:Rating based only on the liquor store, as I've not gotten the nut up to go to the bar...
They have Great Lakes 6 packs for I think $8, and it's the closest liquor store in the 'hood to my house. Â They have a good selection of regional brews, and while I've never checked out the liquor selection, it seems admirable for a smaller store.
Bonus: the ladies behind the counter are always nice.
I've stopped in here a few times at a friend's request but I don't think I'd venture here on my own. Not only because I don't live near here, but I get a weird vibe from the crowd.
It was kind of odd, as soon as we walked in the door, 95% of the crowd was at the bar and the dance floor was barren even though there was a DJ playing dance music. The other 5% were the bartenders and the DJ.
One of the bartenders was a jackass, but in a fun and teasing sort of way. I made him buy me a shot after he mouthed off and he liked it. At least, I gathered that when he kissed my hand goodbye.
All in all, $2 PBRs are not hard to come by in this city. If you are in the area, give it a go. If not? Don't go out of your way.
I've been to this place a few times, and still have no real opinion. Â The room itself is beautiful as far as dives go (which for me is very far)- pale green walls, black painted hammered tin roof. Â This big open space used to be a bakery back in the day, but I can see this place having a long future as a bi-lingual corner bar even as the neighborhood around slowly gentrifies. Â The owner is certainly ready for that- I was watching a Red Sox game on a tiny screen one day while a handful of Latinos watched soccer on the big screen. Â To everyone's dismay (mine included), he switched the big screen to baseball, presumably so this gringo (me) would feel welcomed. Â Well, the Latinos up and left and I felt like a jerk. Â Maybe just an honest businessman's mistake, and generally the staff here are friendly in pantomime- you can't really hear them above the mariachi that's blaring from the all-Spanish jukebox.
Review Source:AHAHAHAAAHAHAHAHA, thanks for putting the photo up Kiarash. Â like i said before, i think i may have a kid out there.
as for an actual review, i was here the same time that K.Z. was here, and it's been my only time. Â i don't really remember much of it, except that we danced a lot even though i do believe that the group we were with brought the dance, and really what else can you ask for....?
Some friends and I stumbled in and haggled with the door guy over a cover charge. Once inside, we drank $2 PBRs and danced to passable club hits. I doubt I would have had as much fun if I weren't sloppy drunk, but the regulars were cool about it. Together, we turned out a respectably debaucherous party. That being said, I don't think I'll return.
Review Source:This joint, let me tell you about this joint. Â Took my entire family (parents included) to this bar while waiting to get in at Friendship Chinese. On Christmas Eve. Not exactly the christmas-eve-family-type establishment.
Despite the not-so-appetizing mini-taco buffet offered, we opted to keep our reservation at FC. Â To say the least, this place looks like it can get rough. Judging by a few near scuffles, it certainly gets the "edgy" tag. Go figure, it's the bar in the back of a liquor store.
The bartender looked barely old enough to remove his training wheels much less be smoking a cigarette behind the bar. A retired Marine and his pals made friends with my dad. Many beers bought, tears, and hugs later, we finally made it out the door.
I'll be back. With a big man and/or gorilla at my side.
The kids of the owner have been cleaning this place up. The selection is getting better too: decent selection of microbrews, a large wine section, and most of the standard liquors you'd need. It's no Vas Foremost, but a solid liquor store is emerging.
I hear the tap room is attracting hipsters now too. I'll believe it when I see more ass tight jeans and greasy hair.
