"Popular hangout for locals with live music, ok food, and average, bar-style service"

    Food: 3/5
    Service: 2/5
    Atmosphere: 3/5
    Parking: 1/5
    Cleanliness: 3/5

Fireflies is very popular with Del Ray locals for their live music, full alcohol selection, and bar food. Local bands showcase their music, and neighbors flock together to grab a quick drink. Nothing particularly memorable, just a neighborhood bar.

Food here is ok, not bad, just not good. The keen eye can tell that the ingredients are certainly bar-esqe in that the menu is certainly not chef-inspired with exotic ingredients and scratch-made products - more along the lines of diner food put together into dishes. The prices are excellent but don't expect truffle mac n' cheese with lobster - expect more burger with fries. Not a complaint, just a comment for a restaurant in a hipster community locally famous for it's boutique stores and specialty restaurants.

Service here has been consistently slow and diner style....no set script like one would expect in a corporate place with timed requirements (30 seconds to greet a table, 2 minute drink delivery, etc.) It's more "hey, are you ready to order". Little eye contact, smiling, no menu recommendations, just not up to par with other restaurants that employ a premade script for servers to follow.

Parking is terrible as it is located in Del Ray which is, like much of Alexandria, infamous for the lack of parking so come early if you do plan on coming to enjoy some live music, drinks, and maybe a side of fries.

Was excited to try this place after seeing decent reviews however I was disappointed.  The location and service are good but the food was underwhelming--just ok.  My pork shop was severely overcooked and lacked flavor; others at the table had similar complaints.  The place looks great but the food fell flat for me.

I really, really wanted to fall in love with this place.

A friend and I popped in for Sunday brunch. We were seated very quickly, which was impressive. However, we were sat right next to the bluegrass band. The music was very loud and not conducive to conversation; however, we got there at the tail end of their performance so it wasn't a big deal.

The service was excellent. Our waiter was very attentive and brought us drink refills without being prompted.  He was also very knowledgeable of the menu and was able to offer suggestions.

The food was just okay. My friend had the breakfast burrito and enjoyed it. I had the french toast, which was a bit bland. The portions were HUGE and worth the price.

The restaurant itself is very dark and cramped. I felt like I was practically sitting on top of the people at the next table.  When I washed my hands in the bathroom, the faucet knob broke off in my hand. However, I read that the restaurant is moving to a new location. I hope the new location is more spacious and brighter.

Overall, I feel like there are better places to eat in Del Ray. I might be willing to try FireFlies again once they move to a new location.

When my wife and I were looking for places to live in Del Ray, all of the people showing us houses raved about FireFlies.  We have eaten here a couple of times, and we have never been let down.  Being so close to our new home, we frequent this local eatery fairly often.

We have mostly been for lunch and often order salads or burgers -- both of which are pretty good.  The prices seem relatively fair, and the service is always kind and wonderful.

The one thing we absolutely love is the live music during Sunday brunch.  Both of us are huge fans of Bluegrass, so we make sure to stop by as often as we can to listen to the awesome band that regularly plays each weekend.

I had a hard time deciding on whether to give it 3 or 4 stars.  For now, I'll stick w/ 3 until I am able to see what their dinner is like.

Stopped by running errands in Del Ray.  The inside is dark and dank, but they have a good sized patio out front.  I had the BSLT (bacon, salmon, lettuce and tomato) sandwich.  Good stuff.

FireFlies, I love you. Your burgers are good, your brunch is great, and the bluegrass on Sunday helps me cope with a looming Monday morning back in the office. You're a staple in Del Ray and I always know I'll get a solid meal even though I feel your menu is a little overpriced. One major complaint is I never get a straw just given to me with a drink order, I always have to request it. Other than that give FireFlies a try and if you go for dinner try the Cali Burger, I'll stake my burger recommendation reputation on it.

Actually had the car while visiting NoVA this weekend, which meant hubby and I could try something outside of our usual Old Town Alexandria faves. A friend had recommended FireFlies over a year ago - better late than never! We went around 11:45am on a Saturday and there were plenty of tables available. A large group came in towards the end of our brunch who were clearly coming from a nearby high school graduation, so perhaps it's busier on other weekends?

Hubby ordered custom smothered hashbrowns, which is sort of like build you own cheese fries. He mentioned that the potatoes were salty (a good thing in his opinion); the portion was pretty substantial. I had the "Breakfast Club" from the specials list, which was actually something I would like to see more regularly on brunch menus. It was an omelette-esque folded egg on foccacia with tomato, bacon, and cheese, with chive mayo. Delicious!

Overall we liked it and will probably be back, despite the shock that hubby's soda cost $2.99 - that's pretty pricey for syrup and fizzy water!

Fireflies is a great choice for weekend breakfast or brunch - laid back, friendly and attentive staff, and wonderful coffee and food.  It's a place where originality is valued, as shown by the menu and the rotating photography on the walls.  I like that Fireflies is a venue for live music and other entertainment, even though most of it happens at night when i'm not there.  Street parking is easy, and there is a small lot.  It's one of my favorites.

Came here for trivia night. Street parking was super easy and available on a Tuesday night. It's a decent size space (and the trivia host had a mic, which helped!). All the staff are very friendly. They had some good beers on draft and the prices were very fair. Food was okay - I wasn't a huge fan of some of the apps, but the pizza was pretty good!

I've been here several times for dinner. Always have to try a new and different pizza, but my favorite is the BBQ Chicken. And I love sitting at the bar and trying new beers. They have a great rotating list.

Just a warning. Only eat here for breakfast. I had a steak for dinner that was supposed to be med rare and was well done with some plain beans. The flavor of the steak was pretty bland as well. Everyone at the table was passing around the salt to flavor their meal. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. Stick to brunch or pizza!

Trivia night! We hadn't been to FireFlies in ages. It looks like they changed their menu and vibe--from years and years ago. Solid food line-up and super veg friendly. WHEATBALLS! WHEATBALLS! The meals were all well prepared, served up looking good and tasty. I would say a buck or two cheaper would be more appropriate for each dish. Need a place for omnivores and herbivores to link up, this place works.
The staff was super nice; attentive; and worked hard.
Trivia night (Tuesdays) is phenomenal. The host is one jolly dude.
    Great neighborhood joint!

We visited here during Restaurant Week 2013 and we were excited that it enabled us to try so much! The menu is really varied - everything from salads and burgers to 'real' entrees!

As it was restaurant week we got to try 2 appetizers: Fried Okra & Calamari. The calamari was fantastic! The fried okra was OK but nothing I'd order again. The calamari would be a must-have next visit! For our entrees we went with pizza - delicious - and a burger. My burger was great! The staff had made a mistake the first time they brought it but quickly fixed it and brought me a new one quickly, which I really appreciated! They were very kind about it and it was worth the wait. We're not talking like super schnazzy food here but it was good, tasty food!

The atmosphere was good - had a nice bar area, some outside tables for pleasant weather and a dining room. It was inviting, the people were nice and they had good food. I think we will definitely be back!

It's a cute establishment on a growing set of artsy spots in Del Ray. We happened to accidentally go on small business Saturday and I the place had a rug indicating as such so I guess we participated...yay. We didn't call ahead for a table and you should if you can, its a small place. So we had to wait...eh, but I can't blame fireflies for that. The selection was just right, not too big, not small. At quick glance it seemed like typical American fare, but there were interesting things like my quiche thrown in. The food arrived quickly, was tasty and hot, and the server seemed very experienced/on her game.

FireFlies was alright...recently went here for dinner and had the pesto and grilled chicken tortellini. It was good, but nothing to write home about. This place is nice, a pretty cool hangout for the older/somewhat yup crowd in and around Old Town Alexandria.

Live music was great! Would definitely come back for drinks and music on a cool autumn night.

This is the kind of place that is why it's so important to have a star rating system and a narrative.  This place is absolutely perfect for what it tries to be-- a casual, inviting, great neighborhood restaurant.

We live really close to FireFlies and we sometimes go multiple times in a week.  We know most of the waitstaff now and everyone who works there is friendly and laid back.  We love their burgers, pizzas and great rotating beer list.

It's not a fancy restaurant, it's not somewhere you go for a dress-up special occassion, it's the type of old favorite you can go to again and again for a comforting and fun time.

They make an effort to have regular specials, like Monday night 1/2 price burgers, Trivia once a week, Wednesday night special beer night, local bands on Friday night and Sunday morning bluegrass.  They even have rotating local art on the walls that they select from Blueberry gallery up the street.

It's a neighborhood treasure where everyone is welcome, wearing whatever you're wearing (we've even gone there straight from gardening and sat out on the patio covered in mud with our dog in tow before), for good food, friendly service, and a great time.

I can see the appeal of this small, friendly neighborhood hangout. But if you have to eat the food you will never become a regular. Worst meal ever! Gloppy bruschetta, gloppy Caesar and a pizza that was only ok. Probably a better place for drinking than dining. I will not be going back.

We went here for dinner on Friday night around 6 (summer day 95 outside).  There were about 3 other tables being served.  It is very warm inside, it seems as if their AC doesn't work very well with such a small place and an open kitchen, lots of ceiling fans working overtime to keep the place cool.  It wasn't entirely uncomfortable but it could have been cooler inside.

    Service was good.

Our server brought us a tiny bowl of popcorn (a little too salty and oily for my taste, but edible) and took our drink orders.

I ordered unsweetened iced tea and it was a little strong for my taste.  I ordered a burger medium and it came out well done but was still moist and flavorful.  We had potato skins which were fine and their cheesy bread is good, if not a bit too much garlic for date night.

I'm not sure I'd go back.  It was a good, solid meal but I think it's a bit pricey for the portions.

A buddy and I went for Sunday Brunch. The brunch menu is large and diverse so you can easily find something you'd like. We were some of the first arrivals so we had the patio all to ourselves and it was a pretty quiet Del Ray morning minus the crazy lady awaiting the bus 6 feet away.

I got the Breakfast Pizza! I've never heard of a breakfast pizza and apparently it's pretty popular so I couldn't not eat it. It's a standard thin crust pizza with a little tomato sauce and cheese then for toppings they put on scrambled eggs, sausage chunks, and bacon! Genius. It still tastes the same heated up later when you take some home.

They have a good offering of eye-openers and breakfast beers also. The FireFlies Sunrise (tequila, mango & pomegranate) provided the vitamin C needed to start the day. Good service!

Not too bad. I'd been told for a long time to check out FireFlies. Honestly, it was pretty good, but not as good as I thought it was going to be, especially for the price.

I like the novelty of popcorn as an appetizer, but it doesn't go with the rest of the menu at all. Popcorn makes me think of Winger's, a quirky diner chain across Utah and Idaho, not a place trying to offer me a somewhat refined menu.

Either way, I'd probably go back, but with more tempting establishments all over Del Ray, it might become the victim of local competition.

When I was 19 I was an intern in DC. And I hated it. With a fiery passion. After 8-weeks of Hell (and partying) I left the area saying that there were only two things in DC that I liked: the metro and fireflies.

I did not mean this place.

Don't get me wrong, this place isn't as bad as being chained to a phone and desk on the Hill for a summer, but I'm far from 19 and I need more than an insect with a butt that lights up to make me happy. Portions were huge and plate presentation was nice, but the actual food here was hit or miss. It was a little too early for the night-life side of things when I visited, though there is a stage for live bands, which play more nights than not. The decor of the restaurant creates a much more divey feel than what the menu and presentation appear to be aiming for.

I ordered the black bean croquettes ($14.99)...apparently the waitress' 'favorite dish.' Imagine a black bean burger that hasn't been cooked; it was so soft that it fell apart just trying to get it on my fork. I really don't understand why restaurants always eff up the token vegetarian option. Don't put it on there if you're not gonna take it seriously and serve something of quality. The chipotle cream it came with was good but even asking for extra on the side, I couldn't save the dish; mush texture can't be doctored by spicy sauce.

I got to eat my grandma's leftover pecan crusted tilapia ($15.99), which was superb. Yea for old people having small appetites! Lightly crusted and nice and buttery. Still didn't make up for the black bean croquettes from the night before.

Each entree comes with two sides, of which there are 14 to choose from; you're not stuck with a starch or veggie you don't want and don't have to deal with bs substitution fees, etc. The sauteed spinach was the best side of the evening: seasoned and garlicked well, and still bright green, making it look as fresh as it tasted. The macaroni and cheese was creamy but with boring, one-dimensional flavor...not to mention that it wasn't heated through evenly. The roasted red potatoes tasted like...roasted...red...potatoes.

I'd consider going back for brunch since Fireflies is close to home and brunch is my favorite meal of the day, but would refrain from another crap shoot at dinnertime.

I have absolutely not problem in admitting when I was wrong. My first experience at FireFlies was about as terrible as I could have expected.

I'm back to set the record straight. Saturday brunch at FireFlies is becoming a staple, if not a ritual to a great weekend. In the past two weekends, I've fallen in love with the french toast, and been impressed with the chicken n waffles. Saturday morning sitting outside, while the friendliest waitress I've had on Mt. Vernon Ave serve my wife and I lunch makes the workweek worth it.

My recommendation? Start with brunch, if you're happy try coming back.

3.5 stars but since this is probably an independent business I will round it up to four.

Went here today and sat outside it was a beautiful day out. I went inside to go to the bathroom once and it was all right. Just number 1, I try to avoid public restrooms...lol. The parking here is pretty lousy. The food is all right, my entree was damn good, but the black bean soup I ordered was all starched up and spicy.

I had the black bean croquettes or whatever they are called. It was absolutely excellent. Also, I had a brown ale mystery beer. Let me tell you their bar selections were a bit pricey, but awesome selections. The croquettes were very good, so was the mac and cheese. Not so much on the sweet potato fries. I was alone because my wife was at work but some couple was sitting beside me with absolutely zero personality. I wonder sometimes if monotonous people attract.

The service was spot on and perfect. My water was always full and the waitress was very nice. Sometimes this is the most important part of dining out. I LOVE great service. 2 thumbs up Fireflies, I will be back again.

Definitely worth a trip if you are in the del ray area....

I have to agree with Marianne H. I was looking for the words to describe it, and there she goes with pretty much what I wanted to say.

We came here with a friend and her family at my recommendation because I'd heard good things from coworkers. I was immediately turned off by the exterior appearance. It kiiiind of looks like a strip club. Red, black, dark doors/windows... just sayin'. Hardly screams "family friendly."

We came after our friend and her family had already arrived, and based on their glowing recommendation of our waitress and bar stock (read: sarcasm), I knew we were in for a treat. She was a nice girl, but apparently the bar was out of pretty much everything they'd asked for (regular drinks, like iced tea/Coke). Also, my husband asked for an IPA and was delivered a Fat Tire, even though she claimed otherwise and three of our table members confirmed it was wrong.

The decor was horrible. Outdated and not in a cute, kitschy way. The layout was so in need of serious help, and the bathroom was also in need of some help. I see a future "Restaurant Impossible" episode being filmed here.

The only rewarding factor was the food itself. I had a margherita pizza, and, I have to begrudgingly say their pizza is good. But, not good enough to get me back here voluntarily.

My friends and I were famished, hangry and ready to chow down one Saturday afternoon.  I started with the calamari which was a disappointing grease fest.  My main was the Cali Burger because it listed guacamole! as an ingredient and I am a sucker for it!  I immediately noticed that the guacamole was so thinly spread, it wasn't even worth mentioning on the menu.  I think the worst part was the downright GREASE.  My burger was dripping with grease from the inside of the patty.

**Every bite was a small oily explosion in my mouth.**

I ordered grilled vegetables as my side and I wanted them prepared without oil.  They were overcooked and loaded with pepper.  No oil though :)  YUCK I can't believe I put my body through that.

I will not be returning.  There are too many restaurant choices in Del Ray (and the DC area) to settle for this less than mediocre greasy spoon.  I have to say that the service was good.  Our waitress was upbeat and attentive.  But nothing could bring me back to this place. Nothing.  Don't be fooled by the overflowing patio on good weather days like I was.  This place is just not worth the clogged arteries.

Went to brunch there today.  The atmosphere is really nice.  They have a bluegrass band playing while you eat.  My date and I sat at the bar, and the bartender was really nice.  She was very attentive and really made you feel like you were at home.

My dish was really good.  It was a Mexican-influenced dish with black bean patties with eggs on top.  My date's wasn't that great.  The hashbrowns were actually roasted potatoes that were pretty dry. We were expecting something else.

    Overall, it is very quaint.

Eh... there are much better options in Del Ray so I'd avoid this place unless you have a Groupon or some other reason to go.

We came here because we had a Groupon. The wife got a burger and I got the pulled pork sandwich. The kid got the quesadillas.

So they do a good job of making kids feel comfortable. They have large comfy high chairs instead of your standard restaurant wood high chairs. They also give the kids a cup with a top on it. If you run a restaurant in Del Ray, you have to be kid friendly. I did appreciate that they were accommodating for the kid.

My pulled pork sandwich was pretty dry. They had the BBQ sauce on the side and the sauce was kinda thick and not anything special. I got sauteed spinach on the side and that was really dry too. The wife's burger was also just okay and nothing to rave about.

I went here on a date and was pleasantly surprised by both the food and service.

We sat outside and the chairs and table were honestly pretty cheap and didn't match, something you'd find at a random backyard cookout, I appreciated that they weren't trying to impress anyone.

The food was inexpensive and DELICIOUS. I got the cali burger and it was cooked perfectly, just the right amount of guacamole, and the bun was phenomenal. The sweet potato fries were damn good too. My date devoured his pulled pork sandwich, so I assume that was delicious as well.

They had a great beer selection and the waiter was actually pretty knowledgeable on the subject.

Go here if you like an understated atmosphere at a place that lets the food and service speak for itself.

Ahh, Bluegrass Brunch, THAT'S what it was. Boyfriend and I went to FireFlies for brunch on a Sunday and I was pleasantly surprised by a live band playing inside. And then we decided to sit outside because I'm not too fond of live music while I'm eating indoors. Plus, it was a gorgeous day.

So we were seated outside, near this plant thing that was really annoying and threatened to take over our table. Got it under control, but I'm still generally uncomfortable when sitting too close to a plant. It's not that I'm scared it'll eat me, it's just that it's annoying.

Anyway. I got the BSLT, which is a smoked salmon BLT. Delicious! I usually have trouble picking brunch items because of my undying love for eggs -- I always lean towards them, but then I realize I can just make eggs at home. The greatest thing about FireFlies is that they offer eggs as a side option. Talk about awesome! So I got my BSLT with a side of two eggs (sunny-side up). It was perfect.

Boyfriend got the Huevos del Rayo, which I had a taste of. The black bean cakes were so good! He got a side of cheese grits. I tasted that as well, but it didn't taste like much. I think I don't like grits.

Our server was nice and competent. Great food + great service = great brunch.

I sat at the bar and was given fresh buttery popcorn. Cool. Their beer list was nice but pricey, so most people I saw coming to the bar ordered PBR.

The bartender recommended what she called a Thai shrimp banh my (AFAIK that's Vietnamese, but whatever). She said it's a spicy sandwich with carrots, a spicy sauce and shrimps. Came with a side, so I picked broccoli.

When I got it, it was indeed a Vietnamese sandwich with not so fresh bread but with a delicious spicy sauce. The problem was that there were only 4 breaded small-size shrimps. 3 steams of broccoli with it. 3!

Are you kidding? $10.50 for 4 fried cocktail shrimps lots of bread and 3 broccoli pieces?

    I don't get this place.

I can't believe that I've spent a few thousand dollars in this restaurant in the last few months and they are unable to accommodate us for my birthday.  If you can't handle restaurant week then do not participate.  That simple.  Either hire the staff you need and staff that are customer focused or dont bother being in the biz.

The food is generally okay but the last two times I've been there I've been treated poorly -- once when it was a slow night - fewer than 15 people in the entire restaurant - 2 people sitting at the bar and I was told (with my out of town guests - about 5 of us total) that we couldn't sit at the bar unless we were going to order food.  (WTF?!)  Imean, we were going to order food -- but why make that a statement.  The bartender that night was at best, bored.

On another recent visit -- they highly recommended the sausage biscuits and gravy - totally an entire plate of white flour-y gravy - little flavor, dry biscuits.  Although it was a huge portion I picked out he two small pieces of sausage and left the rest.  Size doesn't make up for mediocre.

Tried to make it a regular hang out spot, but this place is not cutting it.

I came here on Easter Sunday for brunch. The host said 'Happy Easter' to make us feel welcomed and that was a good start.

When we got seated, our server guy came to take our order. I asked about the possibility of cracking the egg instead of scrambled egg on top of our pizza and he said it could be done.

    1. The pizza came with runny egg. I told him to take it back to put it in theoven to cook it since I wouldn't eat runny raw eggs. He rolled his eyes and said he thought I wanted the eggs as is on top of the pizza. Maybe miscommunication but who would want runny raw egg on toop of pizza? He took it back and later a food-delivery boy got us pizza with cooked egg.  Now the pizza was edible.

    2. Five-day french toast: When I asked the server guy how this french toast was special, he couldn't explain why but just said it was good. He said I could get a chocolate sauce without any charge as Easter-special.

This french toast was NOTHING special for my taste. I thought it was dry inside-out, not flavorful at all and needed EXTRA syrup to make it moist. I thought about why it was called '5-day French toast' .. and my guess was maybe because the bread was 5 days OLD and ready to be thrown away but specially saved for weekend French toast.

The food-delivery boy and the host were friendly but the server guy was very errogant and rude. I wish I could give my tip to them, not the server guy but I didn't feel like asking about it.

    I will NOT return.
PS: If you have brunch here, get pancake or egg-dish. They are HUGE and seem like a better deal than French toast.

    WARNING!!!!!..WARNING!...What a let down!..Send me your thoughts!

Yesterday, we drove around Del Ray area hungry looking for a place to get a bite to eat. We bumped onto Fireflies, my BF walked up and looked at the menu first and said let's park. The atmosphere was great, a blue grass band playing, good brunch and lunch items, full bar and even a good selection of beers. We were greeted pleasantly by a very nice waitress. I really enjoyed my medium rare Alpine burger and my bf loved his Norwegian Salmon and eggs Benedict.

Here is the issue. We had ordered 2 beers. I am not a beer drinker but they had a Blueberry Sea Dog and the waitress said it was nice and fruity. I tolerated it, but I would had added a little more sweetness. I asked the waitress for simple syrup (I know, I'm weird). She said she didn't have it. I said no problem, but then she came back with a shot of Chambord. She poured a small amount of beer and Chambord and asked me to try it. I agreed it tasted better, She said, "problem solved". then she poured the rest of the shot in my beer. I thanked her!
After she left I made a comment to my bf on how nice of her to go out of her way to please me! We also were planning to come back and make this place our regular spot! as we are a quick cab ride away from his place...to add, my boyfriend referred Fireflies as a hidden gem!

This morning I pulled my receipt to start writing my review and I find that she had charged me $7 for the Chambord shot! Keep in mind my beer was only $6 and my bf told the waitress earlier if I didn't like it he would gladly drink it. Now a $13 dollar beer! I would had ordered a martini if I would had been warned! Is this fair?? charging me without warning?
Needless to say I just told my bf and he is appalled! This could had been an easy 4+ star review, but with this kind of sneaky way of charging no way we want to come back!
    Alpine Burger: $9.99
    Norw Benedict: $11.99
    Sea Dog Blueberry beer:$6
    Hebrew Genesis beer: $6
    Shot: $7
    Total: $44.67
Plus 18% Tip that SHE did not deserve!

    Arrgh...

I've been putting off writing this review for years - and eaten there a few times a month since I first said "arrrgh...i better yelp about this".

First, the good news.  I L-O-V-E Love the bluegrass brunch.  I've been going for almost 6 years.  It is a freaking national treasure; the music, the good vibes, the breakfast pizza - I've had many a wonderful Sunday morning there.  I'm also a fan of their great happy hour specials - $5.99 cheese pizza (plenty for two to enjoy).  When their pizza is good, it's the best in town, but unfortunately, It hasn't been consistently good.

And herein lies the problem: consistency.  They have some of the nicest, efficient veteran waitstaff around, but I've also had some REALLY lousy service lately.  The food can at times be incredible - delicious, thoughtfully presented, and piping hot, but we've had other times where it's over-salted, over or undercooked, or served cold.

On our last (and I'm afraid we do mean last) trip, we were seated by the waiter we had last week and numerous times before that.  We were the only customers in the restaurant except for a handful of people at the bar.  We waited 10 MINUTES before we were relieved to see one of our favorite waitresses, who carefully took our order and we figured things were in good hands.  30 minutes later, we had to inquire about our food, which arrived and was a mixed bag ranging from good to i'm-pretty-sure-that-taste-means-it's-gone-bad.  I'm afraid this means goodbye fireflies.

I want this place to be great.  It's right in our neighborhood, they seem to have great intentions about bringing some low-key quality nightlife to Alexandria, but it seems to have been at the sake of the food and service that kept longtime customers like myself coming back.  Slow service and some inconsistencies in food during a busy time can be understandable - but the past few times we've been - it's been pretty rough.

I do wish them the best, and hope with a few months time, they can get out of their slump and get back to what made them so great, but in the meantime, you have lots of other great options in Del Ray.  I look forward to updating this review soon with good news of renewed hope in my old standby.

We went to Fireflies for brunch yesterday on the recommendation of friends who live right down the street.  That's a good recommendation, right?  We were trying to find something low-key, reasonably priced, but with tasty-sounding brunch options.  We were in luck!

Our group of six got there at ~10 and were seated right away.  Coffee tasted a little burnt to my partner, but I was in need of caffeine and had no complaints.  Mimosas weren't on the menu, and when ordered came out with pomegranate cranberry juice - a questionable choice, but fine for the drinking, and since they were make your own, enough for two of us.

Between the six of us, we had the following:
Italian Benedict - delicious, good sized but not gut-busting.  A good amount of prosciutto, perfect eggs, a veritable sea of Hollandaise (which makes me happy), and home fries on the side.  Will definitely get again.

Norwegian Benedict - appeared to be more of the same.  My friend was happy.

Mushroom Vol-au-Vent - the mushrooms were incredibly savory.  I was a little jealous.  We all loved a dish from the Original Pancake House called Eggs Michael - this was a very acceptable substitute.

Chicken Fried Steak - the gravy was fantastic, and my partner seemed happy with his choice.

Custom Quiche - smaller than I expected, but it looked awfully tasty.

Breakfast Pizza - holy crap, is this the steal on the menu!  Our friend ate half, shared at least one piece, and took more home.  In addition to all of the other tasty options, we'll definitely be back to split this for a super cheap brunch.

Our server was attentive and funny, and we enjoyed what we heard of the bluegrass.  Despite the meh other reviews, I think we'll definitely be back - especially for happy hour, which sounds like it has fantastic deals as well.

BOH BOH BOH. I never would have ever thought I'd find a reggae party on a Monday night, let alone in Del Ray, and lastly but not leastly, at Fireflies.

Since I've moved back to OT, Monday is the new Friday and, after a grueling day of class and work, I'm ready to get twisted. My first Monday out, I made friends with a guy who told me he throws a DJ night so I went this past Monday. The music was OK, the crowd was thin, but my tab was low and the place is nice. I grabbed a carryout menu which led to...

Ordering lunch on Tuesday. I went for the reuben on whole wheat with a side of potato salad. The PS was mediocre, the reuben was too and I had indigestion for the rest of the day and night.

Still looking for great brunch in NoVa.

Fireflies is a nice little restaurant on the south side of Del Ray.  Lots of great outdoor seating, I'm sure this'll be a great place for dinner or happy hour.  The bluegrass brunch was fun and worth going to, but the food itself wasn't particularly memorable.

We all ordered the same thing - buttermilk pancakes, which came with a homefries/hashbrown combo.  The hashbrown patty was just like McD's, which isn't exactly a bad thing, but just not all that special.  The homefries I could've done without (and didn't bother with).  As for the pancakes, no complaints, but they were just plain pancakes.  I've had better...

If you are looking for the best happy hour option in Del Ray, then look no further than Fireflies.  Every Tuesday through Friday, from 4:30 to 6:30, glasses of wine are $3.50; beer options are no more than $2.50.  Food selections are more than ample, as you can get a huge bowl of hummus, or a plate of wings, or a 12" pizza, each one for under $5.  We had a party of 6 and came out of there with a $40 bill.  Righteous!

The Sunday Bluegrass brunch is solid and delish.  Personally, I like to go before 11 am, when the band comes on, as they tend to drift towards the overly loud.  (I'm not old!  I swear!)

My biggest beef with Fireflies is its surprisingly non-child friendly atmosphere.  Yes, I said it.  Lots of parents with kids go here on a daily basis.  I have never gone there when there haven't been a slew of children in attendance.  However, there are no changing tables in the restrooms, and each time a family enters the front door, more-often-than-not, the staff switches on the haughty button.  Now this does not happen every single time.  There are several servers on staff that are amazingly accommodating.  That said, I am not the only person that has noticed this behavior.  Hopefully this can be remedied soon, and I won't find a hawked lugie in my beer.

Overall, Fireflies is a great meeting place with good food and libations.    Great atmosphere!
