This is one of my favorite places ever. It's my little corner bar, right down the street from my house and I love it dearly. The staff is wonderful and friendly, the food is tasty and comforting, the bar is well-stocked and the atmosphere is homey and pleasant. I come here constantly for brunch or late-night drinks with friends and I"m never dissatisfied. It's my warm blanky of a bar.
If you're feeling peckish, the menu is full of great options, though I'm partial to the Fish & Chips for dinner and the French Toast at brunch.
Come and hang out in the back room with me and my friends some time. It's a truly happy place to be.
A typical neighborhood bar in Roscoe village, BUT the service here is awfully sweet and it is a great place to bring friends. Â The side room is relatively empty on weeknights and you can have at it being as loud as you want going crazy with friends. Â Â The sweet potato fries themselves are a reason to come here!
Review Source:I have a soft spot in my heart for neighborhood bars like this. There's just something cool about a bar that's tucked away in what is essentially a residential area. Yes, there are bars on Roscoe a block or two away, but there is nothing but apartments and condos all around Four Moon. I like that.
Went here last night after improv class and it couldn't be beat. Relaxed vibe, interesting mix of people, super friendly bartender, and a superb beer selection. This will likely become my Sunday night hangout, at least for the next couple months while this class is going on.
See you next weekend Four Moon!
My favorite neighborhood spot for 1.5 years.
Friendly staff, good food, and an excellent beer selection coupled with a very inviting atmosphere results in the ideal corner bar.
My favorite brunch item would be the pecan pancakes. And my favorite lunch/dinner choice would be the sloppy joes.
I'm going to miss this place.
I'm a little biased since this is around the corner from my house, but I think even it it weren't I would still give it the big bad 5 star rating. Â Badass beer list with a good rotation of new drafts every week or so. Â The bottle and can selection is great too. Â They have a good liquor selection; small batch whiskey and the like.
The food is as good as any bar food in town without trying too hard. Â Homemade perogi, nachos loaded with fresh ingredients, and great nightly specials. Â I haven't worked my way through all the selections, but what I've had is solid.
There are two TV's which are small and and out of the way enough to satisfy a casual interest in whatever sports might be playing, but they're ignorable. Â The music is always good, eclectic, and appropriately loud. Â They play Ween. Â If you don't know what that means, it doesn't matter. Â If you do, then you know the score. Â
As for price, it's reasonable enough. Â There are usually beer specials, and you can drink the generics if you're feeling stingy.
The bartenders are all really nice but can be mildly surly in a fun way. Â I'd have to say I'm a lucky man with this as my local. Â With friends or alone this place is always a warm and good time.
I would have happily served up a 4 star review for 4 moon but I ordered the shepherd's pie..... I love shepherd's pie and I have to say it should be off their menu. I tried my girlfriend's crab cake meal and that was great, but this was the worst shepherd's pie I have ever had. However I don't hate or even dislike this place because they have a pool table, the patrons are polite and fun, and the service was great. Their beer selection was also very good and the place had a jukebox that plays fantastic oldies music all night which I was glad to allow to set the mood for my evening or drinking and relaxing and enjoying myself. I blame myself for ordering what seems to just not be a specialty of this bar's menu and I will come back and hopefully amend this review because I did enjoy my overall experience here.
Review Source:Came back here on a recent Friday night - we stayed from about 10 pm-1 am and there were a decent amount of people in, but not so many that it felt crowded. Â The crowd is lively and easygoing. Â We managed to snag a table in the back, it's a bit quieter and more subdued back there. Â We had several good beers from their solid list, but the best thing about this place is the flippin JUKEBOX! Â Stones, Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, Mumford and Sons, Elvis, Black Keys, and....wait for it....FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS. Â Playing "Inner City Pressure" and "It's Business Time" basically made my night. Â Also the jukebox is hella cheap and you can actually hear your songs played. Â How novel! Â
All the food specials on the wall sounded uber delicious. Â I know I liked my pizza last time so I will have to return for more food. Â We're so glad to be back in the neighborhood, because this place is still pretty awesome!
You can't beat a 75 degree March evening having dinner and a beer on the patio at the Four Moon Tavern. Â The bar itself is pretty cozy with seating at the bar and a few two person tables along the wall. Â Every time I'm in here I notice something different on the walls - this time it was the How to Do the Hustle and How to Do the Rumba pictures on the wall... Â Random but gives the place character.
The staff here is friendly and welcoming. Â They went out of their way to answer a couple questions about the beer selection and the menu for us which was really appreciated. Â The staff deals with regulars and new folks in the same polite manner - so you really can't ask for more!
The beer selection here is pretty darn good with a nice mixture of American and European beer. Â They usually have beer on special too to save you a couple of bucks. Â The food is good - sort of homemade bar food - it works. Â We enjoyed the veggie chili nachos - not soggy!!! Â We also had the grilled cheese with tomatoes - a hearty sandwich that was filling especially with a generous amount of fries.
If you are in Roscoe Village I'd check out the Four Moons for a drink or for a lunch or dinner.
This place is a great neighborhood bar.
The staff is always friendly and willing to help. Â The food is pretty decent and is more unique and homemade feeling than your typical bar food! Â Plus like that they feature different beers each month but still have the staples (miller, bud, etc).
I stop in here at least once a week for a peaceful dinner and a couple of beers. Â For a tavern, this place has a pretty decent kitchen. Â The fries are incredible, as is the combo of a grilled cheese and tomato soup (for dunking). Â The beer selection is quite extensive and appeals to the beer snobs who would scoff at Miller, Bud or Coors offerings. Â At first, I was hard pressed to find a beer on the menu that I really could enjoy with a meal since they're all pretty heavy. Â I finally found the one Pilsner on the menu called a BBK from Germany. Â It was very tasty and goes quite well with chicken fingers or a grilled cheese.
This place is full of locals from the Roscoe Village neighborhood who just want to hang out and have a nice visit with friends. Â It's surprisingly quiet and mellow for a tavern, but I'm all right with that. Â They have a vast music selection that plays a lot of really good songs that you've likely never heard before (or at least I haven't). Â Service has always been really polite and not too intrusive. Â They just appear when you need them and disappear when you don't. Â I can get used to that.
Favorite bar food in the city. It's also really affordable.
We live in Ukrainian Village now, but every time I've anywhere near Four Moon, I don't pass up the chance to go.
Food Favs:
-Grilled cheese with bacon, ham or pepperoni (!)
-Nachos. Not soggy at all. Maybe the best I've had in the city
-Perogi's. Not sure if they're made in house, but they're super fantastic.
A couple of my good friends live in Roscoe Village and we had been wanting to try out this place for awhile. We decided to go this past Friday night and were not disappointed.
They had a great selection of beer and a diverse menu. We ordered the veggie nachos and they were awesome! I have never had nachos like that any where else in the city. I also have to say that you do not usually go to neighborhood bars that actually have mexican style chips.
I also really liked the ambiance. It was a diverse and relaxed crowd. It was perfect for a relaxing Friday evening with friends. I also really enjoyed how everyone seemed to know one another when they walked in the door. Something to aspire to I guess...
I was really excited to try this place after seeing the reviews, but was pretty disappointed with the experience. I only came here for lunch, so my rating is solely based on that, not the evening bar scene.
The decorations and the unique beer selection are pretty cool, but the bar top was pretty worn and not very clean. That might be an understatement. The place seemed to have a lingering nicotine layer still.
I asked the bartender/server if the meatloaf had bell peppers in it (again, allergy) and she made sure to inform me that there were NOT peppers in the meatloaf, BUT they prepared bell peppers in the kitchen (which is fine). I appreciated her making an exerted effort to make sure my allergy would be accommodated.
The sandwich was okay, came with a lot of mayo on it and an out of season, possibly defrosted tomato. I added ketchup and it seemed decent until I ate a piece of the meatloaf by itself that had fallen on my plate, and I Â was pretty put off. Maybe it needed bell peppers for a better flavor, I don't know, but it resembled wet cat food. That was pretty much the end of the meal for me. I tried to eat a few more fries (these seemed good, fresh cut maybe?) but wrapped my Four Moon visit up there.
Again, this place might be an awesome night scene, but as far as consuming some food that was prepped here, I will have to pass.
The four moon tavern came off to me as the epitome of a neighborhood bar. You walk in, and you feel welcome (and also ready to drink)
I was bouncing around and found myself here late on a sunday night. Even then, there was a solid crowd for the time and night. I took a quick look at the taps and needed some founder's dirty bastard. Sadly they were out of it, so onto avery and lagunitas instead.
The beer selection was very good and there looked to be about 15 or so taps going with a good sized bottle list along with a real quality craft can list to boot.
I liked the overall vibe here. I'll need to come back when I can spend a real good amount of time, but this is definitely fully on my radar now
A great neighborhood bar with an excellent list of craft beers on tap, bottle, and cans. Worry not though if you are the type person that gripes at the price of craft small batch brews, then you can take advantage of the can of Hamms or Strohs for $2.50. Schlitz in a bottle is a dollar more.
The food is better then I expected and they have a great menu with daily beer and food specials. I don't really know how this place gets later in the evening because I always go earlier in the night so I give this place the thumbs up as a great starter bar for a bite and some booze before the night really gets going.
Four Moons { their food, their beer(list), their vibe } is da neighborhood bomb!
Tucked away on a quite street corner in Roscoe Village lies Four Moons Tavern. Â Look for the charming outdoor seating area, white christmas lights, and their retro moon sign. Â
Finally checked this place out after hearing good comments from beer-enthusiast friends about their menu and beer list. Â I agree, they have a nice beer list and a great comfort food menu too. Â My date was in heaven - meatloaf sandwich, bratwurst dinner plate AND sloppy joe!? Â How is a man supposed to choose?!?!
He went with the bratwurst dinner (two diff. kinds o'brats + kraut + potatoes); I went with a most delicious chicken gyro + sweet potato fries - this gyro was heaped with enough filling for two (lots of crisp lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, great cucumber sauce and flavorful chicken pieces), and served with a giant mound of nice big sweet potato fries to go with it. Â Everything tasted great, and service was prompt and friendly. Â
We took note of their awesome-sounding nightly dinner specials, and we plan to be back (hopefully soon!)
A great neighborhood bar! Â I love being able to walk to and from the place I'm getting drunk at. Â AMERICA! Â This place is old fashioned and really sticks to its guns for staying original. I love the selection of beers and there are some great drink and food specials everyday. Â I have gotten the burger and the grilled chicken sandwich, both really good and exactly what you want when you're drinking 3 or 10 beers. Â
The staff is friendly and really attentive. They also have great outdoor seating where you can bring your dog! Â This place knows what's up.
This bar is an OBVIOUS 5 stars and well-deserved 5 stars at that. Everything on the menu is great so you will not be disappointed (the grilled cheese with tomato and bacon is possibly the best in the city). They also have a healthy stock of craft beers. Stone IPA is beer of the month currently. Scott and Nikki are two of my favorite bartenders in all of Chicago. They practically have our drinks waiting for us when my friends and I go in.
I've been coming to this place since before I moved to the city two years ago and have friends that have been going there for the last 8 years. Its proximity and down-to-earth atmosphere are what keep me coming back.
I would give the place a million stars except a crazy ex who followed me down here from the burbs apparently frequents the place and now there is always a chance of a run-in.
I like this place. It's a great neighborhood bar with classic food your mom might make for you, like meatloaf. Meatloaf is one of those things I don't like to admit that I like because I'm a snob. But I'll admit to loving four Moon's meatloaf. They also have great veggie chili and fish & chips, along with decent specials on craft beers. It's a homey place with a nice staff.
I think the most comparable pub, food-wise, would be Silver Cloud. And really, the food at Four Moon is better.
Serendipity--I was on my way to a dinner appointment on Lincoln, approaching from the west on the residential streets so as to find free street parking. Â I happened to notice this spot and remembered it later when we were looking for a bar with outdoor seating. Â It was a great choice!
I have an idea that the sidewalk seating waters down the character of this place; in winter it probably comes close to being an old man bar, or at least a really great neighborhood place. Â But that's all to the good, and I want to come back to find out. Â It's like a Northwoods lodge in there, with pool and darts. Â It's like "a bar for all seasons." Â
Plus, they have some interesting beers that I never see on draft, such as Domaine DuPage. Â On special in April are New Belgium Mighty Arrow pints for $4.
My friends and I frequent Four Moon usually one or two times a week and have been going there for around four years or so. If you haven't been to Four Moon yet, here's a list of reasons why you should give it a try:
1) Grilled Cheese with Bacon, Tomato and/or mushrooms. Your arteries might cry, but your taste buds will rejoice. (Late night kitchen favorites also include the nachos, hummus plate and onion rings. If only they served Tots... I probably wouldn't eat anywhere else).
2) Jukebox: Despite having been stolen not once, not twice, but, I believe, three times, the Four Moon's jukebox has returned and is brand new with the same amazing selection of music.
3) Sparky. He's probably my No. 1 reason to visit the Four Moon. Nicest guy, knows his bar, knows his customers, courteous, and always has a great beer recommendation.
4) Brunch. Roscoe Village as a whole is pretty well known for having great brunch spots, but you usually have to wait 30 minutes to an hour for most places. Four Moon has AMAZING brunch and rarely is there ever a wait. I recommend the French toast but really everything is delicious.
5) The ELO--or is it Blue Oyster Cult-- Mickey Mouse painting: Go to the back. You'll see it. Is it ELO? Is it Blue Oyster Cult? Is it just a bunch of randos who are all feeling the electric light parade music?
6) Why not five stars? The SOLE reason this review is sans a fifth star is because of one especially rude waitress. Way to go, lady. You've dragged it all down. It's one thing if a waitress has a bad day, or if she's just protective of her bar, I get that. This woman is something else. It's almost as if she goes out of her way to be rude. And not funny rude or ironic rude, which for some reason I'd be okay with. She's just plain mean. I sincerely think she has a vendetta against women. And not just a particular type of woman. Any woman, really. She's extremely nice to her male customers, though. So if you're a dude, go ahead and consider this a five-star rating. If you are a girl, take the lack of a fifth star with a grain of salt and just find Sparky to take your order.
Four Moon has BRUNCH! That's right, brunch! When we were there it wasn't at all crowded, the food came out fast and quite yummy, and the price is right.
Spicy Bloody Marys, $1.50 High Lifes on Saturdays and Sundays (though a different sign said $2.50 and frankly I forgot to look at the bill to see which is right - but still), biscuits and gravy, flat-pressed, perfectly cooked, thick sliced bacon, the ever illusive over medium egg and a very chill environment. I liked Four Moon before, but I like it even more now.
Disclaimer: I only go to Four Moon for brunch. Â I have never been during the evening hours.
Ok, now that the disclaimer's out of the way, let me say that Four Moon is pretty much my favorite place to go for breakfast/brunch. Â This is an unpretentious place with simply yummy food. Â The "quiche of the day" rarely disappoints, and the cream cheese scrambled eggs are heavenly. Â I also recommend the "mashed brown" potatoes which are exactly what they sound like. Â
The atmosphere is laid back and there is usually not much of a crowd to speak of during brunch hours. Â It's a great place to go if you're feeling a little hungover. Â It's mellow, not too crowded, and the food will put you back on track. Â Plus the staff is always very friendly and attentive with the coffee. Â This wins major points in my book.
The outdoor seating is the icing on the cake. Â I've never had a problem getting a table outside and always opt for outdoor seating when the weather permits. Â Overall I highly recommend Four Moon for brunch, especially if you are looking for something a bit different from the typical greasy-spoon, diner-type places.
I have been wanting to try this place for a long time so when I was driving by last night and there was ONE open parking spot in front, I knew it must be destiny. . .
I immediately loved Four Moon. Â Really laid back and homey - I felt comfortable right away. Â The beer selection is impressive - they had Allagash White on tap and a bunch of other good brews. Â I tried their IPA special which was a good deal at $4 a pour. Â My date told me they had excellent chicken fingers so I had to spilt an order and try them. Â . .hot damn they were good! Â There is some type of pepper in the batter and each finger is HUGE. Â Who doesn't love big fingers? Â Nicely done, Four Moon.
Been here twice, more for eating than for drinking.
The Friday night all-you-can-eat fish and chips are good, but a little pointless since you really can't eat much more than what they give you, so you usually just pay more for your fish and chips.
Their nachos are the best I've had in Chicago so far. They have a ton of "stuff" on them and use real cheese, no sauces here. I love that.
They have a decent outdoor area that I'm sure we'll head to this summer so we can bring our puppy along to dinner with us, but I don't know if I'd take visitors here or anything. Good food at a little higher than normal prices, and service has always been good.
Now I'm getting a craving for those nachos, so we'll probably be back there soon!
From their crack-sprinkled nachos to the black tar heroin brownie sundae, I (apparently) can't get enough. I'm totally shocked that this place has not yet been in a movie, cuz it is super cozy and friendly feeling, particularly when it is major suck outside.
This place brings on a weird nostalgia stemming from some  combination of: their happy-seventies-music-heavy jukebox; the super sexy weird fifties burlesque videos playing over the bar; the fact that the old sitcom Northern Exposure had a bar kind of like this and it's been freezing out recently.
All this means is I'm trapped in sci-fi feeling of wanting to reminisce about the good times we are having right now RIGHT NOW, which is rather pleasant, actually.
I met my current boyfriend, Michelob Amber Bock here, a stand up guy way more considerate than that lowlife Hamm's in a Can. I also had a crazy one night stand with a drink that I believe is actually six drinks and a quarter cup of heavy whipping cream in one big frosty mug called "Santa's Puke" and served with a candy cane.
Nikki, Jessie and Sparky are the best. The prices are super reasonable ($3 beer specials and $6-10 for entrees). I'm going to try to get there for brunch at some point, cuz they have biscuits and gravy, which is supposed to take me to prom. Oh, promises, promises.
Great place to hang out on a cold afternoon on a quiet weekend. Â Met a friend for drinks and hung out casually talking. Â Was a great place (in the afternoon) to people watch, talk quietly and generally chill out. Â I agree with some of the other reviewers who give it high praise for service - the bartender, waiters and staff were omnipresent without hovering.
Young families with a child/stroller, the classic guy playing pool trying to schmooze this woman with whom he was playing. Oldies playing on the jukebox and probably a great place to make your own if you live in the neighborhood. Â Strong selection of beer on tap, and mine friend enjoyed her wine.
The acid test of would I go back? Â Hell yeah.
Hamm's in a can! Â Will I base my entire review of Four Moon Tavern on the availability of a low-grade beer with a silly name and apparently growing cult status? Â Stay tuned to find out!
Other than Hamm's in a can *don't you dare just call it a Hamm's* I had a couple Guinnessii on special for $3.50 or $4 a piece which ain't too shabby. Â It was also Fish&Chips Friday: all you can eat fish and chips for $9.95ish. Â I had a cheeseburger and some nachos since, not being a subject of the British Empire I have a fully developed palette and don't eat fish and chips. Â Not even on boxing day.
The burger was adequate and the nachos definitely deserve a special mention. Â
Also worth noting is the whimsical interior design and the bar being pool table adjacent. Â And the location not being at the Roscoe-Damen nexus. Â
Roscoe is also a great gay steel worker name.
I went here on a "technical" first date with someone and actually wasn't really focused on the place but I really liked the warm decor. Â It reminded me of a lodge I spent a lot of time at as a child...and there is a very sexy little back room, past the bathrooms that I didn't notice until I was leaving, thank god...
Server was very attentive though not intrusive and the beverage selection was pretty wide ranging with the exception of the wine list. Â Menu is standard bar food with a little twist on the classics but I never got around to eating. Â Definitely a nice local, low key place.
This place is usually great, but I empathize with the people who've had bad experiences -- it can be sort of a toss-up sometimes, due mostly to the staff. The male bartenders/servers -- especially the guy with the glasses and goatee who may be the owner -- are diligent, charming, and hilarious, but the female ones can be a little dicey. One in particular isn't mean exactly, but she has a habit of giving you a look like you just drooled in her milkshake if you have the temerity to order a drink rather than engage at length in awkward banter with her. The service in general can be slow, but I haven't encountered any of the horror-story waits some other reviewers have.
The vibe of the place is excellent, especially on weekdays; weekends sometimes attract a bigger, rowdier crowd than the place is really equipped to handle. The decor brings to mind a rural Wisconsin bar that left home at an early age, hitch-hiked to Chicago, and decided to put down roots when it met a pool table it liked. There are vintage signs and other assorted bric-a-brac on the walls that pleasingly don't look as if they were put up solely to generate indie cred.
While not huge, the beer selection is solid, with a lot of local stand-bys, assorted imports, and a tasty house amber brewed by... some local brewery, I forget which. The food, meanwhile, ranges from mediocre to excellent, with the meatloaf a particular standout. The burgers are decent, though they're inexplicably served with what appears to be a full quarter-head of lettuce as a condiment rather than the traditional single leaf. That's a little puzzling. The fries, unfortunately, fall on the limp and greasy end of the French fry axis of excellence.
Overall, a great neighborhood place with a few notable blemishes, but it's not the sort of establishment that's going to scramble to correct them anytime soon.
I hated this place. The one star is for the food, which was good, my BLT was delicious - but just try to get the waitress over to take your order. When I asked her if I could have a separate check so as not to get involved in a giant bill, she gave me all sorts of attitude about how she'd "f*ck it up". Nice. Bad logo, bad decor . . . I doubt I'll go back here anytime soon.
And what's with my BLT obsession lately . . . have I reverted back to childhood when all I ate was BLTs?
Went here for NYE because they *didn't* have some big party planned for that night. Â I was so grateful that there was a bar in Chicago that didn't feel the need to rip people off with some NYE package. Â Regardless, this bar was great. Â It's the perfect little dive bar. Â
The regulars all seemed to know each other and the bartenders also knew the regulars. Â The waitstaff were spectacular, esp Sparky. Â I went with three other friends and we just told him what kind of drinks we liked and he brought new drinks for us as ours ran dry. Â It was SO nice not to have to think what I wanted to drink next. Â Not to mention the bill for the night wasn't bad when you consider we drank as much as we did. Â
Four Moon is a great tucked away dive bar and I love it. Â If I'm in Roscoe Village I'll be stopping by to say hi to Sparky and grab a drink.
Upon a suggestion from a fellow Yelper, a few of us met here for NYE. Â Its a low key, chill place, and it looks like something out of your Grandpa Buck's basement, which is a good thing. Â Imagine retro mod meets Northwoods hunter.
Our waiter, Sparky, was number one. Â He was quick with the drinks, and he even offered up suggestions when I was stumped as to what I wanted. Â Heck, they didn't even care that I brought my own bottle of champagne. Â
All in all, this was the perfect place to ring in the New Year.
You know when you're in that spot where you are hungry but not quite sure what you want; Â you don't want to spend a ton of money; "bar food" seems to be the consensus choice but you aren't quite committed to lots of grease and/or lots of smoke? Â Well for me Four Moon is my "go to" place. Â It is a bar (not a bad thing, mind you,) Â but the back area has a cozy feel with sofas and a coffee table. Â
The food is really quite good. Â No real surprises here but it's all decent and the portions are really big. Â The "appetizers" are really meals in themselves (and priced accordingly.) Â The meatloaf, sloppy joe and quesadillas are all solid.
I've been there several times with my daughter--usually weekday afternoons--and always felt very comfortable. Â Of course, I've also been there after hours with friends. Â There's a pretty decent beer selection...me likey very much.
