Probably won't be back. Â Stopped here on the way to the museum, but I think the food at the museum would have been better, which isn't saying much.
The chicken lo mein and the spring rolls were below average. Â You've got to be able to make these basic dishes to survive as a chinese restaurant.
The first time we ordered from Friendship, we were very happy - the food was very good and it arrived within the timeframe stated.
Tonight is another story. Ordered online from the restaurant at 6.03PM. No food at 7.10 PM, so called the restaurant, was told "driver just let with your order". I live 5 minutes away. 30 minutes later, still no food, I call the restaurant. A different woman answers the phone and can't find my order. Placed on hold and after 5 minutes, she tells me it never was entered into the restaurant's system from the online ordering system, and she asked me if the first woman had an accent, and when I said yes, she replied "oh, yeah, now I know the reason".
She asks me if I want the order to be made and when I ask how long, am told another hour to hour and a half! Like they couldn't maybe rush it since I've been waiting almost two hours by the point already??? When I asked to speak to the manager, I was told, "he is really busy right now and can't come to the phone, he is serving a large party".
Lesson of the story = online customers mean nothing to the restaurant, the employ people that they know aren't doing their job, and even after they have messed up, won't do anything to fix it.
Sorry Friendship, you are not my friend anymore.
Had a mediocre meal at this establishment a year ago, but decided to try it again due to our relocating to the neighborhood.  We also liked the ambience and the fact that we can hold a conversation without the disturbance of loud music. We were pleasantly surprised by three outstanding dishes and looked forward to returning. When we returned a week later we ordered Take-Out  that including two of the same dishes; we were unfortunately disappointed by the amount of sugar and sweetness that was in each dish and had not been mentioned on the menu.  The following week we tried Take-Out again and requested that no sugar be in the food; we received food without sugar but also without any flavorable spicing.  This is 'supposed' to be a Chinese restaurant (but not specifically Shanghia-style which tends towards sweetness); we have had very good Chinese food in Chicago and while we've eaten great food in China, we expected this restaurant to be able to eliminate sugar while still providing a favorable meal. So we thought perhaps since take-out didn't work, we would try 'eating in' once more. Tonight we ordered 3 dishes, one was as described on the menu, the other two were not. I ordered a lobster and tofu eggplant curry; when the dish arrived, it was filled with tofu, eggplant and mushrooms but no lobster in sight. When I asked the waitress if this was the correct dish I was told, "it doesn't contain lobster, only lobster sauce".  Both my husband and I cook and if we make a lobster curry, it contains lobster; even a traditional Chinese lobster sauce contains lobster. But I decided it didn't matter and would eat the tofu curry anyway. I took a bite and it tasted like sweet orange juice, not like anything that was described on the menu.  I have an allergy to certain citrus fruits and I believe that this should always be included in the menu description. I had to refuse the dish and the waitress kindly apologized and offered to get something else for me in it's place.  Since most of the other foods contain some form of sweet ingredient, I was quite limited, so I chose a soft-shelled crab sushi roll instead. After quite some time the sushi roll came and to my dismay there was no soft-shell crab at all. There were a few pieces of imitation crab roll in _some_of the pieces of sushi but this is not what I had ordered and not the price of what an imitation crab roll would be.  I had to track down the waitress and explain the problem, she agreed that it was wrong and had them remake a soft-shell crab roll for me. It seems that the sushi chef thought someone wouldn't notice the difference? I eat sushi once or twice a week and this is not a place that I would ever come to eat sushi; but the second re-make was good enough and I was hungry and had already finished with my glass of wine by the time my correct meal had finally arrived. So I ate it. And I ordered a second glass of wine to accompany the meal that could finally eat. Â
Then the waitress came by with desert menus and said we could have desert on the house due to the problems with my two dishes. As we had waited quite some time for the meal to be correctly resolved, we no longer had time to have desert. When I thanked her for the offer but declined saying that my 2nd glass of wine would have to be my desert, she returned with our bill. It would have been nice of the establishment to offer my second glass of wine on the house, but they did not. We were terribly disappointed several times at Friendship Chinese Restaurant and do not expect to return. Â Since we live nearby and eat out frequently it's too bad that this place is tremendously uneven and unprofessional. It wasn't the fault of the waitress, but there is no reason for us to return. However if you like the 90's trend of eating pineapple and oranges with your main course then you might quite like the retro-menu, but be prepared for major ingredients in your dish to be switched with things you might not want to eat.
Great food, very fast for pickup, only 20 mins! I ordered the ribs and sesame chicken and couldn't be happier. Jake called to confirm my online order, was ready for me upon pick up, and he was very happy to give me my food, I like that service! On top of that they give you a chocolate fortune cookie. Will be a repeat customer.
Review Source:I'm not sure why Friendship has such a low rating. Â I think it's some of the best Chinese food I've ever had! Â I don't normally like crab rangoon all that much but their's is mind-blowing, out-of-this-world deliciousness. Â Worth every single calorie. Â Seriously, it will change your life. Â I also ordered their fried rice (with shrimp) for the first time last night and it was wonderful; not too greasy and over-flowing with jumbo shrimp. Â My husbad always orders the peanut chicken, which is packed with veggies. Â The only negative thing I have to say about it is the delivery can take awhile. Â The last two times we ordered it took about 1.5 hours to get our food. Â That's a pretty lenghty wait but it is compeletely worth it as this isn't your typical run-of-the-mill Chinese takeout.
Review Source:After over a year of searching for the best Chinese delivery, I think we might have found it! We ordered with a Groupon, but will definitely be back again! Here's the rundown:
Crab Rangoon -- huge and delicious! (and reheated in oven just as yummy)
Egg rolls -- possibly the best we've ever had..
Spicy honey chicken -- similar to orange chicken, but with a bit more kick. Breaded just enough!
Mongolian chicken -- good flavor and a huge quantity (probably 2-3 meals worth of both chicken entrees)
AND chocolate fortune cookies!! I've never seen these before and I gotta say, the plain ones just aren't gonna cut it for me now :)
This location doesn't have sushi available on the weekends which is kind of a letdown, and it's maybe a bit more pricey than other delivery options but the quality is so much better that it's worth it! The man who took my order and also delivered the food was very friendly and helpful. Â Give them a try!
Stopped by here on a friday night and there was one other table there at around 6:30. I was a little afraid to order sushi since they werent busy, so i was afraid it wouldnt be fresh...i was right. It tasted more fishy than it should have. Also, mine and my husbands meal (he got the honey chicken) came out in less than 5 minutes. I believe the sushi roll had been pre-made and just sliced when i ordered it. We also had the spring rolls which were definitley frozen and tasted freezer burnt.
On the positive side, the staff looked like they were trying to make the best of the situation.
Also, there is only outdoor seating, so just pray it doesnt rain.
Friendship's regular restaurant in Logan Square is one of the city's best Chinese places and should not be missed. Â I've given them 5 star reviews in years past. Â We stumbled upon this other location by accident after sailing into DuSable Harbor. Â I was so excited to try Friendship again, since it had been so long. Â We ordered cocktails and steak nachos, along with the orange chicken. Â The cocktails came and they were strong. Â The nachos came and they looked like something you would have made yourself in college with a bag of tostitos, a jar of cheap cheese sauce and a microwave. Â The steak was rubbery and tasted pre-made, not freshly prepared. Â After we had finished the so-so nachos, we sat at our table and waited and waited and waited for the server to not only come back to check on us for refills, but to bring us the orange chicken. Â She never came back to ask us if we wanted more drinks and she never came back with the entree we ordered. Â I finally had to ask for the check and make sure that the entree wasn't on it. Â She apologized and said she didn't realize we had ordered the orange chicken. Â We paid the bill with full tip and left, but we were incredibly disappointed, especially after I had told everyone how amazing the place was going to be.
Review Source:What a great unexpected experience! We stopped in here last night to have a drink and take in the beautiful scenery of the harbor. We ended up ordering a bottle of wine (totally fair pricing) and ordered three sushi rolls; The Blue Man Group, Lakefront 200, and Dynamite. We also ordered an order of calamari after seeing it going to another table and it looked and smelt so out of sight! Each roll was super fresh and perfectly balanced in flavor. The portion sizes were very generous, and the wait staff was very professional and courteous. Overall totally a great place to check out!
Review Source:I will say, the crab rangoon was the best I've ever had. Â But everything else was meh! Â The chicken lomein was so bland, it was like it wasn't seasoned at all. Â The vegetarian spring rolls tasted of nothing but old cabbage and the Mongolian Beef Rice Bowl was so bland, we took it home where we could get some sriracha to spice it up. Â I had looked at the menu online and decided to try this place because I love crispy garlic beef -- except the menu online isn't the menu in the restaurant ... not even close ... and there wasn't any crispy beef on the menu. Â I can't imagine ever going back.
Review Source:This place is right off the bike path, great place to stop drink, eat, and rest your booty while listening to live jazz.. Â I just had a burger and fries, they were both pretty good. Â My hubby had the sesame chicken and he really enjoyed it. Â The crowd is chill. Â I'd say it's a good place to go with the kiddos if you have any, if not just a great place to chill.
Review Source:Came here with 3 friends and tried 5 dishes. There is outdoor seating only, but it's a beautiful view of the harbor on a nice day. The service was so-so, had to wave down the waitress once.
Fried calamari: really can't go wrong with deep frying squid. These were pretty good with a nice kick from the jalapeño peppers and some sweet flavor from the pineapples.
Orange chicken: really dry, do not get this!
Beef lo fun: this was our favorite dish. Wide rice noodles in some soy sauce based sauce.
Mongolian beef: decent, yay for veggies!
Overall, it's what you would expect for an Americanized Chinese restaurant, Â without flair or a big selection. And its not exactly cheap either. Don't think I would come here again unless I had some serious craving for those noodles.
Disappointed.
Checked out the menu online and was pretty excited to check this place out.
To my disappointment, the menu online is for their Logan Square location (which the server informed me is much better).
While the service and location are great, the food I tried needs some desperate help.
Apps:
( + ) Wok Tossed Five Spice Calamari. So yummy and flavorful would enjoy this again for sure.
( - ) Â Pot Stickers. Â Yuck. Â First, they're about the size of my fist. Â Second, they're big dough balls. Â I've had much, much better.
Entrees:
( - ) Salt & Pepper Crispy Beef. Â Disgusting. Â Honestly, like eating a combination of beef jerky and a dog treat. Â Very dry and flavorless. I only took one bite and pushed it to the side.
( - ) Orange Chicken. Â Nothing special. Â I've had better at Panda Express.
Tip: Â Ask the server for menu suggestions. Â I learned this the hard way about this place.
I really like the location, right on lake Michigan at Du Sable harbor.
Will definitely go back for the calamari and a couple cocktails.
I have not seen the physical location, but I do know that they are basically on the bike path at 200 N. LSD. Â I ordered carry out from here and it might have been the best carry out Chinese that I have ever had. Â Everything was fresh and tasted like it had come straight from the kitchen. Â Their crab rangoon is out of this world and I tried some sort of spicy peanut chicken that will ensure happy dreams though the end of July! Â They also offer online ordering with a handful of nice discount options. Â I will be ordering from the new Friendship location more often!
