This place is beautiful. Sadly I have not had the experience of Sleep No More, but I hope I will soon. The decor of this place is astounding! I love the outdoor vibe with the casual patio dining areas. My friend had her birthday here on Tuesday night and I really enjoyed it!
We ordered some appetizers. I had the Grilled cheese with peaches and pecans with house made potato chips. Some of her friends had a cheese plate with various kinds of cheese and jelly spreads with crackers.
I don't drink alcohol anymore, but the bartender made a delicious ginger cucumber drink for me I had to have seconds!
Service was really fast too. I will be back again soon!
I went here twice. Once for my roommate's birthday and once for my own.
My roommate's birthday was fun, we were a smaller group and the bartender made me a cocktail depending on my mood and requests. Great drinks, pricey, but tasty and strong.
My birthday went off without a hitch. The space my event planner, Ilana, was gorgeous and my guests loved the ambiance. My only concern was that the service was slow. I had a minimum to hit and a limited amount of time. Had the service been quicker, people would have ordered more drinks. The food portion sizes were also a little small and nothing great for a party.
However the drinks were fantastic, and the ambiance makes up for everything. One of my favorite, less pretentious rooftops in Manhattan.
I have come here before and its been OK but recently I had a terrible experience.
I made a reservation for two through Open Table and requested that my boyfriend and I be seated in a quite area of the restaurant.
1. We were seated right next to the band. Absolutely no consideration for the note in my reservation.
2. It took us 15 minutes to get seated even though we arrived on time.. which isn't a terrible wait but this is my pet peeve- i do NOT expect to wait when I make a reservation and arrive on the dot.
3. Our server was horrible.
-He never brought us water even though we asked twice. Finally we got a bus boy to do it.
-He took our order and FORGOT TO TELL THE KITCHEN. We waited an hour and a half and finally asked him what the hold up was... he acted like the kitchen was just taking a while but asked me what I ordered again and then sprinted to the kitchen to let them know cause he knew he screwed up. When the food finally came out he forgot a plate.
-He never checked in with us when were done eating to give us our check. We were honestly ready to walk out until we finally were able to flag him down.
The only redeeming things about the night were the fact that the setup was beautiful, and he didn't charge us for the salad that he left out. Otherwise never going back. If you don't care about good service than this place is fine.
I really do love this place. They have everything. They take reservations but if you don't have one don't stress. They usually will be able to accommodate you or you can sit at the bar.
The ambiance is fantastic. Its very whimsical and reminds me of the secret garden. They even have 2 actors roaming around watering plants and looking in awe of where they are. My favorite focal points is the train tracks (very Highline Park of them) masked by greenery. Try sitting in the bench swing.
The bar has mixologists and  there are plenty of places to wander but after 6 is gets packed and hard to find a place to sit. If you would like to eat you may sit at a number of tables. They do have happy hour libations, $7 for glass of wine, $6 for beer, and $8-13 cocktails. I need to come back for one of their punch bowl days.
The food is good too but not too astronomical, My favorites; 1/2 dozen of oysters for $18 and the condiments are fantastic  (Kumquats yum), Mushroom pate interestingly yummy,  and grilled asparagus with quail eggs.
Not too thrilled with the pork shoulder.
I have also had the pleasure of listening to their live band, The Heathens. Completely harmonious to the McKittrick Hotel. The live band plays on the floor below the rooftop and they don't start until 9:30pm. LOVE LOVE LOVE! She rocks my world.
Nice atmosphere but HORRIBLE food and service!! Â
Came for a friends birthday party. Â No hostess around to assist finding the table. Â When we got there we waiting 20 minutes for a waitress, our table was not properly set with candles like the rest of the tables. Â When the waitress came she just stood there waiting for orders, instead of coming around the table taking peoples orders. Â I refused to scream across the table so I waved her over . . . she did not ask my boyfriend how he wanted his steak prepared - it came out raw and was over-seasoned. Â The pork shoulder wasn't bad. Â Friends who got the quiche said it made them feel ill afterwards. Â The toasts with radishes, beets, and egg salad didn't have any place on that menu and they were too fishy tasting. Â Had to ask for water refills twice through the night and service was uneven and slow. Â Finally got the waitress to get us the check but then took another 15 minutes for her to come back and process them. Â I finally went to the nearest waiting station to make sure she broke out the amounts on credit cards correctly. Â She had the audacity to ask me to deliver the checks back to the table and I asked if she would share her tip with me for doing so . . . Ridiculous place - not worth the scene. Â Just go see Sleep No More and get the heck out of there.
Okay, it's a little gimmicky but I honestly love the decor here! Upon walking in you get a big whiff of grass and realize they've laid down real grass on the landing floor! Up the stairs and you get a pretty nice view of the Chelsea area (though the area is not quite gentrified enough yet to be that nice...but still!) The bar area and open seating is actually relatively plentiful and the service prompt. I got a julep and my boyfriend a tequila drink I can't remember...nothing amazing but pretty good. Will be back to try the noshes.
Review Source:I love this place! The best part is the view of Jersey, the delicious cocktails and the fun tapas to share. We ordered a little bit of everything (from shrimp to mushrooms to pork to salmon) Â when we stopped by for dinner on Saturday -- it was all really great!!! Please make reservations. We were a party of 6 people and had to wait one-hour to be seated.
The rooftop seating is ideal, although there is a really cool/jazzy live jazz band that plays indoors on the second level. Whichever dining location you choose, it will be a fun night, for sure! Perfect location for large groups, girls night out, date nights and a refreshing solo experience. No joke, all of my friends feel in love with this place. The service is on point and all dishes are meant to be shared. Such a comfy spot:-)
It's a hidden gem!
Arrived outside the entrance and greeted by a friendly hostess. We waited for an elevator to arrive; however, it was an extremely dark ride up to the rooftop. Upon entering the rooftop, you'll notice a grand walkway decorated with greenery, leading directly to the bar. It felt like our own Secret Garden.
Menu is limited. I wouldn't recommend coming here if you are starving as they have a small selection. Most of the dishes are accompaniments to drinks (e.g., cheese).
We ordered the jalapeno chips (not spicy) and cheese platter.
The highlight was our drink, the "Breakfast in Martinique." Cocktails cost $15.
Service was fantastic. Our waitress was friendly and checked in when we needed more drinks.
Overall a nice discovery and calming rooftop patio with a relaxed environment.
Nearby rooftop bar that we came to after going to Sleep No More (which by the way, is a must see when in NYC). Â It's very beautiful and lovely with candlelit tables and vines growing everywhere, but I remember there was some kind of ridiculous catch to sitting at a table so we ended up just getting a cocktail at the bar and walking around. We didnt stay too long though. Â Cocktails were great and so was the ambiance but I dont think I would come back here just because there are probably better rooftop bars.
Review Source:Gallow Green sets high expectations for itself and then fails to deliver - by a substantial margin. The service was remarkably poor and inattentive for a half empty restaurant. The two plates were overpriced and substandard. If you are going to charge high-end prices then at least provide something bordering on imaginative. We asked for a non-alcoholic alternative to the famed punch and were given lemonade. Really? This is the level of innovation? I could have bought lemonade from a ten year old on a street corner! This establishment is blessed with a wonderful outdoor setting in one of New York's trendiest locations. It's a real shame both service and food turned out to be more of an over-priced curse!
Review Source:It's a unique space. Â At least from what I experienced, it's strictly a place for cocktails and nibblets. I took some out of towners to Gallow Green, they had never seen anything like it. Â
We were unfortunate in that it's an outdoor space and the day we went it was raining but I think on a warm summer night it would be lovely romantic interlude. Â If you're going for the food, the menu is limited to bar food though. Â So plan to eat dinner someplace else. Â Too bad really because it would be a great place for dining.
Access to the venue is like entering a speakeasy, dimly lit entry way and elevator. Â There is actually and elevator operator something you don't see in NY much anymore.
It was a fun experience but as I said don't expect to find anything more than bar food items on the menu. Â The bartended did make a good negroni.
Reservation: 9:30, seated: 10:30. "We'll come find you shortly." Yeah, right. That alone was enough to kill our enthusiasm. In addition, the food, while pretty tasty, felt over-priced for what you get.
Nice space, and the waitress was helpful and understanding of our frustration. My advice: eat elsewhere, have a drink, and then go downstairs to listen to the band. The Heathens were awesome..
Beautiful and interesting place, especially on a sunny day! Came here for brunch on a Saturday morning that was sunny and not too cool and not too warm, just right. Service was great, and the ambiance is one to experience.
The food, unfortunately, was only okay and not entirely worth the price we paid. We had the smoked salmon, the mushroom pate, and the pork shoulder. The mushroom pate was our favorite out of the three: the salmon and pate both had too much sourness in the flavor (too much lemon / lime?), and the pork had a gamey taste to it that didn't please the senses. Flavors didn't mix well and the sourness would make me shiver sometimes.
That said, not sure if I'd go back for the food, but still an interesting place!
A friend wanted to meet up to take me out for a late b-day celebration and picked this spot. The entrance area into the hotel was extremely dimly lit and appeared as if you were walking into the Tower of Terror ride at Disney World. But when I learned it's the same place where the play Sleep No More (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsleepnomore.com%2F&s=1fe203659d2b5fa532d46a9ae1cfebb6426f9368232c7403624fad7d409c56c7" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://sleepnomore.com/</a>) is performed it made sense. I heard the play is great so I may be checking this out too.
But back to the Gallow Green. Once we stepped off the elevator and walked up the stairs to the rooftop, we walked into a magical secret garden. The decor and ambiance was absolutely enchanting. Tons of greenery, plants, and vines. There were railroad tracks that led you to the bar, a cute vintage touch. The rooftop was lit with soft lighting and candles. I literally could have slept there if given a blanket and outlet to charge my phone and laptop. :-) Shouts out to their interior decorator. The music resembled the score from the newly released Great Gatsby movie (awesome film) and I just loved it.
I'll be honest and share I wasn't a fan of their menu; I'm not sure if it was just a late night menu or the usual. So I ended up not ordering food. But the drinks were reasonably priced and my friend said their drinks were mixed well. I'd love to go back for Brunch which I may do this weekend. Check it out for yourself.
** Saturday Night Review **
This place is located in dingiest neighborhoods in Manhattan where all the big clubs used to be back in the day. Â Around the corner from Marquee this place is hard to find with no board or sign -- but you will see a big line outside.
We were there before 12 but the usually Saturday night drama started with the bouncers. Â Good thing we had 3 girls and 2 guys -- having good looks helps as well. Â The bouncer got us out of the line and let us skip ahead to go up. Â The entrance is stuffy and leads to a old school elevator - hot and sweaty by the time you get to the top. The penthouse level is where the DJ and dance floor is.
We headed straight to the rooftop. Â The bartenders all have British / Australian accent. Â They take time making drinks which is good if it is a small bar -- but given it is Saturday night and place was packed, it was annoying waiting 10 minutes to put our order in. Â
Place is like a patio garden. Â Have to watch when you walk as the floor is not even and have log steps. Â Crowd was generally good looking. Â
Drinks were pricey -- typical of NYC and rooftops. Â
Downer -- Last call was not announced and bar shut down at 1:30. Â Who does that in NYC??
Quality well-decorated rooftop with slow services.
You don't need a reservation, but be prepare to "sweet-talk" your way upstairs on a crowded night.
My friend and I arrived at Gallow Green on a Friday night around 10:30pm.  There was a small wait, maybe a total of 5 people ahead of us.  The entrance is NEXT to the Sleep No More, so be sure you're in the right line.  A bouncer was at the door checking ID and a "promoter" type of greeter regulated the line with this  IPAD and bluetooth headset checking in people with "reservation". Â
We didn't have a a reservation, but since it was only the 2 of us they send us up without a problem. Â Once you enter the door, you are in this tiny lobby where an rustic -theme elevator takes you to the top.
The floor the elevator drop you off isn't Gallow Green, it's a separated dark lounge/bar that plays loud top-40's music. Â An staff immediately greeted us and ask what we were there for. Â We told them we were there for Gallow Green and she said the roof is really crowded at the moment. Â We asked if we can just go upstairs to "check it out" Â and she showed us a separate set of stairs that takes you to the roof.
Upon arriving to the top (finally, after what felt like an obstacle-course); we were  transported into this labyrinth-theme garden with a 360 panoramic NYC skyline view.  It was beauty.  Music is soft, and everyone were well-dressed (although there wasn't a dress code) .  I noticed a bar in the back and an open kitchen to the right.  Another staff greeted us again (with her IPAD) and ask if we had a reservation.  I kindly reply No, and ask if we can get a table anyway?  She said in order to get a table, we must order food but that there are standing room by the bar.  We didn't mind ordering food so we put our name down for a table.  After 10 minutes we were seated.
Here, we waited at our table for at least 30 minutes before our server arrived to take our order. Â Our server also seemed very pre-occupied. Â The cocktail menu is very simple, and the food menu was short and uninteresting. Â She was nice and answered our questions but at the same time give us a lot of pressure and hurrying us on our drinks order. Â After taking our order she disappear for another 40 minutes before our drinks arrive. Yes- the place was a bit crowded, but there was definitely not enough servers. Â Management should consider relocating their "greeter/hostess" to become "servers" Â The ratio didn't make any sense.
Overall, we had a great time despite the ultra slow service. Â They sure do a good job preventing to over-crowd the space. But I wish the staff can overall be more efficient: less greeters; more services. Â I've had better cocktail experiences; but the ambience is winner as the perfect chick-killer.
Came to check this place out on a Sunday afternoon. The place was not packed at all, maybe 6-7 tables sat tops. The waiter did not even acknowledge us until 15 minutes or so after we sat. We had a deal we bought on Gilt and when I told him I had the voucher on my phone, it seemed to really stump him. He said he had to find the manager.... not sure if he was because we kept seeing him walk around serving other customers. We left. And I had my gilt purchase refunded. Definitely will not be returning to this place and I do not recommend it. The menu is WAY over priced and not worth the poor service.
Review Source:Cute rooftop bar with beautiful view and one-of-a-kind ambiance.
I went for the Herb Festival i.e. their opening weekend event for the summer. Â Tickets cost $35 apiece. Â We didn't know what to expect but ended up pleasantly surprised. Â
Ticket included one drink each and a food platter with 4 different kinds of (pretty tasty) mini sandwiches and 4 little dessert items. Â The rooftop was very pretty at dusk with a dreamy retro feel and lush greenery though incredibly cold in early spring - luckily they brought out blankets for everyone. Â My only gripe was they didn't have a single warm item on the menu - really? Â Cup of tea would have been great.
At one point a little pagan parade thingy took place and actors came around handing out miniature planters, packs of seeds, and pastel chocolate-covered almonds as party favors. Â Cute.
Can't really say what it's normally like but what I saw went along pretty well with the whole McKittrick Hotel feel. Â Definitely more there than the average rooftop bar. Â
Worth checking out, even if you haven't been to SNM the show.
Even though this place (at least right now) has 90% of its offerings dedicated to alcoholic drinks, do make reservations to make sure you can get a table. Just like with the show, there is no sign of the restaurant anywhere, just a man in suit with the list in hand. My friend actually walked by it several times before she finally addressed this man in suit. He will radio the elevator and it will be sent for you. Yes, your visit starts this cool. You will  proceed inside and be taken to the rooftop in an old creeky elevator.
Once on the rooftop you will find yourself in a lush garden with waiters and other staff dressed just like the characters from the show and it only adds to the experience.
Again, there is not much to eat and the bill will be high. $14-17 for tiny plates with food, $25 for half a dozen of oysters. Drinks are $14. Cheese, pate and charcuterie platters may be the best bang for the buck but don't count on getting full here. There may be more food offerings since the place is so new but as of May 21, it was more of a drinking rather than food spot.
The view off the roof is not that great but being on the roof feels amazing. There is cover above your head in case of rain but overall it's a very airy place with light breeze cooling you down and the same cover shading you from the sun.
Overall I loved it, taking one star off obnoxious prices for tiny plates and for the very limited menu.
We had a nice round of apps and cocktails -- charcuterie plate with the pickle pot, which was a redundant order, since the charcuterie came with a small pickle pot in a portion better suited to what we would have wanted. (If the waitress had pointed tis out, we would have ordered another and likely more expensive plate.)
The pickle pot included fiddleheads, which I loved. Perfect for the tone of Sleep No More since they can be toxic if prepared incorrectly.
If you make full use of the charcuterie platter -- toast point, condiment, meat, pickled vegetable -- you get a pretty damned good bite each time. Cocktails delicious.
Service pleasant but slow -- not because the staff was lazy, but because I think they were a little short-handed.
Band was lively but not overly loud or intrusive. Atmosphere cute, creative, like the McKittrick.
I know it's affiliated with Sleep No More -- which I've seen a few times and enjoyed -- but I didn't need the actors milling around picking at the vegetation. Might have been better to have wait staff just a bit more in character, like the bartenders when you're waiting to start your trip through Sleep No More, or just to skip the theatrics entirely. Â
Also, didn't seem that all the tables were full, which is funny because the reservation system had been booked solid weeks in advance. That seems like a shame, really, when there are so few options for after-work drinks near Starrett-Lehigh. Maybe they could open it up to walk-ins.
The ambiance is nice. We had the toast and the quiche for food. Quiche was awesome! Toast was dumb. Service blew. And the menu was lacking, and they didn't have any punch bowls. WTF? oh yeah, and if you don't have a reservation, then forget about it.
It would be a nice place to have a few drinks if you could easily come here, but you can't easily go there...and once you're there your food options are limited. I would possibly come back, but it's not the top of my list.
Gallow Green has a great theme working for it... that's about it.
What the lack in substance they definitely make up for in execution. The punches are so-so and can be a bit watery. However, they serve them in phenomenally elaborate ways, I'm thinking of the absinthe punch of course.
The staff members are constantly in character which adds a bit of allure. I will say, they occasionally break character to be less than pleasant- shout-out to the hostess. The menu is a bit underwhelming/simple. All in all, a great spot for the ambiance but just know that's why you're there and be ready to pay for it.
What a way to escape! Gallow Green is truly something else. Lush, enchanting, and peaceful. A perfect summertime respite.
I came upon this place one sweaty summertime afternoon thanks to an invite from a friend. The line outside/downstairs was cray, but somehow we finagled our way inside w/an online reservation (or something).
Once in, the greeters, attendants & staff all partake in creating a most unique yet subtle time travel experience. The combination of cocktails, decor, music (charming 4-pc band), and cool rooftop breeze complete the ambiance. You feel as though you're certainly not in NYC anymore. It was as if I was back in time, enjoying a drink on a beautiful wraparound porch of a fascinating Savannah home.
The Gallow Green is gorgeous.
Absolute enchantment, a little spot that literally takes you to another time, and another place.
The food, pretty good, four stars. Â The drinks, not bad, 4 stars. Â The atmosphere, place, decor, ambiance, people, music, band, EVERYTHING? 5+ stars anyday!!! Â Totally blown away by the creative minds that conceptualized this place and made it a reality, hands down a must-try experience (when it's warmer) and definitely a spot I can't wait to take more friends to to visit!
Beautiful rooftop space and kind of a pleasant yet eerie vibe on a windy, near Halloween eve. Â
Loved the actors in part and the costumes of the festive party crowd. Â
We were able to sneak into the after party next door without masquerade costumes which was awesome. Â Danced the night away.
Train tracks running through the restaurant, situated on a rooftop? Check.
Bizarre, abandoned street cars serving as space to socialize? Check.
Equally as bizarre wait staff and patrons? Check.
Briefly summarized, this restaurant takes the cake for bizarreness factor. You have actors from sleep no more walking around with blankets dancing to the beat of their own drum, and tattered fabric breezing in the wind only aiding to the already haunting feel of is restaurant.
Food was decent, drinks incredible. Highly recommend trying the punch bowls. Interesting ingredients and with a cool table-side preparation.
One thing I will make note of, don't expect speedy service from the wait staff. Â We were comp'd some sort of salad because we waited so long for the food. However, don't let this deter you.
Overall, amazing experience. Such a wonderful restaurant.
For those of you who have been to Sleep No More they recently opened a rooftop restaurant and bar that is SUPER cool. Â It looks like a secret garden hidden on a rooftop overlooking the stars. Â VERY romantic and yet still fun for large groups especially if you order a punchbowl! Â I feel like you could throw your wedding here and not buy a single decoration. Â One of the secrets of the place is there are actually six bathrooms you just have to go to the other side of the bathroom area to find the other three. Â Also if you ask nicely they will give you really warm, comfy blankets since it can get a little chilly.
They have live music that fits right in with the 1920s theme and even actors wandering around the restaurant to speak to you, never dropping character. Â I've been there twice in the last two weeks and I LOVE it. Â I've eaten almost everything on the menu but my top favorites are the "Blonde in Peril" cocktail, the grilled corn crostini, pulled brisket toast, the cheese platter, and the scotch quail eggs. Â Oh and the Claret Cup punch - that's a must.
