I would have rated this at 4 stars for the last several years as the food is above average and both my girlfriend and I have made this a repeat comfort food offense. The soups especially the split pea that they have on Thursday is really really good maybe even better than grandmas (Sorry Grandma).

After a long hiatus I recently started to go back, the food is the same, good portions, good flavor, decent value (they tend to run a bit pricey) but  the service and management might need to be reevaluated. I've had some difficulties getting my order right and nothing us more disappointing than getting home and discovering that someone made a mistake. I'm willing to let it go once or twice but 3 times in a row?

My last time there was the final straw and incited complaint. The cooks were a bit overwhelmed with the nightly rush, I waited patiently at the window for 20 minutes to get my food and when another patron asked about her food and the cook started being defensive towards me and angrily asking for my ticket to make sure my order is right. I gave it to him not expecting a bit thing and when he turned around he started swearing in Spanish and calling me names. I promptly confronted him, told him I understood, and that I felt it was inappropriate. I informed the manager, who apologized and asked if I wanted anything, I wasn't looking for a freebie so I just asked him to talk to his employee. A few minutes later the employee gives me my bag of food, reads back my order, and denies that he cussed me out. I gave up, walked out, drove home, only to find out my order was all wrong. I called the manager to complain and he refused to offer me a refund, he demanded I bring my receipt (which had been taken by his employee) or would not refund my money. I will contest the charge with my credit card company and am considering never going there again.

Obviously, I had a terrible service experience but if you go, check your order and enjoy your food.

Food has always been good - ribs are my fav. Service is friendly and the place is clean. Who cares what the interior designer was thinking. I'm there for the food.

BBQ is average at best.  I was expecting more flavor.  The interior needs to be updated.  The booths and chairs make me feel like I'm in a 3rd world country.

I wish they had the ability to separate the food from the experience. I'll round up to 4 stars but for me, it's 3.5.

I was there last night with two other folks and it was our first time visiting around 7:15pm. Now, it was crowded, line was long to place an order. I like the fact they had to-go menus available to read while waiting in line. It also appeared most were placing orders to go. We wanted to eat in.

We ordered two pulled pork platters and one brisket platter , 3 soft drinks and the bill ended up being $41.  You can decide if that's pricey or not.

Yes, the pulled pork and briskey was good, however when looking at the sizing of the sides, you got a huge piece of toast, a good amount of fries (option of potato) and then this little pea cup size container of beans (option was cole slaw). There was no sense of balance since the amount of meat was actually more than I could eat and I'm one who can eat a lot.

Also, are the owners too cheap to only offer 1 refill? Seriously...Now, before you go saying anything, just look at other places and it's the little things that make a difference. How about having to ask for napkins since none are out or were given with our meals then given only a few for 3 adults. I had to go to ask a second time and got the are you kidding me look.

Perhaps it was just a timing issue. Maybe it's a better lunch or a quick to go place than sitting in for dinner but we all agreed, we won't go back to sit for dinner.

Great group of guys with great food.

I usually get the gyro and sometimes get the ribs. It's all good! Also the fries are just as good as Portillos.

I had the rib tips, they were good, but overpriced for the amount.I saw a few lunch specials on the window,so I'll go back during lunch to try more items when I'm out that way.

So this is not a fancy place.  It's a pretty regular place that serves some tasty stuff.

The sauce is nice and tangy and I also really liked the taste and texture of the pork on the chopped pork sandwich.  It's definitely not a tidy sandwich to eat - I had to eat a lot of the meat off the bread and then attempt it as a sandwich and even then I was, well, pretty sauced up at that point.  Not complaining in the least, though - just make sure you have enough napkins to clean up with!  I didn't have any extra sides though the cole slaw was pretty middle of the road.  The consensus was that the fries were good, according to my dining companions and it was noted that the baked beans were pretty good, too.  Good portions for the price, particularly if you get one of the combos.  You can get one free refill on a soft drink if you dine in.

I was happy not to leave smelling like a wood pit, as was my concern, with the pile of wood stacked outside the building.  That means we can give it another go!

It's not the location. Convenient only to Naperville car salespeople.

It's not the exterior decor. Unassuming barn.

It's not the interior decor. The inside of an unassuming barn.

    It's the food.

Our family has been dozens of times, primarily for lunch, and the reviews have always been off the charts. Everything is great, Athenian chicken, ribs, pork, brisket, gyros and don't forget the crinkle cut fries, which always seem to be perfectly cooked, seasoned and served piping hot.

Family run, with a real passion for customer service and awesome food!

This place is the best Gyro's in the area. BBQ sauce to dip the fries in is to die for. Very warm and friendly staff. I always over eat because it is so good, then end up feeling terrible the rest of the afternoon. When I have guests in town, I always take them here. I've ventured out and tried the BBQ once or twice, and it was excellent as well. As I have said in other posts, you know it's good when Naperville PD is eating there as well.

2nd time ordering here. WOW! I love smoked meats, and this place has it down to a science. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich special on Friday 9/14/12 at lunch time. It was super busy. The location is strange as it's in the middle of what looks like an abandoned shopping plaza, but ideal that it's right on the corner of Ogden Ave and Jefferson Ave. The BBQ sauce is saucy, and they use red pepper flakes in their recipe...which I happen to LOVE, but spicy isn't for everybody, so buyer beware. The special came with a sandwich, fries or soup, and a soft drink. I ordered the soup which was cream of potato. OMG, it was F**KING amazing!!!!!!!!! I ate everything except the bun that the sandwich came on.

I don't know if the store manager reads these Yelp reviews, but in the future, would it be possible to make a gluten-free sandwich type thing by putting BBQ meat on top of a baked potato? I've had this at another smokehouse and it is really good. Your recipe for smoked BBQ meat is 2nd to none, so I will keep going back regardless. I just wanted to submit this suggestion if it's not offered already. I didn't see it on the menu, granted, your menu is so extensive, I may have overlooked it. Thanks! I HIGHLY recommend checking this place out!

Been coming here for a while now and I'm kind of biased towards this place just so you all know. I work close to here and my coworkers go here about once every month. I get their pulled pork everytime, it's about 9 bucks for the sandwich, fries and a drink. You get one free refill.

I love the pork here. Only once has it not satisfied me. I also use this place as my comparison to other pulled porks now. Comes out fresh and hot, and dripping with bbq sauce on a warm bun. Probably going to need a fork and a lot of napkins to eat it. The fries are good. They're the thick ones, usually crunchy, with a soft inside. So a big price but you get a lot of food. I usually can't finish my fries since there's too much food.

They have some tvs but it's usually on the news. The atmosphere is as if you are in an old school saloon. Doesn't look like the cleanest of places but gets pretty packed at lunch still. Best part is the guy who calls the order number when your food is ready. I can't really describe it, it's just funny/awesome. Def worth a try if in the area. Planning on trying the ribs next from some other reviews I've read.

Gemato's Wood Pit BBQ is a small little Barbeque joint off of Ogden avenue in Naperville. In addition to selling barbeque fair like Ribs, pulled pork and chicken they also sell burgers, gyros and hot dogs.

In visiting Gemato's Wood Pit BBQ today I decided to try the Chicago style hot dog and fries. The hot dog I received was a skinless frank on a soft non-poppy seed bun. The hot dog itself had a somewhat different flavor than most Chicago style red hots with a bit more spice than usual. There was no hint of celery salt on this dog and there was a thick pickle that was not as long as the dog itself, two very large tomato slices on top and a lot of mustard, and relish. The overall combination just didn't taste particularly great, the pickle flavor was more powerful and overwhelmed the other ingredients. The combination of the taste of the red hot, pickle, tomato, onions and condiments really didn't combine well.  This was a below average hot dog at best, if after eating a particular dish I feel some regret on wasted money and calories, we have a bad sign. And that was definitely the case here.

The fries included were of the crinkle cut variety. They had a very crispy outside but not a particularly soft inside. They weren't too salty or too greasy but in general just lacked flavor. If you eat these you'll probably want to put ketchup on them as they are fairly bland by themselves.

In other visits I've tried ribs, pulled pork and a few other items and don't recall them being particularly great either. Overall while not terrible I am not that impressed with Gemato's food.

I have never been disappointed here. The staff is so friendly and now famous with their appearance on Chicago's Best TV. Good news southsiders, look for another location in Worth on 111th. The ribs are almost as good cold. So meaty! Great daily specials. Full slab dinner $15 Monday and Tuesday. Their soups are superb. Few beers on tap. Fresh brewed tea for me.

So many good reviews, so I took my family hoping for some real BBQ. BBQ and Greek? Huh? Which are you? I was confused by the menu, but the guy was nice enough to help me through the process. Wife got Ribs and Fries and I got Combo with Pulled Pork/Brisket with Grecian Potatoes.

We go sit down and I grabbed high chairs for our twin girls. The chairs were really sticky. When I got them to the table, I went to move the table a bit and the table was all sticky. They could use so deep cleaning there and little alarm bells were going off my head. They called our number so I grabbed our food and sat down and did the ole' Gordon Ramsay blessing. "Please do not let me get food poisoning." The food was ok... I wanted some real BBQ with some real wood fire smoke flavor. The ribs had it, but not the rest.

So, we leave and as soon as I step outside my stomach started to hurt. Then my wife's too. We get home and she runs to the bathroom. Right now it is 6am as I write this. She finally just fell asleep after being up all night with out kids taking care of them. One has been throwing up and both having serious stomach pains. It is hard to comfort them when I too am in pain.

Thank you for not only serving a disappointing meal, but also for keeping us up all night with stomach issues. That means this will also ruin my day off from work today. I will never be back again. I was going to email them with my reviews, but they do not have an email address on their website. I will also be posting on every day review place I can find since I am really tired and pissed out right now.

I went here yesterday with 5 other family members and every person loved their food. I was a bit hesitant to try their food because their parking lot usually has less than 10 people every time I pass by.

I had the half slab of ribs - the meat was so tender and juicy, and literally fell off the bone.  It wasn't as messy that way which I was a fan of.  The sauce is a perfect wood smokey bbq flavor.  Others in my party tried the bbq chicken sandwich, philly cheese steak and bbq prok sandwiches - all were winners.

The sides were delicious too - perfect fries with the sandwiches and perfectly cooked baked potato with the half slab.

Also, the inside is a cute western theme, with decor of Annie Oakley and Buffalo Bill photos that adorn the wall.

So happy I finally tried this place - I can't wait to go back to get the ribs again!

Went here last night and my boyfriend and I split a full slab. It was AMAZING. I didn't even get dirty because I was able to use my knife to slice the meat right off the bone; it just came right off. So tender and flavorful, OMG! For your side, you should get the Greek fries, very tasty too. So good, moderate prices. For the both of us, sides and drinks, it was about $35.

Whenever I want gyros, this is my go to place in Naperville. The staff here is super friendly and the place smells amazing. They put a lot of pride into their work here.

Get your food from a little window connected to the kitchen, and the kitchen staff is always quick with a joke when making the handoff. The place doesn't take itself too seriously (except for the food of course), which always makes my experience great, whether I'm dining in or carrying out!

I went to Gematos with my friends the other day.  The thing that first struck me was how amazing it smelled in this place.  The wood pit... the barbecue... the perfect marriage to appeal to my senses.  The food was prepared quickly and there were available tables.  As my friends each unwrapped their meals I salivated.  I cant wait to go back.

I gave it four stars because I was poor and couldnt afford to eat.  My friends are jerks and wouldnt let me sample theirs!

I've been to this place twice, so I feel comfortable giving it 2 stars. Gemato's has an uphill battle, though, since I just moved from Kansas City which has some of, if not the best BBQ I've ever had.

By any standards, Gemato's is not the greatest of BBQ, even for Chicagoland. It's flavor is par at best, but I will say they can serve it up in good time. You place an order as you walk in and pick it up from a window. Since they don't really use their number system it's tough to know when your order is done so you have to kind of hang out while you wait. The tables are first come-first serve as well.

I've had BBQ and a Gyro. The BBQ was OK, but not fantastic. The flavor was not noteworthy nor had a kick I could recall. The fries were OK and the beans were less than exciting for me. Overall the BBQ was sub-par for my liking but others may not feel the same.

A gyro is hard to mess up and is nearly the same everywhere. It was nothing special so it's a safe bet if you go here. I think more people would like it than the BBQ if you're on the fence. That being said, it's good they have several options to choose from so everyone can eat here.

If you want basic BBQ this is your place, but I'd look around before settling on Gemato's.

    Domaine DuPage on tap.......nuff said!

But if you have a craving to dig on a little bit of piggy, I enjoyed the BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich. However I would love for Gemato's to serve fresh cut fries rather than crinkle cut. I did enjoy their BBQ sauce, its sweet flavor is why I would return for a half slab sometime in the near future.

The decor has a Texas flair meets Bronco the bull. Friendly staff and quick service.
Oh and I almost forgot, their coleslaw is creamy...WINNER!

Finally had a chance to try it and we liked it. We both ordered the bbq combo so that we could try a few items at once. The combo comes with ribs, chicken, pulled pork (or brisket if you prefer) fries, slaw, and garlic bread. It was all very good. For $15 per combo it wasnt bad and because its counter service you dont have to leave a tip.

BBQ is once of those things where people get a little goofy about the taste. Not everyone is going to like any one place. This place does a good job and is worth trying, then when you are done trying it come on back to yelp about it.

How far Gematos has come is astounding. They've been in the same location for a long time. Their layout use to be pretty lame, neon pink light tubes and an overall atmosphere that would fit a crappy diner located somewhere off Roosevelt. However, the food never failed to make you happy and satisfied.

Now, their a full fledged BBQ shack. They've got a cowboy theme that's sort of fraudulent only because it's forced. Oh well, I'm not visiting Gematos for their award winning cowboy artifacts on the walls. It's all about DAT Q!!!!

The menu has something for everyone. Ranging from burgers and dogs all the way to brisket and ribs. They make one of the better Gyro's I've ever had. All the BBQ is wood smoked and cooked nice and slow. Food's great and the guys behind the counter know what their doing. You're in good hands.

Gematos is a staple of Naperville. I'm happy to provide them with my patronage. They deserve your business because there's basically just Portillo's competing with them, and Dick can't make ya a Gyro or good BBQ. If ya think Barnelli's is good, get your mouth fixed.

Amazing.  One of my favorite places around here to eat.  I'd like to say I've ordered more than just the gyros, but I'd be lying to you.  I have tried bites of friend's ribs/brisket/pulled pork, and they've always been great, but nothing can stand up to their gyros.  It's to the point now that I've stopped ordering them anywhere else, because I know they can't stack up.  The fries are always done right, and the greek potatoes are amazing too.  I always get extra tzatziki, because it perfectly compliments the potatoes as much as it does the gyro.

The staff has always been friendly with me, so I don't get the reviews that talk about how rude they are.  It's the kind of place I'm glad to live close to, because it's so easy for me to go and get things I like for a decent price.  This is a must-try in Naperville.  Don't deprive yourself any longer.

The service was friendly, the place was clean and had a fun cowboy theme, and we got our food literally minutes after we ordered.

I also had a bite of the brisket and it was very moist and flavorful.  No doubt, I'm going to make a point to stop by again and try their ribs!

We ordered take-out from here last night, and sampled the barbecued chicken dinner and gyro's plate.  When you walk in to order/pickup, the smell is so delicious inside the restaurant, probably because of the wood pit.  The staff was friendly and we only waited 5-10 minutes for our food.  Everything was very good, the chicken was served with a baked potato, garlic bread, and coleslaw.  I really liked the coleslaw, and I'm generally  not a slaw eater.  The gyro's, wow, that might have been my favorite.  The meat was seasoned perfectly and was fantastic.  We will definitely be back here.

*Also to note, there is no bar here, but alcohol is served.*

Ohh Gemato.  You are a stubborn, brilliant man.

The gyros are fantastic, and the Greek potatoes will make you want to slap your mother.  The BBQ brisket, beef, and chicken are delectable, and did I mention those violent Greek potatoes?

We have purchased their catering deals for parties, which I think is the only reason our friends want to visit us.  While ordering, your eyes will definitely be bigger than your stomach...but somehow at the end of the meal, you'll find yourself licking the bottom of the plate, hoping some sauce accidentally found it's way there.

I say all this, however, with a slight chip on my shoulder.

You see, Gemato and myself had a great relationship in earlier days.  We'd talk on the phone until the wee hours of the night, see the latest movies, I even took him home to meet my parents.  But this past year, something happened.

The last 3 times we ordered, there were major things wrong with our meal.  Missing food, wrong items, fatty meat, etc...which, I forgave, because I loved Gemato.  But when I called them up to see how they could fix the problems, they said they wouldn't.  Not only that, but they were harsh with me saying things like, "you should have checked the bag before you left!", and "if you didn't like the meat, don't eat here".

It's truly unfortunate, but you know what they say...It is better to have loved and lost, than never to have eaten those amazing Greek potatoes.

I tried this place because I read all the reviews that raved about how good the barbecue was. I've driven by several times and never really thought much of it. Thursday,  I finally made the trek in.

Overall, it wasn't bad...but it wasn't great either. The prices seemed a little steep for pick-up window food. I had the barbecue pork sandwich. The sauce is really good but the pork left something to be desired. When I order barbeque pork from a BBQ place, I assume it's going to be tender and juicy; this was dry and lacked a lot of flavor.

The "side" of coleslaw was a small sauce cup of typical mayo base coleslaw. It was nothing to really rave about. For over $7 with tax, I would have expected something more for a side. Maybe adding even a pickle would have made it seem less sparse. They also charge for extra BBQ sauce. So, I might return, but probably wouldn't go out of my way.

This place is delicious.  The experience starts in the parking lot where you can smell the smoked meat as you walk towards the front entrance.  We arrived around 1145 am.  The place was empty as we arrived before the lunch rush.  We ordered the good old number one, which is a BBQ pulled pork sandwich with fries for us.  Everything about this meal was great.  The place is clean, the decor is nice and the food is excellent, what more can you ask for.  I am sure they have other delicious choices, but I have yet to stray from the usual.

Go here, you won't be disappointed.

I stopped in here around 9:00 on a Saturday evening and the place was pretty empty. It was my first time at Gemato's, so I took a few minutes to look over the menu at the counter before placing my order.Their menu has your typical bbq fare (pulled pork, beef brisket, ribs, etc), but they also offer some Greek options (gyros, kabobs, etc), burgers, and hot dogs.

The ribs, gyros, and pulled pork sandwich were all calling my name, but I made the decision to go with the pulled pork sandwich and I'm glad I did. The meet was super tender, but more importantly, the bbq sauce was perfect and the ratio of meat to sauce was right on!

Gemato's was definitely an unexpected, excellent find.

This is a place that does a lot of things very well. I've been eating here for years now and glad I stopped there years back. When I worked not far from there, my co-workers & I would order there 2-3 times/ week.

As I said, they do a lot of things well. Not having food seasoned properly won't happen here. There are plenty of spices in every dish but doesn't overpower the meat. The char-broiled burgers are absolutely fantastic. The meat is juicy and the toppings are all fresh. They also have the "Grecian Specialties", focusing mostly on the gyros. I'm not a fan of the chicken gyros at all (possibly because I'm so tuned in with lamb). I think they make one of the best gyros in the area (fantastic).

The BBQ is also very good. If you want to venture out a little bit, try the rib tips. Too many places don't do these very well but that isn't true here. All their BBQ is smoked and cooked to perfection. The brisket may surprise some people because brisket is VERY hard to do properly. I had the lamb kabobs once and enjoyed them as well. The ribs are very well done. In other words, their platters are can't miss!!!

Cole slaw & garlic bread would be enough as it relates to side but you also have a choice of baked potato, Grecian potato, or fries. I, as a rule, do NOT like chili with beans. I even went as far as to ask on of the Soto Brothers (the owners) if the chili had beans. After I mentioned how I didn't like chili with beans, he offer me a sample (by that time, I had been coming here for years). I took his offer, tried it, and ordered the chili right after

All and all a great value for your dollar. The portions are very generous and you may take some home should you eat in. The owners & staff are fantastic people. When a place is busy during non-peak times, that's a good sign of quality for me. I put Gemato's in two lists because I was unsure where to put them.

After driving past the building many times, I have never thought to actually stop in. To be honest, it's located in a lot with an old abandoned Kmart building or something. Not really the most inviting of places. Surely they can't have good food?

Well fast forward to a month ago when I was at the Pontiac dealership taking it up the ass in car repairs. One of the employees recommended Gemato's as a lunch option. I walked across the street to try it out. Inside it's really cheesy with cowboys and horses galore. I tried the beef brisket sandwich. Now I've had many a brisket sandwich and I know how awful someone can screw it up. My expectations were low. But when I bit into it, it was absolutely delicious! Honestly this may have been the best BBQ I've had in a long time. The meat was so tender it was practically melting in my mouth.

I was so impressed that I actually took my mom here for dinner that night. I'm so glad to find a hidden gem in Naperville. Gemato's is now my BBQ place in the suburbs.

This is one of those places that I've passed a number of times, remarked upon, and never checked out...until this week. The young man and I were going to have lunch at Le Siam on Monday, but it was closed. DENIED! So we completely shifted gears and went BBQ. He assured me of its greatness, and he was right!

I am a pork person when it comes to barbeque (ribs or pulled pork) and went with the former: half a slab, which came with two sides. He went with a brisket sandwich.

We were both fully satisfied with our meals. For one thing, you taste that wood grilling in this food. Yum! I'm loathe to use terms you've heard before, but my ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender, and the sauce was a good balance of sweet, tangy and smoky.
I'm not big on beef BBQ (20 years in TX did not drill it into me), but I tried a bite of his brisket and it was quite tender and tasty (and did not commit the cardinal sin of brisket: dryness). Each of us thought our own dish was the best, which means we were both happy.

The only thing I could have lived without in this place was the cheesy "Southwestern" decor (again, having lived 20 years of my life in Texas, I'm sick of "cowboy chic," and this wasn't even that: a lot of it consisted of planks of wood with slogans like "Yep" or "Nope" on them. The most egregious example of this was by the front door, which distracted me on the way out: "Hairyew". It took a couple of tries for us to figure out that it was the redneck pronunciation of "How are you." Insert eye roll here.)

Overall, overlook the dorky decor and tuck into some bang-up chow. Yee-haw!!

Get's 5 stars for being what it is - the best Greek BBQ place on earth...

This place NOT win you date points for branding, elegance and upon my approach even made me thinking of going somewhere else due to the hot dogs and more tagline...

This is NOT why you are there. You are there because, sadly, it's one of the few places in Chicagoland that properly smokes BBQ meat!

I had the combo platter, bit of ribs, bbq pork, greek potatoes and garlic bread! All were good and I left wanting more ribs...anyone wanna pick me up from Chicago and go, let me know.

I'm stingy with the 5 stars, but Gemato's is an easy call... best BBQ I can find west of North Carolina. I like the BBQ pork sandwich myself. The beef brisket and BBQ chicken are great as well. Oh, and yes, the ribs!

"So Bill," you say, "incredible BBQ... is that it?"
Well, that should be enough (jeez, you're demanding!), but no. Gemato's has awesome fries. The ambiance is absolutely genuine, and the guys who work there are nice as can be. The prices are lunch-reasonable when you consider the mega-portions that you get.

And the other reviewers are right... the place smells incredible from 100 yards away. They have stacks of wood outside the place to fire up the grills inside.

C'mon, you guys know what I'm talking about. There's a really positive vibe about Gemato's. I think it's a little family-owned place. They have this tiny little TV hanging off the wall, almost always tuned to ESPN. The decor is all like goofy garage sale stuff, not some shopper-bot crap like TGIF or something. The place is full of worker bees at lunch time. It's a great place to eat your BBQ, read your book, and have a great lunch or dinner.

I absolutely love Gemato's.  I'll admit it, I've only eaten the ribs here, but that's only because my mouth starts watering for them the second I see the restaurant.  They are so good, so tasty, a slight pull from the bone and then. . . mmm.  The BBQ sauce is easily the best I've had, sweet with just a perfect twangy spice...  The place itself is as unpretentious as you can get, and the staff has always been friendly.

    Well, well worth the drive.

This place has great BBQ!  If I died of a heartattack because of the place, I would be okay with that because then I died with a satisfied palatte and a full stomach.  Looks like I have been missing out on the Gyros.  Well, guess what I am having for lunch tomorrow.

Since writing this review, I have been hankering for some Gemato's Gyros and I finally had it for lunch today and just yum.  It was very good, I like their cucumber sauce too.  It was just greasy enough to know that I shouldn't be eating this everyday (but I could) and it just hit the spot.  You know what spot I'm talking about.  And I'm spent, later.
