UPDATE: Â
I wrote my original review (below) yesterday. Â Apparently, just writing about it made me excited to come back, so I did. Â My boyfriend and I went there at about 8pm on Valentines day, and somehow there was ONE table open. Â We obviously took it. Â Not only was our meal amazing, but our server, Ana, was legitimately AWESOME. Â Kyle was really fantastic too. Â I had the grilled cheese and tomato red pepper soup. Â DELICIOUS. Â My boyfriend had the salmon. Â ALSO DELICIOUS. Â We split an order of the fried calamari, and not only was it delectable, but one of the three sauces it is served with is orange marmalade. Â I would NEVER think that the two would pair so well, but it was out of this fracking world. Â I will be making this a regular spot. Â You should do the same. Â And, when you do, you should cross your fingers that you get Ana as your server, because she will make your night. Â Guaranteed. Â George Street Pub, I'll see you soon.
(Original Review) Â I've only been here once, so it won't be until I return that I can give 5 stars, but I had a great experience at GSP. Â I went with a friend for dinner simply because its about 2 blocks from my office and I needed to eat ASAP (not to mention that after work, I generally try and get a cocktail in my hand within ten minutes - my job is not fun). Â I had the GSP burger and it was uh.maze.ing. Â I am not going to pretend that I even got through half of it, because it was HUGE, but it was legitimately one of the best burgers I've had. Â Service was quick, and our bartender was very friendly. Â In unrelated news, she also had an awesome necklace on. Â All in all, I had a good time and it didn't empty my wallet. Â I will definitely be returning.
Hey bar manager or whoever you are with the poor customer service skills and bad memory. Â Don't YELL at the customers as they are being seated, telling them they can't sit unless their names are on the list. Â And when the customer says we did put our name on the list, don't yell back with attitude, NOT WITH ME, when in actuality it was with you. Â And when you realize what an a-hole you just were, at least apologize for it. Â Also, NEVER yank the back of a woman's coat aggressively. Â If you need to ask or see something, you can just politely tap her on her shoulder.
Review Source:So bummed! Â I live in the neighborhood and love the food and drink selection, so I decided to host a birthday party here. Â Sent an email and ended up making a reservation with one of the owners over the phone. Â When I showed up at our reservation time (with 15 friends in tow) there were NO tables available. Â We waited about 5 minutes until one opened up and then waited until an hour after our reservation time everyone was finally seated. Â The owner who was there and the wait staff all knew about the reservation...just chose not to honor it? Â I'm sure I'll be back because of the location but beware when making "reservations" for a party!
Review Source:This is my go-to local bar. Â Definitely a step above most bars food-wise (try the walleye or the crispy chicken bacon ranch sandwich) and it has above average beer selection (rotating beer specials are also good here too). Â Comfortable atmosphere is good for large, loud groups or a low key date night.
Only reason I didn't give it five stars is that there is a waiter there with a consistently piss poor attitude (the rest of the staff is great) and there are a few things on the menu that are just average. Â Those two grievances aside, everything else at this joint hits the mark. Â
Oh and tucked away patio is still a nice hidden gem b/c you can't spot it from Halsted.
If I had checked in every time I came here after work, I would have achieved regular status by now.
GSP has a comfortable and cozy atmosphere. Â It's not a dive bar by any means. Â Pick your spot - whether it is bellying up to the bar or settling in at a high table or booth.
My friends and I love this place because of the food and drink selection, not to mention great service. Â Menu favorites include the hand-dipped chicken strips, pub chips with blue cheese dip, and the hummus plate.
Conveniently located close to my job, you KNOW that I will definitely be back!
Meh.
One of those places that's better than some, but just not nearly as good as it could be if the staff actually gave a shit.
Was there for a Bears game which might have been part of the issue. Way too many jacked-up brah's celebrating "SUNDAY FUNDAY" and wallowing in the pathetic coolness they're convinced they inhabit. Just imagine the sound of your overweight Dad yelling at the tv when a professional athlete makes a split second error that your Dad couldn't have done successfully in a million years, and times it by 100. Oh, and which is lamer, the dude who wear Bears jersey's, or their girlfriends? Maybe it's the table of dudes with the "Sunday Funday" homemade T's...
Service was decent. Nothing over the top. Attentive, fast, but not really doing anything special to make the visit memorable. I guess that's what you get at a "sports bar," "gastropub," or whatever the fuck terms people make up to categorize midwestern food done with a tad bit of flair.
GSP burger was decent. Cooked properly, but, I mean, don't charge me $11 bucks for a greasy bun and a dish that took literally no creativity to conceive of.
Bacon Bloody was way to acidic, and I don't know the term, gimmicky?
Meh.
If I had all the time in the world and money to spend, I would probably hang out here on a daily basis like those How I Met Your Mother peeps. GSP has that casual, welcoming feeling that all those TV shows project but you didn't think was possible in real life.
Favorites include: Stiegl Radler grapefruit beer, burgers, garlic-y hummus, half-price wine Mondays, omelets with fantastic breakfast potatoes, pesto bruschetta, Bloody Marys with candied bacon.. it goes on and on, much like the storyline of HIMYM (Sidebar: am I the only one that's getting increasingly impatient with that show??)
Bonus: one time I came here craving loaded french fries like no other, but it wasn't on the menu. We asked our server to check if the kitchen would be willing to make it an appetizer for our group and they happily obliged. They went all out for us! Please imagine waffle fries (because French fries are for wimps!) with cheese, bacon, onion, sour cream... Service has always been outstanding here. GSP, you guys kick ass.
I used to live right around the corner so I went all the time but since I moved I have not been as much, but the other week I went back with my friend after raving about it and I truly forgot how much I loved GSP. I got the fish and chips which was super yummy. It was really fresh and they were nice large pieces of fish that were the right amount of soft and crunchy. Also you cant beat the waffle fries. The food is really good, although I miss the shrimp cargo on the menu, I had dreams about that dish before.
The servers are always really nice, last time I went I had a shorter server with red hair, she was really helpful with trying out new beers and attentive to our table even though it was pretty busy. I serve too so I am always more critical but she was really relaxed and fun. I always enjoy my time at GSP.
Big Fan. I've been close to a dozen times now. What I really like- they make everything themselves- make their own batter for fried foods, ranch, blue cheese, hummus, bloody mary mix. I like that it is homemade, not just from a jar from Sysco.
I get:
Triple Karmeliet
chicken tenders, or the pecan crusted ones
crispy chicken bacon sandwich
potato chips with blue cheese sauce
mussels
Plenty of other stuff is good too. Owners are friendly. Big windows let light and air in, so you feel less guilty about spending all day at the bar.
I have been here twice. Â Once, I would give it a 4 and the other a 2. Â Thus my average of 3...which I think is generous. Â I will say that both times I frequented George Street Pub, it was on a very busy day/night. Â
The first was after a neighborhood festival and the place was PACKED. Â Our friends insisted that we try it. Â They live in the neighborhood and it's a regular spot for them. Despite the business in the area, we had good service and the food was pretty typical standard barfare. Â But good. Â I had the hummus, which was fine and the portion good-sized. Â Everyone seemed pleased with their burgers/sandwiches.
The second time we came was for a large group event. Â The organizer had made arrangements with the bar to host us and pre-ordered some appetizers. Â Granted, there were a large number of us...but the service (or I should say attitude of the service staff) was salty at best. Â The outdoor patio is wonderful and several patrons had brought their animals inside. Â When one of our guests arrived with her dog, the manager stated that there were too many dogs on the patio and it may be best to come back after one had left. It wasn't a huge deal but it seems odd to have a "First dog comes, first served" policy. Â They also were somewhat rude to one of our guests who was trying to order a drink that they were not familiar with. Â
Finally, I asked if they had a similar brew to the one I was enjoying that I could try and when they said they had the perfect drink for me, I was excited. Â I was a little surprised when I got the check and the price tag of said beer was over double what I had been drinking. Â As a non-amateur, I should have known to ask...but as a former server, I know that when making a SERIOUS upsell at a casual place...it's best to inform the customer in advance as a courtesy. Â I've had several others relay similar experiences about it.
I'd go back if I was close and it was an only option. Â Or if someone invited me to get a drink there. Â But I wouldn't seek it out. Â And I'll definitely ask about all prices in advance.
What a find! Its a Quasi Baltimore Ravens bar! If you're Wacko for Flacco and are the "Ray Lewis of your Lacrosse team," this is your spot! I am already planning my return!
GSP is spot on with food, service, beer selection, price, tv ratio AND a killer patio scene! Its right in my neighborhood and I have a feeling this is a bar "where everyone knows your name."
I had the $10 George Street Pub Salad. Delicious! I've actually never had a salad quite like it. The generous portion of greens and grilled chicken was lightly topped with pecans and a honey glaze with a yogurt vinaigrette on the side. The charred taste paired with a semi-sweet and sour dressing and nuts was yummy and very unique. The rest of the food orders were spot on. My two friends both ordered the pecan encrusted chicken fingers. They are definitely more battered and fried than pecan-crusted, but there was still a nutty sweet flavor and pecans present. My friend's steak sandwich was not overwhelming, but looked fantastic. Perfect for girls who like red meat. The waffle fries were very tasty.
I haven't tried any of the Seafood dishes, but given GSP's clear ties to Baltimore and what I heard was a Maryland-based seafood distributor, I bet its better than average for Chicago. I guarantee if 20+ Marylanders gather anywhere, the Seafood has to be good.
$4 Allagashes were much appreciated and I can't wait to come back for list of 15 fall ales coming soon.
As longs as you're not a Steelers Fan, see you Sunday.
Good place with decent food and drink selections. I had the humus appetizer and it was really good - the pita was still hot, which made it better than the average humus and pita served cold at other bar. Both the beer and wine special pleased everyone in our group.
We sat outside to avoid the loud music. Since it was a tuesday night, it wasn't crowded,, so perfect for us since we had about 15 people. The patio was definitely a gem - comfy, chilled, and welcoming. We stayed for a while to enjoy the nice weather and each other company. They have tons of space inside and outside, and would definitely serve a group well.
Great service, great atmosphere, great beer variety.
Went last Thursday for the first time...I don't remember our server's name. Â Short, cute brunette, short hair. Â She made some great, honest recommendations and was very attentive. Â Never had to wait for drinks, checked on us frequently...great little spot. Â
I'll be back!
A-OK is the perfect description for this place! Â I stopped in one night to catch a game on TV and to grab a beer with friends.
Plenty of room at the bar right in front of the TV. Â Score! Â It was a nice night so the windows were open to the street which is always a plus for me.But the best place to sit is out on the back patio . . .too bad my friends were set on sitting at the bar as it looked great out there!
While the night started off slow with the bartender busy with friends at the other end of the bar, once he figured out that we were there for the long haul- he was much more attentive- even giving us a "heads up" that one of the patrons was leaving so we could grab a stool for my friend who had been left standing.
The evening for me ended when one in our group started to order up rounds of shots . . .first tequila, then Jameson . .then, well who knows what, as this smart girl had to work the next day so she left with a smile on her face!
We didn't eat but the people next to us did and their food looked pretty good. Â Will definitely have to try it on the next go around. Â Street parking was surprisingly easy as well.
Probably not a destination bar for me, but if you are in the neighborhood it is a solid choice.
This is a fine place for a pint.
I only stopped in for a drink, so I can't comment on the food. Â What I can speak on though, is the great beer selection and friendly staff. Â
It was hot and humid when we stopped in for a refreshment. Â Besides one big floor fan, this place was sweltering inside. Â The staff all seemed to be feeling the heat, and yet, every single one of them smiled as we walked by. Â They all seemed genuinely happy to be there. Â Props to people who can hold a positive attitude and smile, even when its hot out!
The patio is really nice, and a great place to sit with friends for a few beverages. Â
I would certainly return to try the food and a few of the cocktails if I find myself in the neighborhood.
I have been to GSP a few times since it opened last year and I want to love it, but for some reason I just can't! Â It is down the street from my apt so I want it to become my neighborhood bar and there aren't a whole lot of gastropub/ upscale bars in the area so I like that about it. Â
They have a great patio, good food, and great drinks! Â Their selection of beer is incredible. Â I also love the pub chips and blue cheese dip, burgers are good too. Â
I think the reason I can't fall in love with this place and only gave it 3 stars is the atmosphere. Â It is just lacking any character whatsoever. Â The bar itself is too new and boring looking and just needs so character. I feel like it just needs a little makeover and spruce up the bar & I will start to frequent it more often.
This is my new neighborhood bar, and I love it to pieces. Â
BF and I first started going there last year shortly after they opened, and we've been faithful customers ever since. Â Their beer selection is quite good and reasonably priced - gotta love Fat Tire, Breckenridge Vanilla Porter and some more exotic IPAs and whatnot for the BF - and their food is also pretty darn good. Â I'd recommend the pub chips and blue cheese dip - I think they might make the chips in-house, and they're delicious! Â The lobster roll is also very good (comes with waffle fries, mmmm) and so is their grilled cheese and tomato soup (ask for it on multigrain - you won't be sorry!) I hear from my more health-conscious friends that the salads are also very tasty. Â If you're into the brunch scenes on the weekends, they have a solid, no frills selection, and their Bloody Marys and mimosas are excellent and reasonably priced.
oh GSP, I can't wait til the schizophrenic Chicago weather quiets down and we can visit your awesome patio on a regular basis again :)
I came here on a friday night with a friend for a brew and some food. I appreciate that they had a Lagunitas special on a weekend night. We ordered the mussels and the wings. Both dishes were pretty good, though the serving size of the wings could have been a bit bigger. Service was slow. They were also out of several beers on the menu. Given that the menu is a piece of paper printed off a computer, I would expect the bar to provide a current list to patrons.
Review Source:GSP is awesome!!! A small group of us came for brunch yesterday all very hungover and in need of some grub. Â We all of course started with the bacon bloody Mary. Â OMG that candied bacon was out of this world. Â Bloody Mary was so-so. Â None of us could decide what to order because the entire menu looked amazing. Â I had the GSP burger with waffle fries. Â Basically a large burger stuffed with bacon, onions and chorizo topped with cheese. Â Three others got the crispy chicken, bacon and ranch sandwich, another the ham and cheese sandwich and another had the chicken tenders. Â No complaints, everyone loved their food. Â We got the bill and a couple of people took off but the rest of us wanted to drink some more...
We loved GSP so much that we stayed until 10pm at night. Â We went through just about every beer on the menu, car bombs, lunch boxes, Washington apple shots, goldschlagger shots, etc. Â We were feeling good... I joked that I was going to enjoy both brunch and dinner that and guess what, we ended up ordered spinach and artichoke dip and a plate of fries to hold us over from all the boozing. Â The server Chris was so fun and we chatted with him the whole time.
We got our bill and went on the <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Frestaurant.com&s=c5fe485af4df376130bee54f875814d79c4d7913e1258123b1206d2bdbf4873b" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://restaurant.com</a> app on my iphone and purchased the $100 gift certificate coupon for $12 with a coupon code... what a deal. Â Bill was pretty high but we definitely drank enough.
Can't wait to go back!
Oh, I dunno. 2.5? I'll round up. I've been here twice and am not itching to go back, but think it's decent  for the neighborhood it's in. First visit was Halloween ( I know, right?), where I had a great time, decent food (some hits: bacon-wrapped chicken sammie, some misses: soggy chips with bleu cheese), strong beer list, and exceptional service (hey, free shots!). Last night a group of us descended on the patio for dinner and beers, and found absent service (same waitress as last time, so....), a not so great hamburger, and the bottoms of our beer glasses.
I love their waffle fries, but I didn't love the fact that they were not warm. Didn't love the char burger either. Why bother putting pink hard tomatoes on anything? The burger was cooked past my med rare request, but not so far that I'd be willing to send it back.. The french rolls they use for the po' boys are great, but the shrimp was unimpressive. Despite all this, still 3 stars. Why? I don't *love* the neighborhood, but I think this is a far better hang out then the myriad of pseudo-Irish bars in that area if you need a drink. And a patio.
Come for the HUGE patio, the triple karmeliet, and waffle fries (which may or may not be warm)!
I want to love this place but after my second visit can only give it a 3.5. Really nice beer menu, but on both visits I've had to resort to my 2nd or 3rd choice because my first picks were "out." This was even after clearing the list with our server to confirm the beers I was honing in on were available. Ugh.
Food is decent -bacon wrapped chicken sandwich was far superior to the forgettable GSP salad- and service was a little dicey. Cute outdoor back patio and open windows in the front, so it's a nice spot when the weather's agreeable (but not worth going out of your way).
I live about a block away from GSP and find myself here on a regular basis so it's only fair that I show this place some love.
It's a fun mix of sports bar, late night drink spot, and some really good food (not your typical bar food, but some REALLY good food that in most places would cost twice as much).
The staff is always friendly and welcoming and in the summer they have a large outside patio. Thumbs up GSP!
Had dinner on Saturday night before heading out for the evening. Â Just split a few small plates (mini-burgers and chicken fingers) with the BF. Â The rest of the menu looked great, I'd like to go back earlier in the evening for a more relaxed, less crowded meal.
Looks like a great neighborhood place, I'll be back to sample other yummies!
A friend and I decided on GSB because we had a deal from <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Frestaurant.com&s=c5fe485af4df376130bee54f875814d79c4d7913e1258123b1206d2bdbf4873b" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://restaurant.com</a> and they had a lot of variety on the menu.
We get there and its a cool bar that is rather loud, but no people loud, music loud. For it to be the middle of the week, we were surprised because we had to yell to have our girl's night out.
Soo fast forward, the waiter was fabulous and new, but we figured she could make some solid recommendations. Ordered the calamari - not so great, it was like fish sticks. My friend had the walley and I had the salmon. I don't believe she was that thrilled, and the sauce on my salmon made it more tasty then it should have been.
Maybe.. just maybe, I should stick to chicken, fries, and dips.. People usually can hit those dead on.
On the flip side, I'd go back for drinks because the beer menu is expansive AND they have fab specials on Absolut if you like that. Would I go out of my way to go back, probably not.
Nice place, great service, good food, fantastic beer selection.
I had a great time at the George Street Pub celebrating a friend's birthday last night. Â The food was tasty, and the menu had a great selection. Â The staff offered my plates, etc to serve up cupcakes I had brought. Â It was nice that they offered - instead of me needing to ask. Â The entire staff was great - we had a large group (about 15) and they went above and beyond for us. Â We never had to hunt someone down to order a beer, and when people wanted to share food items they split it in half and put it on 2 plates for them. Â Sometimes it is the little things that count.
There is also a large patio in the back - I wish I had known about it before it got so cold.
This place is definitely a Pub - as in, nicer than a bar. Would love to go back.
Updated my review from the first time (which was only a few weeks after they opened).
Clearly, they got it down pat this time.
Their beer menu expanded. It got better and they slapped on the prices, too(Which I may add are awesome)! I've never seen such good beers for such good prices. Seriously. They had about 2 pages, plus a "new" beer list, or maybe seasonal. Any way, it was much improved.
The service was attentive and it was hoppin inside.
This time, I got the GSP salad with chicken, apples, grapes, mandarin oranges and walnuts with a strawberry yogurt dressing--that tasted exactly like yogurt. I forgot to ask for no oranges, because as I suspected, it made the lettuce hella wet. Note--you should do the same, and the salad will be perfect.
Alright, you hooked me, GSP. I will come back again. Danke.
A random Yelp search led me to this place (thanks!)
Great beer selection, very helpful staff. I felt as though our waitress went out of her way to make sure we enjoyed each of our beer selections. My favorite of the evening was the banana nut bread beer. Not nearly as sweet as it sounds, but beer purists might not want to touch it.
The atmosphere: Mixed age group, high energy, a little loud, but not crazy
I plan to go back and try the food because it smelled great!
I discovered a new favorite beer here: Midas Touch by Dogfish Head. It's $6 per glass, but it's 9% and reminds me of grape lollipops! I feel great after two. They have a pretty good selection of craft beers in general.
I didn't get any food, but I tried my friends' dishes, including the jambalaya, the chips and blue cheese fondue, and the burger that has chorizo and grilled onions INSIDE of it, and everything was pretty yummy.
I would definitely go back some time.
The food, decor, and staff made the perfect combination of a fantastic experience. Â I highly suggest you try the muscles!!! Â I don't think I have ever dipped bread into anything- and I was borderline drinking the leftover broth from the bowl. Â They have seafood on the menu- TONS of seafood! Â I am from New England, so this is a HUGE bonus for me. Â
The owner (Ali) was friendly and helpful, funny and cool. Â He was very straightforward and prided himself in his work. Â We enjoyed talking to him, very much. Â He let us know that come college football season, he would be happy to put on any game we would like- on any of their 8 flat-screen TVs. Â This is GREAT news, as both of us are huge fans. Â He also mentioned how great his chef is (we agree) and will regularly play with recipes to make the perfect dish.
We were comfortable and entertained. Â I hope to make this a regular spot for us to visit.
Hmmm - I struggle on the exact star rating to give GSP, mostly because I've been twice and liked it both times, but the food was just meh.
As far as bars go, I really like this place. Â It has an incredible beer menu, but it promises to change the menu on a weekly basis and I've yet to see that happen. Â Both times I've gone (granted, within 2 weeks of each other, so that must be worth something!) the menu has been dated as June 2-9. Â Yet, I went on June 14th and on the 24th and the menu was the same. Â when I ordered a beer from the list the waitress said they were out of it and pointed to the expired date on the menu.
My thought is this - either don't promise to change a menu weekly (especially so blatantly as to print it on the top!) or provide up to date menus. Â Seems simple. Â I shouldn't have to guess what is actually available. Â Don't tempt me with a tasty description only to say "better luck next time".
Onto the food. Â Oh, right, "meh". Â I got the Shrimp Cargo everyone has been raving about and thought that I've had better shrimp on airplanes. Â I wish I was kidding. Â The dish is so packed with butter, garlic, and some cheese concoction that you almost miss the shrimp. Â But, once you get one, prepare to be underwhelmed.
However, the Jumbalaya well made up for what the cargo was lacking. Â Surprisingly, the shrimp in this dish didn't upset me at all. Â The flavors were well developed, and the cornbread at the bottom was delish. Â My only gripe was that they didn't serve extra cornbread on the side to sop up all the extra sauce.
A recommended food item: the chips with bleu cheese sauce. Â However, the past two times we've ordered it, we've replace the chips with their waffle fries. Â Those things are amazing. Â And they pick up the sauce nicely. Â They should put that on the menu...
All in, it's worth a try and I know I'll be back. Â Probably not for the food, but definitely for the beer and the ambiance (Did I mention the women's rest room is clean and nicely deocrated? Â Just ignore the fact you get hit in the butt with the door while washing your hands...). I just hope they get a few of the kinks worked out!
Why Thank you Jenise R,
Shrimp Cargo on a date is for people WILDLY IN LOVE!!
THE GARLIC LINGERS IN THE BEST WAY!
Honestly feel like driving there now.
It's small but a perfect sized appetizer.
They have a great beer selection and the service was great.
I did notice they have a BIG outside patio that they do allow your dogs!
AMAZE!
