I don't know why people complain so much. Listen up snob. Walk up to the register and say "slice of sausage". Give the lady the $2.85 for the slice. It'll be ready in about 3 minutes. Put some red pepper flakes and maybe oregano on it. Enjoy. Then hop on the Red Line to wherever you need to be.

It's a hole in the wall pizza joint. What are you expecting? This is Uptown.

best thin slice/nyc style pizza on the northside of chicago and possibly in the whole city. Get the sausage, its their special recipe. Also, you have to get a slice of pizza or a large, if you get the smaller pizzas it doesnt taste right. It looks a luttle shoddy from the outside and inside but thats what you have to deal with to get some good thin crust in chicago.

As someone from the east coast: If you're looking for NYC-style pizza, this is it. Thin crust (NOT crunchy!), greasy, cheese everywhere, foldable, awesome. The prices are right, too. Very low.

As someone who used to live in uptown, though: I can tell you that its location is pretty sketch. It's not Englewood or anything, but you don't really want to be there after dark. Service at the place reflects the neighborhood they have to deal with.

So, if you've got the itch for real NY pizza without that real pre-Giuliani NY 'hood feel, get delivery. They've arrived about when they said they would (or before) every time I've ordered and the delivery people are pleasant.

Customer Service, Customer Service, Customer Service. If you're looking for pizza joint to have it "THIS AIN'T IT!" The pizza is still good enough to satisfy a craving but I don't frequent the place like I use to. I walked in and there were a few people behind the counter. They looked up, saw me and didn't greet me then I spoke and no one said a word. I went ahead and ordered 2 slices of sausage and a drink anyway. I stood there for a moment and finally had to ask the cashier how much it was. She was holding her hand out for money, but she never told me how much the order cost. I gave her a $20 and as she handed me back my change I asked her again how much it was and this time she told me with an attitude and rolled her eyes. I explained to her that I misunderstood her before. Anyway, now I'm aggravated and ready to just get the hell out of there. The guy walks up, shoves my bag onto the counter, no thank you, and I just take it and walk out. Now for me, this is the type of service that puts a bad taste in my mouth and I just wanna CUSS everybody out. But, I maintained and just told myself to never give into another craving and to look for another thin sliced pizza joint that's the bomb in my neighborhood. The infamous UPTOWN.

Sketchy yes.  Shitty atmosphere yes.  Good service? Not really, but who cares bc the pizza is cheap and as good as it gets if you are looking for authentic NY style pizza in the windy city!  An uptown gem I tell ya!  PS. The fries are fresh cut and surprisingly good too! Pizza Pizza!

Don't bother. Hung up on when put on hold trying to order. Said 30 minutes, it took an hour and 30 minutes. Sent the wrong soda. Pizza was cold.

Gigios has been in uptown forever . It's a greasy ass little whole in the wall. O have been eating Gigios since I had teeth. The pizza is good and greasy and great for a quick fix! I recommend just going in and getting a slice. The two star rating is for their customer service and delivery. It simply sucks. It took 5 min and several repeated answers on my part, just for the girl on the phone to understand my order......( large sausage)...I am a patient person, but after repeating my phone number and my credit card way too many times, I realized my order would be messed up, so I canceled it. This is not my first negative experience with Gigios, there have been several. One time the delivery driver, tried to make a duplicate copy of my credit card!! My advice is just get a slice to go, but if you must use the delivery use cash!!

Amazingly HOT, cheesy and delicious.  Beautifully textured crust (could use more salt), loaded fresh toppings, great sauce.  Great price and 22 min to get to my door.  Free soda with my large, fyi.

They made a pregnant lady wait an hour an a half for a pizza promised to be 45 minutes.

Also, it was lukewarm and mediocre.

But the first sentence should be enough to make you call someone else if you have a craving for cheap, greasy pizza.

I use to live in Brooklyn but born & raised in Chicago.  This pizza is excellent!  Get a slice and it's very filling!  The service here is terrible and rude but who cares, I just want a slice!  You also might want to stay away from the area late at night too.

Hole in the wall kind of place in a rough hood with frequent homeless people hanging around. I have been eating here for over 20 years. It was much better back then when the old man was alive.

Nowadays the pizza is still pretty good. the closest you can get for a NY style thin crust. Reasonably price and excellent thin crusts. Cheese and sauce are great.

If you don't mind the neighborhood.... great thin crust pizza to go. Ask for well done, IMO they taste better.

Aesthetically this place is as nearly tragic looking from the outside as it is on the inside, it's pretty dire.  But we're not talking look and feel, we're talking pizza. And this place has got it in taste spades.

Gigio's is consistently mentioned in any number of 'authentic NY Slices in Chicago' and for good reason.  They are in the top two imo.  The other. Dante's in the Square.

    [x] Do it.

Great price for great pizza! the service is gritty and the interior a bit dirty; just how I like my pizza joints (especially if it's 2am and I'm wasted).

The first time I came here I just wanted a jumbo slice, but they don't take credit cards for purchases under 5 dollars... so I ordered the medium sized pizza for $9 and ate 6 slices! The crust is more chewy and the cheese more stringy than I prefer, however, I like it, friends I take there like it and you'll like it!

Not sure if i got this mixed up with the Gigio's in Evanston--which I have not been to--but I stopped in here on a Friday night hoping for some NY style pizza as noted in the reviews. First of all, the place is a shithole. I'm down with hole-in-the-wall places, but Gigio's was straight dirty. We ordered 4 slices and the man behind the counter had a lot of trouble handling this order for some reason. We had to talk through it several times before he got the order in correct and our order was still wrong when we got it.

As for the pizza; I think PapaJohn's is probably more New York than this. Was way too bready and despite the amount of cheese, it had zero flavor. The slices were small as well. Definitely not foldable. I have no clue why anyone would want to willingly eat here.

Jumbo slice with a free pop for $4.89. What a deal! They were nice enough to cut the slice for me so that I had one at night and the next for lunch the following day.

Delicious, fold up NYC style pizza. I've only ever had the sausage and have always been content with it.  Give it a try!

This place is like a bad relationship.  It may treat you like crap but you keep going back.  Why? Because it always keeps you guessing.  they may be rude on the phone or not, they may be rude in person when you pick it up or not, you maybe be waiting a while in the infernally hot yellowing restaurant or not...the pizza may be good or not...but like an unhealthy relationship you keep going back because when it's good, it's realllllly good.

We (my husband and I) have tried to leave Gigio's soooo many times but there's just not a better alternative for a thin crust, NY style pizza.

The pizza was nasty. I didn't like it. I don't know what else to say. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because it got to me fast at like 3am. I wouldn't order from them again.

Wait, that's not fair. I should list a valid reason.

The cheese. The problem was the cheese.

This is our go-to pizza joint.  Its another Uptown gem.  The pizza is very good, fast, and the staff is remarkably personable (and willing to chat if you go in).

The only other thing I have to say is .... cheese fries ..... you must get them.  Something about soft fried fries with "nacho" cheese sauce always hits the spot.

I love New York style pizza, so when I saw this place on Chicago's Best, I had to go!

I finally got my boyfriend to bring me all the way from Aurora to the northside of Chicago for this treat. Pulling up, the place looks like a dump (but I like dumps!) & not in the best part of the city (but, hey, I'm from Aurora so no need for snobbery..!). We get inside and order when a terrible thunderstorm hits. Just my luck, travel all the way to the northside from sunny Aurora, just to end up in a hailstorm w/ funnel clouds along the Lakefront....hmmm.

After we get our pizza, we decided to skip the tiny, dirty booths and head to a park along Lakeshore Drive to watch the storm roll in. My bf had sausage and pepperoni and I had plain cheese. It was good, but a little too cheesy for NY style.

I would come here again...but maybe to the one in Des Plaines instead. The best part was eating our pizza in our car and watching the lightning rattle the Lakefront. The worst part- the drive.

Oh well, maybe if we lived in the neighborhood...but thanks anyway Gigio's! :)

Their, uh, "dining room" is nowhere that you would want to have a first date...or even a monthly check-in with your parole officer.  However, the pizza is fantastic and that's all that matters.

This seems more dead-on New York style than their Evanston cousin, which I enjoyed regularly throughout the late 90s and early 00s, and more sporadically since.  This Gigio's serves you a greasy, cheesy slice with a nice, slight crisp on the outside of the crust from the second trip through the oven.  Sprinkle a little oregano, fold, and enjoy your bliss.

I am very obsessed with this place.

Even before tasting my slice of pizza, I immediately smelled the authenticity that this is indeed, NY style pizza.  Coming from NYC, I obviously love NY style but it's hard finding good ones here in Chicago.  The pizza took me back to my childhood when I would enjoy simple greasy slices of deliciousness.  The slice was instantly gobbled down.

An hour later (after we already went home), we came back and this time, didn't make the mistake of getting pizza by the slice but ordered the 14" pie for $8.  And for just only $8, it's indeed cheap eats.

One thing to note, the pizza by the slice was tastier than the pie...The crust on the slice was thinner and just tasted better so that was a bit odd.  The pie was still good but just not like the slice so I'm hoping that next time, my pie will be just like the slice.

This place is like straight out a NYC's skid row. Located off the Wilson Stop in a pretty grimmy part of uptown, you can not get as classic to the real city experience then this place. The place is a whole in the wall, very grundgy, but super cool. And the best thing about it is are the characters that work there, or are eating there. The dialouge coming out the place is ripe for a torentino movie or something.

So we went there to pick up a pizza, and had to wait, and in 5 minutes there, we basically had a plot to a movie!

The people working there were hilarious. You have the main manager who is this mildy retarded 500 pound Chicagoan dude, who is just bithching out his little old Italian delivery guy when we got in the door,  he was starting to get bothered by his constant peskering, "when is the pizza goanna be ready." In his Italian style, he starting yelling at this guy, he was like "GO take a walk, a jog, get out of my face., go take a walk around the counter.!" totally making a scene, for no reason, just to show that he was the boss.

They also had this quasi-homeless guy working there, helping take out garbage and stuff. This guy was wearing battle fatigues and looked like he climbed out of the trash bin few hours prior. He had a flashlight tucked into the back of his pants. and was going around to the garbages, taking them out putting his whole leg in the garbage to compress it for more space. He did this about 3-4 times to the two garbages inside the place (it was so damn weird and pointless), while we were there, and we were scratching our heads. These two friends sitting accross from us were like "Look at this motha-fu*ka , hey, you need to come over here and put your foot in this mothafuc*kas ass, pointing to his friend, the both of them were laughing. as were we. What was funny, was the guy had a flashlight tucked in by his belt. Like he was somekid of superhero or something.

So in this short 5 minutes we were there, there was so much happening, they were pretty busy.

We got the pizza, and it was delcious! and the experience of going there was so much fun. Oh yeah i forgot about the pizza! It was great! no complaints, best NYC pizza in Chi

You failed me fellow yelpers! My boyfriend insisted that we ordered from Gigio's today but I wanted to check the reviews before trying. Seeing that they got good reviews, I thought i'd give it a try.

I ordered for pickup since I don't live too far away, the woman on the phone was nice and quick. 20 minutes later I am on my way to pick up my pizza. I pull up right in front and take one look at the place and was already turned off. There were bums sitting in front of the place and some loud crying 20 year old guy being obnoxious. His friends were trying to tell him to keep it down but I think the whole neighborhood could hear him. I get inside and see the people who work there and here is the scenario that came to mind while they were making my pizza:

One guy sneezes and wipes his nose with his arm then grabs the cheese and throws it on. The next guy sticks his hand in his pants, scratches himself a little and throws a little sausage on the food. The third guy tilts his head down, wipes his dandruff onto the pizza and calls it parmasan cheese. (if anyone has seen Waiting, you would get the reference)

So i get the pizza and was surprise to be handed a liter of RC. (not my drink of choice but can't complain about anything free) Maybe I should have read the menu a little more to understand that when you order a certain size, you get a free RC. Cool beans.

Get it home, open it up and just see a big puddle of greese. Ew. I had to take MANY paper towels and pat off some of that greese. Even after doing that, i still had to wipe the dripping greese off my face. As for the taste of the pizza...it really wasn't anything special. Plain and just whatever. A lot of people like it, so I'm going to assume that I just got a bad pizza. I'll consider trying it again for the price but we shall see.

I have a shocking, shameful confession.  Though I've lived Chicagoland my entire life, the best pizza I've ever had has been in Boston and Staten Island.  Oh, I tried to deny it, but I knew the truth in my heart: I love East Coast style pizza.  So after reading the reviews of Gigio's saying that this was the best thin crust pizza people had had outside of New York I gleefully placed an order.  People, this isn't even the best thin crust pizza I've had in Chicago.

On this plus side, it's pretty reasonably priced and arrived well under the stated 45 minute delivery time.  And it's not bad, it's just by no means great.  There's something off in the spices that I can't put my finger on, but I don't like it.  It's also super cheesy and greasy, yet somehow still fairly bland and flavorless.

Not impressed.  My quest for New York style pizza in Chicago continues.  But my order did come with a free liter of RC.  I didn't even realize they still made RC.

If you have the option to pick up or have it delivered, definitely opt for delivery.  This was my first time ordering from this place and I went to pick it up--big mistake.  This place is in the freakin' hood!  There were quite a few unsavory characters lingering outside the place.  I don't think I have ever seen bars on a door of a pizza joint!

Anyway...whenever I try a new pizza place, my benchmarks are Cafe Luigi for thin crust and Gino's East for deep dish.  Gigio's is thin crust and it's good.   Greasy, hell yes.  After trying Gigio's I think Cafe Luigi is still the best.  I like the chewiness of Luigi's crust and their sauce has more flavor.  I wanted to salt Gigio's pizza and there was a stronger oregano flavor to it vs. Cafe Luigi.  Gigio's mozzarella sticks are really good, too.    Must be the seasoning in the breading.  And how old school is this...I got a free liter of RC with my order!  I haven't had RC since 8th grade.  Love it!  I will definitely order from here again...but delivery!!  I don't like taking my own life in my hands to go pick up a stupid pizza.

Being from St. Louis, I'm fond of a thin slice of pizza.  That doesn't mean I don't enjoy a good deep dish, but thin is what I grew up eating and frankly, it's hard to find a good thin slice in this wonderful town.

Thank GOD I work near this place, because I'm certain they wouldn't deliver to the Ukrainian Village.  My co-workers and boss get Gigio's every once in awhile and I damn near jump up and down when I see it.  It's big, sloppy pizza and it's delicious.  I can't figure out WHY it's so great, though. Finally!  I don't have to go to Santullo's and deal with less-than-enthused stoned hipster bike-riding employees!

Disclaimer: I have never been inside!

My date bought pizza from here (takeout). And it was goooooooooood.
For a minute (and just a minute) I was at a storefront pizzaria in Manhattan, sunny early summer... sigh... Then he told me where he got it.
I choked, coughed, and maybe there was an unladylike gag or two...
I mean, I am adventurous, I like to eat, but Uptown can be scary. Wha? That's why you got takeout? Because you were afraid of getting shot? Oh, You were afraid I was going to get shot. Makes logical, perfect sense. I too want mozzarella with no bullet casings. My shoes only give me so many super-powers- Matrix-ing away from a bullet? Nope. Not even for pizza.
So Yelpsters, Don't go: Call in, have it delivered and watch a movie with your date- good pizza- especially if you want a break from the sodden mess they call Chicago deep-dish, right?

The bad news (for wife and I ) is that it is on the way to our daughters school. The good news is that the pizza if freaking delicious. My wife can eat pizza in her sleep,, it seems like. It is so hard not to stop in there for a slice at least once or twice a week. Thank goodness we both hit the gym a few times a week. If you are reading this ... stop, get up , and go get a slice! I can tell you one thing though, you will be hooked.

This place gets accolades from my pizza-eating friends so I'm writing a review. My former coworker from New York said it was the closest thing to NY style he has found in the city. One time we stopped there in the company car so he could get some lunch to go, and the smell when I was driving back...omg did it smell good. He ordered garlic on his pizza. It was a rainy, cold day and the cheese and garlic and breadiness smell...I just reveled in it.

So you know how I try to be a vegan? I've been thinking about Gigios pizza since that day when he ordered it, probably about 5 months ago. I don't think about it everyday, but frequently, maybe once a week?

Today I was in the neighborhood with one of my favorite people in the world. I swear I didn't even look at the place, and he said something like, "oooh, pizza place." After running our errands, and several diversionary tactics to preserve my vegan-ness, including trying to walk a different route back to the car that didn't pass the pizza place, his desire prevailed and I ended up in there. He somehow knew what I was going through and said, "I'll order cheese" (rather than his usual sausage). I more than willingly took a few bites of the pizza. He was so excited to eat the slice he almost burned his mouth. I watched him rapidly shift the bite in his mouth so he wouldn't get burned. This is the power of Gigio's pizza, some people risk injury in all of the excitement.

The restaurant is pretty dirty but really I didn't care. The crust quality makes up for the appearance. If I were to suggest any improvement maybe a sweeter sauce but I am old enough to know I have strange taste, so 5 stars, for at least meeting high expectations.

Do you like cheese? I like cheese. I mean I REALLY like cheese. Especially melty cheese. If I could only eat cheese the rest of my life I'd be perfectly ok with that.

I decided to pretend I wasn't on a diet and order a pizza from someplace I haven't tried before. Thanks to Yelp I settled on Gigio's. I ordered half cheese and half mushroom and onion.

My pizza arrived promptly and when the delivery guy handed me the box I was pretty sure they screwed up my order. There is no way that a small pizza could be this heavy. It felt like there was a rock in there and I figured they must have given me stuffed on accident. When I opened it I realized that the order was in fact correct. They just put about 2 lbs of cheese on it. OH HOLY HEAVEN, GIVE MAMA THE CHEESE!

I sat down and enjoyed my cheesy goodness. The crisp on the bottom, chewy on top crust was good too but who cares about the crust when we have all this glorious cheese!

Yeah I'd order from them again...

    and again...

    and again...

...but next time I'd skip the toppings because the flavor of the cheese comes out much more when there is nothing distracting you from it.

I ordered. I waited. It arrived hot. I ate almost the entire thing. My life was complete.

Ok, so it was Sunday night and of course I hate to grocery shop (or cook, but that is another story), and again I was perplexed on what to order. I searched Yelp (of course, duh) and found Gigio's. Rave reviews. Pizza. Perfect.

I put in my little order, and it arrived about 45 minutes later. (under the quoted time, apparently lots of peeps crave pizza on boring Sunday nights).

And I opened the box to a beautiful pie. A Gigio's special topped with mushrooms, sliced tomatoes, sausage and green peppers. Lovely. Just lovely...just what I needed to cap off the weekend and serve as my final bout of calorie-laden, carb-infested food. Definitely could've used a bit more cheese (of course, this is true even when a pizza is PILED with cheese, so hey), and a little more sauce (not much on there), but overall a grade A pizza pie that made me smile.

The icing on this already stellar cake. A huge, cold bottle of Diet Rite Zero. The evening: a complete and utter success.

    Highly recommended.

Gigio's is my favorite thin crust pizza in Chicago by far. The crust is thin and crispy yet still floppy. They load on the toppings. I think the sauce is one of the best I've tried, and I eat a lot of pizza so I should know. I used to stop in there whenever I saw a show at the Aragon or Riviera nearby, and now I live within their delivery area and we order from there at least once every two weeks.

Their pasta is also good. We tried their ravioli the last time we ordered from there just to try something different, and we were not disappointed. I look forward to trying more from their menu.

As someone said in a previous review. Their interior is a little dingy. I might not suggest you bring the family in for pie, but a slice is great and the delivery is pretty quick and always good.

I haven't been there for a few years but have been going there for decades , since before they moved a few doors over. I see the neighborhood is much improved but when I would go here it was iffy at best , so the pizza better be damned good. It is my favorite pizza in the Chicago area , the best tasting sausage specifically. The dining room (if you can call it that) is kinda scuzzy , so order out. If you are lucky enough to be in the area , they deliver. Otherwise , call ahead , have someone keep the car running , run in , get the pizza , and haul ass home and enjoy one of Chicago's finest.
    ........
Took the kid there for the first time in years , still skeevey , still my favorite pizza. I recall begging the guy taking orders to deliver to me while I was just outside the delivery area , and they came. Pizza worthy of begging folks , I cannot sing it's praises enough.

If i were possible to give some place infinity stars Gigio's would get them from me.

Gigio's is as close to crack (and possibly crack heads) as this nice girl from the UP can get.  I've been going here for about 6 years and have never had a bad experience....I think that's saying a lot considering the looks of the place- Its dirty, dingy, in a shitty neighborhood, and usually full of "undesirables" but i'm telling you- ITS TOTALLY WORTH IT

everything there is good- from a slice, to the mozzarella sticks (with the weirdest dipping sauce ever...but it works)

My old roomie amy and I used to get spinach, garlic, and pineapple and we did it with out any judgments for our admittedly odd taste. (she also loves gigio's- in fact when I texted her last tuesday to tell her I was there with my friend jason she called me a dirty whore...the nerve!)

to sum up- just go there - especially if you are a new yorker who misses real pizza.  It might not be certified organic or have a crappy brewery attached (you know who you are!!) - its just good pizza...the way it should be.
