Awesome food, cheap drinks, laid back environment and SHUFFLEBOARD.  What's not to love?  Kinda reminds me to the EAV Local for grown-ups.

My boyfriend and I stumbled across this place one night while trying to find a new bar to go to. I was impressed. This is a nice spot to chill and enjoy some drinks and good music  at.

$1 Mimosas for brunch. $3 well drinks Mon-Thurs. Trivia on Wednesday. I loved coming here until I ordered the chicken wings and ended up with terrible food poisoning. Maybe I'll be back STRICTLY for the drinks... After all Tomatillos is right across the street!

What a great little bar.  We stopped in before a show at the Earl and had a pasta dish special.  The food was great.  The service was great.   And the people at the bar seemed like a big happy family.  Fun place!!!

The Glenwood might be tolerable if it didn't allow smoking. I arrived on a Saturday at noon to find the restaurant completely devoid of any human life with the exception of a staff member who was blazing away in the back corner - apparently it was the cigarette of his life because he was so preoccupied that he didn't even notice we had entered. After several minutes of awkward indifference, my dining partner and I finally just walked out. After discovering that there weren't any viable alternatives in the near vicinity, we returned after about 10 minutes. In retrospect, we would have been better off evacuating the premises immediately.

Food: The Glenwood specializes in casual American bar fare. During my visit, we started off with the chicken nachos, which were large enough to end hunger in a third world country. I'm not complaining, just letting others know that this dish will easily feed a small tribe for days. To the kitchen's credit, they did use queso instead of melted shredded cheese, the former of which I prefer for nachos. For an entree, I opted for the chicken caprese sandwich, which was among the worst sandwiches I've ingested in recent memory - the meat was tough, the bun was too small to accommodate the ingredients, and the sandwich was drenched in balsamic vinegar to the point that it was virtually inedible.

Service: Friendly and efficient. If it wasn't for the high caliber of the service, this likely would have been a one star review.

Atmosphere: The air in this place is toxic and riddled with tobacco smoke. After sitting in the place for only an hour, I left smelling like an ash tray and wishing that I had left sooner - I feel sorry for the staff who have to work in that environment on a daily basis. The only real redeeming quality of this is place is their expansive outdoor patio, but alas, it's also littered with an ample supply of chain-smoking troglodytes.

Cost: Moderately priced. Appetizers are $4-$10, salads are $6-$8, sandwiches are $8-$12, burgers are $8-$9, and entrees are $12-$18. Brunch entrees are $7-$10.

Other: The Glenwood features daily food specials, as well as trivia on Wednesday evening (house prizes), brunch on Saturday and Sunday (11AM-4PM), and open mic night on Sunday evening (8PM-11:30PM). Parking is available on the surrounding side streets.

It's always a treat to find a bar where I can still smoke. That alone merits the 4 stars, but having an awesome staff makes this one my new favorite haunts.

I have been here three times since they reopened.  When I have sat at the bar, I have received good service.  The one time I sat at a high top, our service was spotty.

On my last visit, we ordered the chicken fingers the fried zucchini.  The chicken fingers were overcooked and dry and the fried zucchini was rather tasteless.

So, I stand by my earlier review.  I'll come for drinks, not the food.

What has happened to The Glenwood?  As EAV residents my partner and I ate here several times before they closed.  We were happy to see the restaurant reopen.  Tonight we returned to a basically a sports bar with TVs everywhere (including a flat screen in each booth).  We started off with an order of mussels which consisted of 6 in a velveta-like sauce with pita chips... it was passable.  I ordered the Pork Chops and my partner ordered the Rib Eye steak.  Both were served with mash potatoes and asparagus.  The pork was ok but I didn't think the two 4 ounce pieces were really worth the $16 price.  The steak was absolutely not a Rib Eye cut and I don't know how it had been cooked...  it was a sad, small piece of horribly gray meat with no grill marks or seasoning.  As we left the restaurant my partner commented, "I've had better steak at a hospital."

I've been told by several people that they've had good food since the reopening... maybe we ordered the wrong things or they were just having a bad night?  I just don't know that I would gamble another $60 to find out.

We had a great time at re-opened Glenwood.

The atmosphere is like the East Atlanta version of Cheers. Including a guy that kind of looks like Ted Danson.

As far as dinner, we started with the hummus and salsa.  The salsa is house-made and I could put it on just about anything.  For an entree, I highly recommend the Chicken Caprese Sanwich.  It's a grilled chicken breast topped with a slice of fresh mozzarella, a fried green tomato and a basil balsamic vinaigrette and it's served on the yummiest Italian style bun.  It's super fresh and delicious!!
Also, try the waffle fries they rival Chic-fil-A's.

After we had dinner we played Skee Ball until someone finally won a free beer.  Yes, you can win beer!

    Two thumbs up!

LOVED this place. Had the fried pickles to start, which they pair with ranch dressing, and man-o-man, that's good eats.

I was a little unprepared for this place, because initially, we walked into the bar area, but who knew there was a whole little quiet dining area attached? Not me.

The veggie lasagna was so tasty, and the service was everything you'd want. Casual, but cozy and great for summer evening dining with friends.

I have come here a couple times now. Both times I have gone they had live music. Jazz. and the guys playing were pretty fantastic.

BEER: they have an impressive selection of bottled beer and a typical draft selection. so huge kudos there.

THE FOOD. The chef here can make magic. Some fantastic food.

Overall this place has some great ambiance and I really like it. The only thing is don't come to early because it will be pretty dead. Unless you like that. Personally I like my pubs loud and packed. But if your coming for dinner I would suggest coming earlier so you can enjoy your food because it is sure to impress.

There is two different sections, the main bar (smoking allowed) and the dining area/ dance floor(?) ..(non smoking)

And its location is awesome. Right in the middle of so much to do. So while your walking through EAV make sure to stop in and get a beer. OH and they have a patio in the back!! HUGE KUDOS.

Come, wine and dine and enjoi.

QUICK TIP: They have a HUGE parking lot in the back. park there :)

This place is a total gem!  I had read a review of their pimento cheese appetizer and figured I'd give it a try.  It was close to 8 on a Friday night and the place was nearly empty (the normal rush is around 10 and they're open until 2am), so we got to choose where we wanted to sit.  The back patio was super chill- and our server was excellent.
Pimento cheese, fried pickles, jalepeno jelly & candied pecans?  AMAZING
    Buffalo chicken egg rolls?
AMAZING (especially since they were 50% off tonight!)
    Crab cake BLT?
Eh, but the wasabi tartar sauce added a nice kick- I'm just used to Maryland crab cakes- still good, though.

The music was great- totally 90's alt-rock- and the service was perfect.
Oh, and their beer list?  Easily as good as Granville Moore's (in DC) but half the price.
    Will definitely be back!

We ended up at the Glenwood today to watch the World Cup Finals match after finding the Midway much too crowded.

We were pleasantly surprised by a cozy atmosphere and a server who was eager to help us find comfortable seating in view of the screens. We ended up at the bar, with a comfortable view and a very hard working and pleasant bartender to help us out.

I can't speak more highly of the barkeeper - not only was he a cutie, but he was prompt, friendly, and moved incredibly fast to make sure everyone was well taken care of.

We received our food orders in record time, especially considering how busy the place was becoming. I ordered the bratwurst, which is locally made, with homemade sauerkraut and mustard on the side.  It was absolutely delicious and will definitely be ordered again should we return. My husband's bean burger, on the other hand, was not exciting and I don't think he enjoyed it very much.

The layout of the place is a bit awkward, but probably makes more sense if you're just hanging out with friends as opposed to trying to watch a football (soccer) game.

In general, I enjoyed myself and though I wouldn't go out of my way to go to the Glenwood, I wouldn't complain at all if I was in the area and needed a place to stop and have a drink or eat.

Methinks The Glenwood is trying to be something it's not. What it is? A bar that serves subpar food. What it's not?  A fine eatery worthy of its high priced entrees.

Apricot blah blah sweet potato vinaigrette blah blah Carpaccio - The name of this appetizer is too long.  And there was no discernable sweet potato flavor, with only the tiniest bit of apricot presence. But it was a yummy little dish.

Vegan pot pie = FAIL. Bland, bland, bland.  I mean, I know vegans are probably somewhat accustomed to eating bland, oddly textured food, but this was really underwhelming.

Crab Cake BLT - couldn't taste crab or bacon, so what did I taste? Essentially, nothing. The side salad with the pear vinaigrette was nice, though.

Jerk Wahoo - THIS was actually really good. You could really taste the truffle oil in the risotto.

Our server was peppy and bubbly, even after my friend sent back her vile pot pie. And he was pretty on top of the drink situation.

One thing I do really like about the place is the decor. It's a warm, comfortable place, and it's somewhat brightly lit, so it feels energetic.

    But overall - blah.

The Good:  This place has become our favorite spot on Friday night. We love bar food and this place has it!  They are also the only resto I know that serves the Turduckon burgers.  Though, I am not a burger fan, it was good. We had the Grilled Chicken & Feta salad with house-made herb-feta dressing.  Love it!!! I love their Buffalo Fried Chicken Liver, however they no longer have it on the menu.  Their Shrimp Poboys was huge and yummy! And, the onion rings are good as well.  I had their chocolate cake and key lime flavor cheese cake.  Both were delish as well.  They have a large selection of wine and beer, a definite bonus.

The Bad: We love the music in the smoking room, but it can get quite smoky.  If they can switch the music in both rooms, it would be awesome!

The Ugly: the bouncer to the place next door.  Just because I don't have tatoos, cancer stick on my lips and rock out with the women that think they are bad ass, doesn't make me less of a human being.

I can't believe this place has earned an average of 4 stars. I tried to eat dinner here the other night with some friends from out of town; it was easily the worse restaurant food I have had in Atlanta since moving here several  years ago.

I tried the shrimp salad, husband got the turduckon burger, and friends had the veggie burger and beef burger, respectively. Only the beef burger was even close to edible. It was late and there were no other options open so I choked down my salad. My husband only took one or two bites of his food. If Grant Central Pizza had been open, we would have sent the food back and gone next door. Maybe they were just really, really off the night we went. Be careful.

It was my first time visiting The Glenwood and I was pleasantly surprised.  They actually have a non-smoking room for the more "mature" crowd if you catch my drift.

The bartenders are attentive and the wait staff rocks.

If you're looking for a fun appetizer, try the Green Tea Cured Salmon Bento box.  The Tobiko Cream Fraiche is definitely worth every bite.  It tastes like smoked cream cheese with a spicy kick, wrapped in what looked like a grape leaf.

The Housemade Black Bean burger is worth going back for!  Its Jalapeno Goat Cheese spread adds a little kick to the burger.  My boyfriend ordered the Eastern North Carolina BBQ burger but wasn't too pleased with his as I was of mine.  It was a tad bit too salty and dry.  If you're going to order this burger, make sure you order it "wet" so you get an ample amount of BBQ sauce on your burger.

They only have one shuffleboard table at the bar so make sure you leave your DL with the bartender and get on the list on weekends when it gets busy.  The music is pretty mello jello and the bar itself is pretty casual and has a good ambiance.

The warm, rustic orange painted wall behind the bar against the exposed stone brick wall on the opposite side creates a very inviting atmosphere for you and your date or a group of friends.

The Glenwood - it went down...like a clown Charlie B-b-br-br-brown.  I'd heard good things and we were feeling like trying someplace new and somewhat nearby so we headed over to EAV.  We had dinner in the dining section of this bar/restaurant.

Beer - I opted for their rotating tap beer which was Magic Hat #9 at the time.  MH9 is a solid choice - not really amazing, but pretty good.

Pork Loin - It wasn't bad, but I wouldn't get this again  The flavor wasn't bad, but it seemed like it had been sliced earlier then re-cooked as the slices were cooked on the side as well.  Odd.  Not surprisingly, it was pretty overcooked. Ehhhh...

Mac & cheese - This side dish came with the pork.  It was decent - that is all.

Collards - Another pork side dish.  These were pretty good.  I'd get these again.

Apples - They seemed to be poached or stewed in something I couldn't identify.  Again, decent - that is all.

Sauce - Not a huge fan of the sauce.

Salzburger - It was a decent burger.  It's good if you want a burger - it's not going to win any awards or anything like that though.

Onion Rings - I liked these.  They were nicely done.  I'd definitely get these again.

Fried Oreos - I'm kind of an Oreo fiend and somehow had never had fried Oreos before.  So of course I had to get them.  Honestly though, I wasn't too much of a fan.  They were too heavily battered for my taste (strike 1), the batter tasted like funnel cake batter (strike 2), and Oreo itself was pretty greasy (strike 3).  Maybe fried Oreos could be good, but I just wasn't really feeling this.  I guess I take my Oreos kinda seriously though. :P

Service - The server was nice and good overall, but was also a little condescending.  We're not kids so don't call us kids or kiddies or whatever.  Damn.  This was only slightly annoying though - the real problem was how slow the service here was.  It just seemed to take forever to get food, to get the check, to pay the check, etc.  It wasn't busy at all, but yet it really seemed to drag.

Overall, The Glenwood seems to be a decent option if you are in the area and want something other than regular bar food.  However, it's not good enough to really dissuade me from going with the Earl burger when I'm in EAV instead so I'm not sure how much I'd really be hear.  Still, I'd definitely be up for giving it another shot hopefully with better service.

I've stopped by for a drink or food a couple of times in the last two months and alway get fabulous service.  Not only is the service great, but the food is fantastic.  My personal favorite is the ruben egg rolls.  Two food items I never thought would go together, but they are now one of my personal favorites.

There are other options in East Atlanta if you are looking for a pub to watch a popular sports team.  With only three small to medium televisions behind the bar it is hard to find a table with a good view.

I will be coming back with friends to enjoy a few drinks and great food.

Made two stops in Glenwood during and after the Strut, and even though the place was packed by dark, the bar service was AMAZING (as always).  Played some friendly games of shuffle board (we rocked, just sayin), which provides additional entertainment, especially when those waiting for the bathrooms get involved (a mini cheering section of sorts).

The Glenwood is one of the few places in the area that really do care about their clientele as they consistently provide excellent service.  I'm especially impressed with the addition of the wine bar in regards to all the detail and "swank" they put into it (minus any pretentiousness).  I hesitate to comment on their food as I haven't eaten there in quite awhile, but they definitely have unique spins on their menu as compared to the other restaurant/bars in the area, and I've never had a bad meal there.  Plus it's the only place in EAV that I'll order a glass of red wine.

The personal attention you get at this place makes it pretty wonderful.

There are 2 parts to The Glenwood -- a pub side and a wine bar side.  I've been to the wine bar side twice, and was delighted both times.  The food menu has some gems on it that will bring me back; the tur-duck-en burger for one.

Check this place out.  You're likely to make a friend while your there.

I sipped a bubbly glass of champagne in The Glenwood's wine room the other night, impressed by the modern, relaxing atmosphere. The rippling stone walls, modern booths and bar seats, and overall lack of busy decor enabled me to have a satisfying conversation without being distracted by a bubbling fish tank, jangling bead mobile or screaming music.

The bartender was extremely respectful as well.

I'll definitely go back to The Glenwood when in the mood for good wine and great conversation.

Hot damn that was good food.

My girlfriend and I grabbed a beer while we waited for our to go food, and the atmosphere was pretty cool.  A really nice outdoor area.

We took our meals, a chicken "cordon blue" sandwich and chipotle alfredo ravioli with chicken, to the drive in movie theater.  We opened it up and absolutely devoured the food.  We were literally moaning it was so good.  When I was done I was laughing out of food induced happiness and chucked the to go boxes out of the car window I was so stuffed (I later picked them up and threw them away).

Summary: amazing food.  Really, really good food.  Just delicious.

I've been to the Glenwood several times and my latest visit was for brunch. If you've read any of my other postings you'll know that I'm a HUGE fan of brunch and love Atlanta for its many awesome brunch spots. The Glenwood would not fall into this category. This review is specific to brunch and not previous visits that involved dinner and drinks. Note: Dinner/Drinks were fine, but after brunch I couldn't justify giving The Glenwood more than 3 stars.

I landed at The Glenwood after walking around EAV with a friend trying to decide which spot to land for brunch. Dunch at the Earl is always fun, and if it wasn't packed we likely would have ended up there.

The Glenwood was almost empty and at 1pm on Sunday this is likely not a good sign. The menu was full of interesting choices including fried oysters and eggs, shrimp and grits, and a mushroom spinach frittata. My friend got the oysters and eggs. He asked if he could add a few jalapeno hush-puppies he had had on a previous visit, but was told that they didn't make that batter till 4. I ordered the mushroom, spinach, and feta frittata. The waitress was nice, but a little flighty since she said brunch wasn't her normal gig.

The food arrived within a resonable time. I must admit their grits are good. The frittata was a little disappointing. It lacked flavor and was just "meh" for lack of a better descriptive word.

Since I've enjoyed great brunches at other locales it is really difficult for me to rank the brunch at The Glenwood very high. It was nice to get a seat quickly, something that is unusual for brunch on Sunday. I doubt I'll give brunch there a try in the near future. Maybe I'll shoot for dinner next time around.

I'm a North Carolina native, so my idea of barbeque is a far cry from what is typically served in Atlanta.  When I saw "Eastern NC style barbeque" advertised on the menu at The Glenwood, my first thought was "Hmmm...I'll be the judge of that!"  Well, judge I did!  It was the closest thing to my favorite hog style that I've had since I left NC.  For those wondering what all the hoopla is...the brief explanation is vinegar and pepper.  That's what makes Eastern NC barbeque so good.  Its not the meat and sauce barbeque that you get in so many places.  Its pulled (or more typically chopped) pork flavored with vinegar and red pepper flakes and other niceness.  Let me tell you...The Glenwood did an awfully decent job of my beloved hog style (see last meal).

So why not 5 stars you ask?  Well, we went on a Saturday afternoon around 5:30ish.  I think they opened at 5:00.  Anyway, there were plenty of workers in the place but do you think anybody bothered to greet us?  We stood at the door for about a minute looking around, waiting for some attention.  We finally just sat ourselves in a booth.  We sat for a good 5-10 minutes before someone finally sauntered over to the table.  You know what the server asked?  "Are y'all gonna be getting food?"  What kind of question is that?  Am I not sitting at a table looking ravenous?  If I was just there to drink, I would've sat at the bar.

But speaking of drinks, there is a good selection of beer to choose from, both imported and domestic.  They even serve some brewed right here in Atl.  I had the Sweetwater Blue I think it was called.  Blueberry flavored beer.  The server poured the beer into the glass and left the bottle.  That's when I noticed the "best when served by" date was 3-8-09. --sigh-- I was there on 4-18-09.

The other thing is the bathroom.  Just hope you don't have to go.  The toilet was truly disgusting in the ladies room.  I'm glad I ate first (I think).

The saving grace is the barbeque.  Its plentiful and tasty.  I got my barbeque sandwich with onion rings that I didn't finish. They were crunchy and plentiful, but a little lacking on the onion for my taste.  The sandwich also came with jalepeno cheddar hushpuppies which were a little over done and coleslaw that I piled on my sandwich.

Given the lack of attention when I arrived and the yuckiness of the restroom, I probably wouldn't go back.  But alas...the barbeque is just that darn GOOD! and I don't have to go to NC to get it.

Fried Oreos + Vanilla Ice Cream = Love in your mouth

    Glenwood... Oreos.... Do It.... Now!!!

    Review Source:

In the midst of a show at the Earl last night, I was struck with a fried Oreo craving. My phone stated the time as 11:30 pm. Unsure of the Glenwood's hours, I made a beeline for the door and out into the rain.

I had already told my companion about the Oreos previously; she required no prodding in joining me.  The Glenwood was dimly lit and there were about 10, 12 people along the bar and at a couple of tables. It was eerily quiet for a neighborhood bar. It felt like we were interrupting something.

Just as I ascertained it wasn't a private function, a distinguished looking gentleman asked me if he could be of any help.

"Yes, I want deep fried Oreos, please."

He winced slightly, looked at his watch, and hesitated briefly, "I'll see if the kitchen can put those together. We shut down the fryer already."

    ::heart sinks::

I was appreciative that he was even looking into it and we waited with tempered giddiness.  In the meantime, a server asked if we needed help. I repeated the Oreo request and added that someone was already looking into it for me.  His reaction led me to believe it was about as likely as a marching band parading through the bar behind me in Starship trooper costumes [which I totally would've been up for, too].

His face looked a little pained, he said they had already closed [and cleaned] the kitchen, and gave me a small sympathetic smile.

We didn't even bother to sit down.  It was akin to an emergency room lobby.  We just stood, pacing, waiting for the news -- good or bad.  Did we lose all hope of receiving an Oreo transfusion?

Out came the Oreo God [whom is possessed of a white mane and black brows] to inform us that we were to be blessed by deep fried goodness in a short while. He hooked it up!  We rejoiced in our booth.

He asked what we'd like to drink. "Milk," I responded. He thought for a second, said he was pretty sure they had some somewhere but that we wouldn't be charged for it [likely because it wouldn't amount to a normal serving size].  A few minutes later, he brought out piping hot fried Oreos, followed by two small glasses of milk.

We happily ate them, carefully rationing our precious milk supply and acknowledging that we obviously made a great decision by bailing on the concert early.

I told him he was the greatest person I had met all day.  His name is Bill and he's one of the owners and he delivers dreams to rained-on girls.

This may be old news -  I hadn't been to the Glenwood for a few months until this week - but the second non-smoking half of the bar is open.  Did I mention it's NON-SMOKING?!  There are some issues with it - it has a dampened atmosphere more like a quiet date-night restaurant and is not as lively as the smoking half of the bar - but I plan to support it because I would really like more non-smoking options in Atlanta.

Aside from the wonderfulness of waking up the next morning and not smelling like stale smoke, I really like the Glenwood.  I've been there about 15 times in the past couple years.  While the food is good - more on that below - I prefer to just drink a couple beers while playing shuffleboard or, when the weather's nice, to sip on gin & tonics and people watch at the tables in the front on Glenwood Ave.

About the food - I read some other reviews from yelpers with bad experiences, but I've never had a meal I didn't like here.  This past week I had a tuna melt that met all of my tuna melt requirements - served on rye, well toasted, tasty cheese, tomato, and not too much mayo.  My favorite thing on the menu is the pimiento cheese appetizer, even though I still think there's something weird or just plain wrong about the concept of pimiento cheese in the first place - shredded cheese with mayonnaise??  I grew up in the Midwest, but even for me that's a bit much sometimes.  Anyway, the sides that come with the pimiento cheese make it special - crackers, jalapeno apple jelly, candied pecans, and fried pickles.  I love salty and sweet combos, and this is heaven.

All that said, I don't usually eat at the Glenwood because it's a little pricier for entrees and it has somehow just fallen into that bar/drinks category in my mind when I run through places to eat out.  I'll be making more of a conscious effort to eat here now, though, to support the non-smoking side.

Recently  I made the 25 minute trek over to East Atlanta Village, where we were going to see a show at the Earl. I'd heard of The Glenwood while reading about the new Porter Beer Bar in Little 5 Points.  Reviews of PBB seemed hit or miss and someone commented on how they liked The Glenwood much better. The Glenwood is walking distance from The Earl so I wanted to give it a shot.

I was hoping for a pub with a large variety of interesting beers on tap (digging IPA's lately), and I was slightly dissapointed in that regard (I didn't look at the bottle list), but the food was the shiz.

As an appetizer we got the Fried Blue Cheese Grits with Bruleed Butternut Squash and Pomegranite Juice. This rocked my face off.
It was a small lightly fried grit cake, topped with the squash (which I assume they finished with a torch ala creme brulee), surrounded with the pomegranate juice along with the pomegranate seeds and chopped pecans. I don't even like pecans but everything was amazingly balanced. The sweet sauce, the nutiness of the pecans and cheese, and the charred squash along with the overall smokiness of the dish worked in concert to give me multiple mouthgasms.

The entrees looked very good (I REALLY want to see what their Turducken Burger looks like), but I wasn't feeling hungry enough so I will have to wait until next time to try any of those. Instead I got their burger (called the Salzburger) which was cooked perfectly to my request (medium), with fried pickles for topping, and some super crunchy and perfectly fried onion rings (not as spicy as mine).

My dining cohort had a broccoli and beer soup served with a mini grilled cheese placed in the middle. Our enthusiastic waitress Autumn informed us that the soup and the grits we ordered were new, so she had tasted them that day and she agreed that they ruled. I plan on going back real soon, and you should check it out.

With a full belly and a blown mind, we headed to The Earl for the show.

After discovering that Graveyard is not open for lunch during the week, I dropped into The Glenwood - nice pub decor and daily specials that included an Irish potato soup and sweet red curry chicken with mashed potatoes. I stuck with the basics and had a nice and enjoyable meal.

Bacon cheeseburger - soft bun, the burger was juicy and cooked medium as I requested (I'm constantly surprised how hard it is for most places to get this right), nice beef quality. The burger recipe could pack a little more personality, but it was still fine.

Fries - somewhat thin fries, but perfectly crisp. A bit too much salt, though.

Mac and Cheese - I was a bit surprised - it was a nice, creamy cup of mac and cheese with fresh scallions on top. Not too bad.

Overall, just a decent place to grab a bite. They are a pub that does a fine job providing food.

Considering I never heard of the word "Gastropub" a year and a half ago, I am beginning to think it has already lost its meaning. I have been to three so-called Gastropubs in Atlanta and they are all completely different. The first, Tap, is a nice bar with a great patio. The food wasn't all that inspiring. The second, Holeman & Finch, has a menu that can best be described by this layman as odd. Given the term comes from England, their interpretation is probably fairly authentic. The third was my visit today to The Glenwood. Their take is apparently "smoky dive bar" with food.

I needed more info so upon looking at wikipedia, it apparently is merely a bar with high-quality food, above "pub grub". Pretty vague. I suppose, The Glenwood fits this description in several ways. First, it is first and foremost a bar. While the food may be decent, you would never mistake it for a white tablecloth establishment. No separate dining room, cigarette smoke lingering in the air, a shuffleboard table in the corner. Second, the menu does provide more upscale chow than a typical bar. The menu isn't as off-the-wall as Holeman & Finch, which I found to be a plus, but there are a few intersting takes, such as the Turducken Burger and Rabbit Brunswick Stew. I went with the Eastern NC BBQ Sandwich, a generous portion which had a great blend of vinegar and spice.

Unfortunately for me, though, the place just looks too much like a divey bar to want to spend a couple of hours eating there. There are just too many good choices in Atlanta to give up that much on atmosphere. But if I happen to be in the area late night and want a brew or two, no problem.

I'm tryin' guys. I really am. I like you as a concept and my service has always been very good.  I return occasionally because I want to support neighborhood places since you're basically in my neighborhood.  I like the deck and the upgrades you seem committed to making.  So I might overlook the dirty rice with an aroma of fish a little too much on the....fishy side.  I also would overlook the fact that when chewing on said dirty rice, I might find, say, a whole bay leaf in my mouth which I admit, adds an interesting textural note to the dish, but not one that's enticing.

However, I kind of have to draw the line at finding the produce sticker still attached to my port wine poached pear.  Details, people.  Hell, screw the details, this is just sloppy cooking.  They manage to remove the produce stickers at Doc Green's, for crissakes.

For now, I'm keeping you at three stars.  But you're on double secret probation.  Hopefully the next time I come back, I'll be able to update this to something more flattering.

I really have to come back here. I was sitting at the bar thoroughly enjoying myself and thinking my boy would love it. The beer selection is great. The bizarre music selection was great.  The bartender was engaging, attentive and charming. The size of the place was cozy...I could barely remember that Cameli's and "that vegan place." Both of which I enjoyed, used to be here. They fixed it  up real nice.

Then a client and I moved to a booth to have dinner and do some business. Our wait service was distracted and confused, but the food was very very good for a "gastropub" as everyone seems to be calling it.

Highlights included a special green tea cured salmon in a bento box with other stuff...but dang the salmon was nice. I can still taste it....

The sweet garlic soup was lovely, and though I only had a spoonful, I wish I had ordered it. I love garlic and the rich creamy nuttiness of this soup emphasized all that is usually hidden of the secret and many delights of the garlic clove.

Fried pickles were awesomely crisp, not dripping in oil... and breaded in something with actual flavor to it...I love other folks simple greasy versions of these, but these were a delight...unfortunately the portion was just too danged small.

Our entrees were nice, but the apps were better. And honestly I might have had too many beers by the time they came. The beers were good too: I had a Rogue Dead Guy ( a fave), a Golden Monkey, a Terrapin, and two others I can't remember...

It is a bit pricey...so I will still have to have a few at Gravity before walking over here, but it was nice and I will be back for the beers and a little noshing. Note: My visit was at the bizarre time of 3:30-7:30 Sunday.

Since the Glenwood opened, it has made me sad to walk by, remembering the glory that was Cameli's that once occupied that spot. It wasn't until the day before Thanksgiving that I finally went there with a party of 5 for a pre-show dinner.

It was inexplicably crowded when we arrived -- at 8pm on a Wednesday. I soon figured out that that was because everyone in East Atlanta had family in town, and the Glenwood is definitely a place that I would choose to bring my folks. The restaurant hadn't anticipated this either, but the service was terrific even though our poor server was waiting on half the full restaurant (the patio was full too!).

The vibe is classy, and there is a little something on the menu for everyone. A couple folks had burgers, my boy had the cheesesteak, the other woman at the table had the tuna melt, and I had the NY strip, rare. Their fries were impressive, and if they had been cooked for about 20 seconds longer would have elevated themselves to the best fries in Atlanta. Even so, they were fabulous. My steak was prepared nicely, a really lovely cut. The sauce was flavorful, though I would have liked for the peppercorns in it to be chopped a bit finer. I kept getting unpleasant mouthfuls of crunchy pepper. The mashed potatoes were divine (or perhaps I should call them mashed butter with a little potato?), and the collard greens were tasty -- and I don't really like collard greens.

All in all, the Glenwood is a wonderful addition to the East Atlanta Village, one that I will definitely be back to. I did find it  a bit odd that they have a video game and a shuffleboard game outside the restrooms...it didn't really match the rest of the decor, but it certainly didn't mar my dining experience.

    RIP Cameli's...

I've been to The Glenwood a few times now; the first couple of times I thought the food was just ok but enjoyed the atmosphere on the outdoor deck.

The last two times I've been back, both within the past week, I was pretty much blown away.

Saturday was brunch; our server Emily was top notch, very sweet and attentive but not overly so. I got the shrimp and grits and they were really fantastic, some of the best I've ever had.

Last night I returned for dinner for a friend's birthday. This time I ordered the tuna melt with mac n cheese and both were really amazing (well, as amazing as a tuna melt and mac n cheese can be). I didn't have a single complaint about either, and the presentation was actually really pretty too.

I can't help but wonder if maybe they have a new chef? Either that or the chef's just recently reached his or her potential.

Other than the food, I love the overall atmosphere; as mentioned by another reviewer, the inside boasts a really neat stone wall with lots of exposed dark wood. The outside deck is great for relaxing and enjoying drinks with friends, the only downside is occasionally you get some not so nice aromas wafting over from a nearby dumpster.

Service is a bit spotty; food usually comes quickly (has for me anyway), it just takes a while to get the bill. But overall this is one of my favorite spots in the East ATL.

I have been urning for something cute, quaint, and affordable, and low and behold... this is it! I had the burger, and it was fantastic. It was nice to see things on the menu that not only sounded appetizing, but were also low in price.

The beer list is impressive, and the wait staff was friendly and attentive. The bar itself lends to a definite local vibe, which I think is great in awesome places like the village.

I, for one, can't wait to go back!

If the food and the service even remotely approached the care and attention to detail in the building renovation, this would be a five star review. The Glenwood is a carefully thought out renewal project in EAV, much like Graveyard a couple of doors down. And, unfortunately similar to Graveyard I paid more and got less out of a meal than I would have at Gravity or Flatiron.

The waiter was nice, but when I asked him what his favorite menu item was he literally went through two thirds of the menu pointing to each line saying that each one was "pretty good." Not very helpful, definitely didn't tell me anything that helped inform my decision. He spent some time commenting on how great the beer selection was (not anything earth shattering compared to the other bars nearby). I was a little irritated when I ordered a beer and he acted disappointed and referred to my selection as "simple...your choice."

When the food finally made it to the table (which took quite a long time, even though the bar was mostly empty) it wasn't bad. But it didn't exactly knock my socks off either. I think that out of all the things on our table the onion rings that came with a sandwich were probably the best part, and there weren't enough of them to go around.

Thinking back on the meal, it was probably closer to two stars than three for me. The extra one is a sentimental nod to appreciating something finally moving in to the empty retail spots in EAV.

When i walked in, I was really excited about this new restaurant in EAV.  Great jukebox, just the right amount of people, and it was obvious that the owners put alot of time and effort into turning the space into a nice restaurant/bar.  There is a great deck out back as well as a few video games and shuffleboard (which cost $10 to play, btw).  A friend told me they are planning on opening a music venue downstairs and adding an upper-level terrace.

The food was delicious with good servings.....however, we waited for an hour for it to make it to our table.

The service is really struggling too.  Our server took our first drink order, then needed reminding about EVERY other step of her server responsibilities.  I felt like taking out a pen and paper and writing her out a to-list for her future tables , in an attempt  to prevent my suffering: 1.  Take order 2. Eventually bring those things back to people 3. Tell a cook food order 4. Empty glasses? Ask if they want something else.  .....It was ridiculous.

~Hopefully, it will get better with time... and maybe the addition of another computer for the waitresses to enter in their orders (there were always 4 or 5 of them waiting to put them in.)

This will definitely be a 5star spot soon!

    ~Cheers
