This is the only place on Washington I care to be a patron of on a Saturday night, though really it's best to go during the week. Good beer selection and a dress how you want. Plus, you can sit out on the sidewalk and just observe the ridiculousness that is Washington Ave on the weekend. People might as well just procreate in the streets.
If you want to know what the most extreme combination of short skirt and high heels is, you can witness it while drinking a good draft beer.
Awesome bar right in the heart of downtown. I usually end up here when I head to was ave. The have everything from old school pacman arcade games to shuffleboards in the back. Quick service and decently priced drinks. This place also has one of the most amazing jukeboxes I have ever seen. Absolutely recommend going there.
Review Source:I was in St. Louis for a couple nights and went here. This is a great bar. It's a dive, and that's the way I like them. It has a jukebox and a few games (darts, bubble hockey, shuffleboard). The drinks are priced well. And, they even have a decent selection of beer. The place is kind of small. It has single person bathrooms (one for men and one for women). The only reason that I could not give it 5 stars is because there were people here playing the same exact top 40 music on the jukebox that you hear in every other trendy bar. That dampened the experience for me. But, it probably was just because it was a Friday night and that's the crowd that was there.
Review Source:Sucked. Let me start by saying that I not one of the affliction wearing guys that they all talk about in the reviews of everywhere down here and I know what they are talking about. Â I came here and it was dead and the service still sucked and the staff had no knowledge of any of the drink on their menu which I thought was strange. Â Was very disappointed. Â Won't be coming back.
Review Source:This is truly one of the only real neighborhood bars in this stretch of Washington. Â Drinks are cheaper, and service is better than the adjacent clubs and larger themed bars. Â Plus you can hang out in casual attire. Â The place is scattered with cool bar games. Â They have a couple of pinball machines, shuffleboard, Powerputt, GT, and an HD version of Big Buck Hunter. Â They are into their craft brews here... so much that it almost feels out of place in a dive like this. Â So if you're buddies drag you to Wash ave and you're not into glow sticks or glam, take a jaunt over to Hair of the Dog for some casual fun.
Cons... parking, no food (although they do not frown upon deliveries).
One of the big reasons this place gets high marks from me, the service is incredibly attentive. Â I'm never waiting at the bar for my drink and after I order, they promptly have my drink in front of me ready to consume. Â They always have a good selection of draft beer on 4-5 taps and the prices are easily some of the best in town. Â This place is what I would consider a dive bar, and there is a jukebox and plenty of games scattered around to keep you entertained. Â I love the fact that they have an old school hockey game that is in the same vein as foosball. Â I always have a good time here and with its location on Washington Ave., it's a nice retreat from all of the other joints filled with the club goer from the county.
Review Source:I really can't put this place into true dive bar category but it's as close as you are going to get on Washington in this particular area. Decent choice of music, less of a douche-y crowd than other downtown spots and it wasn't unbearably loud. They have a good bartender, 2 pinball games, Foosball, some little hockey game like in The Karate Kid, Pac-Man/Galaga and shuffle board. Who knew Washington could be this cool?
Review Source:Is it t-shirt time and you got on your mint new Affliction shirt? Â Or maybe you and your gaggle of woo girls wanna hit the town in your hooch dresses? Â Well this isn't your type of place ....but don't worry downtown has plenty of places you can beat the beat all night long.
Living downtown is great but I'll be the 1st to admit our bar scene is douchey. Â Hair of the Dog is a much needed dive bar in downtown and the kind of place you can feel comfortable going to in a pair of Chucks and a t-shirt. Â Drinks are a bit cheaper than most places on Washington and the bar service is a hella lot quicker than most other places.
I dig this place & wish downtown had more places like this so I didn't have venture to Tower Grove or U-City bars on the weekends.
I actually came to Hair of the Dog a few times a few years back with some old work friends and always enjoyed myself. Maybe a little too much, if you know what I mean! The drinks were always cheap and tasty, and the atmosphere is fun and laid back. It can be considered a dive bar, but it's not quite what I think of when I hear 'dive bar' because I think of dirty and skeezy. I wouldn't eat off the floor or anything, but it doesn't feel unsanitary either. They've got bubble hockey, shuffle board, a juke box, and a very friendly staff, so it's hard to go wrong.
In all honesty, I'm not much of a bar person in general, so I hadn't visited again until a few nights ago when they had an event for Craft Beer Week. I didn't partake since I'm not a beer drinker myself, but my husband LOVED it. They featured a bunch of sour beers and the prices seemed decent. The bartender was extremely excited about the selection they had, which made it enjoyable as a customer. The bar no longer allows smoking indoors, which I appreciate, and it was a very inviting crowd.
If I'm in the mood for a very low key evening out with friends, I'd definitely recommend this place!
Nice little dive on Washington. Â Lots of TVs and some pretty good Music playing and the drinks are pretty well priced. Â This place is like an island on Washington since it is not a dance club, the people aren't dressed like the Jersey Shore cast, you can actually have a conversation with someone and liquor doesn't have a ridiculous markup. Â Oh and I can get a PBR here. Â Also, the bar staff was pretty great at making drinks and doing so in an orderly fashion to where I wasn't waiting 10 minutes for a drink. Â
I may have to stumble in here if I'm feeling crowded at another place on Washington.
Since moving out to STL I've been longing for a good dive bar to belly up to and kill a few days of my life. Hair of The Dog is that dive bar. At first glance the beer selection appears to be rather weak, until you see the beer menu. Well rounded mix of quality beers. And fairly cheap too. Been on a few different nights. Usually rather quiet unless there's a concert nearby. Case in point the other night all the dirty hipsters from the Radiohead show seemed to be there. Otherwise good crowd of regulars. Bar staff are solid and friendly. Worth a trip in if you're in there area.
Review Source:Awesome dive bar where everyone knows your name! I came here on a Friday night for a close girlfriend's 26th birthday and it was a great time. Drinks were easy to get since the bar was not too busy and the bartenders were attentive and fast. On another note, I loved all it was all types of different people at this joint!
Review Source:A real bar with real bartenders. Â Hipster and Preppy free.
Have been here several times and have only been disappointed one time when someone had hijacked the TouchTunes and no one could get a decent song in between the terribleness.
Most recently was there prior to the U2 concert. Â The bartender was super patient with my mom who can be a bit indecisive and sent us on our way with full cups of water since it was so dang hot (his idea, we didn't even have to ask). Â Am yet to meet a more thoughtful bartender in the STL.
Hair of the Dog is the best place to booze in Downtown STL hands down. Its not pretentious like most bars. There's not alot of d-bags trying to showboat. Its just real people trying to have a good time. The bartenders can be slow sometimes. They have a pretty good selection of beers, which is surprising. You can get some unique stuff on draft. The shuffleboard table is one of the best in STL too and it is usually pretty easy to get a game in. Foos ball and table hockey are also available.
I really miss the snake they used to have. Not because i particularly like snakes, but it was pretty sweet to see in a bar.
What a great dive bar! Â I have to say this is a fun and cool place to hang out with a bunch of friends. Â I am a vodka drinker, and I like the flavored vodka. Â They have a fabulous selection of all types of vodka and was impressed that they had Whipped Cream Vodka, as I've never been able to find it out in the bars. Â Not only that, the bartender poured generously, and that always makes for a great time.
There was a foosball table and shuffleboard too to add to the fun! Â I would definitely go back next time I'm in St. Louis!
After many late night trips here, I can say, yes, I am a fan! Â Especially now that the bar appears to be non smoking, at least it was last Friday.
Super casual and affordable, I love the games - shuffleboard, board games - look behind the bar! Â The Connect 4 may be missing some pieces, but hey you can use your imagination. Â If you get hungry real late, they have bar pizzas too, just what you would expect.
Check it out if you find yourself on Wash Ave but don't want to go to the clubs.
It's easy to see Wash Ave as a desert. Â You have the Chads of Lucas Park on one end, and the violence of Lure on the other. Â If you accept that Wash Ave is a desert, and you accept that deserts have oases, then I submit to you that Hair of the Dog is one such oasis. Â It's a "regular" bar, populated with "regular" people, that charges "regular" prices, and plays "regular" music at a "regular" volume. Â Not much to write home about you say? Â Think again. Â Location, location, location makes Hair of the Dog what it is. Â Just think: your next trip to Wash Ave doesn't have to be defined by the desert.
Review Source:This is a great great bar to hang out in.  They have lots board games and  tons of bar games, including shuffleboard which not very many bars have. Â
The staff are always great and the drinks are cheap. They are also open till 3am.
Its usually never super crowded which is really nice. Unless they are playing the fight on pay per view. Â
All in all, its my favorite dive bar.
I am not such a fan of the Washington Ave crowd on the weekends. In my opinion, a lot of them are stuck up and obnoxious. Unfortunately, most of the clubs cater towards this clientele (who can blame them?) and it makes good laid back bars somewhat of a rarity. Hair of the Dog fills that void with a relaxed atmosphere and a good drink selection. I also really enjoy their hockey Foosball game! The one draw back of the bar is the fact that they allow smoking. By the end of the night you reek from head to toe and you have probably inhaled enough smoke to equal a pack of cigs! With the impending smoking ban this will no longer be a problem.
Review Source:Two visits to St. Louis. Â Three visits to Hair of the Dog. Â I think it's impressive that the bartender who served us on our initial trip was still here pouring beers when I returned last weekend, six months after my first visit.
The floors are concrete, there's shuffleboard in the back, and yes...a jukebox. The prices for liquor are cheap, and there's great beer on tap. Â Most places in St. Louis pour pints brewed at the local brewery, Schlafly (but that's another review).
Whether bar hopping or bar stopping, this is a great place to stop and throw back a cold one.
In town for business, my coworkers and I were in need of some post-convention revelry.
We wandered up Washington and ducked into Hair of the Dog. It was a good chill place to grab a beer and a table. The music was eclectic which we all liked.
A few issues I had with this bar was that the clientele looked all to be young, like really young. I assume they were 21 strictly because it was a bar, but I would put money on them being closer to high school than college.
Why, St. Louis do you still allow smoking in bars? Why? I live in Houston and even we don't allow smoking inside. Get with it! Ashtray hair is so 1999.
If you want to grab a drink on Washington Avenue but don't want a pretentious goat rodeo, this is the place to go. Â HOTD is a great dive bar. Â I'd give it five stars if it wasn't the smokiest bar in downtown - but hey what can you do? Â
They have a huge beer selection, a ton of games (shuffle board, mega touch, buck hunter, darts, etc), tv's for sports, and bar tenders that  actually know how to make drinks and sling beer instead of how to just look good in a tube top and give you crappy service. Â
The owner takes care of business (unlike the posh club next door) - I've seen this guy throw out anyone who even thinks about making trouble on several occasions. Â This place is just flat out run well. I don't know whether they'll go smoke free after January 2nd (because it may be small enough they qualify for the exemption) but if they do I'll back to upgrade this to a definite 5-Star bar.
Cheap drinks, laid back, awesome bartenders and a great selection of beers. I used to frequent here more than is healthy to admit when I worked on Washington, and I can tell you, it's not for everyone. It's dark, smokey, and pretty standard dive bar interior. Don't expect to walk in here on a Saturday night in your popped collar Polo shirt and be greeted with a smiling bartender, because it won't happen. And that's why I love it.
Review Source:I was treated very badly here....Basically, a friend and I ordered a beer on tap, noticed they had another we had been wanting to try, ran and asked the bartender to change our order (he only poured one). He said I can order something else but I would have to pay for the one he already poured. I said I didn't think that was fair, he told me I HAVE to pay for it (very rudely), I said I'm sorry but I am leaving if that's the case, he yelled across the bar at me, "You are a terrible customer!" Sum of the story: They cannot afford to lose one drink on tap apparently and cannot control their tempers. I was planning buying many more cocktails, which would've made up for the 10 cents they lost. :(
Review Source:Definitely a Dive Bar. Â I don't know if I'd want to come here every weekend. But I agree with other reviewers that said it's a nice change of pace to the other places on Wash ave. A nice place to have a drink with close friends, get a little louder than you would at other places and let loose without being looking frowned upon. Â Drinks are priced well and the bar tenders are friendly.
Review Source:If I could, I'd give HOTD 5 stars just on its name alone! Few know what HOTD really means! Really clever, I thought!
But other than the name, the place was a little disappointing.
The scene was quiet for a Saturday night- about a total of 8 people at the bar. We walked in to play shuffleboard and drink a few beers. The beer selection was great! The scene...? Not so much for me. Lots of big flat screen which were playing movies and tons of games to play: Golden Tee, fussball, darts, shuffleboard, which was great... but the place wasn't warm and inviting. The shuffleboard runs on quarters- about $1/half hour. We could have paid another dollar to finish our game, but we just didn't feel like it. It seemed to be a local hangout and not being a local yet and having just moved to Wash Ave, I felt like I was at the wrong place and didn't feel welcomed at all. Â
Oh well. It was still a nice night out. Probably won't come back here, but you should definitely give it a try for the beer selection and games!
Last night, while my friends and I were walking up to Hair of the Dog, I made a joke that it was probably a dog grooming place, not a bar. Glad I was wrong; I don't have a dog, but I do have an appetite for a good seasonal beer in a divey bar.
I know that this is an A-B town, but it's nice to see a good variety of beers on occasion, and Hair of the Dog is happy to provide that selection. I'm a fan of the Fall Wild Ale that's on tap right now.
My boyfriend has officially found his new favorite spot, because this bar has "everything [he'd] put in a bar, including bubble hockey!" Incidentally, the bubble hockey machine is currently broken, but everything else is pretty fantastic, and if my boyfriend somehow goes missing, this will be among the first places I look.
My favorite local bar.
If you're wearing a button-up, jacket, have your hair blow out and wearing sunglasses, you should probably skip this place.
For such a dive bar, they have a huge selection of beer. I don't mean more than the AB selection, I mean a lot more.
I always call this place a guy's dream basement, tvs everywhere, shuffleboard, pool, foosball, video games.
Just a great place to have a few beers with the boys.
A friend and I checked this place out for a UFC fight, and it was not what I expected in the least. Â I've been back several times since.
It literally looks like this place is falling apart, but I like it. It's the complete opposite of trendy. It's a bar, a drinkers bar, a bar where you can drink your problems away type of bar.
The bartenders are really cool, they keep an eye on your drink, and promptly ask if your ready for another, and they remember what your
having.
The beer list is decent, but liquor is still quicker. Just don't try ordering anything fruity or something that takes more than 3 seconds to make.
To sum it all up quickly, the tables remind me of those found in a grade school cafeteria, I don't recall if all the tables and chairs matched, its smokey, dingy, and cool all at the same time.
The only reason I gave three stars instead of four was one time we were there and there was no AC. Not cool for summer time in STL.
Good dive bar along Washington Ave that provides a nice option to the more expensive and trendy joints. The drinks are strong and priced right. Good choices with the bottle and draft beers. The bar staff is hard working and always hustling.
Hair of the Dog is a welcome respite from the county kids and 30K millionaires that frequent the other Washington Ave spots. It's interesting to see them stumble in and run out because the place isn't cool enough.
The only downside is the air circulation sucks and people smoke very heavily here.
Another one of downtown's dive bars-turned-good. It's appeal to me includes an up-to-date Golden Tee machine, and they showcase the Ultimate Fighting Championships on one of their many flat screen TVs. The drinks are affordable; a protest against the overpriced club scene. And the pizzas are St. Louis style, but somewhat nourishing after a pitcher or two.
Monday Night Football is also a good thing here during football season. It's nice to get away from busier sports bars where you can't talk smack about the bartender's favorite team.
I've actually been able to secure a decent conversation or two with some of downtown's more low-key residents. Check it out!
