So if you actually know of authentic Chinese food, you know this is not the Chinese restaurant to be.

But as a Chinese-American who grew up eating the real deal in Chinatown/Argyle as well as regular visits to the East and West Coasts, there will always be a place in my heart for American Chinese food.  It's like eating a cheeseburger from McD.  It's not a cheeseburger but every now and then it hits the spot.

That being said, OKAY this is probably a 3 star restaurant.  You can't really screw up egg foo young, egg rolls, etc but what made my day at Hong Kong Chef was the UNBELIEVABLE customer service.  Think about that.  Customer Service in a Chinese takeout restaurant.

    1) I ordered some take out and was waiting around for my order when this irate customer calls (I overhear the conversation on speakerphone) about her delivery order of orange chicken.

    2) The customer is very upset,  yelling at the owner because she claims they changed the chicken and now her kids won't eat it.  The owner keeps apologizing and says it is the same, customer gets very offensive, and even after some very uncomfortable comments about the restaurant, the owner apologizes for the confusion and tells the customer she can bring it back for a new order and or a refund. Customer hangs up.

    3) The owner talks to the delivery guy and chef who made the order.  Come to find out the customer's husband called the restaurant to place the order and specifically requested they cut up the chicken a little smaller than usual for his kids.  Owner calls the woman back, she does not pick up so he leaves a voicemail telling her about the request from her husband to cut up the chicken and to bring it back if she wants a new order and or a refund.

Granted the customer was/is a little crazy but for a Chinese takeout restaurant to go out of its way to try and make their customers happy is a random anomaly in an industry where terrible customer service is the norm I have come to expect from Chinese restaurants.

Keep up the great customer service Hong Kong Chef.  You guys are way ahead of the curve.

    Disgusting. Inedible food. PURE GARBAGE.

    My delivery order:
1 Sesame Chicken Dinner (includes egg roll and egg drop soup)
    1 order of Crab Rangoon

The soup was bland and lukewarm. Had a few tastes and discarded.

Crab rangoon was pure cream cheese. Literally a wonton wrapper with cream cheese only. The wonton's were stuffed with so much cream cheese the centers of the crab rangoon were still cool. Ate 1.5 and discarded the rest.

Sesame chicken was not sesame chicken. The chicken bits are sitting in a bright red, sweet and sour sauce with sesame seeds sprinkled on top. It tasted like ketchup. Disgusting. The fried bits of chicken were completely soggy and soaked in this tangy, ketchup-y, red sauce. I ate a few pieces and discarded the rest.

The egg roll was greasy and not fully cooked. The inside of the egg roll was still doughy. The filling was disgusting. Again I discarded.

The only thing I really ate was the fried rice and that wasn't memorable.

Absolutely the worst chinese food I've ever had in Chicago. I threw more of this shit food in the garbage than I ate. What a complete waste!

Spare your time, money and taste buds and find another place for chinese food.

It's always good food. The owner is nice and to the point. It's clean enough for a little tucked away chinese fast food place, I don't fear for my health. I like it!
