Sadly, the most recent time I visited JackSon's I was quite disappointed. They were out of several food items, and I had to change my food order twice because of them being "out" of things. The table service was also poor and our food took about an hour to come out while the place was almost empty (and we only ordered 2 meals). Hmm...
The atmosphere was pretty dead on a Friday night, which was a let down because last time I went on a Friday it was very fun and they had a great live band.
Also, my apple martini was not nearly as good as last time :(
Hopefully JackSon's steps their game back up or I may not return...
Tasty food - when it was FINALLY served. The Saturday night dinner crowd was not very crowded -- four tables, a total of 12 people. Valentine's dinner special was a nice idea, but it took 45 minutes to get our six toasted ravioli appetizer, then another 30 minutes for our salad drenched in dressing to arrive. When the salads were brought to the table, we asked for our entrees because we didn't want to wait any longer. The waiter brought them out in about less than 10 minutes -- unfortunately my stuffed salmon was not stuffed. Back to the kitchen my dinner went. I sat and watched my husband eat his steak modega. while I slowly ate my salad. How can you mess up the dinner special and how can the waiter not notice that salmon dish lacked something very important -- like the crab stuffing? My salmon finally arrived 30 minutes later -- which my husband had to watch me eat because he was long finished with his dinner. The waiter was apologetic and offered a glass of wine and a beer to make up for my wait. The Valentine's special included dessert -- we ordered cheesecake with strawberries. The waiter brought one piece of cake with two forks but WITHOUT the strawberries. Back to the kitchen the waiter went to get our strawberries. Two hours and fifteen minutes later we were finally finished with one of the most frustrating dinners of our lives. The ONLY redeeming factor was that Hudson and the Hoo Doo Cats were playing in the bar, so at least we were entertained. Not sure what was keeping the kitchen staff busy, but they certainly weren't very concerned about us. Our waiter apologized again before we left and asked that we give them another try. Â . Â . not sure if that will ever happen. Now I know why the restaurant side was practically empty and the bar side was hopping.
Review Source:I have come to this place off and on for years and I always forget why I only come every couple of years.  Same problems.  Understaffed or poor service (nobody know what anybody else is doing)  Always "out" of something and it takes the 20 minutes to "get back to you" to let you know.  It's obvious that this is a bar 1st and a restaurant 2nd .(it's like an afterthought)  I mean Friday night at 7pm and you are out of rib eye and salmon. Maybe Sunday night I could understand.  Seems like the staff is drifting about and nothing is getting done.  The food (that was available) was good. It has potential but they need  Restaurant Impossible or something.  Disorganized. Shit or get off the pot. Everyone was polite for what that is worth.
Review Source:Did carryout  and they messed up the order, even after confirming it twice on the phone. They did offer us two free drinks while we waited for them to correct. As the food goes, the fries were just ok, made soggy by the carryout which is not their fault. The steak sandwich was the crown jewel, two unbelievably tender filet Mignon medallions sandwiched between two pieces of cheesy garlic bread...delicious!
Review Source:Ok, I have had enough of Jacksons. Â I have eaten there 6-7 times in the last 6 months. Â Each time the food was good, but the service was questionable. Â Tonight I decided the world should know how bad their service sucks. Â At the very least when someone walks in the door they can be acknowledged. Â Not at Jacksons. Â They look at you and let you sit wondering if anyone will ever approach you for a drink. Â While the food is great, the service is not worth dealing with when you have Maplewood a few minutes away willing to provide good food and good service at multiple places.
Review Source:Meh. I've experienced better - this Yelp rating perfectly sums up my first and only dining experience at Jackson's this past Saturday.
My family and I decided to eat here as we live nearby but had never been. When we walked inside it was warm to the point of being almost uncomfortable in the bar area and while it was cool in the dining room; by the end of the meal we were all commenting on how hot it was in there. Bob, our poor waiter, was the only one serving and was constantly running between the kitchen, all of the tables and the bar to refill sodas. He was super friendly and was the bright spot in the service, but boy was it a long wait to get our food and then to pay the bill.
Famous steak sandwich, um I think not. Go down the street to Columbo's for a better steak sandwich. Jackson's had two tiny medallions of meat on a huge piece of bread, my sister said the meat was good but my Mom said it was a disappointment compared to Colombo's. The burgers here were good - the build your own option is nice, thumbs up on the soft cheddar, but these burgers were nothing special. And boy, do they skimp on the sides. My Dad and sister barely had any fries on their plate. While they had good flavor the plate looked pathetic with a small little scattering of 10 fries on it. My onion rings were good, nice beer batter but too salty for my taste. Their cole slaw had a good flavor and sister #2 loved her fried chicken sandwich - which was a fried breast on a toasted bun. I was pretty disappointed that they were out of pizza shells because the blackened shrimp and chicken one sounded great.
So, the food wasn't bad and I wouldn't be against going to Jackson's just to have a beer or to give their food one more try. But this meal was just plain disappointing. Kudos to Bob for being a great guy and trying his hardest but he needed some help on Saturday, for sure.
I've been to Jacksons with a friend a few times now, mostly on Thursday nights, but it has been a blast each time. Â The bartenders and wait staff are really cool and social. Â I've only been on the bar side of the restaurant but it is very neat looking inside. Â It was nice out yesterday so the front door was open and you could really feel the breeze and the cool air come into the bar off Manchester which was really nice. Â The bar itself is wood and quite long with some nice mid-back barstools. The bar itself looks like it is also from that 1940's/50's era, simple but with character.
There are two booths and then several bar-height tables lining the wall parallel to Kraft Ave. Â The rest rooms are right past the tables directly at the back through a door way. Â To the right of the door to the restrooms is the stage and then a small dance floor directly infront of the stage and an entry way to the dining room area. Â
Yesterday my friend ended up getting a Cuban sandwich with onion rings. Â The sandwich itself was massive and they give you a pretty generous portion of onion rings compared to other restaurants I've seen people order from. Â The bartender also brought around an order of Bavarian Pretzel which looked amazing but I had to decline since I had just come from dinner. Â Recalling all of this just now makes me think i really need to come here for dinner some night and a couple other people have commented that they have an excellent Steak Sandwich.
Thursday nights and Sunday nights there is definitely an older crowd here that enjoy the live music, which isn't that bad either. A lot of them are regulars and come up to dance and enjoy themselves. Â They have Karaoke on Fridays from 9PM to 1AM as well. Â
Unfortunately I didn't get to make it down this way for their St. Patrick's Day street party but will definitely make it a point to do so next year. Â
The inside is non-smoking but they have set up tables outside along Kraft Avenue and you can smoke out there. With the excellent weather we've been having here recently it was nice to be outside for a bit.
JackSon's restaurant/bar is a 3 AM venue with full bar, live music (most nights) and a decent crowd. They are located on Manchester on a row with other restaurant bars in an industrial part of town. Â
They serve above average pub grub and the bartenders can make a mean martini. They have a busy weekday lunch crowd and are a weekend patio day spot for motorcycle groups.
The bar can be older and overly crowded with drunks on Thursdays, due to the pilgrimage from Failoni's, a bar a block away that has a 20+ year tradition of live music and a full house happy hour on Thursdays. People are usually well-watered before they get to JackSon's on Thursdays. So, if you are not prepared to walk into a room full of middle aged+ drunks dirty dancing at 9 pm, choose another night.
Fortunately, JackSon's is now non-smoking. Â There is ample street parking and lots nearby.
Best steak sandwiches ever! We've gone there at least 20 times and never had a bad one- always cooked perfectly, never over done. I'd also recommend the wedge salad with house dressing- a sun dried tomato ranch.
There's a cute outdoor patio and they sometimes have live music at night.
My only other advice would be to bring a sweater- sometimes it can get a bit chilly. Other than that, it's definitely a good dinner option.
Went today with the usual lunch group of 4. Upon arrival (with a reservation), hostess says, "Oh, I didn't look at the reservation book." Hmm!
Got a nice roomy table in the middle of the dining room. Three booths and one table occupied. Got beverages right away. Weren't quite ready to order when server came, but did order the flash-fried spinach ($5.50). It was a HUGE bowl of gorgeous spinach chips. A little greasy. But the flavor was stupendous! Does this qualify as a vegetable? One dining partner said it was like lace. I didn't know she ate lace. Oh well, one man's trash is another man's dinner!
Ready to order. Order #1. He wanted the Marty Melt (turkey burger made healthy with cheese and bacon). Server said, "Let me see if we still have it. It's so popular, we might be out." Hello, it was 11:30 a.m. There were hardly any other people in the joint. But, sure enough, no more turkey burger. Hmm! If it's that popular, GET MORE!
Order #2, Order #3. Server leaves the table. I'm sitting there with my menu open, and my order didn't get taken. Hmm!
I followed where she went . . . to the back of the bar, like where the bartender stands and said I wanted to order. That poor thing was so embarrassed. She could  not apologize enough. So I did get to order. What a treat!
We waited a LONG time for the food to come out (remember, hardly any other people there, and they were eating) and when it did, only three dishes were there. She said it'd be a minute for the fourth. Dining partner told us to go ahead and eat while it was hot. Good thing! She waited another 7 minutes. When server brought that fourth dish, she put it down and asked, "What am I missing?" Well, it was the onion rings. It took another 5 minutes for those to come out. Hmm!
The food:
Two got Ben's Burger ($8) -- a 10-oz. chopped steak on garlic cheese bread with grilled red onions and peppered bacon. Both ordered medium. Mine still had red inside . . . not pink . . . red. Ate it anyway. Flavor was fine. Dumped the garlic cheese bread and consequently didn't get any cheese. We both opted for onion rings. Quite tasty, a little greasy. But you know how you bite into an onion ring and the entire piece of onion comes out on that one bite and slaps you in the chin? Well, that didn't happen!! Cheers for that! I often rate a burger by: if I have to add condiments (ketchup or mustard) or salt. I added all, so there was something missing, even though it was quite tasty. Other dining partner gobbled up the dish, but he ate the garlic cheese bread, so it might have been an important component of the flavor/taste profile.
Our vegetarian friend got a spinach salad, but dumped so many toppings, there wasn't much left. It was left rather drab ($6.75). She also got the Erica's pizza ($10.95) without the chicken . . . just like Yelp! reviewer Erika! That was A-OK with a four-cheese blend, mushrooms and fresh diced tomato base.
Our fourth dining partner got the bum end of the stick. She built a burger with an 8-oz. Angus burger on grilled bun, pickles, lettuce, tomato, remoulade on the side and white Cheddar ($6.50). This was the fourth dish that took so long to come out. Well, it was clear why it took so long. That cow was killed four or five times to the point of crispiness . . . all the way through the patty. I think she took two bites, then put it all down. She also got onion rings, but couldn't eat them for the greasiness.
OK. We're finished. Sit. Sit. Sit. Server comes to see who needs to-go vessels. Two of us. I really don't know why this was such a big deal, but she brought a styrofoam box for our vegetarian pizza friend and two pieces of foil for me. And she totally made a big whoppin' explanation of it. Gads, what's the difference? So I used the foil and the condiments I'd added to the burger (remember, no bun) ended up dressing the foil!
Sit. Sit. Sit. Server and hostess start busing the table. WHAT!! Let's move this along. Give us the bill. OK, you can appreciate when somebody takes your finished plate away, but we were ALL finished and ready to go. READY FOR THE BILL!! Then they bused twice to get the bread and the spinach off the table. COME ON!! This is lunch. We don't have until 6 p.m.!
A knife fell off a plate to the floor, just missing someone's purse. Had it fallen in the purse, the knife was HERS!
WHY DO YOU BUS A TABLE WHEN THE PEOPLE ARE STILL SITTING THERE!!!???
DON'T DO THAT!!!
CUT IT OUT!
STOP!
IS THIS CLEAR?!?!?!
When the bill arrived, we made short order of that. This was a 90-minute lunch, not including drive time! It was burgers and a pizza!
When we left, everybody (not the other patrons, silly!) was so appreciative, saying "Thanks! Have a great weekend!" Our server said it at least twice!
For a Thursday evening we had the whole dining room to ourselves and they had the mood lighting just right, how romantic :) The bar area seems to be the place the regulars like to hang out. Smoking is allowed in the bar area only, the dining room is nonsmoking.
Our service was great and our waitress was so nice. I wanted a martini and didn't quite know what to order. I knew I wanted something fruity like a cosmo, she suggested an Appletini and it was just what my taste buds were craving.
We started with the Sample Platter. An array of fried, smothered goodies from mac and cheese bites to loaded potato skins, toasted ravioli and chicken strips. The mac and cheese bites were a little much for me. I loved the loaded potatoe skins and wished there were more chicken strips. The platter came with sour cream and marinara sauce. I would have liked to see a honey mustard or ranch dressing as a compliment for the chicken strips but I made do.
The hubby had the Cajun Chicken Pasta. So many times Cajun chicken is overdone and dry but this chicken was perfect, SO juicy and so spicy. I don't know how he ate it with the combination of the spicy pasta sauce, too much spice for me. I had the Tropical Salad, a giant bowl of salad with mandarin oranges, chicken and lots of dried cranberries with a creamy poppy-seed dressing (I opted for no pecans).
FYI, their website menu isn't up-to-date with the menu we had so expect to see a some different choices.
We were recently looking for a BBQ place to eat as BBQ had been on my mind all freakin' day. Â In our searches for something open late we came across JackSon's. Â Even though they're not technically BBQ, they were close enough to peak our interest.
There was a five dollar cover that night (Saturday) due to them having live music, but that was ok because with cover they gave you a $1 dollar drink voucher (except premiums). Â The crowd did seem to be a bit older, but I saw some younger couples and people sprinkled in the mix so I didn't feel completely out of place. Â I'm from the east coast so I'm still not used to smoking being allowed in the restaurant and that threw me off a bit as I don't like to smell like smoke after every night out.
The food though was a mixed bag. Â I had the cheeseburger wrap with onion rings and I can't really say that I was disappointed. Â I munched it down really quickly. Â Two thumbs up. Â The other person in my party had the angry shrimp and the fried crab cakes. Â The angry shrimp sauce was absolutely incredible. Â Just enough spice and it was full of flavor. Â Two thumbs up again. Â The only miss was the fried crab cakes. Â I understand St. Louis is nowhere near an ocean and fresh crab is going to be hard to come by, however this was a total miss. Â The crab didn't taste too well and just was awful. Â
The service was really good and I'd love to give them 3.5 stars, but there is no half star option. Â I wouldn't mind visiting them again for lunch or an early dinner.
JackSons' is one of those restaurant/bars that grows on you. While they have an older crowd on Thursday and Sunday nights due to music selection, the place is packed, listening to the Rhythm Rockers. On other nights, there's a variety of bands offered from jam to rock to 80's cover to Blues/R&B.
The place offers a good time for those in the know; especially during the late Spring, where the outdoor patio allows for a refreshing breeze while you enjoy a tasty beverage.
When I lived in Dogtown, I used to walk over to JackSons' for their Crunch n' Goo (Macaroni & Cheese w/ flash-fried spinach) and Ben's Burger (ginormous, buttery, cheesy burger). WOW-factor goodness; the plates are huge! Talk about comfort food! I still crave their menu from time to time and occasionally go out of my way for one of their meat-friendly items; this place ain't no salad bar. (Although they offer an iceberg lettuce wedge w/ homemade sundried tomato ranch... yum)
During their Tuesday Night Trivia, they also offer $2 Tuesdays, where burger baskets, wings and domestic bottles are $2. It's a pretty good deal in my book.
I'll clarify and say that the place doesn't excel in everything. Like any other restaurant/venue/bar, there are kinks. But what they do well is sell their atmosphere, and they do it well. It's like my very own Cheers.
WAY TO GO JACKSON'S FOR HELPING OUT THE STRAY RESCUE PARTY!!! Â Good thing too since I didn't even know they existed until then.
I didn't get to sample too much of the menu, but we did get the burger, chips and chicken kabobs....all terrific!!!
Service at the bar was also spot on and very prompt.
We'll have to go back and check out some music there some night.
Didn't notice the veggie thing, but it'd be pretty simple to add some steamed veggies as a side dish.....probably would still get the chips though. Â :)
I want to give them a 3.5 (based on the food only, would be higher for their community support). Jackson's this past weekend had a community outreach and proceeds went to Stray Rescue. However, I agree with the previous poster about being not so Veg Friendly. The past weekend the only vegetarian item on the menu for the special event was chips. So that was disappointing. However, on the regular menu you can make substitutions, plus my favorite dish is on the appetizer menu, the fried macaroni, which I CRAVE.
Tuesday nights Jackson's has trivia night that starts after 8:30 (and is free)
Update: Â We went to the Stray Rescue event on May 25 at Jackson's. Â The event was great and such a good cause! Â I'm very happy Jackson's participated in benefiting such a wonderful organization. Â Now, the bad side- they had no vegetarian food they were offering that day. Â None. Â Zip. Nada. Â Nothing. Â They offered homemade chips outside, but I'm not sure what they were fried in. Â Inside the restaurant, I believe they had onion rings on the menu. Â Again, not the greatest selection for your animal loving friends who also do not eat animals. Â Very disappointing. Â We ended up drinking some beer and then leaving to have dinner elsewhere.

I do enjoy going ot Jackson's, however I can only give them three stars for not being more veg friendly. Â If I'm not in the mood for a so-so spinach salad or a bland mac 'n cheese / crunch 'n goo, there's nothing else for me to order. Â I recently started getting Erica's pizza without the chicken- very good, I do recommend this. Â They are doing a BBQ event with Stray Rescue the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Â I'm anxious to see if they will think about their animal friendly patrons for this BBQ and offer some non-meat items! Â Trust me, I will update this and let you know!
