I used to love this place. Â They had amazing soups and the food was always fresh, then something happened. Â Not sure what it was, but they stopped serving small portions of fresh soup and their salsa was not fresh. Â it still tasted good but not fresh. Â My family and I go to Clark for mexican food now.
Review Source:A three and quarter review, nice place, not swankville, but tasty Mexican grub, served up hot and fast. Â It is great for breakfast, the chilaquiles are super tasty. Â I echo other reviewers praise of the home made pico de gallo. Â Guacamole is tasty as well.
It is BYOB. Â I have not had the service issues that other reviewers have noted, but at this level in the restaurant world (entry level for servers) it is hit or miss. Â Just been lucky so far at Jesse's.
My word!
I only happen to find out about this place because my friend served his partner their tacos and they went on and on about it. I'm glad we walked over raher than me picking up something on the road because that PICO is the BOMB!
I don't care for Pico de Gallo because so many people just throw it together but JESSE'S knows that it should sit and let the flavors mesh and gel together then mellow and serve it. I mean the juice from the chopped veggies was great enough to pour on my taco and be done~ BAM~
I had a steak taco. I did complain that $2 is over priced and everybody knows that but when in ROME.
I also had the steak gordita and I don't care for beans but figured telling them no beans aunque en espanol would be bothersome.
There was more than enough meat on that little taco that I made two and shared.
Glad my friend partner told me to at least try the pico because there was no turning back. As for the Gordita - it's topped as usual (beans, meat, cheese, cilantro, onions) no TEX-MEX style here and I love them for offering.
If you don't know, TEX-MEX is lettuce/tomato/cheese. The contra is just cilantro and onions.
Can't wait to order a to-go 32oz Pico on my return trip.
4 stars for location
5 stars for what I had
3.5 for decor and ambience
4 stars for being able to see the kitchen (this is pretty standard in ORD but I love it all the same)
4 stars for value (quality + price)
For years, Scott always went the lyric was, "I wish that I was Jesse's Girl." At least wishing you're Jesse's Gril is a little less embarrassing, right?
Ordered from Grubhub on a Tuesday night, on the later side...they were closing in 40 minutes.
Arrived within the estimated time, so I was pleased. Also, I was psyched that the delivery driver read the instruction to call us when he was here, as the buzzer is broken and we feel guilty waking up the neighbors.
Free horchata courtesy of grubhub was delicious. Scott drank a bunch of it when I wasn't looking, dang!
Chips and guacamole very good...tomato and onion in the guac, very little cilantro. Would have liked a little lime in it, but that's just my taste.
I got one of the combos, because I am a serious ho for mexican food- "spiced pork" (al pastor, no? why don't you call it that, jesse?) taco, "spiced pork" enchilada verde, and verde chicken tamale.
The spiced pork is very cinnamon-ey. Nice, generous chunks o' meat and chopped cilantro in the taco. Enchilada was nice and cheesy. Tamale was FABULOUS. One of the best tamales I've had. They also heeded my request for some extra verde sauce on the side. I absorb that stuff like it's water. Also, it had a kick to it, which I was happy about.
Scott had a humungous chicken fajita burrito...definitely enough left over for another meal.
Tres leches cake to finish, scott ate a bunch of that when I wasn't looking, too. Very tasty...definitely homemade.
I am sure I will be ordering from Jesse's again.
We've been to Jesse's over the past 6 years, and I have to agree completely with the most recent reviews. It had been awhile since we'd eaten there, and we also went because we needed to cater Mexican for an upcoming party. Â The place seemed dirty and the service was awful (and rude, really). NO ambiance...the owner's wife watched a Mexican blooper show the whole time. This was also irritating because our 5 year old was completely distracted from eating by the TV. When Jesse came out of the kitchen to discuss catering with us, apparently he was going to be busy on the day we were interested in and made us feel it would be a total hassle for him (although it would have cost us $150 or so). Needless to say, we didn't order from them for our party. Â The food is good, but I can't justify giving any more stars because of it. I don't think we're going back.
Review Source:They still get four stars for super food, but the last time we were there the service was awful. The only person in the restaurant was one girl who looked maybe 14 or 15. We had to remind her to bring us chips and salsa and water (which we didn't get til we were almost done eating). It was quite a while after we'd placed our orders before we even heard any cooking happening - we were starting to wonder if maybe there weren't even any cooks in the back.
C'mon, Jesse's! Get it together. This was the worst service I've had at any restaurant in a while. Your food is great, but service this bad will sink your reputation.
I finally decided to give them a try, first the waitress did not greet us, had like a (ghetto) attitude, so customer service is not really good there, but the food was good, I ordered the carne asada dinner plate which it was good, decent portion. Did mention to make it well done, it wasn't really. I order a taco combination plate for my daughter, she found lots of fatty pieces on her meat. Overall it's a decent place, just make sure you give them instructions on how you want your food made.
Review Source:The outside is little different from the vast multitude of Mexican restaurants in the area. The interior is nice, clean, but again unremarkable. What gave this place the 4 star was my meal. I have had skirt steak many times, but their's was moist, cooked right, and a reason alone to come here.
Review Source:I live by clark street and we went to jesses to see what the buzz is about. I went with a group. I ordered the tampequena which is very soft and tender and my friends ordered nachos and chorizo tacos which was phenomenal because the portions were big and authentically tasty. Â I couldn't believe the best mexican food I ever tasted in my life came from west rogers park. As well the service was friendly and prompt. We as also felt safer than going to congested gangsterland clark street where there's no parking.. I would def come back and recommend it to everyone and their mama.
Review Source:We happened on this place by chance, and enjoyed our lunch very much. Everything was fresh and delicious. The hostess/server was apparently doing several jobs at once, but the food came promptly and the salsas were awesome!! We will definitely be back. Try it. Don't be put off by the interior decorating. It's a taco joint, friend.
Review Source:I live off of Western so I pass this place all of the time. From Yelp reviews it seemed to be a decent place... The first thing I noticed was how dirty the joint is. The high chairs are absolutely disgusting. I mean would it kill you to wipe them down once every week at least. The things look like they have months and months of shit on them!
Secondly, the server was completely unaware of server etiquette. I do not blame her, but the owners who have no expectations of her. Â Meanwhile, the owners stand around behind the counter without uttering a hello, goodbye, how are things, etc...
The good news is that the food is half-decent. Â Some of the chicken seemed to be either recycled off a previous diner's plate or just old as hell. Â The guacamole was good, but come on, how hard is guacamole to make. Â The enchilada was the best thing we ate. Â
You get what you pay for, and for these prices, that's decent food with some disturbingly dirty surroundings and completely clueless employees. Â BYOB helps the cause dearly!
This place used to be great, but they really, really, need to lay off the weed. Â And I smoke a lot of weed, if I'm the one saying that, they should really listen. Â
Food here can be great, but you all should know they were shut down by the health department for a little while. Â The main problem why I will never patronize them ever again is how absurdly awful, bad and wrong their delivery is!!!! Â It's stunningly insanely bad!!! Â Placing your order over the phone is a unique experience - one guy is not only obviously stoned out of his mind, he apparently has poo and marbles in his mouth while trying to talk. Â I live within a 5 minute drive to this place, yet the last two times I ordered its took 2 hours to deliver! Â The last time we called after an hour (we were assured it'd be over in 20 mins) and they said the driver just left, called again after 25 more minutes and was told the driver will defintely be by soon, eventually someone did show up, and aparently it was the owner, his response? A shrug of the shoulders!!!! This is the guy that owns the place...
And the time before that, this is really bizzare, the delivery guy apparently had no idea what doorbells were and after hearing this strange noise outside my apartment bulding I see him pulling and pulling frantically on the outside door, shaking the entire front of the bulding! WTF? Â Uh...I said 2nd doorbell from the top....
So Jesse's, I'm a stoner too, but stop dipping the joints you smoke in phemaldehyde, its really bad for you. Â So, if your bored and not hungry, you just might want to order delivery here just for the bizarre nature of your food being delivered by the most stoned people on earth.
Got a chicken torta. It was good and tasty. Everything was fresh. Chicken was flavorful and juicy. However I have a peeve about things not coming with the exact ingredients listed on their menu. For example the menu listed this torta being made with guacamole on top which is why I was so excited to try it. However it did not. It came with avocado slices. Still good, but clearly there is a difference between guacamole and just avocado. If u meant avocado, fine just revise your menu then. Â Also they could have been a little more genourous on the sour cream and cheese. Overall it was still tasty and I'm willing to come back and try something else off the menu. aka the chilaquiles. yum.
Review Source:I live in the neighborhood and came back to Jesse's after long time away. Our dinner was very good, much improved. Â We tasted the ceviche tostada, tilapia dinner and chicken and mole, all were yummy. Â
Our suggestion for improvement would be getting better ventilation over the incense smell. Â The incense does mix well with the food.
Love this place! I've started coming here regularly and have never been disappointed in anything I've tried. I also used them recently to cater a party and everyone was raving about the chimichangas. The staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable- it also seems to be a nice place for low key parties.
Review Source:There was ONE waitress for the entire place. Plus, she was also doing all the carry out orders too.
When we walked in employees looked at us, but didn't say a word to us. So we had to say "can we sit anywhere". Once the waitress came to our table, she was on the telephone w/ an order at the exact same time. Wow!!!
Food was actually ok!!! I got a burrito & my friend got nachos & we both were pretty happy w/ our food.
Good prices!
I would maybe get a take out order another time. But I will not eat there ever again.
Found this place through Grubhub. Husband had a chorizo burrito, which was oily, but that's what you get with chorizo. It was pretty good, but my al pastor burrito was gross. Every piece of "meat" was fatty and rubbery. I ended up picking all of the meat out, and REALLY what's that point of eating a burrito if you pick all the good stuff out???
Review Source:Does anyone else think of the song "Jesse's Girl" when they drive by here or is it only me? "Jesse's Grill.....I'm talking 'bout Jesse's Grill...where can I find a taco like that??" Sorry, that is how my brain works. I've been driving by "Jesse's Grill!" (isn't it addictive?) for about 4 years now and finally had the chance to go. I went on a Saturday night and it was not crowded at all. As a matter of fact, we were the only couple in there! It is family owned and whole family was there, talking to a friend at the counter. The waitress was sweet and our food came out fast. Everything was delicious. It's a cute little place. I found the prices to be really reasonable too! It's BYOB which is fun, so you can have a group there and save some money. I liked it and plan to go back!
Review Source:I've been to Jessie's on several occassions. the first few times i played it safe wit the steak burrito covered in cheese. Excellent. Then a few of my friends and I went there because it's a BYOB style. We tried out a few appetizers and found them all pleasing. Because of that, I tried the chimchunga. It was also delicious. My friends have had the chicken enchilladas with mole sauce and swear by it. The el pastor is also very good with a nice flavorful, but not hot spiceness to it.
The wait staff is very friendly and quick to take orders and bring out the food and offer recommendations to users.
If youre looking for food at fair prices, Jesse's is a solid place. Even better when doing the BYOB.
Oh, this is some of the best Mexican food north of Pilsen! BYOB with no corkage fee and super friendly; service was fantastic. Everyone in my party LOVED their food -- several combo platters and enchiladas con mole. The mole was smoky and complex and not overly sweet, and the tamales in particular were absolutely outstanding.
I'm not usually a rice and beans kinda gal and tend to pick at them a little but usually leave most of the portions on the plate. Â Both the rice and beans here are absolutely delicious, and I just about devoured them! Guacamole seems to come standard with just about every main dish, which to me was a huge plus, since my choices at Mexican joints are often driven by the inclusion on guac as opposed to having to order it as an extra side.
This is going to be a regular spot for me from now on!!!
I was not sure about this place at first since there were only 8 reviews of Jesse's Mexican Grill on Yelp. Â However, found it interesting that Jesse use to be a great butcher before he decided to open his restaurant. Â Ordered on a Monday night around 7 pm...so thought it may not have been too busy...? Â Would like it if they had online ordering through grubhub. Â The female that took the order called back with the total. Â She said it would take 45 minutes for the delivery. Â I thought it may have arrived sooner since most people say they are really fast. Â It did take 45 plus minutes.
$1.75 for chips alone seems a little high unless they make them. Â I am not sure if they make their own tortilla chips or not but they are pretty good. Â There was a decent amount of chips in the bag so I still recommend them (even though they were just cold tortilla chips). Â The steak burrito and the ground beef burrito contain a lot of good quality meat. Â The amount and the quality of meat is important. Â Quality is number one to me when it comes to meat or I just cannot eat it. Â Rec'd one red and one green hot sauce with each big burrito. I appreciate that they do not have salsa like chunks in the hot sauce(s). Â The beans and rice on the side is pretty good but nothing special. I poured hot sauce all over mine. I do like that they are somewhat plain though (as far as chunks of extra stuff goes) so I guess I should be happy with it and not complain about putting hot sauce over it myself. Â It would be nice if he could get black beans. Â Perhaps if we all mention black beans he might get some. Â = ) Â The Cinnamon Apple Chimi's were $2.50 each-ordered 2. Â There is some type of cheese(?) in the middle and they have cinnamon on the top with an apple flavored sauce over them. I think I like this dessert. Mexican desserts are not typically very sweet. Â I would not consider these sweet at all. Â They could be better but I think they were ok for the $. Â It was nice that it could all be delivered right to the door after all. Â
One thing that bothers me is that you have to pay extra for things like chips when you don't go in person. Â However, you are paying a $3.00 delivery fee plus a tip. Â You actually probably pay more to have it delivered so I am not sure why I have to pay so much for a chip!
I don't know if this is a favorite place to order from yet but will try it again. Â ...Maybe the tacos next time. Â Give it a try! Â I think this Jesse guy deserves a chance. Total bill was appx $27.25 plus tip = $30.00 for 2 people. Could be somewhat confusing that they list different business hours in different places, different min order amounts etc...but not a big deal.
We order from Jesse's Mexican Grill fairly often. Â I'll give it my stamp of approval as solid Mexican food. Â I don't think I could rave about it as the best I've ever had but it is consistently very good. Â You can always count on Jesse's to get your order right, get it to you hot, fast and tasty. Â We order in conjunction with our neighbors frequently so our group has had just about everything on the menu at one time or another and it is always enjoyed.
Review Source:Ok, so now I've lived in Chicago for awhile and this is my go to spot for Mexican food. It's not just the food that keeps me coming back, it's the employees and the owner. Right when I walk in I always feel completely comfortable and always get exceptional service. Sometimes we bring in a 6 pack and share with the servers/cooks(not that we ever see them drink, it is a business after all so they probably save them for later).
Sure there are some places closer to the loop with interesting twists on Mexican food that are really awesome but when I want REAL Mexican food I'll drop by here and grub out, for a more than reasonable price.
One more thing. If you like chicken tortilla soup, this place has a broth with a huge depth of flavor. It's so good I can sometimes overlook the fact that I didn't get any actual chicken in my soup, and I'm totally OK with that, there's more room for the broth. I have to remember to find out if they sell it by the quart next time I'm in.
We live so close to Clark that we rarely bother with Mexican food elsewhere, but we happened upon Jesse's by accident so decided to try it out. Â When we walked in, we were the only people in the joint, except for the staff. Â We were told to sit anywhere, and the server brought out some fresh tortilla chips and salsa. Â
I had the chilaquiles with red sauce and chicken. Â The hubby had chorizo tacos (our standard fare). Â The chilaquiles were very good. Â I really like that they cooked the chicken with everything else, rather than leaving it by itself on the side, like most other places do. Â The side of guacamole was an added bonus! Â There was so much food on the plate that it hardly looked touched once I was finished.
My husband let me have a bite of his chorizo taco so I can say that the chorizo was a bit drier than I prefer, but it was still pretty good. Â Service was great, but very slow to get our bill at the end. Â
Start serving Mexican Coke and I'll give you the fifth star!
Just had jesse's for the first time and the tacos were good. I also had a sope which was excellent. It was fried well, with that nice chewy crunch. My friend had the nachos, which were huge and good with lots of guac. Â The woman that served us was really friendly, and Jesse was behind the counter. Definitely worth checking out.
Review Source:Disappointing tortas. We stopped in because it's on the way to a lot of things for us, but so are a bunch of other Mexican places. The positive reviews here make we want to give it another shot, but we probably won't do that until we've made our way through the rest of the hole-in-the-wall spots.
Review Source:As a West Rogers Parker, I've been meaning to check this place out for quite some time. Â Finally walked over Saturday for lunch, and we brought our appetites with us.
The interior is simple but comfortable with mostly tables and a couple booths supplemented by a small counter. Â
We were greeted and seated promptly and almost immediately a basket of chips with 3 different types of salsa was placed on the table. Â One salsa was green, one red and kinda tomato-ey, and the third was chunks of tomatoes, chiles, onions, and cilantro. Â All were good and had some nice flavorful heat without burning off the taste buds.
For entree I had the enchiladas suiza, which was 3 enchiladas. Â I was able to mix and match, and chose one spicy pork, one chorizo, and one chicken. Â The meats inside were tasty grilled morsels; not just stringy cheap cuts. Â Sides were the usual refried beans, Spanish rice, and a few strips of lettuce with guac and sour cream. Â It was quite good, but my only complaint is that there was just a bit too much cheese melted over the top of the dish. Â That's a matter of opinion, so obviously your taste may vary. Â Next time I'll know to ask for less. Â
My companion had a burrito the size of a small yule log accompanied by the same sides. Â
It indeed is a lot of food, but we each managed to finish and ended up so uncomfortably full that even though this was lunch, we didn't get hungry again until the next morning. Â We also probably passed enough gas between us to heat our home for the winter!
We'll go again, but eat much more sensibly next time!
We went here to try the food because I was thinking about using Jesse's for a caterer.  Place was cute, service we friendly, food was good.  I had the chicken fajitas.  They had long strips of chicken that were very soft and the seasoning was great.  My financee had beef and chicken enchilladas and both were good.  You get a LOT of food, neither of us could finish it and our total food bill was $19.  You really can't beat  it.  I'm definitely using Jesse's for my party and would go back to eat.  It's also BYOB so you can have a Corona with you yummy Mexican food!  :)
