Don't let the small kitchen fool you, Joe Sent Me has some of the best bar food in the area. My personal favorites are the Jo-Jo White pulled pork wrap and Joe Perry Project burger. They have a great selection of beers and spirits, as well as "Joe Bowls" that are served in fish bowl-like glasses for sharing. JSM a classic "come as you are" bar. You'll see people in suits to college students celebrating the end of a hard Tuesday of classes. The patio out back is a bonus, although limited in space.
Review Source:Definitely not my favorite bar in Waltham. I've never been to eat, but in terms of going out to have fun on a weekend night, it's almost always dead unless its "Brandeis Night" or "Bentley Night." Some good things about them are that they have cheap drinks & fishbowls with fun flavors, & the bartenders are overall pretty cool.
Overall, I can't attest to their food, but I guess don't come here if you're looking for a quality drink or a bumpin' time.
We were searching for an escape from our Waltham office park and went to Joe Sent Me to try something new. Far from the dive bar we feared, we got a delicious lunch.
Service was a bit slow considering the place was empty but for a couple of tables of dude bros., but I wasn't in a huge hurry to go back to work anyway.
I had the Joe Cool's Spinach & Steak Salad which is fresh baby spinach with sliced sirloin tips, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, & crumbled goat cheese. No dressing. It was really delicious. The vegetables were all fresh and crisp and the sirloin tips were quite tasty.
Everyone else liked what they got, and we're happy to add a new place to our lunch rotation.
This place does not treat its customers right. Â I'd been here a few times over the years and have generally enjoyed myself. Â The food was decent pub-food and the drinks, especially the fishbowls, were fun. Â
However, after my visit here yesterday, I will never return. Â I came with two friends, neither of whom had been here before. Â We sat on the back patio. Â When the server came over to take our orders, I asked for the "Swedish Fish" in a fishbowl. Â While this drink is listed under the martini category, I've had it made into a bowl before with no problem. Â
The server asks what I'd want if they couldn't make it; I didn't specify a second choice because I knew that they could make it, as they had before. Â Well, a few minutes later she comes out and places a large blue fishbowl drink on our table. Â The drink was obviously not a Swedish Fish bowl (which is red) and was instead whatever the bartender felt like making. Â The server never came out to let us know that our request could not be fulfilled and inquire again into alternatives.
Sorry, but if I make a special request and it can not be fulfilled, at the very least, let me know before just bringing out something random. Â Big mistake!
I went into the bar to talk to the bartender. Â When I told her that I'd had the Swedish Fish made as a bowl before, she insisted that it could not be done, getting into an involved rant about alcohol ratios. Â Really? Â The other bartenders who have made the bowl obviously figured out how to balance the proper amount of alcohol and mixers. Â However, this bartender (Female, Thursday eve.) simply would not budge.
I gave her a piece of my mind, letting her know that she was a terrible bartender and that this review would be forthcoming. Â This place doesn't treat their customers with respect; I will NEVER return.
This place is a hot spot for my college friends and I during the weeknights. Â The place is nice and cozy, the DJs are usually good, and the prices are sweet. Â There are cool food deals that can be beaten around town, but overall it's well run. Â Sometimes the bouncers can get a little testy, but then again crowds of drinking kids could shorten anyone's fuse. Â Generally, the staff is pretty cool, though the bar gets slow, again from the crowds that are there late night. Â Overall a cool, middle-of-the-road place!
Review Source:Recommended by someone at the airport, and I have to say that my expectations were low considering this is a bar. I couldn't have been more wrong. The food was excellent. I had been craving a nice sour vinaigrette and they delivered on the salad. I also had the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw. The slaw wasn't anything special, but the sandwich was great. Overall, great atmosphere and great food. Can't wait to go back.
Review Source:Joe Sent Me is a decent little townie pub. Â The walls are decorated with posters that commemorate Hollywood cool guys of the 1950's and 1960's - Humphrey Bogart, Steve McQueen, Dean Martin, etc., (which I'll bet most of the patrons do not recognize) plus one other that made me feel like I was playing a game of "Which one of these posters doesn't belong?" Â (you can figure out which one that is if you go)
The service was quick and the server was friendly. Â No complaints there. There were an adequate number of beer choices on tap to find something I liked, and the food was basic but good. Â Joe is apparently more of a beer guy than a food guy. Â I tried the North Ender burger, which comes with roasted (fried?) onions & peppers and was good enough that I would order it again. Â The fries that it came with were just ok. Â
The chicken fingers were prepared with zero creativity but are edible as long as the conversation moves along and you don't think about your food very much.
Oh come on. Joe's a pretty good guy. Â He sent you to a decent bar with kind and attentive servers, a decent music selection on the jukebox, and a reasonably priced selection of beers on tap. Â Their buffalo chicken sangwich is an actual chicken breast with buffalo sauce, not a deep-fried battered horror like most places.
I would respect Joe's decision to send me here.
Atmosphere - 5 stars. Really a cool bar to hang out in. Comfortable seats, never seems to get overly crowded, great for trivia. Downhill from there, unfortunately.
Food - 1 star. Gross. We ordered steak tips and chicken wings: the steak tips tasted like they were well past their expiration date and actually had to be sent back. The chicken wings were (allegedly) Buffalo-style and were sweet. Sweet, for Christ sake! Does the chef not know what "Buffalo" wings are?? The french fries were mediocre at best.
Beers - 2 stars. Decent selection I guess, but at $5.25 a beer for your basic draft, it's a little absurd. It's not downtown Boston, it's Waltham.
I like this place for trivia so I'll probably be back, but expensive beers and crappy food still make it a two-star place at best.
It's a mere coincidence that I wound up here just days after my first visit to the Cambridge bar of the same name (and same owners, I presume). Â It's hard for me to review this place, because the only thing I had here was water. Â You see, shortly after ordering lunch, the power went out, filling the bar with kitchen fumes as the fans had likely shut off as well, and we left empty-stomached.
From my impression though, the bar, like its Cantabrigian counterpart, features sassy waitresses, a mixture of craft and domestic beers and decent pub grub. Â This room didn't have the same charm and cozyness of the other location.
The neighborhood, on the other hand, had all the charm of a suburban pre-gentrification Central Square. Â Ever wonder where the TV news crews get all the toothless old coots to give their accounts of water main breaks and house fires? Â Swing a dead cat outside this bar and you'll hit plenty I'm sure. Â Now, it's not the bar's fault, but for a suburban area this particular stretch was very dingy - it reminded more of Lynn than of nearby Moody St.
I strictly like this place for the drinks.
Food...I could leave it. Â Each time I have had the food here I haven't been fully disappointed but not exactly pleased either. Â I had Fried Pickles here the other day. Â They were ok and better than the usual frozen crap taken out of a fridge and fried. Â
I digress.
The Joe Bowls are awesome and unexpected at a pub. Â They are bigger than most scorpion bowls and far more creative. Â The martinis are fantastic. Â I had an eggnog martini there a few days ago and it was so good I recreated it at home! Â Beer selection isn't the best but they have the standards and some seasonal. Â All around ok.
Went there for wednesday night trivia and ti was great! Â Nice bar atmosphere without too much noise.
Had a boilermaker burger like the waitress suggested and it was great. Â Came with melted cheder cheese, bar-b-que sauce(sweet and tangy), and bacon. Service was better than average. Â Thought the fries left a little to be desired. Â They were just average.
Will be going back!
I used to occasionally come here for Trivia with some friends on Wednesday nights (which I heard was discontinued a while ago, unfortunate if it's actually true). Â It's been over a year since my last visit, which is odd considering I live in a neighboring town.
Let me start by saying that the service is nearly flawless and not as mediocre as others make it seem, plus the wait isn't THAT long. Â Most of the waitresses are uber attractive, but most importantly, incredibly nice. Â I was especially satisfied by the aroma of the restaurant; quite frankly, I could spend all day writing about the pictures hung up on the walls, the music and of course...the smell!!!
Ah, but the food? Â Just downright amazing! Â The Mushroom Swiss Burger (which I always have when I go there) is mouth-watering, along with the homemade fries which I can never get enough of! Â The sweet potato fries are also phenomenal! Â Another burger I'd recommend would be the Joe Perry.
The only downside is the space-reducing crowd, which might make it impossible to find a table, but otherwise, I would honestly hope to come here again; it has left more than just a good impression on me!
This was an unpleasent lunch trip. Â I work in Lexington, MA and hopped over with some coworkers to try out a Turkey Burger on a Friday at Joe's. Â We luckily found some parking and walked into the dark pub/style place. Â We looked over the menu (everyon'e craving burgers) and the waiter took forever to come over and take our initial drink order... So we ordered drinks and food all at once. Â About 15 minutes later, 25 minutes into our experience he finally brings our drinks. Â Another 10, 15, 20 minutes go by and no food. Â The place wasn't packed it was pretty sparse, so no idea what the hold-up was. Â My coworkers get 30 minute lunches so we blew that out of the water!
Finally our food comes an hour after being seated. Â My burger is brown and doesn't look like the turkey burger it should of been, that I ordered. Â We flagged down a waitress and she came over and was like "uhmmm, I don't know it's my second day here. Â I think it's turkey? Â Let me ask?" Â I was like YES PLEASE, I don't eat beef or pork. Â
She came back and sure enough it was BEEF and we saw the waiter write down TURKEY Burger! Â The waiter came back to apologize and said that he "Just found out they don't serve turkey on Fridays!" Â I was boggled! Â Waiting over an hour to be told this, and my coworkers had their food but were super late for work. Â
Needless to say they got their food for free and I got ZERO lunch that day and went back to work starving! Â
Horrible experience, if I could give them no stars I would. Â They have alot of work to do to make this place better. Â Good luck if you try it!
This used to be the Tuesday night spot during college to get $1 drafts and hang out with all the cool kids that had fake IDs. Back then I never once thought I'd actually eat the food there, but 6 years later I was eating their food (and my words). Surprise surprise the food is actually good - especially the sweet potato fries which are thin and crispy. The service isn't always the best, especially during Weds night trivia, but for cheap drinks and better than average bar food this place gets it done.
Review Source:One of the worst bars I've ever been to , awful experience.
This place was recommended to me by a friend named Joe, so I figured it was perfect. Â As soon as I walked in, the whole bar stopped and gave me a look. Â I have no idea why, I'm a pretty nondescript caucasian wearing jeans + a button up. Â
I went to the back patio and there was a white trash couple yelling about bass pro shop. Â They were watching King of Queens and laughing like crazy too.
Eventually some other white trash people showed up and started staring at me and my friend. Â Eventually they were convinced I was BJ Novak from the office. Â I have no idea who that guy is, but I am obviously not him. Â I showed them my ID and they still didn't believe me.
I'd never go back to this bar, even if they had some free beer special. Â Full of white trash types and awful service as well. Â Just an awful bar. Â I yelled at the friend who recommended it.
Super-cheap food, especially on Tues happy hour. Appetizers are 1/2 off. I loved the chicken strips, burgers are decent too. The prices are unbelieveable. Very cheap. Good place to grab some food and drinks. Wed trivia is fun as well, though I think I like the White Horse trivia announcer better.
Review Source:Went there with a friend for an early dinner Saturday night, I have never eaten there before, only been there for drinks. I got the chicken quesadilla which was an app, but it was big enough to have as a meal; it was good, nothing exciting though. My friend got the pulled pork sandwich which he had been talking about for weeks, it smelled yummy, the fries, which I did try were very good. I would like to go back again and try a burger, I hear they are great. I don't care for the crowd at this place or actually any of the bars on Main St for some reason, but I would go back again to grab a bite!
Review Source:Went here for trivia night. Food was pretty good (one of my teammates didn't like his very much but everyone else seemed happy) but they charged us for every single soda refill (2 bucks a pop) and didn't tell us that until we got the bill, which sorta made us mad. Also the trivia moderator's music was EXTREMELY loud despite being asked to turn it down a bit so we could actually, y'know, discuss our answers, and also it was FREEZING in there because they couldn't turn the AC down. All that said, we did enjoy ourselves, we will be back for more trivia action, and we will be bringing sweatshirts and ordering water.
Review Source:SLOW Sent Me. Yes, there were eight of us, but there were only two other tables of people in the whole place and it took a really long time to get drinks and food. Â The food was pretty standard pub food, and the beer selection wasn't terribly exciting. The place is kind of dingy too. Go to the Mad Raven--you won't even need to move your car if you drove.
Review Source:I had a mini-burger which I thought was pretty good. It had the flame broiled taste!
This place definitely has the college feel to it at night. The drinks are not generous. Didn't know that there are places still using the tiny rock glasses anymore.
The service was basic. They were definitely not on top of it.
I don't know who Joe is. Or why he would be cruel enough to send anyone here.
The place seems like it has multiple personalities. One second you're listening to Gwen Stefani and next 50 cent is singin' about his tricks. Mostly it appears to be a dive bar, but in some places modern touches pop up.
The drinks are nothing to brag about--the bartenders didn't seem to know what fruit goes with what beer. Hint: Blue Moons come with an orange, not lemon.
And the service is basic. Six drinks seemed to take a bit long to prepare when there were a few girls working the bar. Or how about when the waitress told us that she was no longer serving tables and we'd have to order from the bar. Fair enough. But when one of us went up and were told our WHOLE party would have to come to the bar to show I.D.'s, well, I wasn't impressed. Sure it doesn't sound like a big deal, but how much effort would it have been for the waitress who wouldn't serve us or one of the gals behind the bar to walk over to the table of tipping patrons and check? It's the little things that count.
Jeffrey won't send you.
I've been here once, so I'm just going to jump to a decisive 2.5 stars really here and here why: Â plastic cups for pints!
OK, that's it, food was a bit below, i recall a wing special so take that as an index to their philosophy when its mixing food and spirits.
i could see the b&b's (brandies and bentleys) liking the patio smoking.plastic cup drinking, white hat wearing, pre-post game scenario.
I'm over that stage
Joe Sent Me is a fine place to play bar trivia on Wednesdays and have a beer with friends. Â The pub has an eclectic mix of locals and local college folk. Â The food is okay. Â I had the buffalo chicken wrap with seasoned fries. Â The wait staff is awfully unattenative but Stump Trivia is fun. Â Good times...

Since this is one of the Bentley hang outs I had avoided this place at all costs, but to my surprise, this place was actually really awesome after visiting them during the summer.
I met the bartender while I was at my usual hang out - Mad Raven (right next door), and she was just the sweetest thang. I came in with some of my work study students for a few rounds and some food. She was awesome. She was friendly and was able to make that side of bacon a possibility.
I had the pulled pork sandwich and a side of bacon. Oh comfort food, come to me! Yum! Moving on... the drinks... OMG they have an awesome, creative selection of Martini's. I had the White Chocolate, the Caramel Delight, but the one that topped them all... the Flirtini. This was the perfect blend of alcohol that you can easily drink this all day and wouldn't even realize you're drunk, till you try to walk...
Yummmm *licks lips just thinking about the wonderful concoction of alcoholic beverages*
Went to catch some March Madness games here when my usual haunt was too busy and it was great.  Low key but friendly bartenders offered us a "bucket of beer" cause it was cheaper for us and less work for him...perfect!  The food was basic pub style standard and the crowd was pleasant.  A great little after work spot for a beer.  I'll be back  :)
Review Source:Odd, but fun.
TVs with the game on meets
blaring Michael Jackson hits meets
dancing/groovin bartenders to said MJ tunes meets
good pub food basics meets
plenty of space meets
random!
Anyway, this is one of our after work spots because we've never cramped and the prices, food & drink are reasonable.
