Came here on Mother's Day 2012 and it is not authentic sushi.  The owners and cooks are all Korean.  Like 90% of all Japanese restaurants in the Chicagoland area they are not Japanese at all.  This place was pricey but typical for the course in Evanston.  Food was good but small portioned.  Did not do the all you can eat.

Kansaku is pretty damn cool! It's absolutely a little bit overpriced as Cassie notes, but I don't think that detracts from the place. They do have some of the most unique and tasty vegetarian sushi I've ever seen in Evanston.

What do I mean? Most are generic and boring. Carrots, celery, avocado, maybe mushroom, maybe sweet potato. That's about the only choice you have for vegetarian sushi, and I'm sorry but it's an embarrassment to any restaurant to do so. While my partner in crime aka wifey is happy with that, it's also bland.

So who actually has something more creative than that? Kansaku. The Veggie Garden sushi, described as (copied verbatim) "Sweet potato tempura, asparagus, cucumber, jalapeno and avocado wrapped in soybean paper served with spicy sauce, spicy mayo and eel sauce.", can be made without including the eel sauce.  So not only is it different, the outside of the roll is soybean paper and not just nori. Also, their Lychee martini was quite good - even if it as well was not cheap for the price.

I also noticed they do all you can eat (AYCE) on a specific day - I think Monday? So that may be worth checking out some time as well.  Overall, I do like this place.

    **** 3 1/2 stars *****

Checked out this spot twice thanks to Groupon and its convenient location.

Servers are very knowledgeable and friendly.
    Decor is intimate and inviting.
    Decent alcohol selection.

Hope you are a fan of tuna because that's what majority of their rolls contain.
Fresh fish and I'm happy to see that they don't skimp on the good stuff aka "seafood"
Fish:rice ratio is of utmost importance.
Most sushi joints will try to fluff out the customers by playing hide-and-seek with the itty bitty pieces of sashimi wedged in between the sushi rice.
    No unpleasant surprises here.

    Few appetizers could be better.
Huge huge fan of poke, but theirs was disappointing.
Small bits of poke on top of a tortilla chip?   Confusing.
